Overview

Our PG Cert International Trade and Commercial Law course* online can be achieved as a stand-alone qualification or used as a stepping stone towards our full LLM. The course enables students to explore areas such as law of world trade organisation, international competition law, and international sales of goods.

Law is a widely recognised and highly respected subject and the knowledge gained on our PG Cert International Trade and Commercial Law will open up many opportunities for you to develop your career a high-level career in an international law firm, multinational company or governmental organisation.

Course structure

The PG Cert International Trade and Commercial Law is made up of the following modules and, upon completion, is equal to a total of 60 credits.

Level 7 modules:

Law of the World Trade Organisation (20 credits)
International Competition Law (20 credits)
International Sales of Goods (20 credits)

Upon completion of your PG Cert International Trade and Commercial Law we offer the opportunity for you to progress to study for our PG Dip degree (120 credits).

Learning and assessment

Introduction:

Studying online gives you the freedom to study when and where it suits you – at home, during your lunch hour or anywhere else you have internet access.

All of our online courses have an indicative study duration but it’s possible to complete your studies faster than the standard course duration by doubling up on modules at certain times; however, minimum study durations do apply.

Teaching methods and style:

As we are a 100% online university, we utilise a Virtual Learning Environment instead of a traditional campus. The system tracks and manages the learning process in real-time and provides you with immediate access to your learning materials.

This learning platform allows both students and tutors to actively take part in real-time conversations and you can listen to, and view, live lectures and seminars over the internet.

You are supported throughout your course by a dedicated Student Adviser and have the opportunity to regularly interact with fellow students and your tutor.

Assessment:

We adopt an assignment-based approach to assessment instead of exams. Assessment for the PG Cert International Trade and Commercial Law will be based on a combination of written coursework.

You will always be aware of your current provisional grade right from the start of the programme, allowing you to evaluate the success of your current study methods and clearly identify areas to improve. We believe that this transparency gives you the information you need to make the most of your postgraduate course. We achieve this by:

A particular emphasis is placed on translation and leadership – marrying theoretical understanding with practical knowledge of how to make sustainable change. Introduction

This is a new, innovative program to educate students from a wide range of backgrounds (from basic scientists to all levels of healthcare professionals) to interpret and understand genomic data that increasingly impacts on service delivery to patients and the community. The programme is flexible and modular and includes full- and part-time MSc options, delivered over one or two years respectively. There are also full-time and part-time Postgraduate Certificate (PG Cert) or Postgraduate Diploma (PG Dip) options. In addition, students can select individual modules to study as a short course for CPPD purposes. Our aim is to enhance knowledge and skills in this rapidly evolving, expanding and clinically relevant field by providing a flexible, multi-disciplinary and multi-professional perspective in genomics applied to clinical practice and medical research.

Course Structure

The MSc programme also includes a core research module with opportunities to access the emerging data from the 100,000 Genomes Project through the Genomics England Clinical Interpretation Partnership (GeCIP) training domains. The programme is one of the preferred providers for Health Education England and our course values and upholds the NHS Constitution.

The programme includes collaborations with the Institute for Cancer Research, Buckinghamshire New University and Brunel University London.

The course is flexible and modular and is available as a full- or part-time MSc, delivered over one or two years respectively. There are also full-time and part-time Postgraduate Certificate (PG Cert) and Postgraduate Diploma (PG Dip) options.

Full-time students should register for the qualification they wish to exit with, either PG Cert, PG Dip or the MSc. Part-time students should register for the PG Cert in the first instance and may progress to the other awards should they so wish.

Delivery and assessment

A blended learning approach is taken towards the delivery of both the PG Cert and the MA, comprising of online teaching and learning activities and face-to-face workshop days.
- For the PG Cert, face-to-face input will take place at workshop days (six in total).
- For the MA, there is initially a greater proportion of face-to-face input supported by online teaching and learning activities.
For both qualifications, you’ll engage in a range of teaching and learning methods. These will include lectures, online activities, case study investigations, simulation exercises or role plays, interactive or group learning, and real-life practice and application of skills through University links and school partners.

Assessment for the Enhancing Learning and Teaching through Reflective Practice module is through the completion of a patchwork text (a series of separate pieces of work that are ‘sewn’ together at the end to link to the structure of the module) and reflective commentary; it includes the observation of your teaching.

