With the ever increasing environmental challenges, there is strong demand for civil and structural engineers who are practically-skilled in efficient design, green construction and sustainable development and who can play a central role in achieving sustainable adaptation to and mitigation of these challenges.

The Sustainable Civil and Structural Engineering MSc (Eng) programme provides a specialist, technical Masters-level education in civil and structural engineering.

The programme is designed to embed the knowledge, skills and understanding required to critically assess the function, use and impacts of concrete, steel and alternative construction materials in structural designs and to participate in the design, implementation and evaluation of engineering projects which are truly sustainable, bringing social, economic and environmental benefits to current future generations.

The Sustainable Civil and Structural Engineering MSc (Eng) provides an opportunity for you to develop advanced specialist knowledge in structural engineering, understand how to address the increasing challenges for the industry and develop your skills for the working environment.

The programme is pending accreditation by the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Institution of Structural Engineers, the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation and the Institute of Highway Engineers. This programme can also be studied part-time over two years. The same modules are followed and the same total credits are achieved, but these are spread over four semesters at 30 credits per semester. The independent research project (module ENGG660) is chosen in the first year, but the completion deadline is not until the end of the second year, allowing flexibility in timing and distribution of effort over the full duration of the course.

This 12-month programme consists of taught modules over two semesters and a major project starting in semester 2 and continuing through the summer. Assessment is by examinations, coursework and an individual dissertation. Places on the programme are limited to between 15 and 20.

Projects

Project work, based on a topic of industrial or scientific relevance, contributes 60 credits and is carried out in laboratories in the University or at an approved placement in industry. The project is examined by dissertation, and award of the MSc (Eng) degree will require evidence of in-depth understanding, mastery of research techniques, ability to analyse assembled data, and assessment of outcomes.

Large-scale tri-axial apparatus for stress path and cyclic load testing; flexible walled tri-axial calibration chambers; optical microscopy, digital camera and measurement software; model pile testing and durability testing facilities. We have recently established the Centre for Energy and Infrastructure Ground Research that is home to our world leading 4m diameter beam centrifuge and complementary £1m teaching facility.

The Civil Society, NGO and Non-profit Studies PDip/MA provides you with an advanced understanding of social science debates, theories and concepts relevant to organised civil society.

Strengthening the profile and capacity of civil society is now seen as a top priority by political commentators, social scientists and policy-makers all over the world. There has never been a greater need to develop a critical yet constructive understanding of the actions, behaviours and institutions that populate the space between states and markets, ranging from local voluntary associations to national social enterprises and transnational charities.

This programme draws deeply on the unique combination of scholarly and practical knowledge of the third sector, social movements and philanthropy situated in the School. You develop an in-depth understanding of the evolution of the meanings of civil society across time and space and the role its organisations and institutions play in political, social and economic life.

Teaching imparts country-specific as well as cross-national and transnational empirical and theoretical knowledge of the historical and contemporary challenges faced by these organisations.

You are also engaged in analysing how third sector organisations relate to ongoing social, political and economic transformations. In particular, your capacity to think sympathetically, but critically, about third sector contributions to policy through welfare systems and in other public policy arenas is developed.

This programme aims to:

- provide you with an advanced understanding of social science debates, theories and concepts relevant to organised civil society (OCS), where the latter includes the ‘third sector’ of NGOs, social movements and other formations between the market and the state, and refers to the institutions and practices of philanthropy, altruism and reciprocity

- impart country-specific as well as cross-national and transnational empirical and theoretical knowledge of the current challenges and processes of transformation applying to this sphere of society, and the organisations within it

- develop your understanding of, and capacity to think critically about, the key policy contributions of, and roles fulfilled by, OCS as a significant policy actor in welfare and broader public service system functioning and development

- develop your skills in research design and data collection in areas relevant to, or forming part of OCS

- familiarise you with using primary and secondary data to develop cutting-edge research in the field of OCS studies.

Research Thesis Option (Plan I)

The thesis option is a research-focused program that includes conducting original research, writing a research thesis and defending the thesis to the student’s graduate supervisory committee. The research thesis option degree requirements are as follows:

A minimum of 30 credit hours, including:

21 credit hours of approved coursework, including
- 9 credit hours of core graduate coursework

- A maximum of 6 hours of approved 400-level courses

- A minimum of 15 hours of CE-prefix courses

3 hours of CE 593 or CE 693 Practicum
- Taken with permission under the supervision of the student’s graduate advisor

6 hours of CE 599 Thesis Research
- Taken with permission under the supervision of the student’s graduate advisor

- The graduate advisor must be a full member of the department’s graduate faculty

- Once taken, CE 599 must be taken every term until graduation

Paper/Report Option (Plan II)

