Our accelerated programme will help you become a practicing physiotherapist with only two years of study, rather than the traditional three. You'll use your existing academic skills to study patient management in core areas of physiotherapy, including cardiorespiratory, musculoskeletal and neurology.

We offer a blend of academic study and practical experience, including five placement opportunities in a variety of settings across North West England, Southern Scotland and the Isle of Man. After 1000 hours of supervised clinical practice, combined with the research and theory learnt in the classroom, you'll have everything you need to be a fully-registered and qualified physiotherapy practitioner.

Course outline

This programme is validated by both the Health and Care Professions Council and the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, ensuring eligibility to register with both organisations. We cover core areas of current practice and embrace the values of the NHS Constitution, such as treating people with respect, dignity and compassion.

All modules have been designed with reference to related organisations, including the HCPC, CSP and NHS to ensure relevance to contemporary practice. In addition, five clinical placements are integrated throughout the course. These do not carry academic credit but must be successfully completed in order to achieve the award.

The programme adopts an evaluative and evidence-based approach to physiotherapy practice. You'll work collaboratively with students from other professional disciplines and be involved in peer assessment. A series of mandatory training events including basic life support and infection control will be timetabled over the two years.

Graduate destinations

You'll be qualified to work in a variety of NHS, education, private, voluntary and independent environments both in the UK and abroad. Some countries will require graduates to take an entry examination or assessment. The skills you learn will serve you well both in the clinical field and in any job requiring research, leadership or management skills.

Admission requirements

You will hold:
-An existing BSc (Hons) degree in a relevant science-based subject, normally at 2i (upper class second) level. Examples of relevant subjects include sports rehabilitation, sports therapy, human biology, biomedical sciences, anatomy and physiology, etc.
OR
-An existing qualification in nursing, midwifery or relevant Allied Health Profession, gained through study to BSc (Hons) level.
-A recognised practitioner qualification in e.g: osteopathy or chiropractic.

In addition, you will have gained:
-Work experience or observation in one or more relevant clinical or voluntary settings. One of these would ideally be within the UK NHS, or equivalent service for international students.

You will be able to demonstrate:
-Study to level 6 within the past 5 year (to the start of the programme).
-A good basic knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, which will be assessed at interview.

Other entry qualifications
Non-standard entrants are required to demonstrate ability to benefit from and to successfully complete the course. These candidates will need to show evidence of continuous professional development within the last 5 years; relevant work experience; and demonstrate the motivation and ability to succeed. All applicants will need to provide evidence of academic ability to Level 6.

Work Experience
All applicants are strongly advised to seek work experience in physiotherapy prior to application / interview to gain a full understanding of current physiotherapy practice.

Overseas students and language requirements
We welcome applications from overseas students. If English is not your first language we also require one of the following qualifications:
-IELTS - an overall mark of 7 with no less than 6.5 in any one component
-TOEFL - 550 points paper-based or 213 points computer-based

Applicants who are selected for interview are invited to attend the Fusehill Street campus in Carlisle for an information session and campus tour, followed by a group activity assessment, an assessment of human anatomy and physiology knowledge and an individual interview.

Selection is initially based on academic profile, personal statement and academic reference. At interview we are looking for a good understanding of physiotherapy practice; excellent communication skills; motivation and commitment to pursuing physiotherapy as a career; and the potential to succeed as a health professional. Observational work experience or visits to two different workplaces would greatly enhance understanding of the role of physiotherapy in health and social care, enabling you to succeed at interview.

All places are offered subject to successful interview, as well as Disclosure and Barring Service clearance (DBS formerly CRB), medical fitness to practise and proof of qualifications.

It uses physical approaches to promote, maintain, and restore physical, psychological and social wellbeing, taking account of the variations in health status. At Essex this is a science-based subject in which we are committed to applying, evaluating and reviewing the evidence that underpins and informs practice.

At the core of physiotherapy practice is the making of clinical judgement and informed interpretation of clinical information. Physiotherapists are autonomous professionals, able to act as first-contact practitioners, as well as accepting referrals from other health care professionals. Through partnership and negotiation, physiotherapists work with people to optimise their functional ability and potential.