The Developing Assessment for Learning module is based on a negotiated format which you can discuss with your tutor and also includes a reflective commentary. You could choose to carry out a patchwork text, group project or an essay, depending on your individual strengths and the methods you work best with.

We use online submission and feedback for our final assessments. With students across the sector increasingly expected to use online plagiarism detection software packages, this offers you an insight into both ‘sides’ of the tool, as well as the opportunity to try out the system from a ‘student’ perspective.

The Family Therapy course is designed for professionals working in a mental health setting, such as nurses, GPs, paediatricians, psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers and occupational therapists.

The Addiction Studies course is designed for students and professionals interested in the conceptualisation, treatment and prevention of addictive behaviours. It provides a widely recognised qualification with an integrated multi-disciplinary teaching and learning approach to the problems of use, dependence on alcohol, nicotine and other psychoactive drugs, and other addictive behaviours.

The course recognises that its students come from a variety of backgrounds with the goal of extending their theoretical knowledge and practical skills beyond those related to the subjects that they studied at undergraduate level. For example, a nurse or youth counsellor may wish to increase their knowledge of molecular biology or psychopharmacology, while psychology graduates may wish to increase their knowledge and familiarity with treatment options. It is for this reason that our course starts with introductory modules that ensure all students, regardless of their background, have a basic understanding of the core concepts that underlie the clinical, scientific and public health aspects of addiction before they embark on individual research and a more rigorous exploration of these areas.

The Workplace Health Management programme is designed for those with an interest in promoting health and safety at work including nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and managers. Applicants with a non-clinical background are eligible to enrol on the Graduate Certificate element of the programme which consists of three modules. There is a clinical element to the BSc; as one of the final modules has a clinical component.

Those who have completed the Grad Cert pathway will be able to seek employment in a wide diversity of settings within both the public and private sectors. In addition to gaining employment within the NHS, graduates of programmes offered by LSBU have gained employment with international airlines, the financial services sector, legal practices and manufacturing industries. Others have set up their own successful consultancies.

You will spend 50% of the course in an OH practice setting. Shared learning with other practitioners who work in the OH setting is encouraged.

The awards meet the national professional standards, determined by the Learning Skills Improvement Service (LSIS) and allow you to apply for Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills status (QTLS) when you have completed your course. QTLS has been recognised as equivalent to QTS allowing holders to work in secondary schools.

We equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary for the demanding role of teacher / lecturer. The course is endorsed within the national framework for the sector and constitutes the University's equivalent of the Diploma in Education and Training.

What will I study?

All students follow a course of study and research which covers an introduction to post-compulsory education; curriculum issues, particularly around inclusive practice; enterprise and quality; principles of learning and the characteristics of the post-14 learner; planning for learning and methods of teaching and assessment. Fully integrated into this course is a structured and supervised practical teaching component in one of our partner institutions.

The course consists of four modules:

2. Learning and Teaching: the Professional Tutor

What will I teach?

This course equips you with the skills required to teach, but not subject-specific knowledge. Schools and colleges have a wide curriculum and as long as we can find you an appropriate placement, we can accept you to train for any subject you have the relevant experience to teach.

However, two specialist study pathways are also available, with generous government bursaries to support your study:

You apply for the generic PGCE Post-Compulsory Education and Training course and can choose to specialise once you start the course if you have the appropriate subject background.

Teaching experience

Full-time study

There are two full-time blocks of teaching practice - six weeks in the second half of the autumn term and ten weeks in the spring / summer terms. Part-time study

To educate, train and equip students from a chemistry, pharmacy or related background to enter employment as radiopharmaceutical scientists in a PET radiochemistry centre (cyclotron unit) or in a conventional radiopharmacy, to provide diagnostic and therapeutic radiopharmaceuticals to nuclear medicine centres or specialised commercial centres, or to study for PhD in this field.

- Course format and assessment -

The programme is assessed by a variety of mechanisms including: written examinations; practical laboratory work and reports; case studies and oral presentations; workshops; audio-visual presentations; and laboratory- or library-based research projects.

Career prospects

Expected destinations are the NHS and commercial nuclear medicine services, the pharmaceutical industry or PhD research.
