The MSc in Communication and Information Sciences offers a unique program in which you learn about how people acquire and transfer information and how new means of communication can be used creatively and innovatively. The approach taken at Tilburg University is unique in the sense that the broad concept of communication is examined from many perspectives, including those of linguistics, cognitive and social psychology, computational modeling and document design.

This program is intended for highly talented and motivated students with a keen sense of intellectual curiosity and intellectual ambition. In this Master’s program, you will encounter state-of-the-art research in the broad interdisciplinary field of communication. The point of departure is natural communication: how is information transferred from one person to another? For what purpose? You will participate in a wide range of courses such as communication strategies, non-verbal communication and computer vision. This unique combination of approaches and research traditions will enable you to work as a communication expert, and answer questions such as:
•What is the best way to present information to an audience?
•How do people communicate within an organization?
•How can you influence people's behavior through language?

Why this programme

-Overall the programme is designed to enable students to acquire sufficient linguistic knowledge and translating skills to be able to read and retrieve information from a variety of texts in the original language, including those related to social sciences, and to deepen their existing knowledge of Russian realia.
-It uses online and distance resources as well as classroom teaching and includes a period of study at a language school in Russia.

The Diploma provides a substantial programme in Russian Language for graduates who already possess basic proficiency in Russian but require a more extensive grounding in the language specifically for the purposes of conducting social scientific research dealing with Russia and / or the CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States).

The master of science program in imaging science prepares students for positions in research in the imaging industry or in the application of various imaging modalities to problems in engineering and science. Formal course work includes consideration of the physical properties of radiation-sensitive materials and processes, the applications of physical and geometrical optics to electro-optical systems, the mathematical evaluation of image forming systems, digital image processing, and the statistical characterization of noise and system performance. Technical electives may be selected from courses offered in imaging science, color science, engineering, computer science, science, and mathematics. Both thesis and project options are available. In general, full-time students are required to pursue the thesis option, with the project option targeted to part-time and online students who can demonstrate that they have sufficient practical experience through their professional activities.

Faculty within the Center for Imaging Science supervise thesis research in areas of the physical properties of radiation-sensitive materials and processes, digital image processing, remote sensing, nanoimaging, electro-optical instrumentation, vision, medical imaging, color imaging systems, and astronomical imaging. Interdisciplinary efforts are possible with other colleges across the university.

The program can be completed on a full- or a part-time basis. Some courses are available online, specifically in the areas of color science, remote sensing, medical imaging, and digital image processing.

Plan of study

All students must earn 30 credit hours as a graduate student. The curriculum is a combination of required core courses in imaging science, elective courses appropriate for the candidate’s background and interests, and either a research thesis or graduate paper/project. Students must enroll in either the research thesis or graduate paper/project option at the beginning of their studies.

Core courses

Students are required to complete the following core courses: Fourier Methods for Imaging (IMGS-616), Image Processing and Computer Vision (IMGS-682), Optics for Imaging (IMGS-633), and either Radiometry (IMGS-619) or The Human Visual System (IMGS-620).

Speciality track courses

Students choose two courses from a variety of tracks such as: digital image processing, medical imaging, electro-optical imaging systems, remote sensing, color imaging, optics, hard copy materials and processes, and nanoimaging. Tracks may be created for students interested in pursuing additional fields of study.

Research thesis option

The research thesis is based on experimental evidence obtained by the student in an appropriate field, as arranged between the student and their adviser. The minimum number of thesis credits required is four and may be fulfilled by experiments in the university’s laboratories. In some cases, the requirement may be fulfilled by work done in other laboratories or the student's place of employment, under the following conditions:

1. The results must be fully publishable.

2. The student’s adviser must be approved by the graduate program coordinator.

3. The thesis must be based on independent, original work, as it would be if the work were done in the university’s laboratories.

A student’s thesis committee is composed of a minimum of three people: the student’s adviser and two additional members who hold at least a master's dgeree in a field relevant to the student’s research. Two committee members must be from the graduate faculty of the center.

Graduate paper/project option

Students with demonstrated practical or research experience, approved by the graduate program coordinator, may choose the graduate project option (3 credit hours). This option takes the form of a systems project course. The graduate paper is normally performed during the final semester of study. Both part- and full-time students may choose this option, with the approval of the graduate program coordinator.

Admission requirements

To be considered for admission to the MS in imaging science, candidates must fulfill the following requirements:

- Hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution (undergraduate studies should include the following: mathematics, through calculus and including differential equations; and a full year of calculus-based physics, including modern physics. It is assumed that students can write a common computer program),

- Submit a one- to two-page statement of educational objectives,

- Submit official transcripts (in English) of all previously completed undergraduate or graduate course work,

- Submit letters of recommendation from individuals familiar with the applicant’s academic or research capabilities,

- Submit scores from the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) (requirement may be waived for those not seeking funding from the Center for Imaging Science), and

- Complete a graduate application.

- International applicants whose native language is not English must submit scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language. Minimum scores of 600 (paper-based) or 100 (Internet-based) are required. Students may also submit scores from the International English Language Testing System. The minimum IELTS score is 7.0. International students who are interested in applying for a teaching or research assistantship are advised to obtain as high a TOEFL or IELTS score as possible. These applicants also are encouraged to take the Test of Spoken English in order to be considered for financial assistance.

Applicants seeking financial assistance from the center must have all application documents submitted to the Office of Graduate Enrollment Services by January 15 for the next academic year.

