Cardiac Arrhythmias management is rapidly developing as a subspecialty within cardiology that is devoted to the diagnosis and the treatment of cardiac rhythm disorders, including invasive evaluation of their mechanisms, controlled destruction of arrhythmogenic myocardium by percutaneous catheters, and implantation of cardiac rhythm management devices.
Catheter ablation is the therapy of choice for most supraventricular tachycardias (over 100 000 interventions performed every year in Europe). Device implantation for arrhythmia treatment, sudden death prevention, and cardiac resynchronization are practiced regularly nowadays (performed in more than 200 000 patients in Europe per year). The increase in the indications and the number of all of these procedures depicts the present scenario by emerging indications, an increasing number of invasive procedures, and the establishment of new practicing units and professionals. Nevertheless, these procedures require cardiologists with comprehensive knowledge of cardiac arrhythmias disorders and who are trained in cardiovascular catheter manipulation, heart electrical signal recording and interpretation, and device implantation and follow-up to ensure both patient's safety and quality.
Thus, it appears to be imperative to promote and ensure sufficient and homogeneous training and qualification in cardiac arrhythmias management amongst these professionals.
During the clinical training year, time is available to complete research projects and undertake smaller projects including case reports. Our fellows typically publish two to three peer reviewed publications during their clinical year and complete prior research projects. We encourage individuals without significant electrophysiology experience in their fellowship to participate in a comprehensive program that involves research and extended clinical training for two to three years (PhD program).

This internationally recognised course is designed to train healthcare professionals to be the clinical leaders of the future by providing a mix of clinical and professional knowledge relevant to the practice of cardiology in contemporary healthcare.
Learning in key professional domains includes service leadership and development, research, commissioning and communication and teaching. The cardiology content of the programme provides comprehensive learning to meet the professional development needs of a wide range of practitioners working in cardiology including: doctors, nurses, paramedics, pharmacists, physiologists and radiographers.
The course aims to increase students’ practical and theoretical knowledge of advanced clinical and interventional cardiology, by promoting their exploration of the current evidence for diagnosis and treatment. The course seeks to enable the student to use this evidence toward good practice through focussing on the practical aspects of the care of common cardiac conditions from a medical and patient perspective. In addition, the course aims to promote a wider understanding of the differing profiles and contributory roles of the various health care professionals involved in the care of cardiac patients.
Most modules are assessed by means of a 3,000 word in-depth evaluation of a topic agreed by the student and module leader. The clinical modules are also assessed by means of an unseen written examination.

Our teaching laboratories are accredited by the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES), as are most of our course staff. You can register on the BASES Supervised Experience Scheme yourself to achieve personal accreditation.
The course is flexible in that it allows you to exit with a postgraduate certificate at the end of one semester (three 20-credit modules) or a postgraduate diploma at the end of two semesters (six 20-credit modules). You must complete the 60-credit research project to qualify for the MSc.
You spend around 100 hours of the course with an organisation related to the practice of physiology, which will allow you to apply your academic knowledge in a vocational setting. Previous students have worked in organisations including a cardiac rehabilitation programme and fall prevention classes with Albion in the Community. The duties performed by a Clinical Exercise Specialist (CES) are linked closely to treating patients living with a long term condition in which exercise has been shown to provide therapeutic benefit. Specifically, cardiovascular diseases, pulmonary diseases, diabetes, stroke, cancer and musculoskeletal limitations remain important health concerns that have all been shown to benefit from regular, safe exercise.

The modular programme is offered in two formats: Full-time (12 months) and Part-time (24 months). The course includes 120 credits of taught units and a 60 credit Project. It is also possible to study parts of this course for CPD purposes, such as a single unit (30 credits) or top up a related Postgraduate Diploma to a full MSc.
The units contain vocational elements relevant for providing personalised exercise training for a range of medical conditions, including classroom, exercise laboratory and placement learning. The MSc Clinical Exercise Project unit prepares you for your independent project, where you will plan and implement a service evaluation, research project or enterprise & innovation project in the area of clinical exercise.
Teaching takes place on Thursdays, Fridays and some Saturdays, so attendance on selected weekends is necessary for the vocational training included in some of the units. Placements take place in areas such as Southampton, Winchester, Portsmouth and Chichester and are scheduled according to placement provider requirements during the week. Each unit is generally taught over a three week block, however cardiac rehabilitation requires a longer study period.

