The MSc Nursing with Registration (Adult) is for graduates from every academic discipline, from Accounting to Zoology, who want to become a qualified adult nurse and gain a master-level qualification.
This is a stimulating and challenging programme, integrating theory and practice in the discipline of nursing. Clinical nursing practice is at the centre of the programme and takes place in a variety of settings in the Leeds area. It includes regional healthcare specialities, such as renal, liver, neurology and cardiac.
You’ll study at the University campus and through our Virtual Learning Environment. You’ll experience a variety of different field-specific clinical placements, including acute and long-term settings, and will care for people in hospital and in the community.
Students who successfully complete this programme will be able to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC)
The first year of the course is designed to introduce you to theoretical knowledge, skills and attitudes required for clinical practice. Underpinning subjects, such as biology, sociology, psychology, communication and the theory and practice of nursing, are taught via a level 3 (degree level) module. You spend time in clinical practice in this year, where you'll develop a number of nursing skills and apply your theoretical knowledge.
Over the next two years of the programme you'll further develop your knowledge and skills, but more specifically in relation to adult nursing. The first module of this year will be at level 3, but all remaining modules will be at Master’s level. You study modules specific to nursing, as well as more generic leadership and research modules. You’ll have access to modern School of Healthcare facilities.
There is the opportunity to study an optional module from a menu centred on either research, advanced practice or management. The optional modules include the opportunity to have an observational placement abroad.
Clinical experience during the programme will include some weekend and night duty shifts to meet the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) recommendations. Time is also given in the programme for independent study and assessment preparation.
Holidays are allocated for the whole three years to meet University and NMC regulations and cannot be negotiated. We make every effort to link these to school holidays at Christmas, Easter and in August.

This programme gives you the opportunity to gain and develop a vast range of theoretical nursing knowledge and practical skills through taught sessions and attendance in clinical practice. You’ll attend the University one or two days a week and will be in clinical placement for the remainder of the week.
There is flexibility within the modules for you to develop your knowledge and skills in those areas of practice most appropriate to the work environment, and you’ll be able to learn with other healthcare professionals. You’ll have access to a wide range of different clinical specialisms, including hospital and community placements. You’ll also develop research skills and carry out a dissertation project related to nursing practice.
At the end of the programme, we’ll support you in meeting the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) requirements for entry to the professional register.
When and where do I study?
Intake for the programme is in September of each academic year.

This innovative programme equips nurses with the knowledge to add prescribing to their suite of skills. It permits nurses the opportunities to pursue challenging study in the subject areas of ethics, law and all aspects of pharmacotherapeutics as they apply to Non-Medical Prescribing. Nurses will be able to develop their skills of health assessment to help them to provide holistic care across a range of conditions, in accordance with NMC Standards of Prescribing. This will both advance practice and promote patient safety and quality of care. Nurses working in a range of professional teams will find the appeal of becoming a V300 prescriber, an essential component of promoting professional accountability and patient empowerment.
This course consists of three modules of study to gain the professional and academic awards. You will study pharmacotherapeutics, the study of all aspects of drugs, how they work and interact and the physiological basis to prescribing. You will explore the legal and ethical basis of sound prescribing in practice, within the professional and statutory frameworks. You will also become proficient in physical and mental health assessment. You will compile a professional workbook to demonstrate the acquistion of prescribing competencies, and spend time in clinical practice refining and developing prescribing and health assessment skills. You will be mentored by an experienced doctor and gain experience with other non-medical prescribers during the course of the programme.

Health Assessment and Clinical Reasoning
This level 7 module provides an opportunity for students to develop and enhance the knowledge base and practice of health assessment, in order that appropriate interventions and management can occur. Students will begin to develop their assessment skills under the guidance of a mentor during this module. Assessment is 100% coursework.
Prescribing in practice 7
This module will help to prepare nurses to undertake an active role in nurse prescribing within their specified area of practice. The legislative framework and professional and ethical principles, which underpin prescribing practice, are explored. Assessment is by a combination of coursework and examination.
Pharmacotherapeutics in Prescribing
This module provides the necessary pharmacological knowledge within the context of the underpinning pathophysiology that will enable the healthcare professional to prescribe safely, appropriately, and effectively within a collaborative health care team. It will be offered through a combination of e-learning, taught components and threaded discussion with supported group work. Assessment is by a combination of coursework and examination.

