In a world where managing and leading change has become critical, the Change Management Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert) will set you apart from colleagues with standard management qualifications.

Developing you as an accredited practitioner, this course will build your personal capacity to:
- understand the academic theory behind organisational change
- confidently take on a change leadership role
- integrate academic knowledge and practice skills to engage in authoritative change management
- make sense of the opportunities presented by cultural change.

This course is designed to fit around your personal and professional commitments. It is taught in three teaching blocks and you can choose to spread the course over a few years or complete it quickly in less than one year. Courses start in September, January and April.

Each three-day block is assessed by a work-based project which will contribute to your employer's business. This project will ensure that you are using best practice in your work.

Your employer will benefit from your ability to maximise organisational success during periods of change, as well as your capacity to effectively communicate the changes to staff.

All of the classroom teaching is workshop-based which promotes group discussion and the sharing of experience.

Course Content:

The course is delivered in three teaching blocks. Each block is taught over three consecutive days and is assessed by a work-based project.

You may choose three from the following four modules:

- Managing the Human Aspects of Change
This module is recommended for managers engaging with the challenges arising out of managing people during times of significant change. The module encourages engagement with the often neglected human aspects of managing change, informed by understanding the involvement of individuals and groups within all successful changes.

Organisational cultures, which are a reflection of the attitudes, values and beliefs of organisational members, can either aid or impede change. Participants will gain practical skills and tools both to analyse these cultures and influence cultural change. Upon completion of this module you will have a much better understanding of the complexities of managing the human aspects of change.

- Political and Institutional Perspectives on Change Management
This module is recommended for managers aiming to interpret and make sense of change initiatives coming from higher levels within the organisation. It focuses on the potentially large and unpredictable effects that political and economic events may have on individual organisations.

The module presents multiple opportunities to explore complex cause and effect relationships systematically and creatively. It helps managers make appropriate judgements in the absence of complete data and to reach meaningful conclusions as to the likely impact of global changes on their organisation.

- The Leadership of Change
This module is recommended for managers either involved in or anticipating leading change initiatives at all levels within organisations.

We now understand how successful change initiatives require a combination of effective leadership and effective management. The module will introduce you to leading change theories, models and concepts which inform these contemporary debates. It addresses how leaders communicate change, how they respond to and rethink resistance to change and how power and politics always informs leadership activities. By the end of the module you will appreciate the challenges of leading change and the potential positive difference that the effective leadership of change can make.

- Systems and Complexity Approaches to Change Management
This module is recommended for managers grappling with the unpredictable and repercussive effects of managing change under challenging circumstances.

Change initiatives are often couched in project methodology terms, yet controlled project outcomes may remain elusive. The module examines action, effect, feedback and impact on initial conditions from a systems perspective. This contributes to an understanding of how and why localised change management projects may often diverge from planned expectations. The module explores the explanatory capabilities of such academic approaches and their potential value to practitioners.

Fieldwork

The Stackpole residential field course introduces Environmental Dynamics and Climatic Change programme students taking the “Principles of Environmental Dynamics” to some of the major themes of the module: environmental systems, sea-level change and human impact on the environment, in a congenial setting in Pembrokeshire. The environmental issues facing the Stackpole Estate are discussed and placed into a historical perspective through lectures and the analysis of long term environmental records.

Research

The Department of Geography aima to be one of the foremost international centres for research in human and physical geography, and to provide our students with excellent teaching and superb facilities in a friendly atmosphere.

The results of the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014 show that Geography at Swansea University is ranked joint 9th in the UK for research impact and 11th in the UK for research environment.

We have specialist laboratory suites for: stable-isotope ratio analysis; tree ring analysis; extraction and identification of organic compounds; pollen extraction and analysis; rainfall simulation; tephra analysis; soil and sediment characterisation.

In addition, we have recently spent £1.8million on state-of-the-art teaching spaces, including IT facilities, laboratories and flexible teaching spaces.

Student profiles

I originally came to Swansea University to study for a BSc in Geography. Although this course covered a wide range of both human and physical topics that were all very interesting and provided a broad spectrum of skills from GIS and remote sensing to environmental modelling, my main interest was in the physical aspects. I graduated in 2007 with a 1st Class BSc (Hons) in Geography and wanted to continue my studies into the field of climate change. I decided that the MSc in Environmental Dynamics and Climate Change would be an appropriate route to take in order to pursue this field. The MSc in Environmental Dynamics and Climate Change focused on many characteristics of the global environment, like impacts on ecosystems, and how the varying processes associated with climate change can be monitored, measured and modelled. This choice of topics was complimented by the fact that the modules were run by lecturers working at the cutting-edge of global environmental change. The culmination of what I learned over the course of the year was put into practice with the dissertation, which allowed me to focus on an area of particular interest. The group of friends that I had on the course were brilliant and I will take away a lot of fond memories of our time together at Swansea. Now, after finishing the MSc in Environmental Dynamics and Climate Change I have a job working for the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton".

