This is the first and only MA Character Education in the world – focusing on the theory and practice of human flourishing. The programme adopts a broad understanding of character – encompassing aspects of wellbeing, ethics, citizenship and social and emotional education.
Students on the course come from a range of sectors; including education (formal and non-formal), voluntary and business. The curriculum allows students to apply the topics most relevant to their personal or employers interests and goals.
The course will be run by The Jubilee Centre for Character and Virtueswhich is widely acknowledged as one of the foremost research and teaching centres in the world specialising in the examination of how character and virtues impact on individuals and society. You will be taught by some of the best known names, both in Britain and internationally, in character education.

Drawing on the wealth of research and experience of academics in the Jubilee Centre for Character and Virtues and internationally regarded academics attached to the Centre, this programme will enable you to develop your knowledge and expertise in the field of character education.

The programme will provide you with a broad multidisciplinary knowledge and understanding of how key theories in psychology, philosophy and education inform planning, administration, policy and professional practice. Through modules including various forms of assessment, and dedicated personal tutorial support, you will learn to critically evaluate education research from theoretical and methodological perspectives in order to contribute to character education and will gain fundamental skills in data analysis and critical thinking, which can be applied to your own professional contexts.
The programme includes an optional on-campus residential for students. This is highly recommended for students in the Uk and Europe and the rest of the world.
Learning takes place on the Canvas virtual learning platform. Each module is broken up into 5 units of learning - which you work through at your own pace over the duration of two weeks. Modules last 11 weeks (5 units plus a reading week) and 3 are completed consecutively throughout each of the first two years. The final year consists of a dissertation on a topic of your choice.
Each unit consist of a number of steps – including mini teaching films explaining key concepts, associated reading (mainly free and available through the online library), and interactive elements including discussion boards and quizzes. Assignments are normally due 4 to 5 weeks after completion of the fifth unit. Time to complete assignments generally coincides with the Christmas, Easter or summer holidays.
You will have a designated Programme Tutor who will be in regular contact with you through the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), via email, telephone or Skype. In addition you will also have regular contact with the Module Leaders / Tutors through VLE, email, Sykpe and telephone.
Lecturers running modules on the course will include: Professor James Arthur, Professor Kristjan Kristjansson, Dr Tom Harrison as well as other internationally recognised names in the field.
Assessment will be through essays, online presentations (written or verbal), a fieldwork report and a dissertation.
The MA in Character Education has been developed in response to the overwhelming interest in character education (and associated concerns such as wellbeing, social mobility, ethics) from policy makers and parents as well as teachers themselves. Completion of the programme will ensure that you will further your understanding of this area and will gain the knowledge and experience to implement informed change in your own organisation.
Profiles of students on the programme vary. Significant is also the growing demand in the fields of games, animation productions cross and transmedia, special effects for movies and television productions. The Master in Animation Design offers the possibility to fit into one of these professional sectors: in independent production companies, research and design consultancies, service agencies, internal structures of broadcasters, specialized departments of publishing houses.
Career opportunities - The Animation Designer can fit into the professional field of animation production, cross and transmedia. The Master guarantees a highly qualifying expertise for profiles such as Concept Artist, Character Designer, Ambient Designer, Storyboard Artist; Character Animator 2D; Character Animator 3D; Production Assistant; Compositor.
How can mental health problems such as anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and grieving problems best be studied and treated? How can we prevent them from occuring, improve treatment results and prevent relapse? You will address these and similar kinds of questions in the Master’s programme Clinical Psychology. You will acquire and develop fundamental knowledge and skills in evidence-based psychotherapies and become familiar with the research methods in the field of clinical psychology.
The lecturers from this Master’s programme work in clinical practice and/or do state-of-the-art theoretical or applied research at Utrecht University. This integration of science and practice forms the basis of the teaching approach in this programme.
Clinical psychology is always interacting with other disciplines due to the context in which behavioural and health problems arise. Examples are medicine, biology, neurology, pharmacology, economics, sociology and social psychology. This will therefore be a considerable focus of attention. Some lectures will also be taught by (guest) lecturers from diverse disciplinary backgrounds. And finally, you will often work in a multi-disciplinary context during your internship as well.
The Clinical Psychology Master’s programme will mainly be taught in English. Some skills-oriented tutorials will be taught in English and Dutch. Our programme’s content and context have a strong international character and you will have plenty of opportunity for international orientation (thesis, internship, symposiums). On top of that, our student population is a mix of people from different countries and cultures. This provides a strong basis for the international and diversity-oriented character of our programme and our community.
The clinical Master’s degree offers Dutch-speaking students the opportunity to acquire the NIP’s basic certificate in psycho-diagnostics (BAPD). You can also apply for different postgraduate programmes (Healthcare psychology; in Dutch: GZ-psycholoog) or pursue a PhD position. For international students, formal accreditation needs to take place at an individual level by the national union of psychologists.
This programme will enable you to develop into an academic professional. You have broad knowledge of contemporary scientific theories and instruments as well as skills related to prevention, psychotherapeutic treatment and policy formation in the area of psychological aspects of health, illness and psychopathology. You are familiar with research methods in mental healthcare and can translate that knowledge to practice. You know what it’s like to work in a multi-disciplinary team.
Do you have a strong drawing ability and want to study concept art and develop a range of specialist skills?
This course focuses on games and animation but is also suitable for students interested in related areas such as film, comics and illustration. You will undertake project based course work supported by dedicated staff with a wealth of practical experience of both the commercial and academic worlds.Your teaching is supported by close links to industry. In previous years we have had a range of visiting lecturers – a senior concept artist from Double Negative, an art director from Ubisoft, the director of Atomhawk and representatives from Dreamworks and Microsoft. We have also had visits from a range of freelancers specialising in areas such as character design, storyboarding and matte painting. Industry experts are actively involved in setting you tasks and providing feedback
There are two routes you can choose from to gain an MA Concept Art for Games and Animation:
The postgraduate course covers specialist areas – character design, environment design and storytelling. You also focus on core drawing skills including regular life drawing classes. The course concludes with a final project – we support you to create a brief that enables you to specialise in your chosen area of interest.
You develop the cognitive and technical skills to equip you for enterprise, employment and further academic research. As a graduate, practising artist and designer or mid-career professional, you can engage in reflective creative practice at an advanced level.

