Health Care Management Course Structure

Lectures are interactive with students encouraged to contribute their own experience of working in health care and related settings. In addition to lectures course modules include workshops, group discussions, team exercises and student led presentations.

Full-time students will study for 13 months, attending taught modules from October to Easter (part one). Part two is undertaken through the completion of a dissertation which must be submitted by 30th September of the same year.

Part-time students will study the part one modules one day a week over two years (Typically in year one students attend October to Easter on Tuesdays and in year two October to December on Thursdays. Year two January to Easter is modular and the day of attendance will depend on the module selected.), Dissertations must be submitted by 30th September of the third year.

The MSc Health Care Management comprises two parts.

Part one is taught through five compulsory modules and a choice of two optional modules.

Part two requires completion of a dissertation - This independent directed module can only be taken on successful completion of all of the taught modules.

A particular feature of the curriculum is its focus on policy, management and collaborative working structures in the context of regulation, evaluation and accountability frameworks for service delivery.

The course is designed to meet the needs of those working in health and welfare services as practitioners, managers or administrators.

The student group is therefore multidisciplinary, and most course members combine study with full-time work. The course is also suitable for graduates with a research interest in the changing nature of health and social care in the new mixed economy of welfare.

The course has recently been re-validated and re-focused. It now offers increased opportunities for you to combine your study of health and social policy with specialist modules in evaluation, management, social work practice, regeneration or public health.

Your learning is structured around weekly contact time with the teaching team and is complemented by your independent work based on guidance supplied in lectures, group work, and interactive workshops. Participants come from a wide range of organisations and backgrounds, and this facilitates learning with and from other managers. The content allows you to explore a number of management areas depending on your development needs and role in the organisation. You may be a first line manager such as a team leader or you may be in a more senior role but may not previously have undertaken a formal management development programme.

The programme equips you to manage effectively within your organisation and offers you the opportunity to further your career in a management field. How you will be taught

The teaching approach is one of blended learning with face to face teaching (lectures, group work, case discussions, workshops, simulation exercises, quizzes) blended with online activities, case based studies and workplace assessment. Much of the later work can be completed flexibly in the student's own free time, and has been designed around the needs of students who are also working full time.

There are 3 semesters per year. In each semester the student completes one module from a choice of 5 or 6 modules that will be offered each semester. In the partnership with the Dasman Diabetes Institute and Ministry of Health in Kuwait the face to face teaching is hosted at the Dasman Diabetes Institute.

How you will be assessed

All 20 credit modules are assessed on Coursework. To complete each module and to progress to the next, students are required to:

- Attend the face-to-face teaching.
- Complete the workplace-based assignment which requires participants to apply educational principles to their own situation and reflect on the result.
- Students are required to base their projects and activities within their own organisations so that they can utilise their new knowledge and build on opportunities created by the programme to shift the balance of care. The project (or an agreed part of the project) undertaken for Assignment 1 must be completed within 6 weeks from the end of the face-to-face teaching days.

Assignment 1: Workplace Project Report (2000 words - excluding reference list and appendices)
A critical examination of the student’s own workplace-based project, which is undertaken in response to the specific module aims and study topics (or a series of activities relating to the module).

Assignment 2: Reflective Essay (1500 words - excluding reference list and appendices)
A reflective analysis of the student’s own learning and development throughout the module, describing the impact that the module study activities and workplace-based project experiences have had upon their own thinking and professional practice.

Marks are awarded equally between Assignment 1: the description of the workplace-based assignment and Assignment 2: the reflective analysis of the project.

The Dissertation Module (60 credits) which must be passed to graduate with the MSc is assessed through a 12,000-15,000 word thesis.

The increasing burden of chronic illness is one of the greatest challenges facing health systems globally. In the UK, approximately 18 million people live with a long term or chronic condition and this number is expected to double by 2030. Approximately 80% of GP consultations, 60% of days spent in hospital and two thirds of all emergency hospital admissions are associated with chronic conditions (Department of Health 2004).

Managing long term and chronic conditions currently accounts for almost 70% of the NHS budget and these costs are projected to increase significantly given the ageing population and escalating risk factors such as obesity and inactivity.

Long term and chronic conditions can have profound and far reaching implications on all aspects of peoples’ lives and can present patients (and families) with a spectrum of needs.