This pre-registration course is a two-year accelerated programme which enables you to take advantage of inter-professional learning (IPL), encouraging professionals to learn with and from each other – an understanding that helps ensure you have the expertise to respond adequately and effectively to the complexity of your clients’ needs, and that care is safe, seamless and of a high standard.

Placement Opportunities

You will be introduced to physiotherapy through observing and working with physiotherapists practising in a variety of settings (primary and secondary care, public and private sectors, adult and the elderly, acute care setting and specialist mental health/learning disability services), and adopt a critical stand in the discussion of contemporary physiotherapy practice in the context of the environment of practice.

You are also introduced to key concepts in physiotherapy for the assessment and evaluation of patients, and given opportunities to explore scientific measures as indicators for health and illness.

We organise these practice placements for you to work in role with multi-professional health care teams in a wide range of settings.

Whilst on placement you will have an educator allocated to you and contact with a member of the academic team who will visit you and support you whilst on placement. Placements encompass a variety of multi-disciplinary health and social settings based within the NHS, the Private Sector, the Voluntary Sector and other Primary Health Care Services.

Over a thousand hours will be spent in the practice environment where students apply the theory and practice of physiotherapy. You develop your abilities to critically analyse clinical data and evidence, to make judgements and to respond to patients who require physiotherapy.

Placements are primarily based throughout Essex but you may also have the opportunity to experience services in Hertfordshire, Suffolk, Norfolk and Cambridgeshire.

Professional accreditation

Completing our course leads to eligibility to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) as a physiotherapist.

HCPC registration is required to work as a physiotherapist in the UK, and once individuals are registered they are able to practice in a wide variety of clinical settings.

A unique feature of our School is that most of our staff work or have worked within clinical practice. This enhances our grasp of the contemporary links between academic research, the major issues of the day and real-life practice.

Physiotherapy is taught by a small and friendly team of registered experienced staff with a variety of different backgrounds and research interests. The subject lead for physiotherapy is Izzie Easton. Izzie qualified as a physiotherapist in 1998, and has practised in numerous hospitals. In particular she has gained experience working in respiratory physiotherapy, orthopaedics, and critical care.

Specialist facilities

Within our School of Health and Human Sciences, we have a range of specialist clinical laboratories and IT facilities to assist you with the effective learning and acquisition of new skills; for students of Physiotherapy, we have two specialist labs on our Colchester Campus which provide you with all the facilities you need to train as a physiotherapist.

We also offer excellent physical and online resources in terms of libraries, computer labs, datasets, archives and other research materials. You can take advantage of our links with the Institute of Social and Economic Research, which conducts large-scale survey projects, many for government, EU and other public agencies, and has its own library.

The UK Data Archive is also based at our Colchester Campus and stores national research data.

This course enables graduates from any discipline to develop the theoretical, practical, analytical and evaluative skills necessary to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council as a physiotherapist. The purpose is to produce postgraduate physiotherapists who are skilled, independent, critical, analytical and capable of evaluative judgement, and who can contribute to the health and wellbeing of the individual and of society.

Graduates from the course will be distinctive in their ability to synthesise evidence from current practice and research to develop an in-depth critical knowledge and understanding of the physiotherapy profession. Furthermore, they will be able to demonstrate a critical awareness of current issues within the provision of health and social care, and will be capable of demonstrating leadership in both personal and professional development.

Teaching, learning and assessment

There is a strong emphasis on student-directed learning. A variety of assessment methods are used including exams, coursework, presentations and practical exams. Practice-based learning is a major component of the course, comprising more than 1,000 hours of study at clinical sites throughout Scotland.

In Year One you will complete a two-week foundation placement in semester one and two six-week placements over the summer. In Year Two you will undertake one six-week placement in semester two and one six-week and one four-week elective placement over the summer. Any additional travel and accommodation costs associated with placement will be borne by the student. Normally there are 32–34 students per year on this course. The year group is split into smaller groups for practical classes and tutorials. This ensures that individuals receive excellent support and benefit from sharing their experiences with their classmates.

Teaching hours and attendance

This is a full-time course and students are expected to be available 9am-5pm Monday to Friday. Students should expect to study for an average of 40 hours per week. Timetabled classes are approximately 12-15 hours per week.

Links with industry/professional bodies

On completion, you will be eligible to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council as a physiotherapist. You will also be eligible to apply for membership of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy.

