The aim of this programme is to strengthen and develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes of the participants, thus enabling them to fulfil their highest potential in both their personal and professional lives. The design of the course is such that it enhances the collaboration between disciplines working with children, adolescents and families with mental health problems. The programme is firmly grounded in a body of knowledge that aims to promote excellence in the participant's area of practice. It is designed to provide an academically robust education for the participants and the various modules offered develop and complement subjects undertaken at degree or 'equivalent' level.

This M.Sc. in Mental Health (Child, Adolescent and Family strand) offers the student two specialist modules in year one, a number of core modules shared with other MSc students, as well as clinical placements. The specialist modules are 'Child and Adolescent and Family Mental Health Interventions' and 'Theoretical and Evidenced Based Practices in Child, Adolescent and Family Mental Health.

Students on this programme are recognised as practising professionals with a resource of practice and educational skills and knowledge that will enhance their learning at this advanced stage of their personal and professional pathway. Each student is considered unique in life experiences, motivation for learning, learning style and scholastic ability. Throughout the programme a variety of student-focused teaching strategies is used, including co-operative learning, self-directed learning and experiential learning methods. Interdisciplinary sharing of knowledge and perspectives is encouraged and rewarded. Students' past experiences are valued and integrated as a rich source of reflection and learning. Feedback and support are tailored to meet the individual needs of the student. Students also have an opportunity to engage in shaping aspects of the educational programme.

Hence, the curriculum is focused on a transactional model of education, which strives to be collegial in nature and promotes independent, self-directed learning and self-evaluation.

All students register on the MSc course in the first instance. Students may choose to exit with a Postgraduate Diploma in Mental Health on successful completion of six modules. Students who successfully complete all the required elements of the M.Sc. course will be awarded an M.Sc. in Mental Health. The Child, Adolescent and Family strand of the MSc in Mental Health may only be taken over two years.

Admission Requirements

Candidates for this course will be currently working in mental health/mental illness field; and in the case of the Child, adolescent and family strand, be working in child, adolescent and family mental health services and have a minimum of one year's recent experience in the area of mental health/mental illness; and in the case of the child, adolescent and family strand, be currently employed in the area of mental health/mental illness/child, adolescent and family services and have Garda clearance for working with children and adolescents. Candidates will also normally hold an honors degree in a relevant discipline; or otherwise satisfy the selection panel that they have the ability to complete and benefit from the course.

About this degree

The programme will develop your ability to identify and analyse principles of policy, planning and management in child and adolescent mental health. You will gain professional, academic and research skills and understand how their application can improve clinical practice. You will increase your understanding of the impact of culture and diversity upon clinical theory and practice, and experience enhanced personal and professional development.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of five core modules (75 credits), three optional modules (45 credits) and a research dissertation (60 credits).

Dissertation/report

All MSc students undertake an independent research project which culminates in a dissertation of 10,000 to 12,000 words.

Teaching and learning

The programme is taught through a combination of lectures, workshops, discussion, project work and independent and group study. Assessment includes written assignments, unseen written examinations, projects, oral presentations, group work, and the written dissertation.

Placement

We are able to offer a limited number of clinical placements in Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services in various NHS Trusts. Places are not guaranteed and are based on availability.

The placements are a minimum of one day a week for a period of eight weeks and will be supervised by medical and non-medical consultants within the service.

Placements are observational only and will not be formally assessed but may offer opportunities to participate in research studies and other academic and teaching activities in the host trust.

The cost of the placement is in the range of £75 to £200.

The programme provides career development training for doctors, psychologists and practitioners in social work and education who intend to focus and develop their careers in the areas of child mental health.

This programme attracts psychology graduates who wish to enhance their opportunities for progression to further clinical psychology training, and trainees in child psychiatry who wish to supplement their basic training with a higher degree; the MSc programme is closely aligned to the Royal College’s recommended curriculum. Students from social work, nursing and education will benefit from the acquisition of advanced skills in the theory and practice of working with young people with mental health difficulties. Clinical placements are available as an extracurricular option for students who aim to develop their career in a profession related to clinical practice.

MA Child and Adolescent Mental Health is for you if you’re working with, or intend to work with children or young people whose social and emotional development and functioning is affected adversely, or who risk being affected by mental health difficulties. Students who wish to study the Masters at the University may be a graduate and/or have significant relevant experience.

At the University of South Wales, you will broaden your understanding of the causation, presentation and implications of child and adolescent mental health difficulties, and social emotional and behavioural difficulties. You’ll develop the knowledge and skills to input where appropriate into interventions for individuals and groups with child and adolescent mental health difficulties and social emotional and behavioural difficulties (CAMHD/SEBD). What you study

You will take two compulsory modules:

- Child and Adolescent Mental Health - The module introduces students to definitions and concepts in the field of CAMH and the current structuring of CAMH Services in the United Kingdom. Sessions look in detail at particular Mental Health Difficulties, which include Attachment Difficulties, Emotional Difficulties, and Behavioural Difficulties. Particular study is made of gender and culture in relation to Mental Health Difficulties and these sessions include a focus on eating disorders, self-harm and trauma.

