Our Postgraduate Diploma in Law/CPE is recognised as a qualifying law degree. It will expand the knowledge of those working in the justice, social and consumer sectors, as well as supporting a move to a career as a barrister or solicitor. Accredited by the Solicitors Regulation Authority and the bar Standards Board, this course enables graduates in non-law related studies to convert to a career in law.

Experienced lecturers will support you through this practice-led, skills-based course, integrating guest talks from local practitioners and judges. Extracurricular activities, such as mooting, client interviewing and pro bono work, allow you to develop practical skills in legal research, problem-solving, critical analysis and communication.

Classes are taught in small groups of exclusively postgraduate law students by enthusiastic, expert lecturers who are committed to research and teaching excellence. You can take this course either full-time or part-time.

After finishing the Law CPE, you can achieve a masters in Law (LLM) by successfully completing a dissertation module.

Course structure

The part-time course is based on an average study commitment of 20 hours per week, 14 hours of which is private study. Full-time students are expected to devote 30 hours per week to study outside class time.

Before you start this course, you need to complete a programme of preliminary reading. The programme begins in September with a module on the English legal system, which provides you with the foundation needed to underpin your legal studies.

Teaching methods include lectures, seminars and workshops. Assessment is by means of coursework and exams.

Core modules will give you practical knowledge in a variety of logistics and supply areas as well as key business skills such as financial analysis. In term 3 you will be able to tailor your course through a choice of two option modules and a final project or work placement.

Our Law CPE is recognised by the Solicitors Regulation Authority and the Bar Standards Board as a qualifying law course.

The course provides you with exemptions from the academic stage of legal training, allowing you to progress onto the vocational stage to become a barrister or solicitor. Court room experience

Our University of Brighton Innocence Programme provides you with the opportunity to investigate wrongful criminal convictions, referring them back to the Court of Appeal. Supervised by academics and working with practising lawyers, you provide pro bono assistance to prisoners who maintain their innocence and have exhausted their appeal rights.

Careers and employability

On successful completion of the Common Professional Examination (CPE), you will be awarded a postgraduate diploma in Law. The diploma satisfies all the requirements of the Joint Academic Stage Board for completing the academic stage of professional legal training. You can progress onto the Legal Practice Course to become a solicitor, or the Bar Professional Training Course to become a barrister.

The course is also highly relevant to a range of other occupations within the justice sector and those with a significant law aspect, such as consumer, housing and welfare advice work, social work, the prosecution service and the police.

Upon completion of the Law CPE, you can obtain a masters in Law (LLM) by successfully completing a dissertation module.

It has been fully revised and redesigned in line with other MA courses at the University to facilitate exchange of modules and a longer period of individual research. It is taught jointly by members of the School of Law and the School of Public Policy and Professional Practice as an interdisciplinary course and attracts students from a wide variety of professional backgrounds. The course is specially designed so that it may be taken by those who are in full-time employment. The course content reflects developments and current debates in childcare law and practice. The Keele Law School is highly rated and internationally recognised for teaching and research.

Course Aims

The central aims of the course are to update and enhance knowledge of relevant law and research literature and to provide an opportunity for experienced practitioners to further develop and critically reflect upon their skills, as applied to a variety of areas and settings in work with children. It also aims to promote anti-discriminatory practice, inter-agency understanding and interdisciplinary working.

The programme is structured in a way that allows students to maintain full-time employment while studying, with teaching for each module taking place over an intensive 3-day period. The programme, therefore, is designed to appeal to both the ‘conventional’ postgraduate student and specifically, those already engaged professionally in this area of activity, in social work, health, the legal profession or otherwise.

Course Structure and Content

The taught Masters programme requires satisfactory completion of at least 180 credits, made up of 4 taught modules each of 30 credits (120 credits) plus a dissertation of 15,000-20,000 words (60 credits). Alternatively, students may finish their studies after obtaining the 120 taught credits and obtain a Postgraduate Diploma. Each student is provided with a personal tutor to assist with studies. The course takes an interdisciplinary approach, drawing upon sociology, social policy, law and childcare practice.

The programme starts with a two day induction course. The teaching of modules takes place over four intensive three-day blocks between September and May. This structure particularly benefits part-time students who appreciate ‘time out’ in an accessible academic environment. If required, the modules can be undertaken over a period of up to four years for further flexibility. During the research year, students wishing to complete the MA attend one, two day block, and a further day later in the year followed by supervision of work towards a dissertation. The full course duration is between two and five years. Any student wishing to study one or two modules should contact the School.

Teaching & Assessment

Assessment is based on coursework and a dissertation. There are no exams. Assessment of each taught module is by written assignment of about 5,000 words each. A choice of essay titles is provided for each block. In the research year the emphasis is on independent research – there is a research methods assignment of 2,000 words formatively assessed and a dissertation of between 15,000 and 20,000 words. The pass mark for all assessments is 50%.
The modules are taught through 20 hours of contact time, delivered as an intensive three-day block of teaching.

During the module, students will take part in tutor-led seminars and discussions, small group exercises, and case studies. Each module is accompanied by extensive independent study and throughout the course students are encouraged and required to undertake independent reading to both supplement and consolidate the classes and to broaden individual knowledge and understanding of the subject.

All students receive initial guidance on how to identify, locate and use materials available in libraries and elsewhere (including electronic sources). Guidelines are provided for the production of coursework assignments and dissertations and these are reinforced by seminars and individual supervision, which focus specifically on essay planning and writing, and research methodology. Detailed written and, if requested, oral feedback is provided on all course work. There is also time set aside during each module and outside the modules for students to consult individually with teaching staff and receive guidance and feedback on assessment and module performance.

While away from Keele, between teaching blocks, students will benefit from directed reading, additional resources posted on the KLE together with a KLE based discussion page for ‘virtual’ interaction between students.