Critical reflection is key to successful problem solving and essential to the creative process. To develop your own reflective practice at an advanced level, you test and assess your solutions against criteria that you develop in the light of your research.
How you are assessed
You are assessed through the production of a portfolio of creative work and a written report. Feedback is given during lectures and tutorials, and using online methods.

This MA in Animation will help you advance the skills you already have and develop the skills you aspire to gain.
There are many careers within the Animation industries, so we have designed a curriculum that allows you to mould your experience to suit your needs. We will encourage you to explore and develop in the creative areas you are most passionate about, allowing you to specialise in single production area such as (but not limited to): storyboarding, directing, concept art, character design, script writing etc.
We believe that no two creative people are the same, so we encourage you to follow your instincts and identify your personal creative potential.
Modules and Assessment
You will take part in both formative and summative assessments. Formative assessments provide feedback on work in progress; this is done during in weekly sessions, as well as in writing throughout the course.
You will use blogging to document your research, progress, learning, reflections and thinking. The blogs are a useful tool within the formative and summative assessment processes and will help you develop your professional voice.
Summative assessment is given as the final grade which a rigorous procedure often involving two or more members of staff, students work is examined in accordance to the Module Learning Outcomes and Assessment Criteria which is stipulated on the Assessment Brief (given at the beginning of each Semester).
The resources and equipment in Animation fully support the aspiration for high end productions to be created. You are encouraged to work to industry standard and aspire to award winning animations.

