Exploring the evidence base underpinning Child Public Health policy in the UK and Internationally, this course examines health issues for children (and their families) aged 0 – 11 years such as perinatal health, nutrition and immunisations. It highlights the importance of child health, not only as a concept of illness, but as affecting wider long term educational, social and emotional development.
The Child Public Health programme uses a bio-psycho-social approach to critically evaluate the multitude of factors that influence child health and the role of multi-disciplinary professionals, policy makers and government in child health promotion and governance. Overall, it will emphasise the importance of the early years upon future child and population health and consider the public health policies and interventions established to promote and enhance this.

MSc Child Public Health students will take 180 credits comprising five compulsory modules (20 credits each), one optional module (20 credits) and a dissertation (60 credits).
Students wishing to exit on successful completion of 60 credits at level M can be awarded a PGCert in Child Public Health.
Students who successfully complete 120 credits at level M but do not successfully complete the Dissertation module can exit with a PGDip in Child Public Health.
The teaching team consists of staff with backgrounds in teaching, research and professional expertise in the field of child public health. The team is active in their research and have considerable experience of encouraging students to publish their research; an indicator of high quality.

The course will enable biomedical & clinical students (including research midwives and nurses) to develop an academic and contemporary understanding of the biological and environmental influences that impact on pregnancy and the lifelong physical and mental wellbeing health of women and their infants
Students will gain insight and knowledge of how translation of basic science and clinical observation can lead to cutting edge research studies into new diagnostic and treatments both in the UK and in low resource settings globally. .
Students will develop scientific and clinical practical research skills, including statistics, so that they can confidently critically evaluate others research design and results, and apply these to their own research. They will also be given the necessary research knowledge and skills to design, plan, navigate research governance pathways, and conduct and analyse their own research project. Both scientific and clinical research projects are offered.
The MSc Women and Children's Health comprises three core taught modules, including ‘Fundamentals of Womens and Children’s Health’ which covers health and disease from the periconception period to birth and early childhood. Research led lectures will cover topics such as infertility, pre-pregnancy health, placentation, preeclampsia; immunology of pregnancy and autoimmune disease, metabolic disease in pregnancy, parturition and dysfunctional labour, miscarriage and preterm birth, lactation and infant nutrition, the developing brain and prematurity, childhood diet and dental health, premature infant and the neonatal lung, gut microbiome, obesity, childhood allergy, epigenetics and lifelong health, nutrition and global health and perinatal mental health.
The other required taught modules are Statistics and Research Governance, and Scientific and Clinical Research skills followed by an intensive six month core research projectwithin a lab or clinical research group.
Students can also select 1-2 optional taught module(s) to tailor the course to their developing interests, examples include Perinatal Mental Health, Ethics in Child Health, Regenerative Medicine, Principles of Implementation and Improvement, Science, Leadership and Management, Birth Defects, Assisted Conception, Regenerative Medicine and Global Women's Health.

A typical week would be have approximately 10-15 hours teaching with the remaining hours dedicated to self-guided learning. In the final semester, research projects are full time with hours dedicated to practical and data collection, data analysis and writing.
You will study via a combination of lectures, journal clubs, group discussions, practicals, workshops and independent study.
Peer feedback, in course assignments such as data handling, research project and project report write-up, journal club, presentations and essays. All will be actively encouraged throughout the research project.
Typically, one credit equates to 10 hours of work.
We will assess you through a combination of coursework, seen/unseen written exams, essays, problem directed learning exercises, case studies, ethical problem debate, data-handling, creation of clinical study materials such as patient information sheets and consent forms, research proposal, oral presentations, and a final research project report.

This programme has been designed to provide an integrated, coherent and multidisciplinary approach to public health activity. It will have an emphasis on advancing critical awareness and problem solving skills in order to develop innovative, reflective and pro-active approaches to meeting challenging and complex health needs. Examples include critical health issues such as obesity and mental health, and those linked with public protection such as climate change and infectious diseases.
It will be delivered by a range of teaching methods such as core lectures, group work, online activities, use of case studies and directed learning approaches. Shared learning with other professionals will be a focus of this course and students will be encouraged to develop a critical, evaluative approach to the knowledge which underpins present-day public health practice.
This postgraduate award prepares students for a career in Public Health at both strategic and operational levels. The full MSc consists of five compulsory modules, and two designated modules. Compulsory modules are those which every student must undertake. Designated modules are those that have been identified as offering a range of public health topics which students can choose dependent on their experience and specialism.
All modules (except the Dissertation) incorporate 200 hours of learning, which includes taught sessions as well as self-directed independent study and assignment preparation. Furthermore, (included in the 200 hours) are six study days, in which students are expected to either attend lectures or work online on electronic activities via the online learning environment, NILE.
The teaching team have created a flexible and challenging Public Health programme, which involves face-to-face teaching, workshops and tutorials, as well as three of the core modules having an extensive self-directed online component. Opportunities exist to undertake a volunteering post within a Public Health environment and to gain experience of working within a Non-Governmental Organisation whilst ‘giving back’ to the vulnerable in society.
Embedded within the course are sessions from the University Centre for Employability and Engagement (UCEE), who offer support and advice to students in both cohort groups and on a one-to-one basis for; CV writing, interview techniques and help with locating a volunteer placement. The programme is offered through a full time or part time route. The part time programme is through flexible modular delivery which enables part time students to access modules at a pace that suits individual needs. The full time programme is more structured in order to enable students to complete within a one year time frame.
There are a range of teaching and learning methods used within this programme including core lectures; action learning and group work; online activity; tutorials and workshops. It is anticipated that students will have some background within public health environments and will therefore bring some knowledge and skills to this learning experience. Students will be encouraged to debate, discuss and reflect on contemporary public health issues in order to enhance learning.
This programme comprises of a range of assessment strategies which enables students to demonstrate knowledge, synthesis and analysis in a variety of forms. Assessment strategies include exams, vivas, reports, proposals, essays, audio taped interventions and presentations. The aim of the assignment programme is not only to test knowledge and skills but also to develop these skills (for instance, the ability to present to a group of people). Students can expect between one and three items of assessment per module and these are spread evenly throughout the three trimesters which make up the academic year.
Students have the opportunity to undertake a designated Voluntary Placement module and engage in a minimum of 50 hours of volunteering in a placement relevant to Public Health. This course will also:

