What you will study

To qualify as an ICAEW Chartered Accountant students are required to complete:
• 15 examinations
• 450 days of technical work experience, which you gain by obtaining a training contract with an appropriate employer
• Professional development (delivered through ICAEW or your employer)

The ACA Qualification comprises three examination levels: Certificate, Professional and Advanced. Weekly day release tuition (with block revision):

• Papers taught for one day per week, with a block revision period at the end

• Certificate Level papers – 10 weeks plus revision block

Certificate level:
Each assessment is 1.5 hours long and each exam will be e-assessed.

Professional level:
Modules will be assessed by paper based exams. Each will be 2.5 hours long, with the exception of the Financial Accounting and Reporting paper which will be assessed by a three hour exam.

Advanced level:
Consists of two technical integration papers and a case study:

• Technical integration papers will be 3.5 hours long
• Case Study will be four hours long

Learning and teaching methods

We offer a flexible portfolio of ACCA courses at our Newport City (part-time and full-time) and Cardiff (part-time only) campuses.

- ACCA at Atlantic House, Cardiff Campus:
ACCA tuition is now available at our Cardiff Campus for papers F7-F8 and Professional Level papers (excluding P4).

The course is delivered on an employer-friendly, afternoon-evening basis. Tuition occurs in weekly slots, with students attending one day per week. Tuition runs between September-December (for examinations in December) and January-June (for examinations in June). September-December deliveries also include additional whole days. Students can commence studies in either September or January.

Course delivery has been designed to offer an excellent platform to learn, with knowledge built up gradually and sustainably through exam question practice which is undertaken week-on-week. This mode of delivery also ensures that students are not required to be absent from their work place for long periods of time.

Methods are varied and include assignments written in report and essay format, comparative analyses, case studies, a skills development portfolio, presentations and group work. There are also two exams. The exams take place only in the first semester and are required by the CIPD across all approved programmes. Exam briefing is given is giving to help prepare you for these assessments.

There will also be a dissertation which carries 60 credits. The dissertation requires you to conduct a piece of empirical research on a topic of your choice (and approved by your tutor). Most students choose to conduct their research on a key ‘people management’ issue within their own organisation.

Professional accreditation

Students gain Associate Membership of the CIPD and you can apply for professional upgrading with the Institute linked to your professional experience to achieve Chartered Membership or Fellowship following successful completion of your programme of study. Our dedicated CIPD professional adviser can guide you on your application to upgrade to Chartered status.

You will need to join the CIPD when you begin your course.

Upgrading to Chartered Membership or Chartered Fellowship of the CIPD enables you to use the designate letters CMCIPD or CFCIPD, further enhancing your employability.

What is CILEx?

CILEx is an established legal professional body that represents over 20,000 trainee and practising legal executives in England and Wales.

An important feature of CILEx study is that it is open access. This means that students who have no previous legal experience or academic qualifications can start their legal education at Level 3 (equivalent to A Level standard), while those who have already completed a law degree or Graduate Diploma in Law are qualified to take the CILEx Graduate Fast-Track or CILEx Level 6 qualifications. Qualify as a chartered legal executive lawyer

To undertake the academic stage of training as a chartered legal executive lawyer, you must be over 16 years old and have registered as a member with CILEx. The academic stage of qualification as a chartered legal executive lawyer can be broken down into the following phases (depending on your entry level):
-CILEx Level 3 Certificate and the Diploma in Law and Practice
These two awards, each taking one year to study, form the academic stage of training. You can study for these awards without any previous legal experience or qualifications, but you need both to continue to the Level 6 academic stage of your training.
-CILEx Level 6 Higher Diploma in Law and Practice
This two-year, part-time course forms the second academic stage to becoming a chartered legal executive lawyer.
Once you have completed the Level 3 stage of your academic training you will become an associate member of CILEx; after you complete the Level 6 stage you will become a graduate member of CILEx.

Alternatively, if you already hold a qualifying law degree, the University of Westminster also offers a CILEx Level 6 Graduate Fast Track Diploma. This one-year course will equip you with the practice and professional skills you need to enter into the legal sector.

