If you work in any context where a relationship is required to support an individual in learning. You develop your skills in pastoral care in order to support young people in their educational workplace setting or other appropriate agency. This postgraduate programme is open to all professionals who have a caring role with young people. It aims to provide a response to the continuing professional development needs of those who wish to extend their skills and knowledge into new areas of guidance, care and support which pertain within their establishment, but in particular, within an educational setting. 

Graduates of this programme have enriched their learning and application and some have benefited from promotion. We are able to offer you teaching lead research directly from our three broad interrelated themes of 'Communities and Partnerships,' 'Professional Learning and Teaching Education,' and 'Pedagogy and Innovation.' This programme enables exploration of the theoretical basis of manipulative physiotherapy and its application to the development of your clinical reasoning. Using the process of clinical reasoning as its framework, this programme integrates the many approaches to practice in this specialist area. It facilitates an evaluation of existing evidence through the exploration of the assessment and management of neuromusculoskeletal dysfunction. 

The programme offers part-time and full-time modes of study, providing you with the opportunity to tailor your learning experience to meet your personal and professional needs.

Learning and teaching

As a Birmingham student, you will be joining the academic elite and will have the privilege of learning from world-leading experts, as well as your peers. From the outset you will be encouraged to become an independent and self-motivated learner. We want you to be challenged and will encourage you to think for yourself.

This programme is delivered via week long or two/three day blocks of teaching. If you decide to only take one module per semester, you will only need to be at the University for the duration of that module and any scheduled tutorials(organised by each module leader depending on the module). Physiotherapy graduates have entered careers both in the NHS and private sector. They work in hospitals, in the community as well as sports clubs and the military. This innovative programme with its football medicine focus is delivered through a partnership between The Football Association and the University of Birmingham.

The programme is aimed at physiotherapists and doctors and is ideal for those either working within football medicine or interested in moving into football medicine.

The learning and teaching for two specialist modules is delivered in the tranquil grounds of St George’s park, the Football Association’s flagship national facility. Anatomy teaching is delivered in the state-of-the-art prosectorium at University of Birmingham

This is a research-led programme delivered within a School with 90% of its research classified as world leading or internationally excellent, with experts from football medicine, sports medicine and musculoskeletal medicine.

The programme is part of a collaboration framework of MSc and MRes programmes between the School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences and the College of Medical and Dental Sciences.

Course details

The overall aim of the programme is to enable exploration of the theoretical basis of exercise and sports medicine in general and football in particular, and its application to the development of a physiotherapist's and doctor's clinical reasoning. Using the process of clinical reasoning as its framework, the programme will integrate the key issues central to practice in this specialist area, including: clinical assessment, communication skills, accurate diagnosis, differential diagnosis, diagnostics and prognostics, treatment interventions, management approaches, best evidence, evaluation of outcome, strategies to reduce injury time etc.

The programme will facilitate the evaluation of existing evidence through the exploration of the assessment and management of athletes. It will provide students with the opportunity to tailor their learning experience to meet their personal and professional needs, developing their their capacity for leadership within a multidisciplinary team providing clinical management in football. The programme will promote enquiry based learning through a range of strategies including case analysis and problem based learning.

The programme is written in line with the international competencies and standards established by the International Federation of Sports Physiotherapists and the Specialty Training Curriculum for Sports and Exercise Medicine from the Joint Royal Colleges of Physicians Training Board, and in collaboration with The Football Association and physiotherapists and doctors working within football and other sporting contexts.

In the first year, part-time you attend for one afternoon per week for the first ten weeks and then two three-day blocks followed by one afternoon per week in the last ten weeks. In the second year there are four three-day blocks and one afternoon per week in the final ten weeks. Full-time students attend all of the sessions in one year.

Lectures are by subject specialists, NHS clinicians, service users and carers. Many of the lectures are from visiting experts who practice and/or research in their specific field. The course is academic in nature and you are expected to use the basic content as a springboard for further self-study. All programme presentations and materials are available on Canvas (the University’s on-line learning platform) for follow up after lectures.

The environmental impact from the use of fossil fuels and the uncertainties in their sources of supply has led to many alternative energy sources being investigated. But of these, only nuclear fission power is at present sufficiently developed to provide an economically viable alternative to fossil fuels.

This programme began in 1956 with the build of the first nuclear reactor in Britain. Since then we have continually updated the areas of study and degree of specialisation to reflect the increasing sophistication of the field. At the same time we have maintained the overall breadth of the course, because we feel this allows new entrants to the field to gain a perspective that will be of continuous help in their future careers.

Course details

The taught element from September to May consists of 180 credits. You will also undertake a 60-credit research project which may be undertaken within the industry.

In the autumn and spring semesters, you will study all of your taught modules. In the summer you will work on your own research project chosen from a wide range of topics in the field. This project may be conducted at the University, but more frequently in recent years we have arranged for projects to be undertaken within industry, giving students an opportunity for direct interaction and enhancing their employment prospects.

Studentships are sponsored by the nuclear industry in the UK, and these provide excellent and effective entry routes into careers in this stimulating field for physicists, mathematicians, metallurgists or engineers.

