Cardiac Arrhythmias management is rapidly developing as a subspecialty within cardiology that is devoted to the diagnosis and the treatment of cardiac rhythm disorders, including invasive evaluation of their mechanisms, controlled destruction of arrhythmogenic myocardium by percutaneous catheters, and implantation of cardiac rhythm management devices.

Catheter ablation is the therapy of choice for most supraventricular tachycardias (over 100 000 interventions performed every year in Europe). Device implantation for arrhythmia treatment, sudden death prevention, and cardiac resynchronization are practiced regularly nowadays (performed in more than 200 000 patients in Europe per year). The increase in the indications and the number of all of these procedures depicts the present scenario by emerging indications, an increasing number of invasive procedures, and the establishment of new practicing units and professionals. Nevertheless, these procedures require cardiologists with comprehensive knowledge of cardiac arrhythmias disorders and who are trained in cardiovascular catheter manipulation, heart electrical signal recording and interpretation, and device implantation and follow-up to ensure both patient's safety and quality.

Thus, it appears to be imperative to promote and ensure sufficient and homogeneous training and qualification in cardiac arrhythmias management amongst these professionals.

During the clinical training year, time is available to complete research projects and undertake smaller projects including case reports. Our fellows typically publish two to three peer reviewed publications during their clinical year and complete prior research projects. We encourage individuals without significant electrophysiology experience in their fellowship to participate in a comprehensive program that involves research and extended clinical training for two to three years (PhD program).

The Diploma of Advanced Studies in Cardiac Arrhythmia Management trains future leaders in arrhythmology to deliver state-of-the-art cardiovascular services in the next decade and beyond. DAS-CAM brings together renowned experts, who will cover not only clinical cardiac electrophysiology and device technology, but also the leadership, biostatistics and health economics perspectives. The programme will empower electrophysiologists to fulfil leadership roles as well as regulatory and managerial positions in their hospitals, universities, and other work environments.

Program Features

DAS-CAM is designed as an executive programme, consisting of eight modules spread over 2 years. Each module has the following format: online preparatory phase, intensive 4-day in-person training, followed by evaluation phase to integrate and reflect on the module. In addition to time spent in the classroom, you will also be expected to complete coursework from a distance. Modules will be taught in Brussels and Maastricht.

This course will suit you if you are a sport and exercise graduate, a graduate from a related science or a medical student looking to specialise in the field of exercise physiology.

It is designed to focus on professional skills that improve your employability, as you learn with equipment including environmental chambers, breath-by-breath analysers, blood sampling analysers and transcranial magnetic stimulation devices.

You also again gain real-world experience in areas relevant to your interests by working alongside experienced practitioners. Past projects have included working with participants in our cardiac rehabilitation programme.

Our teaching laboratories are accredited by the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES), as are most of our course staff. You can register on the BASES Supervised Experience Scheme yourself to achieve personal accreditation.

Course structure

The course is flexible in that it allows you to exit with a postgraduate certificate at the end of one semester (three 20-credit modules) or a postgraduate diploma at the end of two semesters (six 20-credit modules). You must complete the 60-credit research project to qualify for the MSc.

You spend around 100 hours of the course with an organisation related to the practice of physiology, which will allow you to apply your academic knowledge in a vocational setting. Previous students have worked in organisations including a cardiac rehabilitation programme and fall prevention classes with Albion in the Community. Many students have started their professional careers with the organisation that provided them with work experience.

Areas of study

In taught physiology modules, you'll experience and discuss the responses of the human body to various stimuli, including effect of environmental changes (heat and hypoxic chambers) and of ergogenic aids which can be used to simulate peculiar clinical conditions and help students understand better exercise tolerance. This novel approach to teaching integrative physiology will help you to develop a host of laboratory skills. You will be introduced to the latest in the research field of exercise physiology and will have an opportunity to write your own paper from your research project.

With modules such as Professional Enquiry, you'll also gain vocational skills to give you a competitive edge in the job market; through placement opportunities and chances to network in the world of exercise physiology, you'll graduate with a foot firmly in the industry.

  • We accept a maximum of 15 students on this course.
  • All classes take place in our exercise physiology laboratories with a ratio of 2:3 (staff:students).
  • Students work in groups of four to five on problem-based situations.

Our facilities include a gym over two floors with fitness equipment including a three-camera system to analyse weight-lifting actions and an isokinetic dynamometer to allow measurement of muscle strength.

Our sport and exercise laboratories which are all accredited by the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES) include:

  • a molecular genetics laboratory with biobanking
  • a biomechanics laboratory with motion analysis equipment, various EMG systems, and immersive screen
  • two exercise physiology laboratories where aerobic / anaerobic endurance, power and strength assessments as well as body composition, cardiac and pulmonary screening can be carried out
  • an environmental laboratory with purpose-built environment chamber where we can simulate different climates by controlling the temperature (-20 to +50°C) and relative humidity (20 to 95%), and a 1.13m x 1.13m x 1.5m water immersion tank
  • a research-based laboratory with an oxygen-controlled chamber to simulate altitude (hypoxia).

