It offers a unique opportunity to be awarded a fully recognised Civil Engineering MSc after two years of study, opening the path to a career in civil engineering as a chartered engineer.

Degree information

This bespoke programme provides grounding in fluids, soils, structures and materials engineering, and consists of second and third-year undergraduate core civil engineering subjects. Students are also allocated a civil engineering project which they are required to complete in pairs.

Students undertake modules to the value of 120 credits. The programme consists of seven core modules and a research project. There are no optional modules for this programme.

Dissertation/report

The civil engineering project involves individual research and can include laboratory, computational or fieldwork depending on the nature of your project and your supervisor. It is usually completed in pairs. The programme also includes a field trip and a one-week Constructionarium visit.

Other information for overseas students
Overseas students requiring a visa to study should note that the Graduate Diploma (pre-qualifying year) and the Civil Engineering MSc are treated as TWO separate programmes. You will only be able to obtain a one-year visa for the Graduate Diploma and then you will need to apply for a second visa for the MSc. You will almost certainly have to leave the UK between finishing the Graduate Diploma in June and commencing the MSc in September.

Civil Engineers deal with structures (e.g. buildings, bridges, tunnels, dams) and infrastructures (such as roads, railways, airports, water supply systems, etc.). The two-year Master of Science in Civil Engineering provides students with a sound preparation on these topics, allowing them to choose a curriculum (or ‘track’) among the five available: General, Geotechnics, Hydraulics, Transport Infrastructures and Structures. The ‘General’ curriculum aims at training civil engineers with a broader range of expertise in the design, implementation and management of civil works of various kinds. ‘Geothecnics’ is devoted to the study of engineering problems involving geomaterials (i.e., soil and rock) and their interaction with civil structures (foundations, tunnels, retaining walls).

During your final two years you will build on all the knowledge you have acquired enabling you to analyse, design and manage civil engineering systems in an integrated manner. You will develop practical proposals for complex civil engineering problems in a simulated professional organisation. You will also complete a dissertation on a topic of your choice and a design project, which covers the practical application of knowledge and techniques in the identification, design and management of a simulated major construction project.

◾To complete the MSc degree you must undertake an individual project worth 60 credits.
◾Projects can involve laboratory work, computational modelling, fieldwork, theoretical development, design or a study of industry application.
◾The project is an important part of your MSc where you can apply your newly learned skills and show to future employers that you have been working on cutting edge projects relevant to industry.
◾Your project is completed under the supervision of an academic staff member. You can choose a topic from a list of MSc projects in Civil Engineering. Alternatively, should you have your own idea for a project, staff members are always open to discussion of topics.

MSOE’s Master of Science in Civil Engineering (MSCVE) program is designed to equip students with the advanced knowledge 
and skills necessary for professional practice. The MSCVE program was designed to address the new civil engineering Body of Knowledge requirements for graduate programs developed by the American Society of Civil Engineers. Students will be able to specialize in one of the following three areas: (1) construction management, (2) environmental and water resources engineering, and (3) structural engineering.

Completion of the MSCVE program satisfies the proposed educational requirement promulgated by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying calling for a minimum of a master’s degree or equivalent as a prerequisite for professional engineering licensure.

MSOE’s MSCVE program is tailored to the student who already has an undergraduate degree from an ABET-accredited civil engineering program. Students who do not have an ABET-accredited undergraduate degree in civil engineering may have to take additional prerequisite courses as specified by the Program Director. These additional prerequisite courses will be chosen by the MSCVE Program Director based on the student’s academic background to help ensure that the student is equipped to be successful in civil engineering graduate studies at MSOE.

Curriculum Format

The MSCVE program requires completion of 45 graduate credits. At least 36 of these credits shall be taken from courses within the student’s chosen specialty; up to 9 credits may be taken from courses within other civil engineering specialty areas or from courses offered by other departments.

During the last year of the student’s graduate studies, the student must complete either (a) a nine-credit, three-quarter Capstone Project consisting of CV-800, CV-890, and CV-892, or (b) a three-credit, one-quarter Capstone Report consisting of CV-800 only. The former is appropriate for students wishing to conduct graduate-level research for personal enrichment or as preparation for subsequent graduate studies; the latter is appropriate for students who wish to take additional coursework in preparation for professional civil engineering practice.

You’ll study

You'll take the compulsory module Civil Engineering Design Projects. This module gives you the opportunity to work on real projects. You can choose between a renewable energy project or an industrial project. You’ll develop comprehensive and innovative designs that involve structural engineering, geotechnical engineering and water engineering, management, environmental and financial planning.

You'll also take the compulsory module Research Protocols for Science & Engineering which supports the dissertation project. You also have a wide choice of optional modules.

Following successful completion of the taught component, you’ll undertake a dissertation. If you’re on one of the specialist streams you’ll undertake a research project on a topic related to that stream. The dissertation can be linked to the industrial placement and worked on together with the industrial partner.

Accreditation

This degree is accredited as meeting the requirements for Further Learning for a Chartered Engineer (CEng) for candidates who have already acquired a partial CEng accredited undergraduate first degree.

Open Access

Home students can also choose to study through Open Access. This is initially a non-graduating route. You register for one module at a time and have the option to build up credits eventually leading to a Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma or MSc. You can take up to five years to achieve the qualification.