- Research Methodology - In common with all of the MA Education programmes, you must take the core module; Research Methodology.

Additional specialist modules can include:

- Managing and Supporting Children and Adolescents with SEN (CAMH/SEBD) - This module focuses on the theory that underpins practice in this area of work, and compliments the core module. The module looks at definitions and conceptual difficulties in relation to CAMH and SEBD, and then goes on to examine how theory impacts on interventions in different models (therapeutic, behaviourist and bio-psycho-social.

- Children’s Wellbeing - This module takes a broad view of Children’s wellbeing by exploring the concept of, and the challenges of, measuring wellbeing in addition to considering how wellbeing is addressed in Health, Education, Social Care, Youth Justice and by Non-Governmental Organisations. The module will also explore and evaluate a range of approaches to promoting Children’s wellbeing and an integral part of the lecture programme will be the use of Visiting Lecturers to illustrate examples of evidence-based practice.

- Working with Vulnerable Children - This module examines contemporary models of childhood and adolescence and introduces the concepts of vulnerability, risk and resilience. The module also considers the challenges of research and intervention with vulnerable groups.

Alternatively you can take one module from one of the other MA Education pathways. To complete the full MA you will present a 17,000 word research dissertation and a 3,000 word research dissemination plan.

Learning and teaching methods

Each module is assessed via a written assignment of 5,000 words, which usually takes the form of an essay. Each course member is supported by a tutor who provides individual tutorials and guidance during the assignment writing process.

Assessment methods

To complete the full MA you will present a 17,000 word research dissertation and a 3,000 word research dissemination plan. If you wish to exit earlier, the Postgraduate Diploma is awarded to students who complete four modules which form the taught element.

This multidisciplinary course aims to promote an advanced level of knowledge and understanding in the area of child and adolescent mental health. It is designed for practitioners from health, social or voluntary services who work in some capacity with children and young people with mental health problems at first or second tiers of service provision.

Graduates of psychology and other cognate disciplines, social and behavioural sciences, education and related fields would also benefit from this programme. Some voluntary or professional experience of work with children and adolescents is desirable, but not essential.

Course content

The course explores child and adolescent mental health problems. Students will develop their understanding of child development and mental health difficulties in children and adolescents and will consider the implications of theory and research work with children and young people. The course is taught by a multidisciplinary team, to ensure students engage with a diverse range of perspectives. Child and adolescent mental health is understood in its developmental and social context and the course explores both theoretical and practice related issues. Research skills are also developed through a taught module and dissertation.

Modules are taught by practitioners and academics from psychology, social work, nursing, psychiatric nursing, law and psychiatry and as such engages with a diverse range of perspectives. Children and adolescents’ mental health is understood in its developmental and social context and the course explores both theoretical and practice related issues.

Research skills are also developed through a taught module and dissertation. Students of Child and Adolescent Mental Health can graduate with either a Postgraduate Diploma or an MSc.

Students completing an MSc will undertake an individual research project and submit a thesis. This is not required for the postgraduate diploma.

Child and Adolescent Mental Health Conference

The CAHMS Conference at the University of Northampton is a three day conference, and you have the option of either volunteering for a couple of hours and attending for free, or pay (last year it was about £15 per day) to cover the cost of lunches and printed materials.

Schedule

Each 30 credit module involves approximately 70 hours formal teaching with some additional placement attendance where relevant. Formal teaching takes place on approximately one day each fortnight for part time students and one to two days each week for full time students.

The full MSc runs for one year full time or two to four years part time. The programme begins in September.

Assessments

The assessment strategy is designed to include a broad range of assessment methods, in order to ensure that students have the maximum opportunity to demonstrate that they have met the learning outcomes for the programme. These include: essays, case studies, self-reflective log books, critical reviews, video recorded role plays and oral presentations. There are no examinations. The Research Methods and Dissertation module supports the students in completing a supervised but original and independently undertaken piece of research and it is assessed through a 12,000 to 15,000 word dissertation.

The MSc Children and Young People's Mental Health and Psychological Practice (Online Distance Learning) offers a unique perspective: that children and young people’s mental health and well-being is influenced by developmental processes at multiple levels, from individual to socio-cultural and that approaches to working with mental health and well-being need to be informed by this dynamic and interactional system.

