This course in detail

Module structure
- Challenging Behaviour
This module explores challenging behaviour from a variety of perspectives and provides you with an overview of individual and contextual factors which may influence children and young people's behaviour. During seminar workshops you will discuss theoretical perspectives in relation to problematising children and young people's social, emotional and mental health. Particular attention will be paid to 'causes' of challenging behaviour, individual and whole school approaches to managing behaviour and the importance of recognising pupil voice and increasing pupil participation. You will be encouraged to reflect on, and critique, alternative educational provisions.

- Action Research (double module)
You will determine the content of the sessions by focusing on the inquiries selected by both yourself and others, adopting a 'learning set' approach. Group seminars and workshops will provide a structured introduction to action research followed by the development of small working groups to support the stages of individual projects and provide peer group support. Your tutor will signpost you to relevant academic theory and research and support material from the MA in Education online resources.

Teaching and learning

The first module, 'Challenging Behaviour', requires regular evening attendance (seven evening sessions) in the Autumn and this is followed by a double action research module in which you will complete a research project in your own school based on work with children / young people with behaviour difficulties.

This research project will be supported by six workshops between January and June, and individual tutorial support based around your particular project.

Workshops take place on Wednesday evenings 5.00 - 8.00pm on the Harcourt Hill Campus.

This MSc Behaviour Analysis and Therapy course provides a solid understanding of the scientific principles that underpin behaviour analysis, and the therapeutic techniques derived from those principles. The MSc Behaviour Analysis and Therapy has been designed to reflect certification standards and covers a full range of topics in Behaviour Analysis. However, it is possible for students to complete our Postgraduate Certificate programme which allows students to complete supervised practice in addition to this MSc. Students may either choose to start this qualification after completion of the MSc or may begin work towards their supervised practice alongside their MSc studies.

Learning and teaching methods

You will be taught through face-to-face delivery in the form of lectures, seminars and practical workshops. Additionally you will develop your research skills through the completion of a supervised dissertation component. The teaching delivery will be blocked into two days per week for full-time students.

The teaching team has well established links with schools, social care settings and healthcare providers, which provide ideal locations for dissertation research. You may also have opportunities to assist with ongoing research or clinical work in the field, as well as working in the University’s Psychology and Well-Being Clinic (PAWB Wales), which provides early intervention therapy to children with autism.

This includes eye tracking equipment which is capable of studying the eye movements of individuals whilst they complete cognitive tasks. The suite includes EEG (electroencephalogram) and ECG (electrocardiogram) facilities for recording electrical activity in the heart and scalp. There is also a driving simulator which is currently being used by postgraduate students to complete a study which examines the effects of stressors on driving performance.

Our Applied Behaviour Analysis programme includes a course sequence approved by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board. Its completion, therefore, meets two of the requirements for certification as a Behaviour Analyst. Successful students will need to obtain appropriate supervised experience and pass the BACB exam. Many of our ABA students hope to take this career path, applying their skills either in work with children or adults with autism (ie early intervention programmes or in schools using an ABA approach) or with children/adults with learning disabilities whose behaviour is described as challenging. Every week we are asked to notify our students of opportunities in these fields. Our ABA programme is also suitable for parents of children/adults with autism or learning disability, who are looking to increase their own understanding of ABA.

What you will study

Our Behaviour Analysis course is practice-based, giving you an opportunity to apply your behaviour analytic skills in a range of settings. You will study 20-25 hours per week (full-time) or 10-15 hours per week (part-time) in a placement arranged by the supervision team, as well as attending weekly supervision meetings.

Learning and teaching methods

You will rotate placements approximately every six months, which will allow you to support people with a range of challenging behaviours with behaviour analytic assessment and intervention strategies.

Clients may include individuals with various disorders or difficulties, including autism, learning disabilities, social and emotional difficulties, ADHD, and antisocial behaviour. Placements with children, adolescents, or adults are available.

Settings may include, but are not limited to, schools, the NHS Learning Disability Service, and residential treatment centres. You also will have the opportunity to work in the University’s Psychology and Well-Being Clinic Wales (PAWB Wales), where you will assist in providing early intervention therapy to young children with autism. This sequence includes academic essays focused on understanding challenging behaviour, assessments of individual student behaviour identified as problematic, the development and implementation of plans to address this, reflection on institutional behaviour policy and a piece of small-scale research in schools/colleges.

• Assessment one, Unit 1, requires reflection on understandings of behavioural problems, taking individual students’ contexts into account. The second and third involve assessing a learner whose behaviour is seen as challenging, and designing, developing, implementing and evaluating a plan designed to address this behaviour.

• Assessments in Unit 2 relate to analysis and reflection on current school/college policy on behaviour, and the design, development, implementation and critical evaluation of a small-scale research project focused on effecting change in the institution that will have a positive impact on student behaviour.

Careers

Typically graduates of this course either continue working in their own institutions or else are promoted to positions of greater responsibility.