Public Health is a growing field of study, therefore there is an abundance of job opportunities to suit a variety of interests and skills. A Master’s degree will help career advancement within a variety of organisations and professions such as health and social care, local authority, and voluntary organisations.

Kirsty Mason has been a Programme Leader of Masters Level Courses in the Faculty of Health and Society for numerous years and has 14 years’ experience of working as a Senior Lecturer in Public Health. Prior to working in academia, Kirsty worked as a Specialist Public Health Practitioner within Primary Care and has extensive experience of working with individuals, families and communities to improve their health and wellbeing. Kirsty is interested in teaching Public Health and Health Promotion as well as supervising Public Health Masters Dissertations. Her MSc in Public Health and Primary Health Care was gained from the University of Warwick and Kirsty has a keen interest in undertaking research using a phenomenological approach, her recent research activity includes researching non-medical prescribing in public health and how Children’s Centres enhance health outcomes for families.

A blended learning approach will provide the foundation to the teaching and learning strategy by way of Seminars, Masterclasses, action learning, guided independent study, simulation and workshops. Theoretical learning will be complemented by Field of Practice and Level specific seminar group facilitation, discussion, dissemination and formative feedback.
The course has an equal split between time spent in theory and time spent in practice.
Applicants should be aware that in order to successfully complete the programme and be eligible to apply for registration as a Registered Nurse (RN), that they will need to evidence 2,300 hours of theoretical learning and 2,300 Practice learning (4,600 hours in total). This is a programme requirement and so may not be reflected in the allocated specified hours of learning on the academic module specifications.
Assessment methods are varied and include assignments, presentations, observed structured clinical examinations, exams and portfolio assessment.
Our Clinical Practice Wards are located in the Mary Seacole Building on the second floor. There are four rooms designed to give the look and feel of a hospital environment. The rooms are furnished with patient's beds, lockers, chairs, sinks and curtains as well as audio-visual equipment, internet and a teaching area.
We also have a number of clinical skills rooms that enhance student learning from taking blood pressure, to giving CPR and more complicated procedures. Along with nursing skills rooms where you can practice in a ward situation, there are basic skills rooms for sessions such as moving and handling.
The patient simulation laboratory provides you with the opportunity to tackle real-life scenarios in a safe and supported environment. Set up like a hospital ward, the lab contains hi-tech patient simulators that can mimic everything from the common cold to a major heart condition.

All the simulation equipment can be linked up to some very hi-tech computer and audio-visual aids. Groups of students get to role-play a wide range of different scenarios, with a lab co-ordinator observing, running and intervening in the scenario remotely.
Sophisticated computer equipment can also provide detailed physiological information for each of the simulators under observation. The lab will help you develop the clinical skills you need but also the high level communication skills that will make a real difference to your patients.
Following successful completion of this course you will be able to gain employment in the nursing field related to your choice of branch. You will be equipped to embrace the challenges that working in health care in the 21st century brings. You will be employable within the NHS and in private health care organisations and may wish to pursue a career in health care management having already experienced study at postgraduate level.
We have close links with health care providers all over greater Manchester. This includes hospital, community, NHS, charity and social enterprise organisations. As a student nurse it is expected that you will spend around 50% of your time out on placement in one of these organisations and you will be is allocated a placement mentor who is there to help support you through the clinical elements of this course.
You may wish to pursue further study by undertaking a research degree.

This postgraduate nursing programme is designed for graduates from other disciplines who wish to gain professional registration in Adult, Children's or Mental Health Nursing. The programme runs over two years.
The programme focuses on quality care, cutting edge clinical skills and is designed to be both research intensive and research informed. You will learn the pivotal roles of nurse and client, while developing your nursing skills and building your knowledge of professional and ethical practice. This innovative programme ensures our students meet the registration requirements of the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
Subjects such as nursing bioscience, professional practice, research, evidence-based practice, policy and clinical leadership, as well as adult, children's or mental health nursing are studied. The programme is divided between theoretical modules and clinical practice, with blocks of time spent in clinical placement.
You will have the opportunity to gain experience in a variety of healthcare settings. Opportunities for national and international electives are also offered.
The primary aim of the programme is to support students as they progress towards registered practitioner level and beyond, and to provide a framework within which they can acquire and demonstrate both generic transferable competencies and those specific to their area of practice.

All students on nursing programmes are required to undertake an enhanced DBS check and all must give consent to this. Completed DBS checks must be received prior to the student undertaking any clinical placement. All students attend Occupational Health (OH) on entry the programme. All applicants are required to make an APEL claim. Pre-registration nursing programmes should normally be no less than three years. However, the use of APEL permits us to offer a programme of two years duration to those applicants who can show evidence of prior learning relevant to the programme.
