The role of career guidance in our rapidly-changing economy and labour market has never been more important. The aim of this course is to provide you with opportunities to develop the relevant skills, knowledge and experience needed for offering career guidance. This course is fully accredited by the Institute of Career Guidance, and successful completion of the Diploma also gives the QCG. Course exemption

Students may be granted exemption from courses if they have taken similar or equivalent courses in their postgraduate studies with satisfactory performance at least a “B” grade or above. Supporting documents such as academic transcripts, course syllabus must be provided. Maximum of six units may be granted. Upon exemption from courses, students will be required to replace the exempted courses with electives of equal units.

Accountancy at the master's level replaces the rudiments of financial management with real hands-on experience. The Master of Accountancy degree program provides students with a greater understanding of accounting and business than is possible in an undergraduate program.

Purpose

The program prepares students for careers as professional accountants in financial institutions, government, industry, nonprofit organizations and public practice.

Format

Graduates are prepared to research various databases related to troublesome accounting problems, and to exercise judgment in making accounting-related decisions by drawing on their integrated, comprehensive body of accounting knowledge and experience—what all masters have in common.

Students must take a minimum of 30 hours of graduate courses, including a minimum of 21 hours of accounting courses as listed below. Up to nine elective hours, as approved by an advisor, may be chosen from 500-level courses and must be approved by the coordinator of the MAcc program. We will prepare you for the role of Specialist Community Public Health Nurse within Sexual Health Advising, allowing you to register with the NMC. You'll develop specialist knowledge and skills in aspects such as health assessment, clinical care and case management.

This course contains an even spread of theory and practice, which is facilitated by practice experience in an area specific to Sexual Health Advising. You can also take opportunities to gain alternative practice experience in other relevant settings during the course.

Graduate destinations

You will be able to work as a Sexual Health Advisor and eligible for registration on the NMC Nursing register in your named pathway. Additionally, if you opt to study NMLB 9001, you can apply to record this qualification as a V100 Community Practitioner Nurse Prescriber.

Alternatively, you may wish to continue onto a Masters Degree. We recommend the MSc Specialist Community Public Health Nursing Practice, though you might also look at an MSc in Advanced Practice in Health and Social Care, Nursing or Primary Health Care.

Other admission requirements

You will be interviewed for selection for this programme. The interview panel may include trust staff, employers, mentors/practice teachers and university staff. During the interview you will be offered advice on the suitability of the award dependent on factors such as recency of prior learning, and your personal and professional development needs.

Placements

- Time spent on placement:
During the course you will spend 50% of your time involved in academic study and 50% in clinical practice. A clinical practice placement allows you to put theory into practice by working with a range of health professionals in clinical situations to develop the skills, knowledge and experience required to become a competent nurse. Although sometimes challenging, practice learning is one of the most interesting and exciting aspects of learning to be a nurse.

- Clinical settings:
At LSBU, you will experience a variety of clinical settings such as NHS acute Trusts, community placements, independent sector and voluntary sector organisations.

If you are based at our Southwark campus you are able to experience placements at Guy's Hospital, St Thomas' Hospital, University College London Hospital, Newham University Hospital and Whipps Cross University Hospital. You will also undertake a placement in the community.

If you are based at our Havering campus you are able to experience placements at Newham University Hospital, Whipps Cross University Hospital, King George Hospital and Queen's Hospital; along with a placement within the community.

- Structure of placements:
Placements are spread over the two years:

Your first clinical placements are designed to introduce you to working in a professional setting and to develop essential care and basic assessment skills, infection control and learn about safeguarding vulnerable people.

You will then begin to take on more responsibility, progressing your clinical reasoning skills and begin to look small groups of patients making confident, proactive decision for their health management with little supervision.

You will also have one four week elective placement in which you can choose a speciality (e.g. working with Clinical Nurse Specialists, specialist services or independent and 3rd sector providers), or a different context of care (e.g. prison, private health care facility, social care, charity, hospice etc.), or a lived experience of a certain condition (e.g. charity work, carer shadowing, etc.)

- Adult Nursing skills laboratories
We have two adult nursing skills laboratories at our Southwark campus and three at our Havering campus. Our nursing skills labs; set up like hospital wards are used by all student nurses and midwives throughout their courses. They learn manual handling and basic life support skills and skills that are specific to their field of nursing or midwifery.

- SimMan
The nursing wards have simulator mannequins: SimMan, SimBaby and SimMom. These life-size mannequins are computer controlled and can be programmed with various clinical conditions. These are operated by a computer in real-time and so respond to a student's actions. They also allow students to see the outcome of specific interventions in certain scenarios, which could make the patient better or deteriorate quite quickly.

The mannequins are used to teach students how to recognise clinical signs, and to also associate those clinical signs with the actions they are taking to care for the patient. SimMan can be male or converted to female with fully accurate anatomy and can breathe, blink, sweat, speak and groan in pain as well as have a pulse. Who is it for?

