Changing human behaviour is at the heart of solving global problems central to wellbeing, social cohesion and environmental sustainability. Government and public bodies, charities and companies routinely seek to integrate behaviour change within their policies and practices. This cross-disciplinary programme will train a new generation to work in this emerging field.

About this degree

This cross-disciplinary MSc programme will:

  • equip students with the ability to critically appraise theories, methods and evidence for understanding behaviour and behaviour change in a range of contexts.
  • train students in the design, implementation and evaluation of behaviour change interventions.
  • enable students to support the translation of evidence into practice across disciplines and sectors.

MSc students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The MSc programme consists of four core modules (75 credits), three elective modules (45 credits) and a research-based dissertation (60 credits).

A Postgraduate Diploma, which consists of four core modules (75 credits) and three electives (45 credits), is also offered.

A Postgraduate Certificate, which consists of three core modules (60 credits), is also available.

Dissertation/research project

MSc students undertake an independent research project, culminating in a dissertation of 8,000-10,000 words. Projects will also be presented at a mini-conference. 

Teaching and learning

The programme is delivered through lectures, seminars, small-group and project work and independent study. All tutors are highly experienced, internationally recognised researchers and/or practitioners in behaviour change from a range of disciplines, including: health, transport, built environment, digital technology, policy and ethics. Assessment is through coursework, unseen examinations and research projects. Although not formally offered, we can support students to find and complete a work experience placement as part of their programme.

Students graduating from this programme will be equipped with a broad set of skills that can be applied to many different careers. Market research has shown there is a large demand for behaviour change expertise across the private, public and voluntary sectors and in roles relating to policy, practice and research. 

Graduate careers benefiting from this degree include policy officers, researchers and research managers, IT developers and user experience designers, human resource managers, health consultants, urban and transport planners. The range of modules available creates a unique opportunity for students to tailor their degree to their specific interests and career aspirations.

If you’re a professional wishing to underpin your work with theory and practical ways forward, or a graduate wishing to specialise in behaviour change or add social science to your skill set, this course is for you.

Our MSc Behaviour Change is the first masters course of its kind. The course will provide you with psychological theories and models so that you can develop a greater understanding of human behaviour and behaviour change. You’ll acquire the knowledge and transferable skills required to critically evaluate and design interventions that provide opportunities for people to change in a variety of practical contexts.

You’ll be taught by an enthusiastic and experienced team of research-active psychologists and ergonomists. We share a passion for promoting applied evidence-based science relevant to the understanding and promotion of behaviour change.

We offer three pathways to a masters award in Behaviour Change:
MSc Behaviour Change (Health and Wellbeing)

You’ll study one module per term (three modules per year). You can do either the full MSc in your chosen pathway over three years, or take a step off award after one year (Postgraduate Certificate) or after two years (Postgraduate Diploma in your chosen pathway).
Although the three pathways share several modules, they are distinctive and tailored to the specific needs of students on each specific pathway.   • A sound understanding of the underlying concepts and principles associated with Behaviour Analysis, and of the applications of these concepts and principles
  • A knowledge of the research skills required for Behaviour Analysis, including the ability to read, interpret and appraise published behavioural research critically, and the ability to conduct fundamental and, where appropriate, applied research in Behaviour Analysis
  • An understanding of functional analyses of problem behaviour and of how to develop an appropriate programme for behaviour change in their area of speciality

The Behaviour Analysis courses in this programme provide a course sequence approved by the Behavior Analysis Certification Board ®, Inc. Career opportunities

Depending on your specialty, you may work in a range of settings (including research institutions, private practice, schools, special education settings, universities, health services, business and industry, governmental agencies and zoos), and with a range of populations (including families, people with psychological problems, children with challenging behaviours, individuals with special needs, teachers, people and their pets, agricultural species and any others seeking positive behaviour change).

Students who specialised in the application of Behaviour Analysis to human behaviour are working in the community, in mental health, and in educational settings and with a wide range of individuals.

However, it doesn’t matter what type of psychology you choose to practice, or whether you end up in a field orientated to people or animals. What is important is that you gain an understanding of how and why organisms behave (i.e., what maintains and/or influences behaviour) whether it be private or public.

