Changing human behaviour is at the heart of solving global problems central to wellbeing, social cohesion and environmental sustainability. For example, preventing obesity, pollution and waste of resources require change at individual, organisational and population levels. This cross-disciplinary programme uniquely equips students to work in this emerging and exciting field.

Degree information

This cross-disciplinary Master's programme will:
-Equip students with the ability to critically appraise theories, methods and evidence for understanding behaviour and behaviour change in a range of contexts.
-Train students in the design, implementation and evaluation of behaviour change interventions.
-Enable students to support the translation of evidence into practice across disciplines and sectors.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of four core modules (75 credits), three optional modules (45 credits) and a dissertation (60 credits). A Postgraduate Diploma, four core modules (75 credits), three optional modules (45 credits) is also offered. A Postgraduate Certificate, three core modules (60 credits) is also offered.

Dissertation/research project
MSc students undertake an independent research project, culminating in a dissertation of 8,000-10,000 words. Projects will also be presented at a mini-conference.

Teaching and learning
The programme is delivered through lectures, seminars, small-group and project work and independent study. All tutors are highly experienced, internationally recognised researchers and/or practitioners in behaviour change from a range of disciplines, including: health, transport, built environment, digital technology, policy and ethics. Assessment is through coursework, unseen examinations and research projects. Although not formally offered, we can support students to find and complete a work experience placement as part of their programme.

Careers

Market research has shown there is a large demand for behaviour change expertise across the private, public and voluntary sectors and in roles relating to policy, practice and research.

On graduation we anticipate students will find work as health professionals, policy officers, researchers and research managers, IT developers and user experience designers, human resource managers, management consultants, urban and transport planners. The range of optional modules available on this programme creates a unique opportunity for students to tailor their degree to their specific interests and career aspirations.

Graduates will be equipped with a broad set of skills that can be applied to many different careers.

Students will have acquired significant knowledge about behaviour change theories and techniques, skills in intervention design, implementation and evaluation and will have an advanced understanding and appreciation for effective inter-disciplinary working.

Students will also have knowledge of a broad range of research methodologies and MSc students will have had the opportunity to apply these and their acquired knowledge to an original piece of research.

If you’re a professional wishing to underpin your work with theory and practical ways forward, or a graduate wishing to specialise in behaviour change or add social science to your skill set, this course is for you.

Our MSc Behaviour Change is the first masters course of its kind. The course will provide you with psychological theories and models so that you can develop a greater understanding of human behaviour and behaviour change. You’ll acquire the knowledge and transferable skills required to critically evaluate and design interventions that provide opportunities for people to change in a variety of practical contexts.

You’ll be taught by an enthusiastic and experienced team of research-active psychologists and ergonomists. We share a passion for promoting applied evidence-based science relevant to the understanding and promotion of behaviour change.

We offer three pathways to a masters award in Behaviour Change:
MSc Behaviour Change (Health and Wellbeing)
MSc Behaviour Change (Occupational Health and Safety)
MSc Behaviour Change (Ergonomics and Human Factors)

You’ll study one module per term (three modules per year). You can do either the full MSc in your chosen pathway over three years, or take a step off award after one year (Postgraduate Certificate) or after two years (Postgraduate Diploma in your chosen pathway).
Although the three pathways share several modules, they are distinctive and tailored to the specific needs of students on each specific pathway. For all module coursework, you’re encouraged to focus on specific contexts that matter to you and your practical experience. What is Applied Behaviour Analysis?

Behaviour Analysis is the science of behaviour. This means that we are interested in everything a person does, including what we feel (emotional behaviour) and think (cognitive behaviour). When this science is applied to enhance or develop socially relevant behaviours we call it Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA). There are many applications, for example, to enhance or teach communication and language skills, social skills, reading and other academic skills, life skills, business or classroom management, and many more. In other words, ABA is utilised to help many people in many situations.
Due to the effectiveness of the intervention methods and teaching techniques based on ABA, the demand for behaviour analytic services has increased worldwide, not only for individuals with autism and other special educational needs, but also for application in the mainstream inclusive classroom and many other educational, clinical, or general life contexts.