This programme covers a wide range of the skills required to work in the nuclear industry and is co-taught with world-leading academic staff from different Schools within the University.

This programme is a response to the current skills shortage in this area and trains high quality graduates for the nuclear industry. Breakdown of course

The course is made up of a total of 180 credits, 120 of which are from taught modules and a research project forms the basis of the remaining 60 credits.

Being flexible in its nature, this MSc/PG Diploma in Civil Engineering permits every student to tailor the programme of studies to suit their own chosen career, benefiting from the range of specialist modules available to all MSc students. Flexibility also means that graduates of non-civil engineering disciplines may be eligible for study: Please enquire if this applies in your particular case and the School will make an assessment based on previous study and experience.

This programme provides a solid basis for a career in the implementation of construction and civil engineering projects. It includes lectures, tutorials, workshops, industrial seminars, site visits and an individual project.

The taught element takes place between September and May. In order to achieve the MSc degree, students will go on to undertake a major individual project in the May to September period. Diploma students do not take the individual project. The taught part of the programme consists of nominally 1200 student effort hours including some 400 contact hours of lectures, seminars, tutorials and workshops. The individual project involves approximate 600 hours of student effort.

It is possible to study full-time or part-time, as modules are delivered in intensive week-long blocks. This means that students can combine work and study, attending university for these weeks only. A student's performance is assessed by written examinations and individual coursework. The research project report is submitted and presented (end of August/early September) for assessment. Students must normally reach a satisfactory standard in the written examinations to be permitted to proceed to the individual project. Formal examinations are normally held during the week immediately before the Spring term, in early January, and during May; submission of the project thesis is usually due by early September.

Transfer between Postgraduate Diploma and MSc is possible upon completion of the Diploma for a Diploma student who satisfies the MSc requirements. The Diploma may be awarded to an MSc student who fails to complete the individual project.

The key objectives of the course are:

  • A systematic understanding of Project Management knowledge, and critical awareness of current challenges in an industrial context
  • A comprehensive understanding of techniques applicable to advanced study of Project Management
  • Innovation in the application of Project Management knowledge, but with a practical understanding of how established techniques of research and enquiry are used to create and interpret information
  • Conceptual understanding of Project Management that enables them to critically evaluate current research and advanced scholarship and evaluate methodologies and develop critiques of them

Programme content

The course is modular in structure with six compulsory taught 20 credit modules (120 credit taught material) and a major project in the third year (60 credits). Students may choose to complete one year (for a Certificate in Project Management), two years (for a Diploma in Project Management) or a full three-year MSc course. The first two years are made up of three modules per year. Each module is a mix of theory, practical example and coursework, and requires the equivalent of around 200 study hours. The course also offers three on campus Learning Hub sessions, each consisting of between one and two and a half days of intensive consolidation and interaction. The third year comprises a major project on an in-depth industrial project, managed using the principles and tools taught in the previous two years.

The University of Birmingham's virtual learning platform presents students with a superior environment for their online studies. The programme will include 9 subject-specific technical modules of 10 credits each covering vehicle engineering, mechanics, thermal systems, energy, computational geometry, manufacturing processes, robotics, biomechanics, and micro electro-mechanical systems. A 20-credit synoptic mechanical engineering module has been integrated into the programme and provides research-focused teaching of selected novel case studies from various research areas being carried out within the School in order to enhance the relevant knowledge base of the students. 

A further 10 credit module covering research skills, project management and business enterprise will provide the necessary training to enhance the competencies in professional skills that modern mechanical engineers are expected to possess. The latter part of the programme will include a 60 credit summer project module. The project can either be based at the University, or be carried out in industry.

The Master of Research (MRes) programme in Railway Systems Integration prepares postgraduates for careers in research and development (R&D) in railway businesses and companies supplying railways with advanced technical and operational systems. The programme can also serve as a stepping stone to doctoral studies by developing candidates’ analytical skills and research know-how. 

The MRes offers a unique opportunity for students to undertake a research-based Masters degree together with technical study in a relevant railway systems or engineering subject. Students benefit from participating in both the fundamental and applied research carried out within the Birmingham Centre for Railway Research and Education, and from the world-leading educational programmes offered by the Centre. The programme comprises 3 classroom taught technology oriented modules and a research skills module that consists of three main elements, namely, reviewing literature, analysing data and modelling the behaviour of technical systems. Two thirds of the period of study are devoted to independent research that is documented in a substantial thesis. Part-time students follow the same syllabus as full-time students but complete the taught modules and the thesis in a sequence that best suits their work commitments. Part-time study allows for work and research to take place alongside each other, contextualising research research activities directly into the employer's organisation.

This is an interdisciplinary programme that combines a major research project with technical studies that build on prior academic study or industrial experience in a relevant subject area. the fundamental principles of either chemical engineering or the relevant biological science.

A wide range of optional modules enables you to gain specific knowledge relating to fuel cells, food and/or pharmaceutical product development. Safety, regulatory and quality issues applicable across the relevant industries are also considered. Core skill modules are topics that may be applied across all themed areas. You may also choose to study business and management modules, or develop mathematical modelling skills.