Industry Experience

Many students intending careers involving application of behaviour analysis (for example, those who intend to work with families, children or with people with an intellectual disability) gain practical experience alongside their graduate studies.

This can be voluntary work or paid work as a support worker. In addition, sometimes experience can be gained though working for parents or trusts who employ students specialising in applied behaviour analysis to work with their children, helping to implement programmes for them.

The MAppPsy(BA) programme includes training in the skills required to work practically applying behaviour analytic principles to behaviour change.

Behaviour analysis has been recognised as the basis for medically necessary intervention and educational provision for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders. With the growing prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorders (now estimated to be 1:68) behaviour analysis has experienced a significant rise in popularity.

There are over 13,000 Board Certified Behaviour Analysts (BCBAs) worldwide and this number is predicted to rise given that professional approval is seen as the key to delivering high quality services to individuals, families, in schools and in related settings. Furthermore, behaviour analysis is increasingly being applied to general education, special education and organisational leadership settings.

This programme is a highly interactive blended learning programme (mostly online with some face to face workshops) providing professionals from a wide range of backgrounds with scientifically validated expertise that is applicable to mainstream and special needs education, inclusion, curriculum, learning, and pedagogy. It should be of interest to professionals wishing to become Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBA®), to those in the ‘helping’ professions (e.g. teachers, speech/language therapists, occupational therapists, psychologists) and students preparing for PhD studies.

Module structure
- Challenging Behaviour
This module explores challenging behaviour from a variety of perspectives and provides you with an overview of individual and contextual factors which may influence children and young people's behaviour. During seminar workshops you will discuss theoretical perspectives in relation to problematising children and young people's social, emotional and mental health. Particular attention will be paid to 'causes' of challenging behaviour, individual and whole school approaches to managing behaviour and the importance of recognising pupil voice and increasing pupil participation. You will be encouraged to reflect on, and critique, alternative educational provisions.

- Action Research (double module)
You will determine the content of the sessions by focusing on the inquiries selected by both yourself and others, adopting a 'learning set' approach. Group seminars and workshops will provide a structured introduction to action research followed by the development of small working groups to support the stages of individual projects and provide peer group support. Your tutor will signpost you to relevant academic theory and research and support material from the MA in Education online resources.

Teaching and learning

The first module, 'Challenging Behaviour', requires regular evening attendance (seven evening sessions) in the Autumn and this is followed by a double action research module in which you will complete a research project in your own school based on work with children / young people with behaviour difficulties.

This research project will be supported by six workshops between January and June, and individual tutorial support based around your particular project.

The course provides students with a carefully planned sequence of learning opportunities to facilitate individual development through six assessments.

This sequence includes academic essays focused on understanding challenging behaviour, assessments of individual student behaviour identified as problematic, the development and implementation of plans to address this, reflection on institutional behaviour policy and a piece of small-scale research in schools/colleges.

• Assessment one, Unit 1, requires reflection on understandings of behavioural problems, taking individual students’ contexts into account. The second and third involve assessing a learner whose behaviour is seen as challenging, and designing, developing, implementing and evaluating a plan designed to address this behaviour.

• Assessments in Unit 2 relate to analysis and reflection on current school/college policy on behaviour, and the design, development, implementation and critical evaluation of a small-scale research project focused on effecting change in the institution that will have a positive impact on student behaviour.

Careers

Typically graduates of this course either continue working in their own institutions or else are promoted to positions of greater responsibility.

Successful completion results in 60 Masters’ level credits that may be used towards an MA Education.

Organisational Behaviour involves the study of individuals and groups within organisational and social contexts, and the study of internal processes and practices as they affect those individuals or groups. This MSc enables you to delve deeply into the two inter-related disciplines of psychology and economics, in order to better explore, understand and predict the decisions people make.

Combining economic modelling with what psychology can tell us about individual behaviour and emotions you’ll learn to create highly accurate models for predicting human behaviour, which can then be used to empower behaviour change at both a micro and macro level.

This course is ideal if you are seeking to work in any area where understanding human decision-making is critical. This ranges from industry and healthcare, to developing new technologies or policies, and beyond.

The course has been designed from a truly interdisciplinary perspective, bringing together specialist teaching and expertise from both the Department of Psychology and Department of Economics.