BACB Recognition

Professionals who are Board Certified Behaviour Analysts (BCBA) have the skills and knowledge to develop, implement and evaluate quality interventions that help to produce positive behavioural changes in a range of settings. The six modules of the MSc ABA cover the required academic curriculum. The programme presently does not include BACB practice requirements, but we have many national and international affiliate organisations who welcome our students and offer placements (some are paid, some unpaid) and supervision (in person or online). Supervised practice requirements can be undertaken while you are studying on the MSc ABA.

Aims

On successful completion of this programme students will be able to:
o demonstrate knowledge and understanding of any educational research, policy, practice and theory covered in the programme;

o show evidence of reflection on their professional practice;
o demonstrate knowledge of a range of educational research methods;
o choose fit-for-purpose methods for a research project within the context of their own professional role;
o demonstrate engagement in the processes of research planning, data collection and analysis (as appropriate), and research reporting.

Programme Structure and Modules

Students may enrol on a full-time (1 year) or part-time (3 years) basis.
In order to be awarded the MSc ABA, students must successfully complete six taught modules (120 credits) and a dissertation (60 credits) as well as audit the Research Methods in Education online module. An exit qualification (PG Diploma ABA) is available. Students may exit with a Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Behaviour Analysis by successfully completing 120 credits from taught pathway modules.
The programme content is delivered online with multiple focused weekly virtual interactions that include peer- and tutor feedback. This structure allows for acquisition of knowledge, information sharing, development of critical thinking skills, and giving and receiving immediate feedback. An intensive on-campus 5-hour consolidation workshop takes place once during each module to give students the opportunity to meet each other and course tutors face-to-face.

The majority of students are already in relevant jobs and the job market is healthy for BCBAs at present. Professionals who are certified BCBAs have the skills and knowledge to develop, implement and evaluate quality interventions that help to produce positive behavioural changes in a range of settings. Typically, behaviour analysts work in the ‘helping’ professions (e.g. teachers, speech/language therapists, occupational therapists, psychologists). Increasingly, jobs advertised for behaviour managers or specialists require BCBA status.
There is an increasing demand for BCBAs in Europe and worldwide, especially in North America. Teachers as well as allied health professionals should find this degree beneficial in their workplace.

2016 Postgraduate Tizard programmes will close to applicants at 23:59 hrs on Thursday 21 April 2016. Applications received after this time will be held for consideration for 2017 entry. The final tranche of interviews for 2016 will be held during the week of 23 May 2016. Applicants unable to make themselves available this week (in person or via skype or telephone) will be considered for 2017 entry.

It provides you with a detailed knowledge of intellectual and developmental disabilities and experience of practice or conducting research in this field. The programme is for both recent graduates and experienced practitioners. Our postgraduate courses improve employability prospects for both those with established careers and new entrants to the field. Many of our students already work with people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in professional, management or supporting capacities. Our programmes support their continuing professional development and enhance their opportunities for career advancement. Other students, who are at the beginning of their careers, move on to a range of professional roles in health and social care including working as psychologists in learning disability or behavioural specialists in community learning disability teams; service management of development roles; clinical psychology training or a PhD.

Our Applied Behaviour Analysis programme includes a course sequence approved by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board. Its completion, therefore, meets two of the requirements for certification as a Behaviour Analyst. Successful students will need to obtain appropriate supervised experience and pass the BACB exam. Many of our ABA students hope to take this career path, applying their skills either in work with children or adults with autism (ie early intervention programmes or in schools using an ABA approach) or with children/adults with learning disabilities whose behaviour is described as challenging. Every week we are asked to notify our students of opportunities in these fields. Module structure
- Challenging Behaviour
This module explores challenging behaviour from a variety of perspectives and provides you with an overview of individual and contextual factors which may influence children and young people's behaviour. During seminar workshops you will discuss theoretical perspectives in relation to problematising children and young people's social, emotional and mental health. Particular attention will be paid to 'causes' of challenging behaviour, individual and whole school approaches to managing behaviour and the importance of recognising pupil voice and increasing pupil participation. You will be encouraged to reflect on, and critique, alternative educational provisions.