The Master of Laws postgraduate course is for students who are looking to enhance their legal careers or shift focus to a new area of law. The flexibility of the programme and the 50+ modules on offer means that you can use the course to define your own Master of Laws postgraduate experience.

Our students come from a wide range of backgrounds. Some have just completed undergraduate degrees while others have experience in private practice at law firms or as in-house counsel. We also attract students who have engaged in non-legal work in sectors including finance and energy, public service and NGOs.

Objectives

The Master of Laws LLM at City has a practical, global focus designed to deepen your knowledge and accelerate your career.

The programme has been structured to showcase the most current legal debates, and to expose you to professional practitioners and leading academics. It will give you the skills to tackle complex legal problems within your chosen subjects while also offering a wealth of opportunities including pro bono clinics, guest lectures, recruitment fairs and internships.

The Master of Laws offers extensive choice when it comes to what you learn. Placements

In 2012 City University London founded a legal advice clinic focusing on advising start-ups in London’s Silicon Roundabout. The clinic, called Start-Ed, is the first of its kind in the country and has won many awards and grants. Under supervision from a solicitor, you can gain experience assisting real clients that include tech start-ups and meet the people behind London’s most exciting new business ideas.

Academic facilities

The LLM course is primarily taught at Gray’s Inn Place campus with some modules elsewhere. Here you will find the Atkin Building which houses a Law student common room and a large lecture theatre. There is also a Law common room at Northampton Square.

As a City Law School student you will benefit from everything the Institution has to offer including the Learning Success department and Lawbore, an online resource designed to help you find the information you need for the course modules. All course modules have online depositories through Moodle.

The City Law School has its own dedicated administration team and you also have access to two legal libraries, one at the Gray’s Inn campus and the other based on site at our Northampton Square campus.

As part of the University of London you can also become a member of Senate House Library for free with your student ID card. Our excellent location in London puts us within walking distance of the British Library which has a collection of over 150 million items and a extensive law resources.

Teaching and learning

Assessment will draw on a range of approaches which include written coursework, presentations, skills work, in-class tests, projects and a dissertation. The majority of modules will be assessed on the basis of written coursework of 5,000-5,500 words.

The 30-credit dissertation module will involve the submission of a dissertation of 10,000 words on a subject agreed with your supervisor/Programme Director. If you decide to opt for the 60-credit dissertation instead, you will need to submit a dissertation of 20,000 words on a subject agreed with your supervisor/Programme Director.

Most modules have a single combined assessment with 100% weighting but there are some where there is more than one assessment and the weighting for each will be 50%.

You have the option of completing formative coursework in each module. The formative assessment will give you an opportunity to understand and appreciate the academic levels expected. At different stages of the programme, you will have the opportunity to develop and demonstrate legal research, quantitative, cognitive and other skills in addition to your knowledge and understanding of the subjects.

Placements

Half of your time as a student will be spent gaining practice experience through clinical placements and simulated practice. Each placement provides you with educational opportunities to develop your professional skills and allows students to explore the journeys of service users including older people, the severely ill, those in recovery and those detained in secure (forensic) settings. The majority of placements are with the East London NHS Foundation Trust which includes the boroughs of Newham, City & Hackney and Tower Hamlets. There are also opportunities for a 2 week elective placement outside the Trust.

Support in Practice

Students are supported in practice by practice experience staff who liaise between the Institution and the Trust, Mentors and Link Lecturers. At City we also use an innovative method of group work to support students and help them to develop the ability to understand and process the emotional impact of working in mental health.

Academic facilities

Our specialist Clinical Skills Centre at City’s Northampton Square campus has been specially designed for teaching and reflects clinical environments and working wards, so you can familiarise yourself with equipment and practices before commencing your placement. Simulated practice enables you to practise your skills in a safe environment, in preparation for transferring these skills to a 'real life' setting.

Teaching and learning

The teaching on the Mental Health Nursing course includes lecture sessions, workshops, small group activities and discussions and whole class discussion.

We are also using an innovative method of group work to support students and help them to develop the ability to understand and process the emotional impact of working in mental health.

Assessment

Assessments are varied to meet the practice and academic challenges of the Postgraduate Diploma, while recognising the need for motivating, realistic and relevant activity. The practice element is assessed by the development of a record of achievement in practice and Objective Structured Clinical Examinations. Modules are also assessed through essays or seminars.

Your learning will draw on areas including nursing, psychology, sociology and biology in order for you to develop your communication and evidence based clinical skills.

Our curriculum focuses on relationship centred care and will support you to develop effective working relationships with patients, service users, families and professional colleagues.

On successful graduation you will gain registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), which provides an internationally-recognised professional qualification enabling you to practice in the UK and overseas. Some countries require additional local registration.

