This award combines the taught elements of the Legal Practice Course (120 credits) with a tutor guided research project (60 credits). Alongside the LPC core and elective modules, students will undertake a Blended Learning module in Legal Research Methods where they will engage with differing research methodologies and practices and produce an assessed final project/dissertation proposal.

Students will have two primary options for their final research project/dissertation in that they can opt to align their research to their work within a legal field or if not currently employed in the legal sector can choose from a prescribed list of academic research topics.

Upon successful completion students will have attained a full Master of Laws degree in Legal Practice which will enhance their employability. From September 2016, the revised award attracts the new Postgraduate Student Loans which will assist students in funding their studies.

Meg has extensive background in designing and evaluating positive user experiences using computing devices. She applies e-learning methods in her teaching, having worked on a number of JISC and EU-funded projects such as PC3 and EuroPlot. Generix have previously provided our students with workshops on how to use Observer Network Management platform. The political and social dimensions of religions are at the heart of this innovative programme, which explores the role of religions and theology in global development. You’ll consider religion as a resource, obstacle and participant in development, exploring the relationships between religions, aid agencies and local communities.

You’ll develop your understanding of both development and religious studies, as core modules introduce you to theories and issues in development and how they relate to developing countries across the Global South. In addition, you’ll choose from optional modules in each area, allowing you to specialise in topics such as the links between conflict or gender and development, or the role of religion in public life.

Drawing on sociological, historical, anthropological and political approaches, this diverse degree will equip you with the skills and knowledge to research the relationship between religions and development in a stimulating environment.

This programme is also available to study part-time over 24 months.

Course content

This course is taught jointly by Theology and Religious Studies and the Centre for Global Development.

Across the year you’ll study a core module introducing you to theories and approaches in development studies, and how social, economic and political inequalities lay at the heart of development. In Semester Two another core module will focus on the complex relationships between religions and global development – the views of different religious traditions towards issues such as poverty, gender and welfare, and the roles they can play in development.

At the same time you’ll be thinking about your dissertation: an independent research project on a topic of your choice which allows you to demonstrate the skills and subject knowledge that you gain. You can choose to extend your dissertation if you want to go into even greater depth. You’ll submit the finished dissertation by the end of the programme in August.

You’ll also have other opportunities to specialise, as you choose from optional modules to focus on topics that suit your interests or career plans. In development studies, you’ll select from modules on topics such as democracy and development, or Africa in the modern world. If you opt for the standard dissertation, you’ll choose another module from religious studies.

You’ll think about theological and philosophical responses to issues in the public sphere, the place of religion in public policy on issues such as discrimination and multiculturalism, and the bonds that tie individuals to their communities. Using approaches from sociology, religious studies, theology, history, anthropology and philosophy among others, you’ll also learn about the research process.

Core modules will introduce you to key issues and approaches, and you’ll choose from optional modules to explore topics that suit your interests such as religion and gender, Muslims and multiculturalism, or remembering the Holocaust. Guided by experts in an active research environment, you’ll gain an insight into the significance of religion in the public sphere.

The MRes in Educational Studies is a combined programme consisting of a taught element and a research element. The taught element consists of a number of core modules which are taken from the Doctoral Research Training programme. You will then complete a 20,000 words research dissertation.

With over 100 lecturing and research staff and dedicated research centres, our School of Education is one of the largest research-led schools of education in the UK with a distinguished reputation for excellence in our research and teaching practice both nationally and internationally. More than 82% of its research was rated as ‘internationally excellent’ (3*) or ‘world leading’ (4*) in the 2014 REF. In addition, the University is one of only 12 UK institutions to have been awarded 'Doctoral Training Centre' status by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), the UK funding body for social sciences. 

Course details

The MRes in Educational Studies is a combined programme consisting of a taught element and a research element with a dissertation of 20,000 words.

The taught element consists of the following core modules which are taken from the Doctoral Research Training programme.   

Programme content

The core modules you will take are:

  • Philosophy of Social Research 
  • Research Design, Practice and Ethics
  • Fundamentals in Quantitative Research Methods
  • Foundations in Qualitative Research

You will then complete a 20,000 words research dissertation.

Learning and teaching

You will undertake advanced research under the supervision and guidance of an experienced member of the School of Education staff. 

Research Facilities 

The School of Education is equipped with the facilities to suit your needs, whatever programme you may be studying with us. As a doctoral researcher you will have 24-hour access to work space in our research suite, where there are computer and telephone facilities. You also have access to University libraries and computer facilities, as well as other entitlements such as grants towards conference attendance and photocopying. Many research students work with supervisors in publishing articles and making their work public.  

Employability

Over the last five years, an impressive 98.3 % of Education postgraduates have been in work and/or further study six months after graduation.

Birmingham’s Education graduates choose to work in variety of education roles in schools and administrative roles in public and private sector organisations. Work in retail, sales and administration are also popular options. Some chose to continue their education and apply for professional courses such as teacher training. It will also appeal to applicants with teaching and research interests in this area.

What type of career assistance is available to postgraduate researchers in Education? 

The College of Social Sciences, to which the School of Education belongs, has specially designated careers advisors and careers consultants who can provide guidance for postgraduate researchers on career paths, CVs, training opportunities, application and interviews. The University’s central Careers’ Service also runs workshops and offers personally tailored advice and guidance including 1-1 careers advice and 1-1 CV advice. The Career’s Service runs CV writing workshops especially for postgraduates in the College of Social Sciences, giving advice on how to compile CVs for both employment and for academic roles. 

The University also has dedicated careers advisors who run workshops and provide networking opportunities with potential employers. These are especially popular with international postgraduate researchers.
