The MSc Career Coaching programme has been designed to reflect the growing interest in career coaching by individuals seeking to manage their career development more effectively; and by organisations who want to develop the talent and resilience of their staff. This level of interest is reflected in the progression pathway for talent management that features in the National Occupation Standards (NOS) for Career Development set by the Career Development Institute (CDI). The course will therefore appeal to UK and international students who are existing human service professionals who want to develop their career coaching skills; those who are considering entering the role; and existing career coaches who are seeking a course that is professionally accredited by the CDI (subject to approval).

The MSc Career Coaching with Professional Experience, is an extended full-time Masters programme with a substantive professional experience component. Within the professional experience modules, students have the option of undertaking an internship with a host organisation or, alternatively, campus-based professional experience. Internships are subject to a competitive application and selection process and the host organisation may include the University.

Internships may be paid or unpaid, and this will depend on what is being offered and agreed with the host organisation. Students who do not wish to undertake an internship or are not successful in securing an internship will undertake campus-based professional experience, which will deliver similar learning outcomes through supervised projects and activities designed to offer students the opportunity to integrate theory with an understanding of professional practice.

WHY CHOOSE THIS COURSE?

The course has a number of innovatory features appealing to both home and international students. Firstly, its blended learning approach that takes advantage of the latest development in learning technologies can offer flexible routes for those wishing to combine work and study. Secondly, it will include international theories and models to ensure the course has global relevance. - Research Project
This project aims to enable students to demonstrate the skills necessary to produce a scholarly, in-depth, empirical research study, resource, or report.

- Research Methods
This module will develop your ability to design and statistically analyse experimental, quasi-experimental and non-experimental quantitative studies. It will allow you to appreciate the strengths and limitations of the different quantitative and qualitative research designs used in coaching and sport, health and exercise science; and synthesize knowledge and competencies gained during taught modules to produce a scholarly, in-depth critical review and proposal for a research study.

- Effective Coaching
You will develop an advanced understanding of critical self-reflective skills through the use of video analysis, which includes identifying key coaching styles, behaviours and feedback techniques required in advanced coaching situations. In addition, you will develop an in depth understanding of the interdisciplinary approaches that contribute to the coaching process including your ability to recognise and develop current coaching practice and coaching philosophies.

This modules provides an opportunity for students to observe and participate in work-based professional environments, including identifying a work problem for you to overcome, which will enhance your professional and vocational learning and inform your own everyday practice. As part of your studies you will critically reflect on your learning throughout the work placement. You will, together with the module team, identify an organisation or organisations that are relevant to your field of study and that will be able to provide 140 hours of work experience.

- Developing Expertise in Sport
This module aims to enable you to develop a systematic knowledge and critical understanding of how coaches develop and maintain expertise in sport and the ability to critically appraise coaching practice in the context of current approaches to skill development

- High Performance Environment
This module focuses on developing a multi-disciplinary perspective of factors that act upon the elite athlete and how these contribute to the development of elite performance. You will analyse how the coach, psychologist, conditioning coach, medical staff and nutritionist assist and complement each other in producing a high performance environment. The management of the performance environment will be discussed and the many issues that underpin successful implementation of elite sport science support will also be analysed.

- Strength and Conditioning
At the end of this module you will have developed your knowledge and critical understanding of concepts and theories regarding strength and conditioning. You will also have developed the ability to implement effective strength and conditioning programmes into a range of performance environments. The above have been closely linked to the professional standards required for accreditation by both the NSCA and the UKSCA.

- Movement Analysis
This module aims to develop your awareness of the analysis of sports performance, with particular emphasis on technique analysis and notation analysis. The use of systematic observation techniques in the analysis of sports performance will also be considered.

Learning and teaching methods

Teaching methods include lectures, video analysis, seminars and workshops, some of which will be student-led. Lectures will be held predominately held on a Monday between 2pm-8pm and /or a Tuesday depending on your module choice. A draft timetable can be requested from the course leader Melanie Tuckwell

The module will examine different research traditions and provide students with an opportunity to critique existing empirical material. Students will explore key theoretical issues such as interview techniques; designing of quantitative questionnaires; data analysis (both quantitative and qualitative) and the development and completion of ethics forms. Students will also examine the process of data collection; management; interpretation; analysis and presentation through the use of case studies.