Individualized curriculum
Students in the Master of Liberal Arts degree program have the rare opportunity to develop their own concentration in the liberal arts from courses across the University. As an MLA student, you will design an individualized curriculum of nine graduate-level courses that center on a particular theme that interests you, culminating in an individual capstone project. The capstone is a large-scale academic project of your own choosing, created with the guidance of your professors and advisors. Previous capstones include memoirs, poetry cycles and research papers. The process of developing your capstone both tests and celebrates your education at Penn, and can be used to demonstrate the value of your time here to employers or graduate schools.

The range of courses available means you can construct a course of study at the precise nexus of your interests, or sample several different fields before settling on an ongoing focus. Moreover, the process itself of curating your own curriculum is one of the most valuable aspects of the MLA program. MLA course requirements and Proseminars
Your Master of Liberal Arts degree curriculum will consist of nine graduate-level courses. At least seven of these courses must be taken in the School of Arts and Sciences. Your curriculum may include up to two classes from other Schools in the University, such as the Annenberg School for Communication, the Graduate School of Education and the School of Social Policy & Practice.

Of the nine courses in your individualized curriculum, one to three of them must be MLA Proseminars. A Proseminar is a small, intensive class that asks you to integrate research, writing, discussion and other methods of inquiry. The small class size fosters thoughtful conversation and debate, and provides a powerful environment for intellectual growth. We offer multiple Proseminars each semester, and the topics change every semester as well.

The course is designed to meet the demand from firms for highly-skilled legal and GRC professionals (covering Anti-Money Laundering/Counter-Terrorist Financing, Regulatory Compliance, Risk and Legal areas). Who should apply?

Applicants are required to hold the International Compliance Association (ICA) Professional Postgraduate

Diploma in Governance, Risk and Compliance.
Those who have successfully completed the diploma receive 80 M-level credits of APL for this course.

Complete in up to two years - via supported online learning

Our MSc allows you to study over 24, 18 or 15 months and no attendance is required at our centres. This flexible method of study means you can fit your study around existing work or other commitments.

Individual tutor support

Students are allocated a specific law tutor (a qualified lawyer) for each module to give them feedback on tasks and provide one-to-one support. On successful completion of each unit, you’ll receive an exemplar covering both the law and other professional skills, such as an example client letter where the task involves advising a client in writing.

From natural and human-made disasters, complex emergencies and conflict to environmental sustainability and community development, this globally-focused course explores real-world problems and how to conceptualise and address them.

You will learn how to prepare for, and respond in a crisis. You will develop the planning skills to help minimise impact and avert problems where possible. You will develop advanced knowledge, project management and analytical skills whilst developing a specialism in an area of your choice.

In the second year, for one semester, you’ll undertake an internship, study in another country or join a research group. This valuable experience will enhance your employability and further develop your theoretical and practical skills.

Teaching And Assessment

In this rapidly expanding field, you will learn through real scenarios and case studies, live research projects, developing your personal and professional responses to disaster and development challenges.

Guided through lectures, seminars and workshops by staff with vast experience in applying their expertise to current world issues, you will develop the knowledge and practical skills needed to prepare for, take action within, and recover from a crisis. You will develop research and methodology skills. You will also develop a specialism in an area such as health and wellbeing in disaster management, integrated emergency management, or exploring a specific thematic subject of your own choice. The course culminates in a Masters dissertation which can take the form of a traditional research dissertation or a work related project.

Assessment is designed to provide an authentic learning experience, using techniques and approaches common in professional practice and subject-based academic research and consultancy. We provide constructive ongoing and forward feedback to develop your understanding within and between modules.

The Advanced Practice semester will be assessed via a report and presentation about your internship, study abroad or research group activities.

Our research into Disaster and Development was ranked by judges representing UK Government Departments and Research Councils among the top 20 impact case studies within the Research Excellence Framework for contribution towards global development. DDN has been researching and facilitating the implementation of disaster risk reduction strategies to improve community resilience in some of the world’s poorest communities since 1994, working with communities in Bangladesh, Mozambique, Nepal, Pakistan and Zimbabwe.

Northumbria is one of three Europe wide groups to represent Europe and Africa in the new Global Alliance of Disaster Research Institutes, and a leading member of a new UK national research network for implementing the UK research strategy for the Sendai Framework.

Our graduates work in roles, for example, as a: Emergency Planner or Emergency Planning Manager; Disaster and Development Academic and/or Researcher; Business Contingency Manager; Humanitarian and United Nations Consultant; Deputy Head of Field Officer of the Office of the United Nations for Humanitarian Assistance (OCHA); and are often working for the Environmental Agency, Local Authorities and International, National, Regional and Local Non-Governmental Offices - often at managerial level.

A number of students who already worked in the sector have subsequently progressed to senior roles in United Nations bodies, World Vision and UK Emergency Planning. Others have successfully gone on to PhD research before pursuing a career in academia in a range of countries around the world, both so-called developed and developing.
