Delivery and assessment

A blended learning approach is taken towards the delivery of both the PG Cert and the MA, comprising of online teaching and learning activities and face-to-face workshop days.
- For the PG Cert, face-to-face input will take place at workshop days (six in total).
- For the MA, there is initially a greater proportion of face-to-face input supported by online teaching and learning activities.
For both qualifications, you’ll engage in a range of teaching and learning methods. These will include lectures, online activities, case study investigations, simulation exercises or role plays, interactive or group learning, and real-life practice and application of skills through University links and school partners.
Assessment methods are varied and accommodate a variety of learning styles and preferences. These include written assignments such as case studies or enquiry-based reports, and reflective and skills-based assessments including one-to-one guidance sessions and group work.

Your future career

The course aims to equip you with attributes that are highly sought after by employers within the career development and employability sector. On completion, you should be able to reflect upon practice and performance, and to identify continuing professional development (CPD) and personal development needs, allowing you to adapt and respond to the contextual needs of clients, employers, and the sector.

This MA meets international and national quality benchmarks and is suitable for you if you have either a personal or professional interest in career development/coaching. We offer the MA full-time, or you can choose to complete the programme part-time at different levels.

You’ll be encouraged to directly connect your learning to your personal and continuing professional development. Each module on the course is taught through a mix of workshopbased (usually two days) and distance learning. You can choose from two to six workshops a year, depending on your preferred study route.

While our academic admissions criteria ask for a 2:ii undergraduate degree, we would welcome and encourage you to apply if you have alternative qualifications or experience. The skills you develop on the course will support current or future employment in career coaching and talent management, among other vocational roles.

Areas of Study

There are two pathways available for both full and part-time students within the MA in Career Development and Coaching Studies: Route A and Route B. It is not necessary to finalise preferred route at the time of application as this can be confirmed later.

Route A
Route A consists of 6 x 20 credit modules and a 60 credit Dissertation module (15,000 words). It provides a full training for working as a career development professional.

Route B
Route B consists of 3 x 20 credit modules, a 100 credit Dissertation module (25,000 words) and 1 x 20 credit module from the list of Route B options below. It is designed for individuals with some experience of career development support or those wishing to pursue independent research in the field of career development and coaching studies.

The Postgraduate Diploma provides a thorough training for today's career development professional. It is approved by the Career Development Institute (CDI) as meeting the qualification requirement for the UK Register of Career Development Professionals. The course consists of six 20 credit modules.

Attendance

This part-time PG Diploma can be completed over a period of between 14 and 36 months. A flexible approach is adopted to enable attendance if you are based overseas and/or with full-time work or other responsibilities. Each 20 credit module is taught via a blend of workshop-based and distance-learning. The workshops take place at the University of Warwick, usually over two days (key dates). You will start with the Career Development Theories module and attend between two and six workshops per year depending on how quickly you wish to move through the course.

You will be taught by members of iCeGS, who are experts in the area of career guidance. You will also have access to the iCeGS library and archive of career literature and research, as well as extra-curricular activities such as the iCeGS annual lecture, research seminars and workshops.

Throughout the course you will gather the necessary evidence for your QCD portfolio with support from our teaching team.

To gain your QCD, you are required to undertake 20 days of work-based placements. You may already be based in a suitable workplace, but if you wish to explore a different setting or don’t currently have access to one, we will support you to find a suitable work placement. Our teaching team have extensive networks of career development providers, so you may have access to placements in settings such as schools, colleges, universities, research centres, and large organisations who employ career development practitioners in a range of roles, including human resources and talent management.

This MRes study aims to understand how adults in mid-life experience the relationship between their work and their health. This is with a particular focus on how they see their careers developing in future and how this relates to their health and well-being status.

Increasing life spans, economic pressures, and advancing or flexible retirement age mean that individuals may be working for longer in their lives. Older workers may have health conditions to manage. Employment may be detrimental to mental or physical health, or it may help to promote well-being and extend functional independence. This is dependent on a variety of factors including job characteristics and the relationship between the individual and work. Thus, the orientation to their career that adults adopt in mid-life may have far-reaching impacts on their health trajectories. This mixed methods study seeks to explore those orientations and their health implications as understood by the workers themselves.

The literature review will explore:

• Relevant conceptualisation and measurement of health and well-being

• Well-being and life-span development

• Career development in mid to late adulthood, including the literature on ‘third age’ guidance

• Contemporary legal, economic, and socio-political factors that are extending working life, and increasing pressures on older workers.

The empirical study will be a mixed methods design, combining in-depth qualitative research interviews, followed by a survey generating quantitative evidence. The survey will combine use of a validated well-being measure with a bespoke survey design informed by the literature review and the interviews.