By drawing on the knowledge and clinical experience of a world-class department of clinical and health psychology, the programme aims to equip students with the knowledge necessary for understanding children and young people’s mental health and well-being from this unique perspective. The programme will also draw upon many other theoretical areas, including early intervention, health promotion, public health, health and social inequalities, critical psychology, developmental psychopathology and resilience.

You will then focus on innovation in mental health with a particular focus on your own area of interest, while the importance of an integrated approach to mental health services will be emphasised and investigated.

A module focused on research methods will equip you with the skills required to complete a dissertation of a publishable standard in your chosen discipline.

The research-active programme team has direct experience of working with children, young people, families and communities, including experience of working in the mental health sector and in child and adolescent mental health services.

Additional expertise will be provided by guest lecturers who will be invited to share their knowledge and experience of subjects such as eating disorders and therapeutic interventions.

The research interests of the programme team include the use of early interventions and parenting on the resilience of children, the use of sports in the development and enhancement of resilience in childhood, service quality provision and multiagency service provision.

What are my career prospects?

On successful completion of this programme, potential employment routes include pastoral support workers, special educational needs coordinators, children’s centre workers, youth workers, social care workers, teaching assistants, learning mentors, family support officers or parent liaison roles. The course is aimed at professionals working with children and young people with mental health issues. The course has been developed by a multi-professional team to provide new insights into working with complex family mental health issues in the community. The perspectives of practitioners from health, social care and education is integrated into the delivery of both modules.

The first module provides you with the framework for assessment of children and young people and the factors which impact on their emotional health. During this module attachment, family dynamics, concepts of risk and resilience are examined in depth.

The second module presents the aetiology of mental disorders and their management and treatment. You build your knowledge and skills in diagnostic tools, cognitive behavioural therapy, motivational interviewing, solution focused therapy, family therapy, sensory assessment/integration and psychotherapy through role play and personal research.

All practitioners are required to demonstrate extended specialist knowledge in their chosen speciality when they are applying for career progression. Completing this course allows you to demonstrate your extended knowledge in caring for children, adolescents and families with mental health issues. This course enables you to contribute to the workforce transformation agenda as you apply these skills in your workplace.

Focused upon early years: neuro/cognitive/physical development; attachment; family relationships; risk/resilience, parenting; etc.

  • Enhancing practice in child, adolescent and family mental health (30 credits)

Focuses on disorders and interventions/strategies that arise from childhood into adolescence, and how these impact upon the whole family and the community at large.

Modules can be undertaken as stand-alone, or as part of the PgCert and the credits awarded can then be transferred to further awards (PgDip, MSc Advanced Professional Practice) as appropriate.

Our Child and Adolescent Mental Health course is specifically designed for international and UK-based psychiatrists, paediatricians, and psychologists, as well as allied professionals who wish to develop their knowledge, skills and research methodologies in child and adolescent psychiatry, child development, therapeutic interventions and service models. You will develop clinical skills and be able to contribute to culturally-sensitive and clinically-effective services through relevant research, including health service development research.

You will be taught research methodology and statistics, issues relating to child development, aetiology of child and adolescent disorders, the psychological and physical treatments for emotional, behavioural and developmental disorders in children and young people. You will complete a research project, which could use quantitative or qualitative methodologies. You will also develop your skills in diagnosis, formulation and planning therapeutic interventions, service design, monitoring and evaluation. Clinical placements within CAMHS teams may also be arranged.

The programme is suitable for graduates of psychology or cognate disciplines, and those with experience of working with children and young people in clinical, social work or educational settings.

The programme explores the theoretical, conceptual and evidence base for psychological practice with children and young people while fostering a critical and reflective approach to their clinical application.

Programme structure

Teaching is delivered in a variety of engaging and interactive formats, including lectures, seminars, clinical workshops and tutor-led online learning environments.

The programme also offers high-quality CPD opportunities. Full-time MSc students take one core course and two option courses each semester. Part-time students choose one or two courses each semester.

This multidisciplinary course aims to promote an advanced level of knowledge and understanding underpinning practice in the area of Counselling with Children Young People and their families.

Course content

This exciting course supports students in developing skills and theoretical knowledge of counselling with children, young people and their families. It is designed for individuals with a significant interest in counselling work with children, who may be practitioners from health, social or voluntary services who work in some capacity with children and young people, or who may be graduates of psychology and other cognate disciplines, social and behavioural sciences, education, health, social care and related fields.

The course is taught by experienced counsellors and therapists with a varied background, supported by some practitioners from allied professions (e.g. psychology, social work, nursing, psychiatric nursing, law and psychiatry).

Students of Counselling with Children and Young People can graduate with either a Postgraduate Diploma or an MSc.