This course offers experienced nurses the unique opportunity to include prescribing as part of their employability skills. Whilst individual nurses have already usually considerable expertise within their scope of professional practice, this course creates many career opportunities which makes the V300 qualified nurse a very appealing employee across a range of nursing specialisms, Nurses working in general acute and chronic care, in specialist teams and services, from neonatal care through mental and sexual health, diabetes, cardiac care (and many other walks of nursing life), have benefitted from doing this programme. Advanced Practice is a part-time programme for experienced healthcare practitioners in hospital and community settings. The programme builds on your existing skills and experience to enable you to lead and support the development and delivery of evidence-based practice. Module outcomes are mapped against the Knowledge and Skills Framework so NHS employees can identify learning to support career progression.
This programme is suitable for practitioners, educators and managers from many healthcare disciplines who are developing autonomous practice, supporting educational and practice development or exercising clinical leadership. Practitioners may choose to follow a generic pathway or choose from a number of clinical specialities. Applicants are generally expected to be working within the chosen specialist field.
The programme is relevant for qualified healthcare practitioners in the following areas or roles: Cancer Nursing, Cardiac Care, Child Healthcare, Critical Care, Dermatology, Diabetes Care, District Nursing, Leadership, Midwifery, Palliative Care, Primary Care Nurse Practitioner/Community Matron/Case Manager, Women's Health Care.
Modules will only run if there are sufficient numbers of students enrolled and the minimum number is 12.
This programme is intended for experienced healthcare practitioners who are seeking to advance their practice, enhance their knowledge of research and evidence-based healthcare, and develop their roles.
This programme is part-time with taught sessions comprising a mixture of one day per week attendance and study blocks. Students select from modules rated at 15 or 30 credits. Students may elect to undertake one or more practice portfolios where practice accounts are used to demonstrate specialist or advanced practice.
Students are assessed through a combination of coursework and examinations. This can include written assignments such as essays, portfolios and dissertations. In addition, some modules will require students to undertake a presentation as part of the module assessment. A small number of modules are assessed by an exam, such as an unseen written examination or a computer-based assessment.
All students will also have to complete a clinical-based competency assessment as part of the MSc/PGDip/PGCert Advanced Practice pathway. This assessment is a clinical hurdle with 0 credits and is undertaken in the student’s workplace with an assessor.
Possible options after taking this programme include advanced practice roles such as nurse consultant, specialist practice roles, education, research and audit.
This MSc has been developed in conjunction with the British Association of Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation for healthcare professionals and people aspiring to work in the rapidly evolving field of cardiovascular rehabilitation.
You are supported by teaching staff who are active in research that is critical to our understanding of cardiovascular health. The programme is designed for people already working in the field, as well as students without a professional background.
All students receive a grounding in the theory and practice of cardiovascular rehabilitation, and you will apply this knowledge to real life settings. We have strong links with the NHS and the City Healthcare Partnership. Heart patients come to the University twice a week and are involved in our research, which currently includes a UK study to look at the benefits of high intensity training to heart health.
We are currently seeking accreditation to allow students to register for the BACPR exercise instructor training qualification, permitting them to work directly with cardiac patients undertaking structured exercise training programmes in the UK.
The programme is available at postgraduate certificate, postgraduate diploma and masters level. It is designed to allow flexible study to enable professionals to continue working
The course combines theory and practice to give students the knowledge and skills to work directly with patients undergoing cardiovascular rehabilitation in the community. Students will undertake a clinical placement and will also gain advanced academic skills and knowledge to undertake an extended research project.

This programme has been designed as a vocational qualification for professionals and graduates wanting to expand the life chances of people living with heart disease. Many people undertaking this programme of study may already work in the health service.
For these students, the course will strengthen your CV and enable further professional development as you become an expert in your field. People who do not already work in the sector may seek employment within the NHS, or for private healthcare providers, including BUPA and Nuffield Health, or as sports rehabilitators.
