There is increasing nursing field specialisation as the programme progresses which keeps you abreast of the current developments within your chosen field of nursing. Year 1 lays the foundations about what the role of the nurse is and introduces you to the Nursing and Midwifery code as well as theories and models of nursing and nursing skills. It also focuses on anatomy and physiology, determinants of health across the life span, communication, compassionate care, and ethics and inter-professional working. You will also begin to develop academic and research skills.

Year 2 to builds on the work undertaken previously, but also introduces factors which influence health and well-being such as global and national public health priorities. You will explore the impact of altered health status on the individual and their family/carers over the life span. In addition, you will acquire deeper understanding of inter-professional healthcare delivery which includes looking at aspects of co-production, individuals’ rights and inclusion.

Year 3 builds and consolidates your knowledge within your specific field of nursing. Here you will looks more specifically at complex health care needs, health care delivery, interventions, governance, leadership and decision-making. You will undertake a literature review which provides opportunities to build upon your prior learning and experience in an area of interest to you.

The aim of the MSc in Nursing - Child Health and Wellbeing is to provide a solid academic base to the understanding and development of nursing practice in the area of child health and illness. The strand will strengthen and develop the knowledge, skills, competencies and attitudes of the participants, thus enabling them to fulfill their highest potential in the personal, professional and practice arena of children's health. The strand will provide advanced study in research methods, the theoretical and practical aspects of management, clinical practice and leadership and child health perspectives as well as contemporary issues in child health and wellbeing. This new Master's degree will provide an in-depth knowledge of the theory and practical skills of clinical paediatrics, including pathology, diagnosis and management. The programme combines lectures and seminars at the UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health in year one with direct exposure to clinical practice in Great Ormond Street Hospital in year two.

About this degree

The programme will include disease pathology, the assessment of patients and the different therapies available, as well as their limitations and side effects. Students will have the unique opportunity to directly observe the implementation of clinical knowledge in the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of paediatric disease.

It is expected that most of the medically-qualified graduates from this pathway will pursue a career involving paediatric intensive care medicine in the UK or abroad. This may be as a general paediatrician with an interest in intensive care or as specialist intensivists. This programme provides experience in current practice within paediatric intensive care medicine and equips the student to do research in both PICM and other areas of interest. Placement

The programme team support students in obtaining volunteer placements in relevant mental health care and research settings, but this is not a formal part of the course and is entirely optional.

For non-clinicians, the programme will be an excellent grounding for clinical training, such as in clinical psychology, or for embarking on a research career in mental health. Many graduates go on to research assistant, clinical support worker or assistant psychologist posts as a first destination. Placement

We are able to offer a limited number of clinical placements in Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services in various NHS Trusts. Places are not guaranteed and are based on availability.

The placements are a minimum of one day a week for a period of eight weeks and will be supervised by medical and non-medical consultants within the service.

Placements are observational only and will not be formally assessed but may offer opportunities to participate in research studies and other academic and teaching activities in the host trust.

The cost of the placement is in the range of £75 to £200.