Careers

The majority of graduates work as physiotherapists within the National Health Service – either in major hospitals or in the community. With further post-registration experience, graduates can choose to specialise in a particular area, which may include for example: sports, neurology, paediatrics, respiratory, orthopaedics or private practice. Some graduates choose to follow a research career path.

This accelerated course is taught with the innovative problem-based learning approach, with an emphasis on practical application of skills and knowledge. Through this balance of theory and practice experience you will graduate a capable and confident physiotherapist.

Course structure

This intensive programme runs over 45 weeks per year, for two years. Your time on the course will be balanced between campus-based study and clinical practice.

The course begins in February and consists of six campus-based modules and five practice modules. Year 1 is mainly campus-based and year 2 predominantly involves practice placements alongside the campus-based Research Dissertation Studies.

The course is delivered in a variety of ways, typically via problem-based tutorials, subject specialist resource sessions, skills workshops, and simulation in our high-tech Human Movement Laboratory, and Clinical Skills and Simulation Rooms.

Completion of the Project Studies module and the submission of a dissertation lead to the masters award.

Your study will focus on real-life situations, integrating subjects such as anatomy, physiology, pathology, therapeutic skills, behavioural sciences and research methods.

Human Movement Laboratory:

The Human Movement Laboratory is used widely by our physiotherapy, occupational therapy and podiatry students, and is also used for commercial consultancy.

In the lab you will use the latest technology to measure and assess all aspects of human movement, joints, muscles, soft tissue structure and nerves. The laboratory has equipment for conducting cardio-pulmonary investigations including Cosmed metabolic system and spirometry.

Clinical Skills and Simulation Suite:

Our Clinical Skills and Simulation Suite is among the best equipped in the country, and is an invaluable tool for assessment and monitoring students' progress throughout the course.

You will benefit from practising nursing skills in an environment that simulates real-life professional experiences. Provided by the NHS’ South East Coast Ambulance Service, you may have access to our Simbulance, enabling you to work alongside paramedic students in an interprofessional learning environment. On board is a high fidelity mannikin with multiple uses, and a child-size mannikin for paediatric scenarios.

Learning by simulation means you will be confident in your ability to apply your knowledge and skills in your professional life.

Problem-based learning

Our educational philosophy mirrors the philosophy of occupational therapy. We believe that an individual's positive engagement in learning activity leads to advanced productivity, increased perception of self-worth, improved quality of life and enjoyment of the course.

Our occupational therapy courses use problem-based learning (PBL), a technique recommended by authorities around the world. All subjects covered are integrated around problem-solving within a real life situation. We find that learning in this way significantly increases our students’ engagement with the subjects.

As a physiotherapist you will help people of all ages to manage pain and dysfunction. James Milligan gained fifteen years of clinical experience in a variety of acute hospital and community settings in West Yorkshire before taking on the role of Senior Lecturer. His main interests lie in neuromusculoskeletal therapy. He is currently Course Leader of the MSc Physiotherapy course and mainly teaches undergraduate and postgraduate routes for physiotherapy and sports therapy.

This course is for people who are working as physiotherapists, who wish to develop themselves and their profession. The MSc in Advancing Physiotherapy Practice aims to help you thrive in health and social contexts where the pace of change is high and professionals need to be dynamic and proactive to meet the needs of the people they work with.

The programme of study aims to be:

-Clinical: with a focus on highly topical subjects, ability to learn in and from the workplace, practical experience, and ability to take specialist clinical and practice routes: for example, musculoskeletal physiotherapy, neurological physiotherapy, cardiorespiratory physiotherapy, paediatric physiotherapy, leadership and management, and education.

- Flexible: with a determination to enable study for students who have a variety of circumstances, and who live in different countries. Two paces of study are available (full-time and part-time) and two modes of study (distance learning, and blended learning which requires attendance). The standard full-time pace is 18 months, which can be accelerated to 12 months where relevant requirements are met. Please see the section on study routes for further details.

