This course is designed for people who are new to a careers role and who feel they need to learn the foundations of what makes effective careers work in schools. This programme enables exploration of the theoretical basis of manipulative physiotherapy and its application to the development of your clinical reasoning. Using the process of clinical reasoning as its framework, this programme integrates the many approaches to practice in this specialist area. It facilitates an evaluation of existing evidence through the exploration of the assessment and management of neuromusculoskeletal dysfunction. 

The programme offers part-time and full-time modes of study, providing you with the opportunity to tailor your learning experience to meet your personal and professional needs.

Learning and teaching

As a Birmingham student, you will be joining the academic elite and will have the privilege of learning from world-leading experts, as well as your peers. This programme is delivered via week long or two/three day blocks of teaching. The programme is aimed at physiotherapists and doctors and is ideal for those either working within football medicine or interested in moving into football medicine.

The learning and teaching for two specialist modules is delivered in the tranquil grounds of St George’s park, the Football Association’s flagship national facility. Anatomy teaching is delivered in the state-of-the-art prosectorium at University of Birmingham

This is a research-led programme delivered within a School with 90% of its research classified as world leading or internationally excellent, with experts from football medicine, sports medicine and musculoskeletal medicine.

The programme is part of a collaboration framework of MSc and MRes programmes between the School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences and the College of Medical and Dental Sciences.

Course details

The overall aim of the programme is to enable exploration of the theoretical basis of exercise and sports medicine in general and football in particular, and its application to the development of a physiotherapist's and doctor's clinical reasoning. Using the process of clinical reasoning as its framework, the programme will integrate the key issues central to practice in this specialist area, including: clinical assessment, communication skills, accurate diagnosis, differential diagnosis, diagnostics and prognostics, treatment interventions, management approaches, best evidence, evaluation of outcome, strategies to reduce injury time etc.

The programme will facilitate the evaluation of existing evidence through the exploration of the assessment and management of athletes. It will provide students with the opportunity to tailor their learning experience to meet their personal and professional needs, developing their their capacity for leadership within a multidisciplinary team providing clinical management in football. The programme will promote enquiry based learning through a range of strategies including case analysis and problem based learning.

The programme is written in line with the international competencies and standards established by the International Federation of Sports Physiotherapists and the Specialty Training Curriculum for Sports and Exercise Medicine from the Joint Royal Colleges of Physicians Training Board, and in collaboration with The Football Association and physiotherapists and doctors working within football and other sporting contexts.

In the first year, part-time you attend for one afternoon per week for the first ten weeks and then two three-day blocks followed by one afternoon per week in the last ten weeks. In the second year there are four three-day blocks and one afternoon per week in the final ten weeks. Full-time students attend all of the sessions in one year.

Lectures are by subject specialists, NHS clinicians, service users and carers. Many of the lectures are from visiting experts who practice and/or research in their specific field. The course is academic in nature and you are expected to use the basic content as a springboard for further self-study. All programme presentations and materials are available on Canvas (the University’s on-line learning platform) for follow up after lectures.

Course details

This programme is suitable for people currently working in the health care sector (in both the public and private sectors, including the pharmaceutical industry) who wish to improve their understanding of and skills in health economics. It may also be of interest to new graduates who wish to pursue a career in health economics and/or health services research. 

The course does not require a first degree in economics. Students who do have a first degree in economics may be interested in our MSc in Health Economics and Econometrics.

Learning and teaching

The School takes employability very seriously and as well as linking students to the central careers services, also incorporates opportunities to enhance their employment prospects, including highlighting work experience opportunities, encouraging volunteering in extra-curricular projects (such as student seminars and events) and by inviting backgrounds for students to meet.

MSc Money, Banking and Finance is the Department’s MSc programme that attracts the most students.

Studying this programmes will provide you with an excellent set of specialist and transferable skills. You will be given an advanced training in core areas of economics that are widely used in economics-based professions and you will also receive specialist training in areas relevant to the programme and take options in other areas that interest you.

Graduates from the Money, Banking and Finance MSc hold high-ranking positions in financial centres around the globe. In addition to those aiming for careers in the private sector, it attracts economists currently working in economics, treasury or finance ministries, or in central banks, and graduates preparing for such careers.

Learning and teaching

The MSc programmes provide students with an advanced training in core areas of economics, while also enabling them to specialise according to their interests. They reflect the rapid expansion of the subject in recent years, and deal with topical issues.

The aim is to train students for careers as economists or managers in commerce, industry, banking, financial services or the public sector.

Module assignments, and in particular the dissertation, provide an initial training in the kind of skills needed for the independent investigations which are likely to be important in professional careers.
