A research degree in Welsh / Cymraeg gives you the chance to pursue a project based around your own passions and interests in Welsh / Cymraeg, leading to a qualification which can open the door to an academic career or boost employment prospects outside academia (in the private sector, the Civil Service, or education).

The MA by Research in Welsh / Cymraeg will give you the freedom to explore a topic of your own choosing in Welsh / Cymraeg and develop a methodology under the close supervision of two experienced academics in the field of Welsh / Cymraeg but without attending regular classes as required in taught programmes.

As a Welsh / Cymraeg research student you will be supervised closely by two experienced academics in the field of Welsh / Cymraeg. Typically, as a student enrolled in the MA by research in Welsh / Cymraeg you will meet them fortnightly in the first term and at regular intervals thereafter. Meetings are logged and goals agreed each time.

All research students including those of Welsh / Cymraeg programme are required to attend skills and training courses at College and Institutional level. They give presentations to other research students and staff at departmental seminars and the annual departmental postgraduate symposium including the Department of Welsh in June and the College of Arts and Humanities conference in October. Advanced research students including those of Welsh / Cymraeg may have opportunities to teach undergraduate tutorials and seminars. Welsh / Cymraeg research students have a budget (currently £200 per year) to attend conferences outside Swansea.

MA by Research in Welsh / Cymraeg degree typically lasts from one year (full-time study) to two years (part-time study).

The MA by Research in Welsh / Cymraeg is ideal for those who want:

- an MA qualification in niche areas where taught programmes are not offered;

The Postgraduate Certificate Practice Education is two module programme, which will enable you to fulfil the role of Practice Educator: supporting, assessing and training student social workers in practice.

Module 1: Practice Education 1, meets Stage 1 of the new Practice Educator Professional Standards (PEPS); you will normally complete this module in one year.

Module 2: Practice Education 2, meets Stage 2 of the PEPS, and successful completion of both modules will result in the award of the Postgraduate Certificate. A key feature of this programme is the possibility of importing and ‘upgrading’ credit from previously completed ‘ Enabling Learning ‘ courses . This may allow you to progress directly to the Practice Education 2 module and complete the Postgraduate Certificate in one year.

Format and assessment

The Postgraduate Certificate is a 60 credit course, and therefore comprises one third of the 180 credits required for the award of an MA. You can exit with the award of the Postgraduate Certificate, or may build upon this to complete your Postgraduate Diploma (a further 60 credits). A 60 credit dissertation module will then complete your MA. You can progress through the various levels of the programme at a pace that suits your professional and personal requirements: you may take between three and seven years to complete the full MA.

The certificate offers the opportunity to investigate, by means of practitioner research, a bespoke school-based focus.

Format and assessment

Typically the delivery includes up to ten face-to-face sessions over the period of one academic year.

The tutors working on the programme have been selected for their expertise in the chosen subject area: action learning expertise and research. Where possible the sessions will be taught by one academic (member of University staff) and a practitioner.

The core element will be assessed by two tasks and the project by one report on an area as negotiated with the tutor.

The programme creates a supportive reflective space for professionals to evaluate how their study impacts on practice and student learning outcomes.

The MA (Education) enables you to align your Masters study with existing school-based professional learning projects and/or school improvement plans.

How do I achieve a MA (Education)?

One content module will be available per semester. MA(Ed) modules include: Effective Pedagogy; Emotional Aspects of Learning; and Leading Learning.

The Critiquing the Effect of Workplace Learning module enables you to accredit informal workplace learning that you may be undertaking in your work setting.

Our MA(Ed) programme provides the opportunity to follow your own particular area of interest throughout every module, for example a specific focus on maths subject knowledge; SEND; or management. You will be encouraged and supported to ensure that the practitioner research you undertake during your study reflects your chosen focus, thus the programme is both specialised and personalised. Although this will not lead to a named specialist award, your modules will be shown on your academic transcript.

You are also able to select modules from other Masters programmes within the Institute of Education at the University of Chichester, for example MA in Inclusive Special Education.

Teaching assessment
Teaching

Two years (four semesters) at the rate of one module per semester, plus a further year (two semesters) for the dissertation (parts 1 and 2). We appreciate that circumstances can change and part-time students are helped by having flexible study arrangements. To that end, we permit you to intermit from the programme for a maximum of 2 years over the whole programme, provided that you return and complete the degree within 6 years.

A module is a unit of up to 24 hours taught/face-to-face delivery, typically over one semester with its own discrete assessment and carrying 30 M level credits. Each module is formed of small group seminars and one Saturday Workshop, held at Bognor Regis campus. Sessions will normally be delivered between 5.30 – 8.00 pm, but times may vary.

Assessment

The MA(Education) programme draws on a range of assessment methods including video diaries; practitioner research projects; 6,000 word essays; and presentations.

To gain a MA(Education), you will need to complete four modules and the dissertation parts 1 & 2 (4 x 30) + 60 = 180 credits.