Many change practitioners have realized that change and innovation is predominantly a socio-technological phenomenon and that the standard approaches don't work back in their organisations.

This two-year part-time program has been designed by experienced practitioners to meet the needs of their peers. You will explore different perspectives on organisations, change and new approaches grounded in years of practical experience as well as sound academic research.

There is a pressing national and international need to understand the nature and consequences of climatic change and to develop adaptation strategies. The UCL Climate Change MSc provides rigorous scientific and vocational training for the next generation of climate change professionals.

Degree information

The programme provides you with a knowledge and understanding of the Earth system (incorporating the atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, lithosphere) and the nature and causes of climate variability and change. It combines observationally based climate and environmental science with state-of-the-art modelling, specifically concerned with understanding the impacts of climate change. It seeks to place climate change within the context of broader anthropogenic environmental change and social policy dimensions.

Dissertation/report
All students undertake an independent research project which culminates in a dissertation of approximately 12,000 words and an oral presentation.

Teaching and learning
The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars, tutorials and laboratory and computer-based practical classes. Assessment is through independent project work, practical-based and written coursework, and the dissertation.

Careers

The programme provides an ideal foundation for PhD research, or for employment with a wide range of private industries, non-governmental organisations, government agencies and environmental consultancies. The MA starts from the premise that since the idea of climate change has penetrated into all aspects of human life, a fully cultural analysis of climate change and its responses is necessary to gain understanding, beyond that offered by scientific, political and economic analyses. This demands the study of a wide range of human beliefs, attributes and practices: peoples’ worldviews and values, the different ways knowledge is made, narratives of development and environmental change, the changing nature of expertise and cultural performances. Venues

The first residential session will take place at the New Lanark Mill Hotel in New Lanark, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located not far from Glasgow and Edinburgh. The LLM in Climate Change and Human Rights provides a comprehensive overview of human rights law and how it works in relation to the environment and the urgent topic of climate change. The MSc in Environmental Change, Impact and Adaptation is your opportunity to study the latest understanding of environmental change and our efforts to plan for and manage future change. Having completed your undergraduate degree in a related field, this MSc will enable you to bring your skills and knowledge up to date with a view to continuing in employment or further research.

A series of new modules have been developed specifically for this programme and ensure you will receive a balanced appreciation of many aspects of environmental change. You will critically assess the evidence for environmental change across ecosystems and different temporal scales; gain experience in field-based data collection; examine the historic, present and future risks posed to human societies; and critically eval­uate solutions proposed to address challenges arising from climatic and environmental change.

Our lecturers are active researchers working at the cutting edge of their disciplines, and you will benefit from being taught the latest geographical theories and techniques. In the most recent Research Excellence Framework assessment (REF 2014) DGES retained its crown of the best Geography department in Wales, with 78% of the research being undertaken classified as either "world leading" or "internationally excellent”. DGES is also in the top ten of UK Geography departments with regard to research power, which provides a measure of the quality of research, as well as of the number of staff undertaking research within the department.

This degree will stand you in good stead for a career in risk management, development, disaster relief, environmental management or consultancy. This course is also highly suitable to prepare you for future research at PhD level.

Format

The course begins with an overseas fieldtrip in week one where you will learn to devise your own field-based experiments to investigate environmental change. Training will be given in a range of advanced techniques such as quantification of CO2 emissions from soils and interpretation of evidence for past climate and environments in the landscape. There are no written exams, instead we use a variety of alternative assessment methods including short-film making, white papers, tender reports, computing practicals, field-based experiments, reviews and essays.

This course is delivered by the Department of Geography and Earth Sciences, which has links to Natural Resources Wales and the Centre for Alternative Technology. You will also be assigned a personal tutor and a dissertation coordinator to support your personal and academic needs.

This course will help you develop the latest technological, theoretical and practical understanding of the subject and a range of transferable skills to support your employability. You will be able to: expertly debate the subject in written, oral and on-line forums; develop alternative approaches to research; work independently and as part of a team; undertake self-regulation of work regimes and time management; and collate, process and interpret data sets efficiently.

Contact time is approximately 10-14 hours a week in the first two semesters. During semester three you will arrange your level of contact time with your assigned supervisor.

Assessment

The programme comprises 180 credits. There are 120 credits of taught modules completed during Semester 1 and Semester 2. This is followed by a research dissertation (60 credits) in semester 3.

MSc Behaviour Change (Ergonomics and Human Factors)

You’ll study one module per term (three modules per year). You can do either the full MSc in your chosen pathway over three years, or take a step off award after one year (Postgraduate Certificate) or after two years (Postgraduate Diploma in your chosen pathway).
Although the three pathways share several modules, they are distinctive and tailored to the specific needs of students on each specific pathway. For all module coursework, you’re encouraged to focus on specific contexts that matter to you and your practical experience. At the start of year two, you study a pathway-specific module, and in your masters research project, you’ll identify a research issue related to behaviour change relevant to your chosen pathway.