People living with a long term or chronic condition require support, care and rehabilitation from a wide range of professionals in health, social and voluntary care sectors. In addition, effective health promotion, prevention, self-care and self-management will help ensure that chronic illnesses are avoided wherever possible and that people are more informed to safely and effectively manage their health and wellbeing.

This requires complex responses over extended periods of time, coordinated, proactive and collaborative input from the health, social care and voluntary sectors, patients, carers and lay personnel (as in the Expert Patient Programme). These need to be optimally embedded with systems which actively promote and support sustainable stakeholder collaboration and patient empowerment.

Long Term and Chronic Conditions Management Course Structure

The MSc Long Term and Chronic Conditions is designed to be both multi-disciplinary and inter-professional and thereby mirror long term and chronic condition management within the National Health Service (NHS) and government initiatives.

This course is structured as either a one year full-time or three year part-time modular taught Master's degree. The core structure is based around a holistic approach to long term and chronic conditions management, coupled with research.

The Long Term and Chronic Conditions Management programme offer students the flexibility to choose a “bespoke” path that enables them to develop personally and professionally relevant qualifications with a range of optional modules on offer.

Long Term and Chronic Conditions Management students can ‘drill down’ within their specialist area, for example, health promotion, leadership or cancer rehabilitation.

Career Prospects

Current and previous Long Term and Chronic Conditions Management students have roles as nurses, physiotherapists, podiatrists, Occupational Therapists, chiropractors, physicians and health science graduates.

Health management consultancy is a placement that is part of the academic requirement of the course. Consultancies address a wide range of issues: strategy development, operational efficiency, new technologies and business start-ups. Consultancy teams are directed by the client, and facilitated and supported by the MHM academic team.

Technology transfer and marketisation projects provide opportunities for training and mentoring in commercialisation, on-the-job learning in multi-disciplinary teams and in some cases the opportunity to join a start-up management team.

Internship opportunities are available through the MHM Intern Development Programme. This offers opportunities with some of the most influential healthcare organisations in London. Internships are three-month periods of work experience, and opportunities to leverage career experience and direction. These are in the winter and spring semesters, as the health management consultancy placement is completed in the summer semester.

The MSc Global Healthcare Management programme has been carefully designed, drawing on the expertise of health, social care and leadership and management from within the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health to enhance students’ personal/professional attributes, abilities to think creatively and apply entrepreneurial skills, in leading the delivery of quality health and social care services and responding to the global health challenges now and in the future. Successful completion of the module will also enable students to apply for Chartered Manager status via the qualified route.

It is aimed at conservators and curators with significant collections care responsibilities, as well as graduates from conservation or other museum related disciplines intending to develop their careers in this area.

The two year course offers a flexible study path to achieve your MA. The curriculum is delivered in themed 5 day modules spread out over the two year programme. Course modules cover a comprehensive programme of theory coupled with practical conservation exercises and visits that focus on key aspects of contemporary collections care and management practice. Programme Aims

The aims of the Masters programme in Collections Care and Management are to:

Practical:

1. Provide a context, environment and study collection where collections care and conservation
management skills can be developed and applied within a working historic house context.

2. To develop core competencies in collections care and conservation management including
understanding object, material and collection contexts and types, agents of deterioration and
how the damage that they cause can be monitored and mitigated, risk assessment and
management, object handling, storage, loans, transport and display; along with skills relating to
budgeting, fundraising and managing people.

Theoretical:

3. Foster a critical awareness of the significance of objects and collections, including their cultural,
historical and site specific context.

4. Develop a critical awareness of key theoretical concepts that underpin collections care and
conservation management, including the agents of deterioration, the principles of risk and
change management.

5. Develop originality in the application of principles and knowledge, coupled with a practical
understanding of how established techniques of research and enquiry are used to create and
interpret knowledge in the field of collections care and conservation management.

Professional:

6. To enable the students' potential and aptitude for professional practice, research and
employment by encouraging self-direction and originality in tackling and solving problems and in
planning and implementing projects.

7. To encourage open-minded attitudes and approaches that equip students to become selfmotivated,
independent professionals, able to make decisions confidently in complex and
unpredictable situations

8. Prepare students for professional practice in collections care and conservation management
roles in a range of heritage contexts.

Facilities

Facilities include an analytical laboratory and computer suite. The on-site Art and Conservation Library gives you access to specialist databases and thousands of specialist books and journals.

Collaboration with other conservation specialisms makes for a uniquely enriched learning environment.