Our part-time programme is taught via 5-day modules (Monday to Friday) on campus at Bath compressed into 2 years with the flexibility to extend and complete in up to a maximum of 5 years. The Executive Bath MBA has the same course content as the full time programme and is mostly taught via 5-day modules (Monday to Friday) on campus at Bath. Following the part-time route, candidates take the equivalent of 12 weeks of study on campus at Bath to cover Stages 1 and 2. They then have up to 5 months to complete their 'final project or dissertation' at Stage 3. In terms of time ‘out of the office’ we normally advise that prospective students should factor 70 days in total; to include all taught modules on campus, syndicated or peer learning groups, project workshops and an allocation for the 4 exams associated with the programme. Attendance on campus is not normally required during the final stage of the programme.

The MSc Career Coaching programme has been designed to reflect the growing interest in career coaching by individuals seeking to manage their career development more effectively; and by organisations who want to develop the talent and resilience of their staff. This level of interest is reflected in the progression pathway for talent management that features in the National Occupation Standards (NOS) for Career Development set by the Career Development Institute (CDI). The course will therefore appeal to UK and international students who are existing human service professionals who want to develop their career coaching skills; those who are considering entering the role; and existing career coaches who are seeking a course that is professionally accredited by the CDI (subject to approval).

The MSc Career Coaching with Professional Experience, is an extended full-time Masters programme with a substantive professional experience component. Within the professional experience modules, students have the option of undertaking an internship with a host organisation or, alternatively, campus-based professional experience. Internships are subject to a competitive application and selection process and the host organisation may include the University.

Internships may be paid or unpaid, and this will depend on what is being offered and agreed with the host organisation. The MA enables the you to make a distinctive contribution to higher education careers work through independent research. It is approved by the Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services (AGCAS) and designed and taught in partnership with this professional body. It is also approved by the Career Development Institute (CDI) as meeting the qualification requirement for the UK Register of Career Development Professionals.

Areas of Study

There are two pathways available within the MA in Career Education, Information and Guidance in Higher Education: Route A and Route B. It is not necessary to finalise preferred route at the time of application as this can be confirmed later. Both pathways enable direct entry to the MA.

Route A
Route A includes the 3 x core 20 credit modules (including the Research Project module), a choice of 3 x 20 credit optional modules from the table below and a 60 credit module completed via a 15,000 word Dissertation (A). All participants start with the core modules: Career Development Theories and the next available Challenges of Careers Work in Higher Education module. These modules run twice a year (key dates) and further details are available in AGCAS events calendar).

Route B
Route B includes the 3 x core 20 credit modules detailed below (including the Research Project module), a choice of 1 x 20 credit module, and a 100 credit module completed via a 25,000 word Dissertation (B). This route is particularly suitable if you have a relevant prior qualification and experience.

Support and supervision

There is significant support available through the extended course team consisting of Phil McCash (Warwick), Gill Frigerio (Warwick), Sharon West (Warwick), Linda Byrne (AGCAS), Jan Cornish (AGCAS) and a large group of highly experienced AGCAS Trainers and Mentors. Dissertation students are allocated a dissertation supervisor. Supervision is provided to assist you with undertaking an initial literature review, constructing research questions and designing a methodology. There is considerable experience available within the course team and most topics connected with higher education careers work can be pursued.

Overseas applicants

Part-time international and EU applicants are welcomed. We have received successful applications from a range of countries including the UK, Ireland, Norway, France, Germany, Romania, Slovenia, USA, China and Australia. Full-time applicants are advised to consider our MA Career Development and Coaching Studies (PL 561).

Former students have gone on to publish and disseminate their work in a range of academic and professional contexts. Our graduates occupy a range of roles in higher education careers work including management, education and career coaching. The Media and Development MA is an interdisciplinary course that teaches main theories, concepts, case studies and practical media skills around the theme of media and development and its implications for less developed countries. The course will provide you with a unique blend of theory and practice teaching, aimed at deepening your knowledge of the history of communications within the development process of emerging economies. It will critically evaluate the impact of international and regional institutions from a critical political economic perspective. Teaching by academic staff, guest lecturers and other carefully selected staff from development organisations will provide you with an overview of the policies, actions and impact of state and non-state institutions within the area of communication media and development.

A distinctive feature is its emphasis on the practical role of communication media in development. You will participate in media production workshops and take part in our internship programme, offered in partnership with media and development organisations in London. As part of the work experience module, students participate in an extensive NGOs and media seminar series featuring experts and panel discussions. The work placement programme is in line with the University of Westminster’s strategy of nurturing of the critical practitioner.