Child and Adolescent Mental Health Conference

The CAHMS Conference at the University of Northampton is a three day conference, and you have the option of either volunteering for a couple of hours and attending for free, or pay (last year it was about £15 per day) to cover the cost of lunches and printed materials.

Schedule

Formal teaching takes place and on one to two full days per week for full-time students and on one full day per week in the first year and one full day approximately every other week in the second year for part-time students.

In addition, there is a three day taught intensive session for all students three times per year (first year only). In addition to this, students will be expected to attend one-to-one tutorials at least twice per trimester.

Assessments

The assessment strategy is designed to include a broad range of assessment methods, in order to ensure that students have the maximum opportunity to demonstrate that they have met the learning outcomes for the programme. These include: essays, case studies, self-reflective log books, critical reviews, video recorded role plays and oral presentations. There are no examinations.

The Research Methods and Dissertation module supports the students in completing a supervised but original and independently undertaken research and it is assessed through a 12,000 to 15,000 word dissertation.

Facilities and Special Features

-The MSc promotes an advanced theoretical understanding of Counselling with Children and Young People, integrating opportunities to develop practical and professional counselling skills.
-The programme equips students with a working knowledge of child development, psychological difficulties in children and young people in their contexts and counselling based skills for working with them and their carers within an an eco-systemic perspective integrating Systemic Family Therapy, CBT, and Creative therapies.
-This is developed through roleplays, small group process and other skill oriented taught sessions. Supervised placement in a counselling context is mandatory to the enhancement of skills.
-In addition, opportunities for students are structured into the programme to engage in personal development, self-awareness, reflective practice and to benefit from the supervisory relationship. Our CAMH conference (see highlight video below) is an excellent example of extra opportunities available as part of the course.
-Our experienced course team includes specific expertise in CBT, systemic family therapy, Creative therapies, Play therapy and Gestalt approaches, who are able to teach students and integrated approach to counselling with children and young people.

Careers

As a professional master programme, the MSc CCYP leads to a counselling qualification and opens a range of employment possibilities up for its graduates (e.g. private practice, educational and healthcare institutions, community and youth work services, third sector organizations, residential facilities). Graduates may take the MSc as a stepping stone towards further postgraduate study (e.g. Clinical Doctorate).

For students with a first degree in psychology (which is Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) accredited) further postgraduate training opportunities will include doctoral training on British Psychological Society (BPS) accredited courses in Counselling Psychology. Graduates of the programme will be able to work as a counsellor in a range of settings such as healthcare and educational institutions, residential facilities and community and youth work agencies.

For students with a professional background (such as teaching, nursing and social work) the programme will strengthen your skills and competencies and allow you to develop a strong specialism in children’s mental health. You will have the skills to appropriately position yourself as a counsellor and will have a good critical and in-depth understanding of professional practices when working with children, young people, families, parents and carers.

Work Experience - A supervised placement practice of a minimum of 100 hours is compulsory.

On-course requirements

To count towards a professional body accreditation, such as UKCP or BACP, the course require students to undertake a supervised placement practice of a minimum of 100 hours and a minimum 40 hours of personal therapy with an approved and BACP or UKCP accredited counsellor or therapist. A student membership of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), a professional indemnity insurance and a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check are also mandatory. These requirements imply additional costs on the top of the fee.

Our research involves national and international collaborations, with many projects involving NHS partnerships.

We have specific research strengths in the areas of children and adolescents; developmental psychopathology of mental health; ageing and older adulthood; adult psychological problems; brain injury; chronic health conditions; psychological therapies research, including cognitive behavioural interventions; emotions and emotion regulation; sex offenders; learning disability; neuropsychology; quality of life; severe and enduring mental health problems; and the development and validation of measures.

This programme, developed in partnership with the NHS, combines academic teaching with clinical practice training in applied psychology for children and young people.

It offers an opportunity to develop knowledge and competence in the delivery of evidence-based psychological interventions, for this specific group.

This programme aims to train psychology graduates in the range of skills and competencies essential for the delivery of tier two psychological assessments and interventions in a range of services for children, young people and their families.

You will be employed in a one-year clinical placement in the Scottish NHS Child & Adolescent Mental Health Service, gaining valuable experience applying psychological theory to practice, under the supervision of a qualified clinical psychologist.

Alongside essential elements for applied psychologists in health (e.g. assessment and formulation, and evaluation) and child and adolescent mental health professionals (e.g. safeguarding children, child and adolescent development and health promotion), there is a particular focus on the early years and early intervention. There is also a strong emphasis on parenting and supporting parents through evidence-based models of parent-focused intervention.

The clinical experience gained on placement facilitates linking theory to practice and fosters the development of professional skills necessary for post-qualification practice.

Programme structure

The programme is a one year, full-time course with teaching delivered at both the University of Edinburgh and NHS partnership sites in Glasgow.