The paper/report, or non-thesis, option requires a research paper, a policy and practice paper, or equivalent culminating experience, which is graded by the student’s graduate advisor. The paper/report option requirements are as follows:

A minimum of 30 credit hours, including:

27 credit hours of approved coursework:
- 9 credit hours of core graduate coursework

- A maximum of 6 hours of approved 400-level courses

- A maximum of 3 hours of CE 593 or CE 693 Practicum

- A minimum of 18 hours of CE-prefix courses

3 credit hours of CE 501 Masters Capstone Project – Plan II
- Taken with permission under the direction of the student’s graduate advisor

- The graduate advisor must be a full member of the department’s graduate faculty

- Requires completion a research paper, a policy and practice paper, or equivalent report with the topic, scope, and format pre-approved by the student’s advisor

- Must be taken the semester the student plans to graduate

Master of Transportation Systems, SEU-Monash Joint degree

Transportation professionals require a range of advanced skills with a global perspective to develop more sustainable transport systems. To gain this technical and planning expertise in transportation systems, Southeast University and Monash University have established a joint Master’s program in Transportation Systems. This joint Master’s program is undertaken over two years and students graduate with two Master’s degrees; one from Southeast University and one from Monash University.

This first year of the program comprises two semesters of coursework units delivered in English. Units are taught at the Southeast University and Monash University Joint Graduate School in Suzhou, China. The Joint Graduate School in Suzhou is located in the newly developed Suzhou Dushu Lake Higher Education Town that is a part of the Science and Education Innovation District of Suzhou. This area has a number of Universities and Research Institutes as well as recreation and cultural facilities.

In Semester 1, students are required to take six units taught by Southeast University consisting of three core units and three elective units:

Core Units, Semester 1 (by SEU):

- Research Seminar
- Highway Design Theory and Methods
- Road Traffic Safety

Elective Units, Semester 1 (by SEU):

- Highway Operation and Management
- Urban Transport Network Analysis
- Theory and Method for Pavement Design
- Advanced Soil Mechanics
- Advanced Pavement Materials

In Semester 2, students are required to take another six core units delivered by Monash University:

- Intelligent Transportation Systems: Engineering & Management*
- Quantitative Methods for Transportation Systems Analysis*
- Modelling Transportation Systems*
- Urban Public Transportation Systems
- Sustainable Transportation Systems Planning
- Case Studies in Transportation Systems

For the above three units marked by “*”, the students can elect to take these course at the Monash University Clayton Campus in Melbourne, Australia.

The second year of the program consists of students undertaking a research project supervised by academics from Southeast University as well as a mentor from industrial institutes in the Suzhou area. A research thesis is required for each student.

Welfare states everywhere face enormous challenges from population ageing, changes in family life and work-patterns, migration and the economic crisis. In a globalised and interdependent world, these issues can only be understood from an international perspective which accounts for these common pressures and processes, but which also recognises and engages with the diversity of national traditions and institutions for delivering welfare.

The International Social Policy programme takes a policy analytic approach to provide you with an advanced understanding of current debates, theories and concepts relevant to international social policy. You learn about the common features of social policy arrangements internationally and the variety and differences that characterise welfare across the countries and regions of the world. Drawing on the research-based expertise available at SSPSSR which relates to countries ranging from China, South Korea and Singapore in South East Asia to the UK, Germany and Sweden in Western Europe, you are equipped to understand how national and global forces interact to shape trajectories of welfare system development.

The programme enables you to apply theories and methods of social policy in exploring enduring cross cutting themes in social policy, including the prioritisation of equality and capabilities, as well as to drill down to how and why policy unfolds in key welfare fields. You develop policy analytic skills in relation to such areas as health, migration, pensions, education, social care, and children & family related policy. You acquire expertise in the use of primary and secondary data collection in areas pertaining to all these aspects of social policy, and are thus equipped to think critically about the development of social welfare systems in a global age across the full range of national contexts and policy situations.

Course Overview

Developed by leading UK academics, this course is aimed at delivering the range of professional project management skills laid down by Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).

Major multinational and overseas projects require professionals with multi-faceted skills who can operate in a variety of cultural and socio-economic settings around the world. This one year course provides a wealth of skills development in the areas of integration and scope management, corporate social responsibility, time and cost management, and international project finance.

Accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), it is highly relevant for those wishing to pursue a career in construction project management internationally. Indeed, a recent collaboration with Hill International has confirmed the course modular structure as being a suitable learning experience for international construction project managers.

Prospects

Many industries have seen exponential growth in recent years in both international and multinational collaborations. These projects require highly skilled professionals who are capable of taking up challenging roles in a range of specialist areas