It is your right to exit the programme at any time. After successful completion of two modules you would be awarded a Postgraduate Certificate in Professional Practice and after four modules you would be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma in Professional Practice.

This innovative, interdisciplinary MA Cultural History programme of study explores aspects of modern and contemporary history through different cultural forms including art, literature, music, dance and film. The purpose of the MA is to ground and enhance your knowledge of Cultural History. We define this concept broadly to mean studying peoples, places and ideas, as well as cultural forms (e.g. visual culture, literature, popular music, film and television).

Course content
There are two routes through the MA degree which are available to full-time and part-time students.

Route A (Taught): Full-time students will complete British Cultural History (taught for both semesters and achieving 60 credits) plus one further 30-credit module per semester.

On completion of 120 credits they will work on their dissertation.

Part-time students will complete British Cultural History in year 1 and two further taught modules in year 2. They will then proceed to their dissertation.

Route B (Research): Full-time students will complete British Cultural History and will then be allocated a research supervisor to work for the remaining 60 credits via two research modules.

On completion of 120 credits they will work on their dissertation.

The Primary Postgraduate Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) is a well-established, successful and rigorous initial teacher training programme for graduates who wish to become primary school teachers, teaching children aged 5-11 years.

This is a full-time programme that runs over one year. We also offer a specialist route in Modern Languages which qualifies you to teach all subjects to pupils aged 5-11 but includes modules allowing you to specialise in teaching a foreign language – French or Spanish.

The programme is taught at master’s level and allows students to gain up to 60 credits towards a master’s qualification. The course enables you to develop your skills of critical analysis and engage with educational research at the same time as developing practical classroom skills through school experience. By the end of the course, you’ll be equipped as reflective practitioners to continue your professional learning throughout your career.

Purpose

You’ll develop a broader understanding of the relationship between theory and practice in education and the wider context within which schools operate. You’ll also be able to identify areas for future development during your own teaching career.

Format and assessment

The programme’s taught by experienced and enthusiastic tutors, in partnership with mentors and teachers in local schools. It lasts 39 weeks and you’ll spend at least 24 weeks of this on placement in schools.

The PGCE programme is taught in affiliation with a range of primary schools. During the programme, you’ll be placed in two different schools for extended placements. Plus you’ll have three two-week group placements focusing on the teaching of maths, English or teaching pupils with Special Educational Needs.

The school experiences will draw on your own prior experiences and skills and develop them within the partnership of school-based and university-based training and support. During School Experience, school-based mentors are partners in identifying individual training needs and refining your individual action plans. Initially, you’ll focus on teaching small groups of pupils the core curriculum subjects, leading to proficiency in teaching a whole class subjects across the primary curriculum by the end of the second placement.

School Experience

For MFL students, there is the option of spending four weeks of the overall school experience in a placement abroad teaching in their chosen language.

We currently offer placements for speakers of French (teaching in French-speaking Belgium) and Spanish (teaching in Tenerife).

A typical pattern of school experience would be:

Autumn term - Eight weeks paired school experience (school A)
Spring term - Four weeks school experience abroad plus a two week enhanced placement focusing on the teaching of English
Summer term - Ten week school experience (school B)

Students will teach their foreign language for a minimum of one hour per week in school B.

Assessment

The course is assessed through observation during teaching placements and written assignments. To gain a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) students need to complete portfolio assignments at Level M (Postgraduate) and all blocks of School Experience.

Course detail

Students appreciate the creative and modern approach to language teaching provided by the Modern Languages course. Content includes thorough coverage of National Curriculum and assessment requirements combined with a focus on creativity in lesson planning and delivery.

Students will develop their understanding of how children acquire additional languages and how to best support their learning in listening, speaking, reading and writing. Particular attention is paid to the effective teaching of grammar to young learners and to the development of independent learners.

Students will develop a range of strategies to motivate young learners effectively, including through the use of song, drama and ICT. As part of the course students spend some time observing in Key Stage 2 and benefit from joint training with students on the Primary PGCE MFL specialism. There are opportunities for students to continue to improve their second foreign language.

Sessions are delivered at the Bognor Regis campus but also include a number of off-site visits to local partnership schools; there are also opportunities to benefit from the expertise of visiting speakers.

Our course includes a well-respected summer conference to which prospective, current and past students are invited along with local teachers, and which provides the opportunity to hear a number of national speakers present on a variety of engaging and thought-provoking topics.

The Science with Biology, Chemistry or Physics routes are designed to produce highly-skilled and outstanding science teachers who will enthuse and inspire children with a love of the subject and an ability to achieve in it at the highest levels.

Trainees with be trained to teach National Curriculum Science at both Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 and their subject specialism (Biology, Chemistry or Physics) to KS5.

The subject specific element of the course is delivered at a nearby partner school and is complemented by a Professional Studies programme, which is based at our Bognor Regis campus.

The subject studies focuses very much on turning a good understanding of educational theory into outstanding performance in the classroom.