- Supportive: with a focus on helping you to adjust to master’s level study at the start of the programme, to stay engaged with your profession throughout the course, and to increase your employability as you progress towards completion. Study routes

-Full-time with attendance (12-18 months): The full-time study route makes use of blended mode of learning which includes face-to-face contact supported by online resources. This is designed with international students in mind and offers attractive practical modules as well as opportunities to learn in clinical settings (see modules). The standard duration of the full-time route is 18 months. This is valuable if your priority is to use all opportunities to develop your professional standing and employability. If you wish to prioritise quick completion of your MSc Advancing Physiotherapy Practice, and meet requirements, you can accelerate it to 12 months duration.

-Part-time with attendance (3-7 years): You can study the MSc Advancing Physiotherapy Practice part-time, with a minimum duration of 3 years, and maximum duration of 7 years. If you study this route you can select modules that involve some attendance and some online study. For example, some modules are delivered with blocks of attendance and online study between these blocks. If you study part-time you can also choose to complete distance learning modules as part of your programme.

-Distance learning (part-time or full-time) (1-7 years): You can choose modules that enable you to complete your MSc Advancing Physiotherapy Practice entirely as distance learning . You can study distance learning at a full-time pace (12-18 months duration) or at a part-time pace (3-7 years).

Teaching, learning and assessment

We use a range of student-centred learning methods, including tutorials, seminars and practical classes, with facilitation of work-based learning and recognition of prior learning. Further specific strategies are used to enable distance learning.
Your performance will be assessed by coursework (assignments), presentations and practical examinations, and you are provided with structured support in learning how to develop and demonstrate your academic skills at a master’s level. Class sizes are usually 5-10 students.

Teaching hours and attendance

Each module that is studied on-campus will require you to attend classes and carry out independent work. Your attendance requirements at QMU will vary between semesters of study, but contact time might average about six hours per week over one academic year; this would be higher during taught modules. Whether you are studying distance learning or through a mixture of face-to-face contact and online work (blended learning), each 30-credit module will entail around 300 hours of student work. This includes contact with tutors (online or face-to-face), supported by independent learning. When thinking about the total amount of learning, for the full-time pace of study, you will undertake 120 credits of study over two 15-week semesters, followed by your dissertation. This suggests up to 40 hours per week of study. A student who chooses to study part-time may be undertaking, for example, 60 credits of study, which would equate to about 20 hours per week of study. The distance learning route can be studied part-time or full-time.

Links with industry/professional bodies

In order to design a flexible, clinical and supportive programme, we talked with current students, ex-students and employers internationally. We collaborate with many physiotherapists and managers locally to create opportunities for our students to contribute to the development of physiotherapy services during their programmes. This ensures the relevance of their studies, their professional development, and advancement of the physiotherapy profession. The MSc Physiotherapy is accredited by the UK’s Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (to be confirmed following recent revalidation). This course does not lead to HCPC registration. However, advice is given to assist the process of registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). Course material will also help the student to develop knowledge and skills recognised by the HCPC.

This course is for qualified physiotherapists and aims to improve your practice by developing your assessment skills and clinical reasoning. You explore ways to measure the effectiveness of your clinical practice as well as issues such as collaborative practice and engaging patients.

All modules focus on elements of clinical practice, and we encourage you to apply your learning to the setting in which you work or wish to specialise. This ensures that the course gives you a balance of practical and academic skills. Assessments are designed to replicate the challenges you may face within the workplace. This offers an authentic experience and the opportunity to develop skills that are directly transferable to practice.

The course helps to improve your employment prospects and clinical skills, enabling you to lead clinical teams or work in teaching or research. If you study the course full-time, we provide placement experience in the UK where you work with an experienced clinician who is also an experienced tutor. The placement is an integral part of the course, so you choose the field in which you specialise and then apply your learning to clinical practice. If you study the course part-time and already work in clinical practice, you will be supported to apply your learning in your current post.

You learn from enthusiastic tutors including academics who have physiotherapy research published in peer reviewed journals. This includes Dr Stephen May, who is an internationally renowned physiotherapist who has contributed to several well known textbooks including the key text on the McKenzie Approach 'Lumbar Spine: Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy'.

Distance learning study

A key feature of this course is that all modules can be studied as distance learning or as university-based teaching. Distance learning allows you to study from any location in the world, and at times that are convenient for your work and life commitments. To aid your professional and clinical development we use a range of online learning and teaching activities, such as interactive tutor and peer group discussions, patient video case studies and reflective journals around clinical practice. Experienced tutors also provide regular personal guidance and feedback.
