In a world where managing and leading change has become critical, the Change Management Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert) will set you apart from colleagues with standard management qualifications.

Developing you as an accredited practitioner, this course will build your personal capacity to:

  • understand the academic theory behind organisational change
  • confidently take on a change leadership role
  • integrate academic knowledge and practice skills to engage in authoritative change management
  • make sense of the opportunities presented by cultural change.

This course is designed to fit around your personal and professional commitments. It is taught in three teaching blocks and you can choose to spread the course over a few years or complete it quickly in less than one year. Courses start in September, January and April.

Each three-day block is assessed by a work-based project which will contribute to your employer's business. This project will ensure that you are using best practice in your work.

All of the classroom teaching is workshop-based which promotes group discussion and the sharing of experience.

This course is delivered in three teaching blocks. Each block is taught over three consecutive days and is assessed by a work-based project.

Projects will not only ensure you are putting your skills to use, but are also designed to benefit your employer.

You will choose three of four available modules.

On the Change Management course, you will study the three modules that interest you the most.

Managing the Human Aspects of Change

Organisational cultures, which are a reflection of the attitudes, values and beliefs of members, can either aid or impede change. On this module, you will gain practical skills and tools both to analyse these cultures and influence cultural change. The module encourages engagement with the often neglected human aspects of managing change.

Political and Institutional Perspectives on Change Management

This module is recommended for managers aiming to interpret and make sense of change initiatives coming from higher levels within the organisation. It focuses on the potentially large and unpredictable effects that political and economic events may have 

The module presents multiple opportunities to explore complex cause and effect relationships systematically and creatively. It helps managers make appropriate judgements in the absence of complete data and to reach meaningful conclusions as to the likely impact of global changes on their organisation.

The Leadership of Change

This module is recommended for managers either involved in or anticipating leading change initiatives at all levels within organisations.

We now understand how successful change initiatives require a combination of effective leadership and effective management. The module will introduce you to leading change theories, models and concepts which inform these contemporary debates. It addresses how leaders communicate change, how they respond to and rethink resistance to change and how power and politics always informs leadership activities.

By the end of the module you will appreciate the challenges of leading change and the potential positive difference that the effective leadership of change can make.

Systems and Complexity Approaches to Change Management

This module is recommended for managers grappling with the unpredictable and repercussive effects of managing change under challenging circumstances.

Change initiatives are often couched in project methodology terms, yet controlled project outcomes may remain elusive. The module examines action, effect, feedback and impact on initial conditions from a systems perspective. This contributes to an understanding of how and why localised change management projects may often diverge from planned expectations. The module explores the explanatory capabilities of such academic approaches and their potential value to practitioners.

Careers and employability

On completion of this course you will have a sound understanding of change management, with knowledge and skills widely sought after by private, public and not-for-profit organisations.

Westminster Business School is a Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) approved centre. The course has been accredited by the CIPD as meeting the 'knowledge criteria' for professional membership. The online MSc in Carbon Management is a ground-breaking development of the award-winning campus-based MSc in Carbon Management programme at the University of Edinburgh.

Building on the proven success and expert content of the established residential programme, this new online programme provides high-level knowledge, skills and training in the business, economics and science of carbon management.

The programme is designed for graduates who want an advanced academic qualification in tackling climate change management by business, industry, NGOs and government.

The interdisciplinary nature of the programme provides a detailed understanding of climate science and economics, and a broad and integrated understanding of carbon management. Students can devise study programmes suited to their own personal interests and career goals through their choice of individual research projects.

Online learning

The online delivery allows study to be balanced alongside full-time employment and family commitments. A blend of interactive content, videos, virtual case studies and online discussions enables students to explore the science and business responses to climate change.

Programme structure

The MSc is completed on a part-time basis over a period of 36 months, starting in September each year. There is also a 24 month accelerated learning option.

The MSc comprises seven core courses and a dissertation, and is organised into three sections:

  1. Postgraduate Certificate in Climate Change Management (60 credits, 3 courses)
  2. Postgraduate Certificate in Carbon Innovation (60 credits, 3 courses)
  3. Applied Carbon Methods (60 credits, 1 course and dissertation)

The first two sections can be taken as standalone qualifications. If both are successfully completed then the student will be eligible for a Postgraduate Diploma in Carbon Management.

In order to achieve the full MSc in Carbon Management, the first two Certificates must be successfully completed before the third can be taken. The MSc in Carbon Management is a landmark collaboration between the world-renowned Schools of Geosciences, Economics and the Business School at the University of Edinburgh. It provides students with expertise, knowledge and skills in the business, economics and science of carbon management.

MSc Carbon Management was recently ranked in the top 15 World’s Best Masters in Sustainable Development and Environmental Management (Eduniversal Masters Ranking 2013-14).

Carbon management is now at the heart of tackling climate change and has rapidly become a central part of the global business environment. Edinburgh in particular has emerged as one of the most important global centres in this new discipline.

This innovative programme, taught by world-leading experts in key fields of climate change and carbon management, is for graduates who want an advanced academic qualification to launch careers in carbon and climate change management in business or government.

Course content

The rationale for the course is based on the recognition that the effectiveness of all IT Services is a vital aspect to the prosperity of any organisation. The course embraces best practice from leading service providers, and by continual reassessment, ensures all material is relevant to today’s computing and management expectations.

