If you are pursuing intensive research-related and practice-related training for a career in Chinese language learning or teaching, this programme offers a firm grounding in theory and practice of language learning and teaching; as well as in research methods.

You will study general areas of linguistic inquiry (phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics and discourse structure, if you have not previously studied linguistics). You will also study how linguistic inquiry informs second language acquisition and language teaching. You will also learn about teaching Chinese in higher education.

By the end of the degree, you will be fully adept at evaluating published materials (e.g. textbooks) and research papers related to Chinese language teaching, conducting pedagogical research, in addition to designing teaching materials and lesson plans.

Structure

Students take core modules up to the value of three full units plus a 10,000-word dissertation. This includes two core compulsory modules, Language Pedagogy and Chinese Language Learning and Teaching. For those who have not previously studied linguistics an introductory module, Introduction to the Study of Language (ISL), is required. The remaining units can be taken from the list of optional modules.

The department is a centre for linguistic study in an unparalleled range of languages, many of which we are documenting for the first time. They include languages of Africa, the Near and Middle East, South Asia, South East Asia, Central Asia, Australia, the Pacific, and Siberia. Acupuncture is now well known as a system of medicine that involves the insertion of needles to specific points on the body. However, traditional practice also utilises other techniques such as moxibustion and cupping. The Chinese word for acupuncture is zhenjiu; literally needle and moxibustion. It originated In China around three thousand years ago and soon spread to other countries in Asia such as Japan and Korea. Acupuncture is now widely used around the world.

This course provides a strong foundation in the theory and application of acupuncture, as well as extensive clinical experience and a grounding in Chinese language and culture. Over the four year course, you'll also gain a thorough understanding of western bio-medical sciences and the skills to be a reflective and professional practitioner. Research will play an important role in the future development of the profession of acupuncture and this programme is designed to equip you with excellent research skills.

Modules covering Chinese medicine, language and culture will be taught by experienced lecturers from China. You'll benefit from this wealth of clinical experience and extensive knowledge of the various traditions and historical developments in Chinese medicine. You'll also learn from practitioners based in the UK to gain a more complete picture and understanding of the skills required to be a professional acupuncturist in the West.

Clinical experience is central to understanding and good practice of acupuncture. You'll train throughout the course at our teaching clinic. You'll also undertake an extended clinical placement in a Chinese hospital and study at our partner institution the Heilongjiang University of Chinese Medicine.

All this combined will help you to develop the skills to be a reflective and professional acupuncturist.

Professional links

This course is accredited by the British Acupuncture Accreditation Board (BAAB). BAAB accredits courses on behalf of the British Acupuncture Council (BAcC).

This course is run in partnership with London South Bank University, the Confucius Institute at LSBU, Heilongjiang University of Chinese Medicine and Harbin Normal University. All students on the course are eligible to apply for scholarships through the Confucius Institute to undertake studies in Chinese medicine and language in China.

Career progression

This course will enable you to work as a professional acupuncturist, and many recent graduates from this course have gone onto be professional clinical practitioners in acupuncture.

As a graduate from this course, you will be able to apply for further study at postgraduate level.

Programme description

You will receive advanced legal training in your chosen subjects, similar to that of a standard LLM programme in the Law School, and of a level that is required for further study in the Law. You will also achieve competence (in reading, writing and oral work) in Modern Standard Chinese (Mandarin) and a solid foundation in understanding contemporary Chinese society, culture and politics.

The programme offers a unique and exciting opportunity for you to develop further your Chinese language skills through an Approved Residence Abroad where you will live and work in China as part of the programme.

Once on the programme it will be possible for students to study more specialised areas of law and, where appropriate, graduate with a named LLM degree in one of the following areas:

  • Commercial Law & Chinese
  • Intellectual Property Law & Chinese
  • International Law & Chinese

Programme structure

This is a two year programme. There is no part-time option for this degree.

Year One

  • 60 credits of law courses
  • 80 credits of language training in Modern Standard Chinese
  • 20 credits in Chinese culture and politics subjects.

Year Two

You will spend semester one improving your Chinese language skills at an institution in China. This part of the programme is coordinated by the Scottish Centre for Chinese Studies and you can contact them directly for further information.

In semester two you will return to Edinburgh to complete 40 credits in law courses and 40 credits in Chinese language studies. Subject to satisfactory completion of the taught part of the programme, you will undertake a 10,000-word dissertation. You will be allocated a specialist supervisor from whom you can expect guidance and support, but the purpose of the dissertation is to allow you to independently design and conduct a piece of research and analysis.