The Quality Diabetes Care programme will be of interest to health care professionals (e.g. doctors, nurses, pharmacists, dieticians, podiatrists) working in diabetes care settings. It will equip participants with skills for modern evidence based management of diabetes patients, and offer practical experience in organisational management, reflective practice and quality improvement.

Why study Quality Diabetes Care at Dundee?

Dundee has a particular international reputation for Diabetes research, education and informatics developments. With the growing prevalence of diabetes (currently around 5% in the UK with a doubling of rates predicted over the next 15 years), there is an increasing need for generalists to upskill in diabetes care.

This course will equip you with essential skills and modern evidence based practice for clinical management of diabetes patients. In addition, this programme offers knowledge and practical experience in organisational management, reflective practice and quality improvement.

Much of the work can be completed flexibly in your own free time, and has been designed around the needs of students who are also working full time.

Aims of the programme

The programme aims to:
- Provide a comprehensive programme to enable understanding of diabetes care (from patient to organisational management) for health care professionals
- Establish a stimulating environment for research, teaching and learning about diabetes
- Ensure a high quality evidence based approach in patient management, teaching, research and evaluation.
- Ensure a critical understanding of current issues in diabetes management.
- Enable students with theory and practical tools for healthcare quality improvement.
- Establish students with a basic grounding in educational/ behaviour change theory with application to patient and professional education
- Encourage students to apply critical analysis to complex problem solving.
- Allow development of generic attributes and skills including reflective practice, professionalism, literature appraisal and academic writing
- Encourage a culture of multidisciplinary working in the workplace.

Who should study this course?

This programme will be of interest to health care professionals (e.g. doctors, nurses, pharmacists, dieticians, podiatrists) working either as generalists or in specialist diabetes care settings.

How is this course taught?

The teaching approach is one of blended learning with fixed face to face teaching (lectures, group work, case discussions, workshops, simulation exercises, quizzes) blended with online activities, case based studies and workplace assessment. Much of the later work can be completed flexibly in the students own free time, and has been designed around the needs of students who are also working full time.

The face to face component requires attendance in Dundee, 3 times throughout the year (2 consecutive days teaching each time). The remainder of the course delivered is online.

Much of the private study will be self-directed and relate to various work place projects (see assessments). Students are expected to undertake approx. 8 - 12 hours of work per week, either as self directed study or undertaking specific activities associated with the course.

What will you study?

Year 1: PG Certificate
The proposed Year 1 PG certificate programme will be taught over a period of 12 months. It will be taught and assessed as 3 x 20 credit compulsory modules (SCQF level 11 credits), namely:

Diabetes Clinical Care (20 credits)
Diabetes Organisational Care (20 credits)
Enhanced Patient Care and Professional Development (20 credits)


Year 2: PG Diploma
Students who decide to progress to the diploma stage will have the option of doing a further two modules totalling 60 credits. These modules will develop further advanced skills in clinical care and organisation, healthcare quality improvement and research methodology to allow students to develop their own diabetes service more effectively and embed skills required for their 3rd year dissertation (thesis).

Two of the modules also run as part of the MSc in Quality Improvement:
Quality Improvement in Action (30 credits)
Developing Research and Evaluation Skills (compulsory for students continuing to Year 3) (30 credits)

The third optional module for year 2 is
Advanced Diabetes Clinical Practice (30 credits)

Year 3: MSc Dissertation
Year 3 will involve students undertaking a more substantial project in the field of either Diabetes Care with either a Clinical/ Quality Improvement or Educational theme. Students will be allocated an appropriate university supervisor. This work will be presented as a 10-15,000 word thesis.

How is this course assessed?

Each modules will be assessed individually. Assessments include completion of clinical case scenarios, work place projects, and associated reflective essays in an attempt to embed learning and reflection into real life clinical practice. Quality improvement modules will require additional topic specific written work and on-line activities.

Careers

We would envisage this course/ qualification being of interest to health care professionals (e.g. doctors, nurses, pharmacists) working either as generalists or in diabetes care settings. The qualification may be used by primary care doctors for personal development/ CPD accumulation, and to enable them to set up and enhance their own diabetes specialist services.

For the secondary care training doctors, or allied health professionals, the qualifications could be used to help general career progression or be used to aid a move into specialist diabetes care services either within primary or secondary care.

This qualification is NOT equivalent to accreditation onto the diabetes medical specialist register e.g. allowing the individual to operate as a diabetes consultant.