The course team is led by Dr Winston Mano and includes Professor Daya Thussu, Professor Christian Fuchs, Professor David Gauntlett, Professor Naomi Sakr, Dr Anthony McNicholas, Dr Xin Xin, Dr Anastasia Kavada, Dr Maria Michalis, Dr Roza Tsagarousianou, Dr Tarik Sabry, Paul Majendie, Geoffrey Davies and Michaela O’Brien. Visiting Lecturers include Jackie Davies, founder and Director of the Communication and Development Network (C4D) (http://www.c4d.org), a community of professionals working in communication for development. As a peer network the C4D Network is aimed at communication for development practitioners plus allied development workers, donors, academics and communication experts from the BBC, UN and major development organisations. The joining criterion is an engagement in communication for development - either professionally or through academia. Students on the Media and Development MA have the option to join the C4D network and each can do a fellowship/internship with the network during the course.

Career path

Graduates apply for posts in development organisations based in London such as OneWorld, Oxfam, Save the Children, Red Cross, ActionAid, Panos, DfiD, Intermedia, BBC, Institute of War and Peace, Christian Aid and War on Want. Some students were able to build on knowledge, skills and their background in working for governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental organisations (in Romania, Pakistan and India) and a range of international business organisations, including the BBC. The course also prepares students for further studies and for a higher degree, e.g., a PhD. Some students apply for PhD Scholarships advertised by the Faculty of Media, Arts and Design and they were all encouraged to join the Communication for Development Network (C4D) which meets once a month in London.

We are aware that the range of skills needed is exceptionally diffuse, and that students on the course hope to develop careers in a variety of fields in many different countries. We are also aware that we are preparing you for careers in a rapidly changing job market and the structure of the course allows you take advantage of change, and not to be its victim. It, therefore, would be misleading and unhelpful to place too much emphasis on acquiring a precise set of skills drawn from one part of the media and development sector. Finally, with a view to your professional development planning, the course is designed to give you a wide-ranging and critical knowledge of the development industry that you plan to enter.

Sustainable development, or development that balances economic, social, and environmental aspects, is one of the greatest challenges of our time, and Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) can be powerful tools in helping to achieve this.

The ICT for Development (ICT4D) specialism is a strand within the established and highly successful MSc Practising Sustainable Development. It is offered jointly by the Politics, Development and Sustainability (PDS) Group and the UNESCO Chair/Centre in ICT4D at Royal Holloway, University of London.

This ICT4D Masters strand takes a global perspective on sustainable development and the role of ICTs; placed at the interface of research and practice, it is designed for those who want to launch or further their careers as development practitioners or scholars. It combines cutting-edge teaching on ICT4D with rigorous training in the broader field of sustainable development, to provide a well-rounded perspective on current and future development challenges. This degree extends knowledge, develops key skills and optimises career prospects.

The course is also offered at Postgraduate Diploma level for those who do not have the academic background necessary to begin an advanced Master’s degree. The structure of the Diploma is identical except that you will not write a dissertation. If you are successful on the Diploma you may transfer to the MSc, subject to academic approval.

Department research and industry highlights

The UNESCO Chair/Centre in ICT4D at Royal Holloway is an interdisciplinary centre involving staff in Geography, Management, Computer Science and Earth Sciences. One of the world leaders in its field, with 17 affiliated staff and 18 PhD students, it is a vibrant research community embedded in both the College and the international ICT4D Collective of ICT4D practitioners. It has excellent links with NGOs, businesses and international organisations. Friendly and diverse, it is an exciting place to study and network with other ICT4D experts.

The Politics, Development and Sustainability (PDS) group consists of over 20 research-active staff, 35 PhD students and 50 Master’s students on four MSc programmes. We are committed to conducting collaborative research which seeks to understand and contribute to addressing problems of social inequality, environmental destruction and injustice. The breadth of its members’ research places it in an ideal position to contribute to theoretical and policy debates on key challenges facing Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean today.

Course content and structure

The course is divided into three compulsory elements; theory, policy and practice; research training; and a dissertation. Students studying for the Postgraduate Diploma do not undertake the dissertation.

Core course units:
Sustainability, Development and Governance
This course will equip students with a detailed understanding of the development of sustainable development as a discourse. Students will explore key sustainability issues such as climate change, globalisation, and human responses with an emphasis on the emergence of environmental governance as a means to pursue sustainability.

Technology and Development
This course provides you with an introduction to the role of technology in development, focusing particularly on mobile phone and computer technologies. The course combines an understanding of key theoretical debates and how technologies have been applied in diverse sectors such as health and education. The course also includes training in the use of GIS (geographical information systems) within a development context.

ICT4D
This course gives you the opportunity to develop deeper understandings of cutting-edge applications of ICT4D research and practice. Topics covered include environmental change and Green ICT, open development and subversive forms of technology use, and logics of inclusion and exclusion in ICT programmes. You will also examine project planning, monitoring and evaluation in the field of ICT4D.