This is an advanced professional development programme for psychology and social science graduates and professionals. Through this programme you will undertake analysis of issues appertaining to the care and progression of individuals with developmental disabilities. You will assess different types of interventions and will have the opportunity to engage with disability service providers and users. You will gain detailed knowledge and understanding of:

  • definitions and epidemiology of intellectual disability
  • cognitive, communicative and social characteristics of people with intellectual disabilities
  • biological, social and environmental causes of intellectual disability
  • behaviour analysis
  • challenging behaviour and other special needs
  • ideology, policy and service development
  • definition and measurement of service quality
  • the relationships between service organisation and quality
  • research methodology and basic statistical analysis

Course structure

Coursework is taught through a mixture of web-based resources, directed reading, videos, lectures, seminars and practical sessions, supported by a number of workshops, where you work with skilled professionals and have the opportunity to share ideas and experiences with fellow students. You will also undertake practical work placements which are assessed by written reports as well as having the opportunity to complete a piece of original research with your Research Project.

Course details

Professional Development is increasingly important in the career development of all professionals within Education and Children’s Services in general. This distance education course will provide you with an increased knowledge/and understanding of Social, Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties (SEBD) and it is particularly suited to teachers, care workers, mentors, youth workers and learning support assistants working in primary, secondary, further education and specialist settings. 

The programme uses the National College for Teaching and Leadership competencies for core and expert standards for working with pupils experiencing social, emotional and behavioural difficulties (SEBD). From these standards the programme provides a wider context for knowledge and understanding of SEBD, the development of skills and expertise in meeting these pupils’ needs, and professional experience upon which to promote good practice.

Learning and teaching

Each student has a personal tutor in a regional tutor group. Study is supported through study packs, tutorial groups, web based learning, online materials, telephone and email contact which allows students to learn with each other. Internet access is required for the programme. There is a university based study-weekend twice a year.

Employability

The Social, Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties programme is ideal for those working in settings which provide education for children and young people with SEBD. It is particularly suited to teachers, care workers, mentors, youth workers and learning support assistants working in primary, secondary, further education and specialist settings. Upon completion of this course, you will have experience in dealing with pupils with challenging behaviour within educational settings.

There is the opportunity to work towards a further professional qualification in the field of Education both within schools and in other settings, including progression to a PhD or EdD. The excellent careers advice provided by personal tutors has encouraged many of our graduates to successfully apply for leadership roles working with children with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties.   • A sound understanding of the underlying concepts and principles associated with Behaviour Analysis, and of the applications of these concepts and principles
  • A knowledge of the research skills required for Behaviour Analysis, including the ability to read, interpret and appraise published behavioural research critically, and the ability to conduct fundamental and, where appropriate, applied research in Behaviour Analysis
  • An understanding of functional analyses of problem behaviour and of how to develop an appropriate programme for behaviour change in their area of speciality
  • Analytic and library research skills, as well as skills in presenting proposals and reports in both written and oral format

The Behaviour Analysis courses in this programme provide a course sequence approved by the Behavior Analysis Certification Board ®, Inc. (BACB) (http://www.bacb.com) as meeting the academic requirements to sit the examination to become a Board Certified Assistant Behaviour Analyst, and contribute to a BACB® approved course sequence for a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA®). Students can also progress on to further postgraduate study to complete the full BACB® approved.

Career opportunities

Depending on your specialty, you may work in a range of settings (including research institutions, private practice, schools, special education settings, universities, health services, business and industry, governmental agencies and zoos), and with a range of populations (including families, people with psychological problems, children with challenging behaviours, individuals with special needs, teachers, people and their pets, agricultural species and any others seeking positive behaviour change).

Students who specialised in the application of Behaviour Analysis to human behaviour are working in the community, in mental health, and in educational settings and with a wide range of individuals.

However, it doesn’t matter what type of psychology you choose to practice, or whether you end up in a field orientated to people or animals. What is important is that you gain an understanding of how and why organisms behave (i.e., what maintains and/or influences behaviour) whether it be private or public.

Industry Experience

Many students intending careers involving application of behaviour analysis (for example, those who intend to work with families, children or with people with an intellectual disability) gain practical experience alongside their graduate studies.

This can be voluntary work or paid work as a support worker. In addition, sometimes experience can be gained though working for parents or trusts who employ students specialising in applied behaviour analysis to work with their children, helping to implement programmes for them.

The MAppPsy(BA) programme includes training in the skills required to work practically applying behaviour analytic principles to behaviour change.

Applied behaviour analysis has been recognised as the treatment of choice for a broad range of clinical problems (e.g., early intervention for autism, responding to challenging behaviour, classroom management, effective instructional practices). Positive behavioural support (PBS) is an example of behaviour analysis in a particular practice setting (usually implemented for adults with intellectual disabilities or within special education settings). PBS aims to improve a person’s quality of life through the use of a framework that allows behaviour to be analysed in the social, physical, and broader context in which it occurs. The aims of the course are to develop an advanced conceptual understanding of applied behaviour analysis, behavioural concepts and philosophy relevant to the development and treatment of psychological disorders, advanced knowledge of positive behavioural support and research methods. In addition, students will develop key competencies in the use of behavioural principles in clinical settings using the positive behaviour support model. In addition to obtaining PBS and behaviour analytic knowledge, graduates will have acquired critical evaluation, time management, collaborative working, sound professional conduct, and oral communication skills. The course is taught via lectures, group discussions, seminars, and activities. Assessments include written assignments in a range of formats and unseen exams. Students may undertake a research thesis in a range of available applied settings with a range of participants, or they may complete an internship across two years (limited places available). During the internship, students will work in an applied setting and will submit a portfolio of their clinical work at the end of each year.