Please note that due to unforeseen circumstances or lack of demand for particular courses, we may not be able to run all courses as advertised come the start of the academic year.

We are currently in the process of confirming courses for the 2018/19 academic year.

Learning outcomes

The programme provides students with an in-depth understanding of broad areas of law and legal scholarship.

It will provide you with intermediate/advanced level competence in Modern Standard Chinese (Mandarin) and with a good understanding of contemporary issues in Chinese society, culture, politics and business.

The programme fosters independent thinking and provides students with the tools to conduct masters-level research in Law.

You will have the opportunity to immerse yourself in Chinese language and culture through Approved Residence Abroad. This is a highly flexible course that offers a large range of modules in the social sciences that may be combined with Chinese language tuition at a range of levels. The course will cover topics including the Chinese economy, business culture, media, and the politics of the country. At the end of the course you will have a deep understanding of life in modern China.

You can study a shorter course for a Postgraduate Certificate (four months, 60 credits) or Postgraduate Diploma (nine months, 120 credits). You’ll need 180 credits to get a Masters degree, including 60 credits from your extended project.

This one-year Master's programme focuses on foreign language teaching. It offers theoretical insights to help assess language-teaching methods and applied linguistics research. You will study the process of learning and the use of second languages. The programme allows you to focus your research on your language of choice, for instance Dutch as a second language, but also French, German, Swedish, Chinese, or any other language.
You will approach second language acquisition from many different angles, including psychology, social interaction and language teaching. You will be introduced to the field of linguistics, language acquisition and language teaching theory.
The program focuses especially on Dynamic System Theory, which explains how cultural differences become bodily differences. You will learn about the social, cultural and political processes that play a role in using a language or that may cause the use of a second language to decline. You will explore didactic applications of recent research and theoretical developments, and learn about computer assisted language learning.

The MA Applied Linguistics at the University of Groningen is a unique programme focussing on the processes involved in second language learning, as well as teaching theories. This 12-month programme combines high quality postgraduate social science research training with a comprehensive study of contemporary China.

The key features of this programme are:

1. interdisciplinary teaching;
2. social scientific study of China;
3. contemporary Chinese society, defined broadly as post-1949;
4. research methodology training that is relevant to the study of China (part of the core course);
5. a language option which provides maximum flexibility to students who would like to improve Chinese language skills;

The MSc in Contemporary China Studies attracts students with diverse backgrounds and study/work experiences. Students may come from undergraduate degrees in various social science subjects such as Economics, Sociology, Social Policy, Geography, Politics, International Relations, Management and Anthropology. Previous undergraduate coursework on China is not a compulsory requirement for admission. Applications will be considered from those who have worked in NGOs, civil service, or similar fields. Structure

Students on the programme take the core course Understanding Contemporary China - 15PCIC002 and two taught option courses (2 Units) from the list given below. Those who wish to improve their Chinese language skills may take language courses (1 Unit maximum) from the Faculty of Cultures and Languages and one other option course (1 Unit). In addition, students write a 10,000 word dissertation. This course includes the option of undertaking a 4-week internship sometime during June/July.

Teaching & Learning

- Lectures and Seminars

Most courses require students to attend two or three hours of classes each week. This time will be spent in lectures, seminars, tutorial discussions and student presentations: the exact mixture of activities varies somewhat from course to course. At Masters level there is a particular emphasis on students’ contributions and presentations, and students are also expected to read extensively and prepare for each class in advance.

Language courses typically involve more hours of contact time, especially at elementary level, and regular homework.

The assessment on most courses consists of two or three coursework essay assignments and an unseen written examination, sat in April or May. However, some courses are assessed purely on the basis of coursework, including essays and reaction papers.

- Dissertation

A 10,000-word dissertation will be written on a topic agreed with the Programme Convenor of the MSc Contemporary China Studies and the candidate's supervisor.

Learning Resources

SOAS Library is one of the world's most important academic libraries for the study of Africa, Asia and the Middle East, attracting scholars from all over the world. The Library houses over 1.2 million volumes, together with significant archival holdings, special collections and a growing network of electronic resources. The China and Inner Asia collection consists of approximately 200,000 volumes and 5,000 periodicals.