- Action Research (double module)
You will determine the content of the sessions by focusing on the inquiries selected by both yourself and others, adopting a 'learning set' approach. Group seminars and workshops will provide a structured introduction to action research followed by the development of small working groups to support the stages of individual projects and provide peer group support. Your tutor will signpost you to relevant academic theory and research and support material from the MA in Education online resources.

Teaching and learning

The first module, 'Challenging Behaviour', requires regular evening attendance (seven evening sessions) in the Autumn and this is followed by a double action research module in which you will complete a research project in your own school based on work with children / young people with behaviour difficulties.

This research project will be supported by six workshops between January and June, and individual tutorial support based around your particular project.

The course provides students with a carefully planned sequence of learning opportunities to facilitate individual development through six assessments.

This sequence includes academic essays focused on understanding challenging behaviour, assessments of individual student behaviour identified as problematic, the development and implementation of plans to address this, reflection on institutional behaviour policy and a piece of small-scale research in schools/colleges.

• Assessment one, Unit 1, requires reflection on understandings of behavioural problems, taking individual students’ contexts into account. The second and third involve assessing a learner whose behaviour is seen as challenging, and designing, developing, implementing and evaluating a plan designed to address this behaviour.

• Assessments in Unit 2 relate to analysis and reflection on current school/college policy on behaviour, and the design, development, implementation and critical evaluation of a small-scale research project focused on effecting change in the institution that will have a positive impact on student behaviour.

Careers

Typically graduates of this course either continue working in their own institutions or else are promoted to positions of greater responsibility.

Successful completion results in 60 Masters’ level credits that may be used towards an MA Education.

The Master’s Programme in Human Nutrition and Food Behaviour focuses on human nutrition and related behaviour and consumption from the perspectives of public health nutrition, nutrition physiology and the social sciences. The programme is built around human nutrition, food behaviour and consumership, as well as related research methods.

Selection of the Major

Programme Structure

With a scope of 120 credits (ECTS), the Master’s programme can be completed in two academic years. The degree comprises:

The broad aim of the MSc Applied Behaviour Analysis is to give students the opportunity to develop their theoretical and conceptual knowledge in behaviour analysis, develop skills in behavioural assessment, and acquire the ability to work in partnership with clients where they plan and implement programmes that are aimed at establishing, strengthening and/or weakening targeted behaviours.

- Purpose -

The programme aims to provide a foundation that contributes to the preparation of candidates interested in applying for the internationally recognised examination leading to Board Certification in Behaviour Analysis (BCBA). It will normally be completed over two calendar years to allow time for students to obtain relevant work experience, which is a requirement for certification in Behaviour Analysis.

Many of the world’s non-human primates (NHPs) face extinction due to habitat destruction, fragmentation, overexploitation, disease and/or increased competition over resources with their human relatives. A combination of ecological, spatial, behavioural, and social methodologies and perspectives provides promising avenues to inform and achieve effective conservation management and to help combat these challenges. This pathway highlights the benefits of incorporating an understanding of local human communities’ experiences and a sound knowledge of primate behavioural and landscape ecology to foster successful conservation of non-human primates. It will familiarise you with a diverse set of practical and theoretical tools to pursue successfully a future role in primate conservation.

The MSc offers collaborations with NGOs around the world, from the neotropics to Africa and Southeast Asia, as well as zoological institutions across Europe (eg, Howletts and Port Lympne Animal Parks, Kent) and African primate sanctuaries.

Course structure

The MSc consists of six months of coursework and five months of research. The optional modules allow you the flexibility to devise a pathway that suits your specific interests, with an appropriate balance between natural and social sciences.

Assessment

Assessment is carried out primarily through coursework with written examinations for some modules. The research dissertation is written up in the format of a paper for publication.

The School has a very good record for postgraduate employment and academic continuation. DICE programmes combine academic theory with practical field experience to develop graduates who are highly employable within government, NGOs and the private sector.