This option is popular with students in employment, who may wish to undertake modules for Continuing Professional Development purposes.

Home students who do not meet the normal MSc entry requirements for this programme are welcome to apply through the Open Access route instead.

Additional requirements

For candidates whose first language is not English, minimum standards of English proficiency are an IELTS score of 6.5. Applicants with slightly lower scores have the opportunity to attend the University's Pre-Sessional English classes to bring them up to the required level. Some exceptions to the above may apply to nationals of UKBA-approved Majority English Speaking countries.

Course details

In the first year, you’ll be introduced to the role of the professional civil engineer – grounded in an understanding of the application of mathematics in engineering and the behaviour of civil engineering structures. Working in both lab and field, you’ll develop skills in surveying, computer aided design and the properties of engineering materials. We’ll begin your professional development through site visits, group-based design activity and visiting industry speakers.

In year 2, explore the core disciplines of civil engineering, from structural analysis and design to hydraulic engineering through lectures, practical activities, site visits and a field course. We’ll introduce you to some specialist areas of the industry, including coastal engineering and water management – with the opportunity to take an option module to develop skills in sampling, survey, underwater photography and inspection techniques (for those who have completed the HSE SCUBA diving qualification).

By taking the opportunity to spend a year in paid professional employment as a student civil engineer, you’ll gain real world experience, industry contacts and the possibility of summer work, sponsorship or a graduate job offer. Our Employability Service will support you in finding a placement and we offer an extensive network of employers across all sectors.

In year 3, you’ll deepen your understanding of the core technical subjects in civil engineering with a particular emphasis on coastal engineering design - culminating in an industry-focused group design project. You’ll spend much of the year completing a research-based individual project – that focuses on laboratory experiments, computer-aided modelling, or field work linked to our staff’s research and professional interests.

In your final year, you'll extend your existing skills in geotechnical engineering, hydraulics and computation and information technology. Broaden your knowledge by studying subjects such as modelling marine processes, structural engineering and project management. In preparation for your future career, you’ll focus on the commercial aspects of the civil engineering business through a group-based design project collaborating with other engineering disciplines.

Civil and structural engineering encompasses a range of disciplines, including road, rail and drainage systems, dams, harbours, bridges, buildings and other structures. Civil and structural designers and drafters plan, design, develop and manage construction and repair projects.

This qualification develops your skills and knowledge in the design and drafting of engineering plans to recognised standards. You will learn about different areas of civil engineering, including construction, project management, design and testing. You will also learn about the design and drafting of concrete, steelwork, roads and pipes, as well as hydrology, stormwater drainage and foundations.

While it is essential that those who work in the supervisory or management levels of this discipline have a firm understanding of drafting and planning principles, this qualification goes much further. To be effective on the job, you will need to know how to apply knowledge of fundamental civil and structural engineering concepts, including geotechnical engineering, hydraulic engineering, engineering maths, and properties of materials. Throughout the program this subject matter will be placed into the context of engineering management. Our aim is to ensure that you are an effective, knowledgeable and skilled supervisor or manager, someone who can work beyond a “plan and design” brief to ensure that a project is delivered effectively.
This qualification aims to provide theoretical and practical education and training such that graduates may gain employment at the engineering associate (“paraprofessional”) level within the building and construction industry.

There are eight threads in the course to give you maximum, practical coverage. These threads comprise environmental issues, engineering technologies, drawing, 2D and 3D CAD design, building materials, civil and structural sub-disciplines (roads, steel, concrete, pavement, drainage, soil, water supply, sewerage), construction sites and engineering management.

This program avoids too much emphasis on theory. Industrial placement

A wide range of companies, such as AECOM, ATKINS, CAPITA, CH2M HILL and ClimateXChange (Scotland’s Centre of Expertise on Climate Change), are offering placements exclusively for this MSc. A full list of companies can be provided upon request. The 8 to 12 weeks industrial placement will take place in the period from June to September.

You’ll study

You'll take the compulsory module Civil Engineering Design Projects. This module gives you the opportunity to work on real projects. You can choose between a renewable energy project or an industrial project. You’ll develop comprehensive and innovative designs that involve structural engineering, geotechnical engineering and water engineering, management, environmental and financial planning.

In additional to the industrial placement you'll also take the compulsory module Research Protocols for Science & Engineering which supports the dissertation project. You also have a wide choice of optional modules.

Following successful completion of the taught component, you’ll undertake a dissertation. If you’re on one of the specialist streams you’ll undertake a research project on a topic related to that stream. The dissertation can be linked to the industrial placement and worked on together with the industrial partner.

Accreditation

This degree is accredited as meeting the requirements for Further Learning for a Chartered Engineer (CEng) for candidates who have already acquired a partial CEng accredited undergraduate first degree.

Additional requirements

For candidates whose first language is not English, minimum standards of English proficiency are an IELTS score of 6.5. Applicants with slightly lower scores have the opportunity to attend the University's Pre-Sessional English classes to bring them up to the required level. Some exceptions to the above may apply to nationals of UKBA-approved Majority English Speaking countries.

Learning & teaching

Some classes involve fieldtrips and/or lab work. For fieldtrips, you need to wear warm clothing, waterproof jacket/trousers and sturdy shoes/boots (e.g. hiking boots or non-slip wellington boots).