The course includes 60 credits of taught units and it is possible to study parts of this course for CPD purposes, such as a single credit-bearing unit (30 credits), as a postgraduate certificate or to complete this PgCert and then top this up to a postgraduate diploma (PG Dip; 120 credits) or progress to the full MSc. The units contain vocational elements relevant for providing personalised exercise training for a range of medical conditions, including classroom, exercise laboratory and placement learning.

Teaching will take place on Thursdays, Fridays and some Saturdays so attendance on selected weekends is necessary for the vocational training associated with some of the units. Placements take place in areas such as Southampton, Winchester, Portsmouth and Chichester and are scheduled according to placement provider requirements during the week. Each unit is generally taught over a three week block, however cardiac rehabilitation requires a longer study period.

Programme Assessment

The delivery format for the course is largely based around seminar, practical, workshop and placement learning to integrate theory into practical sessions. Teaching sessions will include vocational training, seminar and exercise laboratory work, led by leading practitioners in the area of clinical exercise. You will be provided with a personal tutor to assist with academic and pastoral issues.

Entry requirements

A first degree, with honours, at a minimum final classification of Lower Second (2:2) or equivalent.

A period of one year post-qualifying consolidation
Registration with the NMC regulatory body
Current employment in an appropriate role
Recommendation to undertake the course by their manager/education liaison manger as appropriate.

Master of Research (MRes) degree provides preparatory training for academic research, ideal if you want to eventually progress on to a PhD and develop a research career, or if you wish to gain research skills within specialist areas before committing to a PhD. This course is also highly suited to medical students who want to intercalate.

Through this course, you will develop broad biomedical research skills, but with an emphasis on application to cardiovascular science.

It is now widely recognised by employers and research councils that unravelling the basis of cardiovascular disease and developing new therapies is a high-priority area for investment, especially since the economic burden of cardiovascular disease is increasing.

However, it is becoming increasingly clearer that a gap has opened up between the skills possessed by new graduates and the skills normally expected on entry to a research degree or an industrial research career. This MRes has been specifically designed to fill this gap for those who wish to pursue a research career in cardiovascular sciences.

Our course is suitable if you come from a medical or science background and have little or no previous research experience.

As the crucial role of exercise and physical activity in the prevention and treatment of diseases and medical conditions is increasingly understood, and health practitioners are encouraged to consider exercise when designing treatment plans and health interventions, so grow the opportunities for well-qualified individuals with an understanding of research in this area.

Our Exercise As Medicine MSc has been developed in response to this trend, drawing on the University's internationally-recognised research on physical activity and health. The Exercise As Medicine programme is aimed at individuals with a background in exercise science and/or physical activity wishing to enhance their scientific knowledge and skills to effectively promote the uptake of exercise both as prescriptive medicine and as preventative therapy, particularly to patients with hypertension, diabetes, pulmonary, renal, and other cardiac conditions, or those at risk of metabolic syndrome.

This MSc will therefore educate a new, highly skilled cadre of allied health professionals with the ability to work alongside clinicians and practitioners to manage the epidemic of lifestyle-related diseases and conditions.

Based in the National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine – East Midlands, students registered on the programme will be taught in high quality teaching environments and have access to state-of-art laboratories designed to facilitate the transfer of cutting-edge research to front-line support and care. Students will be exposed to a range of specialist equipment and technology to facilitate their development.

The National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine (NCSEM) is an Olympic legacy project delivering education, research and clinical services in sport, exercise and physical activity. It aims to apply world-class expertise to policies and practice that will benefit the health and wellbeing of the nation – from everyday people at risk of ill health through to elite athletes.

A wide range of high quality research takes place within the NCSEM-EM, which is then translated into teaching and training through its educational programmes. About this degree

Students will learn about the theory and practice of paediatric intensive care medicine (PICM), covering general issues, cardiac critical care and transport of the critically ill child. Content includes topics from UK and international PICM curricula, and will help towards building the knowledge and understanding required to undertake the European Paediatric/Neonatal Intensive Care professional qualification.

All MSc students undertake an independent research project which culminates in a dissertation of 10,000 words.

Teaching and learning

The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars, tutorials and research project supervision. Assessment is through a combination of multiple choice questions and short-answer question examinations, essays, posters, presentations, reflective portfolios, critical appraisal of literature and, if the full MSc is taken, the dissertation, including an oral presentation.

Members of the planning and teaching team come from multidisciplinary backgrounds and have considerable experience of implementing and teaching on Master's level courses. The team also has a range and depth of experience in both service delivery and research in rehabilitation.

We have considerable experience in neurological and elderly rehabilitation and have contributed or been responsible for service delivery in both acute and community healthcare, as well as the voluntary and independent sector.

There is also specific expertise in the rehabilitation of individuals with stroke, dementia, acute brain injury, pain management, cardiac and chronic pulmonary disease, falls, progressive neurological disease and palliative care.