Additional information

- Bridge courses

Applicants who lack adequate preparation may be required to complete bridge courses in mathematics or physics before matriculating with graduate status.

What you’ll study

The course will have a duration of 1 year, with two semesters of classes (120 credits in total) followed by an MSc dissertation project (60 credits) during the summer.

Semester 1

Semester 2

Semester 2 will additionally consist of a 10-credit core module as well as 40 credits worth of elective modules. To ensure breadth of knowledge, you'll be required to choose electives from at least two departments. This semester is designed to extend your core skills and provide you with opportunities through a broad range of electives to specialise in areas that you are particularly interested to excel.

The only technical core class will provide you with a thorough theoretical and practical understanding of optimisation techniques essential for data analytics, whereas each of the three departments will offer four to five elective courses, the majority of which are accessible to everyone on the course without any prerequisites. The final component of the MSc course will be a summer dissertation project, which can be completed either through a client-based project or a desk-based research project, depending on your interests. You will submit your dissertation in September to complete your degree requirements (pending any resits).

Work placement

You will have optional opportunities to complete your MSc summer dissertation projects in client-based projects, where a number of host organisations will be arranged by the department. These projects will be normally unpaid, however, all costs such as travel and accommodation will be covered by the host organisation if out of town.

Major projects

The taught modules on the programme introduce you to a variety of tools, techniques, methods and models. However, the practical reality of applying analytical methods in business is often far removed from the classroom. Working with decision-makers on real issues presents a variety of challenges.

For example, data may well be ambiguous and hard to come by, it may be far from obvious which data analytics methods can be applied and managers will need to be convinced of the business merits of any suggested solutions. While traditional teaching can alert students to such issues, understanding needs to be reinforced by experience.

This is primarily addressed by the core module ‘Data Analytics in Practice’, which takes place over both semesters. Every year, case studies and challenging projects are presented to our students by various organisations.

Facilities

Strathclyde Business School (SBS) is one of the 76 triple-accredited business schools in the world, and is one of the largest of its kind in Europe. SBS was also recently selected as the "Business School of the Year" in Times Higher Education (THE) Awards."

The three departments involved in this course work together to provide a dynamic, fully-rounded and varied programme of specialist and cross-disciplinary postgraduate course.

Optional classes
Students are required to choose 40 credits worth of elective classes, and at least from two departments. All optional classes take place in Semester 2.

Learning & teaching

The course is delivered in various ways. While most classes have regular lectures, tutorials and hands-on software sessions, experiential learning is a crucial part of the course. This is delivered through projects and case studies with various external organisations, and MSc projects.

There are also guest lectures and recruitment events throughout the year, as well as a number of career support sessions that provide you with invaluable career information and generic job hunting skills such as CV writing and how to handle interviews.

Assessment

Every module has its own methods of assessment appropriate to the nature of the material. These include written assignments, exams, practical team projects, presentations and individual projects. Many modules involve more than one method of assessment to realise your potential.

Careers

The aim of the MSc in data analytics is to develop graduates who can use data analytics technology, understand the statistical principles behind the technologies and understand how to apply these technologies to solve business problems.

Graduates will be able to bridge the various knowledge domains that are relevant for tackling data analytics problems as well as being able to identify emerging themes and directions within data analytics. Graduates will display abilities across the three component disciplines.

This is now a reality: parts of buildings can now interact with each other, smart vehicles can be autonomously controlled and humans can interact with all these using smart phones and wearables.
This innovative Internet of Things (IoT) MSc programme will help you adapt to become one of the highly skilled and in-demand engineers who are able to fully exploit the potential that these technologies offer.

The Internet of Things (IoT) focuses on a vision of more connected, different, things (or digital devices) than in previous visions of the Internet. More ‘things’ are part of the physical world that connect to form smart environments. Humans are constantly increasing the frequency and range of ‘things’ (sensors, tags, cards, phones, actuator, wearables) they interact with in the world. Machine-to-machine interaction will allow more physical things to interact with other things without human intervention for scalability.

The MSc in IoT is designed to meet the demand for a new kind of IT specialist and skills, those who can:

-engineer new interactive products – things;
-acquire, fuse and process the data they collect from things;
-interact with, and interconnect these things as part of larger, more diverse, systems.
-The School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science draws on its strengths of highly rated R&D centres of excellence in core subject areas comprising Networks, Cognitive Science, Antennas together with interdisciplinary centres such as the Centre for Intelligent Sensing (CIS) and the Centre for Digital Music (C4DM).

The MSc IoT is organised along 3 pathways: Data pathway, Engineering pathway, and the Intelligent Sensing pathway to enable students to focus on these different aspects of the course.

Industrial Experience

The industrial placement currently takes place towards the end of the first year for a maximum of 12 months. It is the student’s responsibility to secure their placement, the school will offer guidance and support in finding and securing the placement but the onus is on the student to secure the job and arrange the details of the placement.

Currently if you are not able to secure a placement by the end of your second semester we will transfer you onto the 1 year FT taught programme without the Industrial Experience, this change would also be applied to any visa if you were here on a student visa.

The industrial placement consists of 8-12 months spent working with an appropriate employer in a role that relates directly to your field of study. The placement is currently undertaken between the taught component and the project. This will provide you with the opportunity to apply the key technical knowledge and skills that you have learnt in your taught modules, and will enable you to gain a better understanding of your own abilities, aptitudes, attitudes and employment potential. The module is only open to students enrolled on a programme of study with integrated placement.

If you do not secure a placement you will be transferred onto the 1 year FT programme.