The delivery format for the course is largely based around seminar, practical, workshop and placement learning to integrate theory into practical sessions. Our MRes Cardiovascular Health and Disease course is a research-focused master's course focusing on cardiovascular research within a unique multidisciplinary training environment.
A Master of Research (MRes) degree provides preparatory training for academic research, ideal if you want to eventually progress on to a PhD and develop a research career, or if you wish to gain research skills within specialist areas before committing to a PhD. This course is also highly suited to medical students who want to intercalate.
Through this course, you will develop broad biomedical research skills, but with an emphasis on application to cardiovascular science.
It is now widely recognised by employers and research councils that unravelling the basis of cardiovascular disease and developing new therapies is a high-priority area for investment, especially since the economic burden of cardiovascular disease is increasing.

The aim of our Exercise as Medicine MSc is to equip you with the knowledge and skills to effectively promote the uptake of exercise, both as a prescriptive medicine and as preventative therapy.
As the crucial role of exercise and physical activity in the prevention and treatment of diseases and medical conditions is increasingly understood, and health practitioners are encouraged to consider exercise when designing treatment plans and health interventions, so grow the opportunities for well-qualified individuals with an understanding of research in this area.
Our Exercise As Medicine MSc has been developed in response to this trend, drawing on the University's internationally-recognised research on physical activity and health. The Exercise As Medicine programme is aimed at individuals with a background in exercise science and/or physical activity wishing to enhance their scientific knowledge and skills to effectively promote the uptake of exercise both as prescriptive medicine and as preventative therapy, particularly to patients with hypertension, diabetes, pulmonary, renal, and other cardiac conditions, or those at risk of metabolic syndrome.
This MSc will therefore educate a new, highly skilled cadre of allied health professionals with the ability to work alongside clinicians and practitioners to manage the epidemic of lifestyle-related diseases and conditions.

The National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine (NCSEM) is an Olympic legacy project delivering education, research and clinical services in sport, exercise and physical activity. It aims to apply world-class expertise to policies and practice that will benefit the health and wellbeing of the nation – from everyday people at risk of ill health through to elite athletes.
A wide range of high quality research takes place within the NCSEM-EM, which is then translated into teaching and training through its educational programmes. There is also a range of clinical services offered including sport and exercise medicine, orthopaedics, and cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation, as well as diagnostic facilities including a 3T MRI scanner.

This degree will give students both practical teaching and academic insight into several areas of intensive care paediatrics. Being able to understand the theory behind current approaches whilst learning about the latest research to take the speciality forward will be of value for general paediatricians as well as potential intensivists.
Students will learn about the theory and practice of paediatric intensive care medicine (PICM), covering general issues, cardiac critical care and transport of the critically ill child. Content includes topics from UK and international PICM curricula, and will help towards building the knowledge and understanding required to undertake the European Paediatric/Neonatal Intensive Care professional qualification.

The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars, tutorials and research project supervision. It is expected that most of the medically-qualified graduates from this pathway will pursue a career involving paediatric intensive care medicine in the UK or abroad. This may be as a general paediatrician with an interest in intensive care or as specialist intensivists. Nurses and associated professionals are likely to be looking for career progression into senior posts in PICM in both clinical and management roles.
This programme provides experience in current practice within paediatric intensive care medicine and equips the student to do research in both PICM and other areas of interest. These skills increase general employability and should open up training opportunities and more senior posts in PICM going forward.
This is the only taught programme anywhere across Europe that covers such a wide spectrum of paediatric intensive care medicine. Modules take the learner through the fundamentals of PICM, whilst enhancing knowledge, critical appraisal, research skills, and readiness for careers in acute paediatrics, in particular the care of critically ill and deteriorating children. Students will also have the opportunity to undertake a supervised dissertation or research project of their choice in PICM, supervised by world experts in this field.