This is supported by a number of Research Methods Workshops throughout Year 2. The report is due for submission in June/July of Year 2.

- Year 3 MSc (post-diploma)
If you reach an appropriate standard you can choose to progress to the MSc. This requires a 15,000-word dissertation on an approved topic along with participation in a series of workshops on research methods.

Accreditation

The Postgraduate Diploma stage of this programme is accredited as meeting the knowledge requirements for Professional Membership of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) at Associate, Chartered Member or Chartered Fellow.

Additional PGDip requirements

Applicants who hold a CIPD Intermediate level qualification or HND in a relevant subject may also be considered. Applicants must also have relevant experience in human resource management or in a people management role.

Alternative routes to entry may be available for candidates who hold a CIPD Foundation level qualification, or HNC in a relevant subject area, and have significant work experience in human resources or in a people management role.

Learning & teaching

There'll be a series of taught modules, seminars, guest lectures given by distinguished HR professionals, and a business skills development programme.

Assessment

The course modules are assessed by various methods which include essays, individual and group projects and final exams. The exams are generally held in January and April/May. The pattern and weighting of assessment methods varies between modules.

Continuous Professional Development (CPD) Record

You’ll keep a CPD Record that describes all your important learning activities and experiences during the course. Submission of a satisfactory CPD Record is a requirement for completion of the course.

It is ideal for people wanting to develop their professional public relations expertise at a number of different stages in their career.

This course provides PR practitioners with the knowledge and understanding of theory and practice to develop as effective and efficient professionals. You will understand the practice of public relations as a strategic management function, and will develop planning expertise as well as being encouraged to analyse existing practice from a critical perspective. You will benefit from sharing experiences and developing a professional network of colleagues in similar situations.

The individual project which forms part of the course offers you the opportunity to work with a supervisor over a number of months to produce a well-researched piece of work focusing on an area of your choice. Students often choose to devote this opportunity to help develop or improve specific work projects, or to develop their expertise in a particular area of public relations practice.

You must have ONE of the following requirements:
- CIPR Advanced Certificate in Public Relations
- CIPR Internal Communication Certificate plus one year’s full-time employment in PR
- Postgraduate professional qualification in a related discipline (eg CIM diploma), plus one year’s full-time
employment (or equivalent part-time employment) in PR
- A degree in business/marketing/management/communication studies, plus one year’s full-time employment in PR
- Any other UK degree plus two years full time employment in PR
- NCTJ Diploma plus either five years’ journalism experience or three years’ full-time employment in PR
- Two years’ full-time employment in PR*, and the CAM Advanced Diploma in Marketing Communication
- LCCIEB 5 3rd Level subjects, including PR, Marketing, Advertising, Principles & Practice of Management, plus two years’ experience in PR
- Four years’ full-time employment in PR and five GCSE passes, one of which must be in English Language.

International: Those whose first language is not English must be able to demonstrate proficiency in the language - spoken and written - to an International Language Testing System (IELTS) band score of 6.5 or equivalent.

Students who need to complete all elements can do so over a four year period. Students with exemptions will take less time than this, while others may opt for a longer period of study. Tuition hours are between 50 and 60 hours per paper, depending on level.

Learning and teaching methods

Students will attend a combination of lectures, tutorials and workshops.

Assessment methods

The internal papers are assessed by coursework (30%) and end of year examination (70%). The coursework is designed to test soft skills such as group work, report writing and presentations. The external papers are assessed by end of session examination.

Employment Prospects

This qualification, subject to ACCA’s practical experience requirements, enables you to become a Chartered Certified Accountant, use the designatory letters ACCA after your name and to typically work across a range of finance or management roles in any business. Some students then opt to study at postgraduate degree level. A Professional Fast-track MSc Accounting & Finance course is available for full ACCA members at the University of South Wales.

Students who have passed or who are exempted from ACCA papers F1 to F9, can study our full MSc Accounting & Finance – with ACCA tuition and complete an MSc and ACCA Professional level course simultaneously.