You’ll work with expert, research-active, staff who’ll collaborate to deliver the content, give you exposure to the latest issues and trends, and links with employers, and ensure you gain the interdisciplinary insights that will set you apart in the jobs market.

At its core, the MSc in Primate Conservation and Behaviour provides a forum for understanding not only the behaviour of NHPs (non-human primates), but also the current issues and hot topics in NHPs conservation and management.

Many of the world’s non-human primates (NHPs) face extinction due to habitat destruction, fragmentation, overexploitation, disease and/or increased competition over resources with their human relatives. In spite of the impressive behavioural flexibility and capacity for adaptation of numerous NHP species, global trends are alarming.

This pathway promotes a multidisciplinary approach and understanding of primate conservation issues. A combination of ecological, spatial, behavioural, and social methodologies and perspectives provides promising avenues to inform and achieve effective conservation management and to help combat these challenges. This pathway highlights the benefits of incorporating an understanding of local human communities’ experiences and a sound knowledge of primate behavioural and landscape ecology to foster successful conservation of non-human primates. It will familiarise you with a diverse set of practical and theoretical tools to pursue successfully a future role in primate conservation.

The MSc offers collaborations with NGOs around the world, from the neotropics to Africa and Southeast Asia, as well as zoological institutions across Europe (eg, Howletts and Port Lympne Animal Parks, Kent) and African primate sanctuaries.

Assessment

Assessment is carried out primarily through coursework with written examinations for some modules. The research dissertation is written up in the format of a paper for publication.

Analysing and reflecting on sustainability transformations in cities and regions with regard to topics such as waste, energy, water, transportation and climate change.

Cities around the world are dealing with environmental issues: air pollution, urban heat islands, stormwater flooding, the growing accumulation of solid waste. What can be done to keep citizens safe from environmental hazards and natural disasters? What is needed to ensure a pleasant living environment? And how can residents, commuters and businesses be stimulated – or if necessary, forced with legislation or financial sanctions – to do their bit? With the problems increasing, rather than diminishing, there’s a growing demand for professionals with an expertise in the development of sustainable cities.

The Master’s specialisation in Local Environmental Change and Sustainable Cities focuses on the local level of sustainability transformations. You’ll be introduced to the latest scientific insights, which will be illustrated with numerous examples of how cities and regions all over the world tackle these problems.

Waste, energy, water, transportation

A broad scope of environmental issues will be addressed, as well as existing measures and instruments. Stormwater management, forms of renewable energy and green roofs are just a small sample of what you can expect to encounter. You’ll also, for example, discover that waste management goes far beyond recycling schemes and how cradle-to-grave products are making way for cradle-to-cradle. In addition, we’ll be dealing with citizens’ initiatives in renewable energy as well as new focus areas, like the possible environmental advantages of community food systems.

This Master’s specialisation will teach you to become the bridge between science and society. What do the latest results in environmental research actually mean and how can that knowledge be converted into concrete plans and policies that will bring about the change needed? Robust scientific evidence is a critical tool for conservation scientists responding to the challenges of mitigating biodiversity loss. This course focuses on developing investigative research skills while addressing applied questions in wildlife behaviour and conservation.

What will I learn?

The individual research project is undertaken throughout the year and is the primary focus of this course.

How will I be taught?

Teaching is delivered through lecturers, laboratory practicals, field trips and seminars supplemented by online materials such as discussion boards and analytical exercises.

You will contribute to research seminars, a journal club and tutorials.

Modules consist of 32 hours of taught activities and 168 hours of self study.

How will I be assessed?

Taught modules are assessed through coursework assignments.

The dissertation projects consists of at least 1,400 hours' study to produce a paper suitable for peer review publication.

Research driven

International orientation

The courses in this Master's programme are rooted in international scientific literature and are focused on the internatonal context. You can do your internship and/or thesis abroad or in (internatonal) organisations in the Netherlands, such as Trendsactive, Coca Cola, Hays, Sogeti (in Dutch), Philips and Nutrica. 

As our student, you are primarily responsible for finding your own internship organisation. The department of Social, Health and Organisational Psychology has a database of internship organisations and has an internatonal network you can use.