Additional Costs

Modules across the programme will include recommended core and supplemental texts. Costs will vary depending on the particular text (Law textbooks vary between £20-40).

Apart from additional costs for text books, inter-library loans and potential overdue library fines we do not anticipate any additional costs for this post graduate programme.

Department research and industry highlights

Course content and structure

The MSc in Social Work is a two-year course that runs over two academic years, and is based at Royal Holloway’s Egham campus. The course is full time and students are expected to attend from 9am - 5pm, both in College and while on placement. The course integrates theory, research, policy and practice in social work, and the academic and practice programmes run concurrently.

In the first year you'll attend College four days a week during the first term. In the second term you are on placement (70 days) from Monday to Thursday and in College on Fridays. The placement continues in the third term. There are occasional block weeks on placement and Recall Days when you need to attend College.

In year two you'll attend College on Mondays and Tuesdays and are on placement (100 days) the rest of the time. Again there are occasional block weeks on placement and Recall Days when you need to attend College. Childhood is accorded a special status under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and child welfare forms a policy focus for states across the globe. Within the UK, child health and social care has received considerable support under the government's modernising agenda leading to an increase in childcare provision, employment opportunities and a growing evidence and academic knowledge base. The School of Social Work has been active in developments in child care practice and research and has developed a strong child care research group which has contributed to our success in establishing a research profile of national and international significance. The school is home to the Centre for Childhood and Youth research [‘TheCentre’] led by Professors Nigel Thomas and Andy Bilson and is an active member of the Making Research Count Network.

The course takes a research-applied approach to examining contemporary practice and service provision and also offers opportunities to engage in research and theoretical work. It is made up of three parts:

The Social Work MSc course is a professionally accredited programme leading to eligibility to apply to become a registered social worker with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). It has been designed to provide you with the opportunities to achieve the professional standards and capabilities as set out by the HCPC. A key aspect is to develop as a reflective and resilient practitioner.

Our graduates are equipped with the knowledge, skills and a critical understanding of different theoretical perspectives as applied to social work. You'll be joining a social work programme that has its history rooted in the principles of equality and social justice.

After the course

Moving to one campus

Between 2016 and 2020 we're investing £125 million in the London Metropolitan University campus, moving all of our activity to our current Holloway campus in Islington, north London. This will mean the teaching location of some courses will change over time.

Assessment

Assessment of the programme is continuous with assignments related to applicants' specialism and a weekly reflective discussion. Teaching practice is integral and must be passed.

The University of Northampton Advanced Professional Practice Masters is an MSc course, offering full-time and part-time options.

Students studying for the full Master of Science degree complete 180 credits, choosing from a selection of modules and a 60 credit professional project. Shorter Postgraduate Diploma and Postgraduate Certificate options are also available.

Drawing on contemporary teaching and innovative research, the programme will enable students to develop their professional practice in a highly personalised way. This innovative and flexible course allows you to build a course that is tailored to your needs.

The programme is made up of modules which make up the whole Master’s Degree, but there is an option to opt to leave at that point having earned a Postgraduate Diploma.

The programme is based around three key areas:

Course content

The MSc Advanced Professional Practice presents a highly flexible programme of study which students can tailor to meet their personal and professional development objectives.

An innovative development for this award is the introduction of a Valuing Professional Experience module. Available to study for 20, 40 or 60 academic credits, this module will allow students to demonstrate the value of their professional experience in relation to academic learning. As such, students can, with the help of a programme advisor, create an individual programme of study which draws on past experience and enhances current and future practice.

Assessments

Assessment across all modules draws on relevant practice examples and students are encouraged to use case examples as the basis of their learning.

The specific methods reflect the ways in which practitioners are expected to function in their professional roles and may include: preparation of patient information resources, critical incident reports, care planning, action learning sets and preparation of professional reports for family courts.

This Lifelong Learning teacher education programme leads to the required qualification for those who intend to teach in further education colleges, sixth-form colleges, adult education centres, art colleges, health care or community organisations, the public services and a wide range of commercial and voluntary organisations.

The programme covers the skills needed for teaching and classroom management and helps students to explore the theory underpinning teaching and learning.

The core full-time programme takes place in a placement college where students complete a minimum of 100 hours of teaching experience. In Phase 1, you will be attached to a placement college of further education or similar institution for three days a week to observe and undertake teaching in your subject area. You will be supported and assessed by a mentor and a tutor at the university. You will attend the university for the remaining two days of the week. In Phase 2, you will attend your placement college for four days a week to complete your teaching practice and to participate fully in a range of professional activities. You will attend the university for the remaining day of the week. You will specialise in your chosen subject during your placement and through your assignments. Study at the university, meanwhile, focuses on pedagogic skills and underpinning knowledge and provides a space for you to explore the relationship between theory and practice.

We are currently able to offer placements to full-time students, in the following subject areas: Art and design art (3D/2D); Beauty; Business; Catering; Childcare; Construction; English; ESOL; Graphic design; Hairdressing; Health and social care; IT and computing; Law; Leisure and tourism; Literacy; Media studies; Music technology; Numeracy; Performing arts; Photography; Psychology; Science; Sociology; Sports science.

The distance learning mode offers you the opportunity to study flexibly in your free time. You will be given study guides to work through and receive extra support via our virtual learning environment, where you can access course material and interact with tutors and other students. You will also be supported by a personal tutor throughout the programme. Mentors supporting will be responsible for carrying out three teaching observations a year and regular progress meetings.

The Postgraduate Diploma in Education - Teaching and Learning (FE and Skills) is a qualification similar to the PGCE but which offers you the chance to study entirely at Level 7 with the additional benefit of studying a specialist module in English, maths, SEND or Learning Technologies.