The course encompasses IT Service Management through a series of progressive units developing the student’s knowledge from fundamental concepts, through to units addressing IS strategy. Subjects covered include: management information, quality management, application development, infrastructure, service support and delivery, continuity planning, people and operational issues of implementing IT Service Management Best Practice. The course addresses current standards for IT Service Management, such as ISO20000 and ITIL®.

Core learning will be delivered electronically and you will be encouraged to engage with your fellow students and tutors online. Our accredited Management MSc programme will prepare you for a wide range of careers in management. The Management (Public Services) MSc focuses on developing your understanding of the unique management challenges and political drivers within public services and not-for-profit organisations.

Public services often represent the largest body of employers. Together with non-profit organisations, they employ more than 20% of the workforce in many countries, and that figure is growing every year.

On this course, case studies, live client projects, company visits and the option of paid work experience help prepare you for management by putting the latest academic thinking and business strategies into practice. You will learn about the major functions of management and their integration.

All students on our Management MSc programme complete the same core modules covering the major functions of management until the end of term two, at which point you will be able to tailor the course to your individual strengths and career aspirations through option modules, the option of an additional semester to study abroad, a specialism in one of five areas or a continuation of a more generalist route with our Management MSc

Course structure

An innovative alternative to a MBA, this one-year, full-time course is designed for graduates of any subject with or without work experience. Case studies, live client projects, company visits and the option of paid work experience help prepare you for management by putting the latest academic thinking and business strategies into practice.

Teaching takes place over three terms, from late September to early June, with breaks after assessments in mid-December to early January and late March to mid-April.

Class attendance averages 14 to 18 hours a week, plus time for group work and independent study, with variations as you progress through the course. There are some special intensive workshops on topics such as leadership, management and research, and a one-week tutor-led international study visit to companies in another European country.

Your final project will take place over the summer after teaching finishes. Your optional work-experience based final project may continue for up to one-year past the end of teaching.

International management and leadership are at the heart of this course. You will work in small, multinational teams to develop international capabilities and build your global network.

Your tutor-led study visit to a European partner organisation will give you an international perspective to your study. Previous students have visited and heard from leaders at Xerox, Mercedes Benz, Carrefour and the European Parliament.

Careers and employability

With an emphasis on understanding the political context in which public services operate, the Management (Public Services) MSc will prepare you for careers in management consultancy, change management and some areas of functional management, for example in high-tech companies as well as the public sector.

The course will also prove valuable if you are interested in starting your own business or pursuing a career as a business negotiator, commercial interpreter, lecturer or researcher.

Students study an interesting range of modules focusing on international corporate HRM, International personnel management and organisational analysis and development. This Master's specifically enables you to build a body of practical skills and theoretical knowledge around the management of organisations within different international contexts, allowing you to acquire a coherent, specialised body of relevant knowledge.

All students on our full-time business Masters courses can apply to undertake the PG/MBA Internship Programme Reflective Practitioner Module. This is an 8 week unpaid accredited internship, which can be taken in addition to option modules and will help students to gain invaluable work experience. The internships, which are with London-based organisations, take place during the summer period. To apply, students must submit a completed application form and a copy of their updated CV to the Business Experience Team; the team then shortlist from the applications and conduct group meetings with the applicants.

Ultimately it is up to our internship employers to decide whether they would like to interview the candidate(s) and offer him/her an internship. We have received very positive feedback from both postgraduate students and employers and expect that the internship programme will continue to remain popular amongst our students.

Accreditation

Westminster Business School will pay your CIPD joining fee and your membership fees for the first period of your studies. You will also be provided with text books which contain the essential reading for the core modules.

MSc Management and Information Systems: Change and Development aims to train 'hybrid managers' capable of understanding both the job of management in its organisational setting, and the role, management and jargon of information, information systems and information technology.

The course intends to help close the gap of knowledge, skills, culture and language that exists between functional managers and information systems professionals - a gap that results in the majority of information systems, including e-government, e-commerce, and e-development systems, under-performing or becoming failures.

You'll therefore graduate in a strong position to lead the successful development and implementation of new information systems in a wide range of organisations. By the course's end, you will have been provided with:

  • conceptual frameworks to understand the role of management of information, of information technology and of information systems in organisations
  • new knowledge and skills to help in the effective planning, development implementation and management of information systems
  • new knowledge and skills to help in the effective management and change of organisations.

Special features

An overseas field visit is an integral part of the programme. The cost of the visit is included in the programme fee. In addition, participants may undertake research visits to organisations applying information systems in practice in the UK. Field courses may be scheduled at any point during the twelve-month period of the degree programme and this may include during University vacations. Successful applicants are expected to be available to attend.

Countries to be visited may change their immigration and visa regulations at short notice. The Global Development Institute (GDI) cannot guarantee that where visas are required for the field course, they will be granted. GDI will ensure that, in the unlikely event this occurs, affected students are not academically disadvantaged.

Teaching and learning

Part-time students complete the full-time programme over 24 months.  There are NO evening or weekend course units available on the part-time programme, therefore if you are considering taking a programme on a part-time basis, you should discuss the requirements with the Programme Director first and seek approval from your employer to have the relevant time off. Timetabling information is normally available from late August from the Programme Administrator and you will have the opportunity to discuss course unit choices during induction week with the Programme Director.

Coursework and assessment

The taught elements of the programme, carrying 120 credits overall is continuously assessed by a variety of methods (project based reports, essays), involving largely individual submissions, but also elements of group work.

Participants must also complete a 12,000-15,000 word dissertation on a topic of their choice approved by the Programme Directors. Students are encouraged to base their dissertations on topics of direct professional concern to themselves.