The Department

Six of the academic departments are devoted to teaching and research in the languages, literatures and cultures of Africa, China and Inner Asia, Japan and Korea, the Near and Middle East, South Asia, and South East Asia, with the seventh teaching and conducting research in Linguistics. The Language Centre caters to the needs of non-degree students and governmental and non-governmental organisations. It maintains a huge portfolio of courses, including year-long diploma programmes, weekly evening classes in about 40 different African and Asian languages, and tailored intensive one-to-one courses. Overview

The MA in Chinese Studies aims to provide students who already have a background in Chinese language and culture at undergraduate level with an opportunity to specialise in the area of cultural and literary analysis with particular emphasis on the conflict and communication within the Sinosphere (mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau) and between China and the West. The programme introduces students to academic research, new ideas and theoretical approaches. It aims to equip students with academic, analytical, creative, reflective and presentation skills in order to foster interest and involvement in the field of Chinese languages, literatures and cultures. It also aims to enhance students’ knowledge and understanding of important concepts of Chinese languages, literatures, cultures and societies, in particular with regard to mainland China.

It is possible to study modules of particular interest without completing a Masters degree or to exit with a Postgraduate Diploma (Level 9) in Chinese Studies after completing 60 credits of taught modules.

Course Structure

The programme involves two elements: a set of modules (60 ECTS) on which students will be examined in January (30 ECTS) and in May/June (30 ECTS), and a dissertation (Minor Thesis) which students complete after their second semester (30 ECTS).

1. In each semester, students are obliged to take one language module (5 ECTS) and two content modules offered by Chinese Studies.

2. Students have to take three content modules offered by the SMLLC: Research Skills/Research Methodology ML610 (5 ECTS), Introduction to Intercultural Studies GN612A (5 ECTS) and Approaches to Translation Studies ID611 (5ECTS).

3. The Viva Voce Examination (conducted – at least partly – in Mandarin Chinese) will take place in early June. Normally, the external examiner, the Head of Chinese Studies and the thesis supervisor will all be present and act as examiners so as to ensure international standards.

4. The minor theses will be supervised by SMLLC full-time members of staff after consultation with the student.

MA Chinese/English Translation & Interpreting

The MA in Chinese/English Translation and Interpreting is jointly taught by specialist staff in the School of Modern Languages and Cultures, the Institute of Contemporary Chinese Studies, and the Centre for English Language Education. It is designed for native speakers of Chinese who have a high level of competence in English and wish to develop this further. The MA is also open to native speakers of English who have a high level of competence in Chinese. The course combines practical, technological and theoretical training in translation between English and Chinese along with training and practice in bi-lateral interpreting between the two languages. For native speakers of Chinese, modules in advanced English skills offer preparation for the Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE, equivalent to Council of Europe level C2), or alternatively the Cambridge Advanced Certificate of English (CAE, equivalent to level C1).

This is a postgraduate qualification for prospective professional translators between English and Chinese and interpreters mediating between the languages. It is also suitable for Chinese teachers of English wishing to enhance their qualifications. In addition it provides a basis for those who might wish to go on to further academic study.

Additional Entry requirements

Candidates who are native speakers of English should hold an honours degree in Chinese Language and/or Chinese Studies, with a Chinese language component in every year of the degree, at 2:1 level or above or an international equivalent. Native speakers of English should also have at least a year of overseas work experience in a Chinese-speaking country. Passing advanced HSK is also essential.

Candidates whose first language is not English must achieve an overall score on the British Council IELTS test of at least 7 with no less than 6.5 in each element; or a TOEFL score of 600 with at least 5 in the Test of Written English (TWE); or TOEFL iBT score of 100, with no less than 21 in any element. Test results should be no more than two years old.

Course structure

The MA is structured around core modules in translation theory and practice, use of technological translating tools, training and practice in bi-lateral interpreting, and advanced English or Chinese skills, as appropriate to the native language of the student.

Optional modules allow the acquisition or extension of skills in a language other than English or Chinese, or development of existing expertise for technical translation purposes. These modules are taught across two semesters, running from the end of September to the following June. The remaining time is allocated to the preparation and submission of a targeted translation project with commentary, for submission in September. If appropriate arrangements can be made, the project may be a practical exercise undertaken during a placement with a local public body or charity.

The first semester modules can be taken separately as a Postgraduate Certificate in Chinese/English Translation and Interpreting. The first and second semester modules can be taken as a Diploma in Chinese/English Translation and Interpreting.

While providing generic training in the theory and practice of translating and interpreting, the course is dedicated to translation and interpreting between the specific languages and cultures of English and Chinese. It is therefore able to target specific theoretical, technical and practical issues relating to this particular cultural interface.