At the local, national and global level, we are witnessing an intense period of social transformation and fragmentation. Within this context, there is growing political and policy recognition of the need to better understand and thereby address social inequalities. The social sciences have an important role to play in mapping and understanding how inequalities arise and in tackling their causes and consequences. Innovative developments in the social sciences are offering new methodological, theoretical and empirical insights into entrenched and emerging inequalities of status, resource, outcome and opportunity. This has inspired us to create an interdisciplinary programme focusing on inequality in all its forms and its social, political and economic implications.
This Masters programme equips students with the necessary knowledge and skills to engage in and contribute towards work that tackles the realities and effects of social inequality. Capitalising on academic and applied expertise in the School of Sociology and Social Policy and the Leeds Inequalities Research Network, this programme harnesses leading analytical approaches combining qualitative, quantitative and data analytic methods (in close collaboration with the School of Geography).
In addition to offering an advanced understanding of rising material inequality, the programme encourages an intersectional approach to understanding socio-economic stratification and how this links with physical (dis) ability, race, ethnicity, nationality, gender, sexuality, class and age. It provides a stimulating intellectual environment and cutting edge methodological approaches to comparing and contrasting the formation and consequences of inequalities across a range of national and international contexts. Through an examination of geopolitical and socioeconomic shifts, such as urbanisation and globalisation, students are actively supported to critically interrogate the contemporary character and extent of social inequality.
Whilst undertaking this programme, students will join a vibrant and dynamic research led teaching and learning environment in the School of Sociology and Social Policy. You will benefit from the interdisciplinary expertise and extra-curricular activities hosted by the School and its research centres including those in Disability Studies, Ethnicity and Racism Studies, Interdisciplinary Gender Studies and Research into Families, the Life Course and Generations. You will also access events through the Leeds Social Sciences Institute (LSSI), which fosters cross-departmental collaboration, learning and impact, Students will also benefit from workshops on global inequalities by academic leaders from across campus and research seminars with external speakers; along with career development opportunities and events. The programme bridges disciplinary divides to provide a detailed understanding of the ways in which social inequality manifests across diverse communities and contexts at the national and international level. It offers insight into the character, causes and consequences of social inequality, as well as forms of resistance and policy responses. It has a strong and innovative methodological focus, including traditional qualitative and quantitative approaches to the social analysis of inequality, as well as new approaches to data visualisation and analytics from across the social sciences. The programme uses a range of teaching methods, including lectures, seminars and workshops, complemented by a range of co-curricular activities partly facilitated through the Leeds Inequalities Research Network.
The core modules of the programme introduce students to contemporary research on global inequalities of social difference and disadvantage, emphasizing a diversity of theoretical and research design strategies, including international evidence surrounding the shifting nature and extent of inequality. Students are able to tailor the programme according to their interests and needs by choosing from a specially selected range of optional modules, which address major social and economic inequalities across diverse social science subjects and substantive issues. As such, students can choose to develop in-depth specialist knowledge on a particular area and/or focus more generally on the social processes and arrangements that give rise to inequalities.

We use a range of teaching and learning methods including presentations, seminars, workshops, tutorials and lectures. However, independent study is crucial to this degree – it allows you to prepare for taught sessions, develop your research interests and build a range of skills. This is particularly the case for the dissertation/applied project module of this programme.
Supported through workshops and supervision, students develop their research dissertation or an applied project in partnership with external organisations. This offers students an exciting opportunity to gain experience of applying their knowledge and skills to policy and practice.
Your core modules will be assessed using essays. Optional modules may use other forms of assessment that reflect the diversity of the topics you can study, including presentations, book and literature reviews, research proposals and reports among others.
This programme prepares students for policy, research and applied careers across the private, public and third sectors. The interdisciplinary and dynamic nature of the programme equips students with the critical, analytical and methodological skills to deploy their specialist expertise in a clear, efficient and effective manner. You will develop transferable skills in research, analysis and communication, as well as in-depth knowledge that can be applied across a range of domains and contexts.