Advanced Coaching Theory 

In this module students will examine the principles of the reflective practice in coaching and how reflection can take on different forms. Students will be required to reflect upon their own coaching practice and this process will be used to critique the role of pedagogy in coaching practice. The module will introduce students to the holistic nature of coaching. Students will also explore the notion of expertise in coaching and how expertise in developed in both coaching and other domains.

Integrated Coaching 

This module introduces students to the concept of player and participant development from a multi-disciplinary standpoint (a bio-psycho-social approach). It analyses and evaluates the role of sports science within coaching and will critique existing models of player development. Students will be expected to critique the current theory and consider their own personal practice in this regard. 

Students will engage with the multi-disciplinary nature of coaching and performance and will use player to data to produce an applied development strategy using case studies designed to develop an understanding of the difficulties involved in player development.

The PGA, on behalf of the sport of golf, leads on the development of coach education and training. A full review of the existing coach education structure, following guidance from the quality standards of the UK Coaching Certificate, has lead to the establishment of a new, coach-centred education system that meets the needs of coaches and, ultimately, players. 

This exciting and innovative pathway begins with the Level 1 and 2 coaching qualifications; progresses through the Foundation Degree in Professional Golf or the Applied Golf Management Studies Degree towards the PGA Level 3 qualification (incorporating the Advanced Certificate in Golf Coaching); leading through the Post Graduate Diploma in Coaching to the Level 4 qualification; with the potential to culminate in a full Masters Degree in coaching following completion of a relevant thesis.

A flexible approach to learning and assessment will characterise this degree. The PGDip Elite Coaching Practice is a dynamic course that aims to develop your critical understanding of the theories and practice of Sports Coaching. The UK Coaching Framework is well underway and the predominant aim of this strategy is to become the number one coaching system in the World by 2016. One feature of the implementation plan is the development of the UK Coaching Certificate. In order to achieve the high standards expected of such a system, it will require highly skilled and knowledgeable individuals to develop it over the next 5-6 years. Module Details

This final Master’s stage of the programme includes two days of research methods training held at the University of Portsmouth to enable you to develop a research proposal as the basis for completing your final research-based investigative project/dissertation. The unit in research methods will specifically cover the theory and application of research methodologies and consider concepts and qualitative methods and their use in research.

Programme Assessment

The course takes a work-based learning approach which allows you to apply this knowledge and theory to your workplace. This approach means you produce current and applied work-based assignments for assessment.

This programme is assessed, quality assured and awarded by the University of Portsmouth whilst TPC's world-class trainers and facilitators deliver course content and work with you to develop your knowledge and understanding of coaching.

Assessment consists of a 3,000 word research proposal leading to a 12,000 word Investigative Project/Dissertation allowing you to pursue a topic of personal interest which may directly relate to future employment, your organisation or to opportunities for future employment.

Student Destinations

This course is ideal if you are seeking to use a coaching approach in a line management role, looking to build a coaching culture within your organisation to enhance performance or even embark on a second career as a professional freelance coach. With an active passion for coaching, this course will allow you to focus on specific areas that interest you. You will be able to direct your learning towards your chosen coaching career goal from the very beginning, matching learning and assessment to the demands of your coaching. Through working with staff, participants and your peers, you will explore, bring structure and add depth to your existing knowledge and skills.

Making and defending your own professional judgements will enable you to plan, deliver and evaluate long term coaching programmes that consider the developmental needs of your participants.

Through the course you will compare, contrast and integrate theories and ideas from a range of disciplines such as talent development, sport psychology, physiology and expertise with your own ideas and practice.

Mature Applicants

Our University welcomes applications from mature applicants who demonstrate academic potential. We usually require some evidence of recent academic study, for example completion of an access course, however recent relevant work experience may also be considered. Please note that for some of our professional courses all applicants will need to meet the specified entry criteria and in these cases work experience cannot be considered in lieu.

You will graduate with an in-depth knowledge of coaching theory and practice, allowing you to work for a range of clients around the world. You could expect to excel in and apply for positions in community coaching, coaching in either private or publicly funded clubs and companies or governing bodies. With the opportunity to focus on research you will be well placed to progress into higher qualification or industry research roles.

Gareth's experience as a coach and performance analyst is truly impressive; he has worked with the Rugby Football League and British Rowing as well as spending time at a series of professional football clubs, most recently the academy at Leeds United. Gareth has also consulted with the Football Association on the development of several coach education courses.