Participatory Research
This course combines detailed understanding of the theoretical underpinnings of participatory research and methods with practical experience of using different participatory research techniques. These include participatory diagramming, participatory video and participatory environmental monitoring.

Research Training
You will be provided with training in a range of methods to enable you to plan, carry out and complete a piece of research. There are three modules in this element:
- Social Research Methods Training - provides a range of social science methods for field research and analysis.
- Quantitative Methods for Graduates - provides basic statistical concepts and procedures used in empirical research.
- Development and Environment Research Training - provides guidance for planning, developing and undertaking research in a development and environment context.

Dissertation (MSc only)
The dissertation is of between 12,000 and 15,000 words, on a topic of your choice which has been approved by the supervisor. It requires both secondary and primary research, and the demonstration of originality in integrating theoretical and practical research methods in tackling a particular problem. You will be encouraged to carry out your dissertation in collaboration with an organisation in the field of development and environment.

Community Volunteer Project
You will undertake an independent volunteer project which will give you practical experience in gaining sustainability related work experience in a non-for profit organisation. The project will enhance your employability whilst and provide an opportunity to gain practical experience of third sector organisational objectives, cultures and practices.

Elective course units:
Sustainability, Development and Society
You will develop a detailed understanding of key social / environmental relationships incorporating contemporary issues in the geographies of sustainability. These will include 'risk society', sustainable cities, and the impacts of corporate sector activities on the environment. You will also understand the challenges to sustainable development at household and community levels, with a focus on community-based approaches to sustainable development.

Business Ethics and Enterprise
The aim of the course is to equip students with the moral frameworks and critical abilities necessary to understand the role of business in society from an ethical perspective. The course will cover different types of business including large publicly traded multinationals, small and medium sized enterprises, social enterprises and family firms. Students will be expected to understand the different issues in these organizational types and to articulate moral arguments from a range of different perspectives.

International Sustainability Management
This course provides participants with an understanding of how Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) informs sustainability management issues in large, transnational organisations. It will focus on issues such as consumption and sustainability as dichotomised between the apparently incompatible tensions of economic and environmental interests.

Other courses Geopolitics and Security / PIR / Management / Computer Science

On completion of the course graduates will have:
- an understanding at an advanced level of the relationships between, and complexities of, social, economic, political and environmental aspects of sustainable development and ICT4D

- an understanding at an advanced level of how the key issues in sustainable development theory and ICT4D influence policy and impact on practice

- the ability to critically analyse complex or contradictory areas of knowledge in aspects of sustainable development.

Assessment

Assessment is carried out by a variety of methods including coursework and a dissertation.

Employability & career opportunities

Past students of the MSc Practising Sustainable Development are now employed by international development and/or environment agencies, national government in their countries, national programmes and implementing agencies, higher education institutions, consultancies, private sector businesses, social enterprises and NGOs; as environmental and development policy-makers, managers, workers, activists, teachers and researchers. Many of our alumni are also currently undertaking doctoral programmes in the UK and abroad.

This MSc offers a critical approach to 'people-centred' development, addressing the challenges for equitable citizenship in the context of social diversity and globalisation, particularly in urban contexts. Participants engage in a critical analysis of the theory and practice of social development alongside gaining the skills required to be a reflective social development practitioner.

About this degree

The programme objectives are to give participants a solid grounding in social analysis skills and perspectives, rooted in social theory around identity, inequality, and social change processes. Students learn how development interventions can best support the citizenship claims of diverse groups of women and men, and girls and boys living in the Global South, and consider the role of the social development practitioner in this endeavour.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of three core modules (90 credits), either one or two optional modules (totalling 30 credits) and a dissertation (60 credits).

A Postgraduate Diploma (full-time nine months) is offered, comprising three core modules (90 credits) and one or two optional modules (30 credits).

Dissertation/report

All students undertake an independent research project related to the main themes of the programme, culminating in a dissertation report of 10,000 words (60 credits). Topics may be chosen to enhance career development or for their inherent interest.

Teaching and learning

The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars, practical classroom exercises, and fieldwork within the UK and abroad. Student performance is assessed through coursework, examinations, and a dissertation report as well as an assessment of practical work, including the international fieldwork group report.

Fieldwork

The programme incorporates group fieldwork in London and in a selected country of the Global South.

The cost of flights, visas, necessary vaccinations, accommodation, and fieldwork-related travel and facilitations costs, are incorporated within the programme fees. Meals and other expenditure must be covered by the student.

Candidates for the MSc in Social Development Practice may be eligible for the Swarovski Foundation scholarship. Details of this scholarship will be published on The Bartlett Development Planning Unit website in autumn 2017.

The practice-based components of the programme also provide students with the opportunity to network with organisations and professionals working in the social development sector.
