Organisations operate within increasingly unpredictable, competitive, constrained and demanding environments. Information is crucial to their success as it is required for decision making at all levels. Consequently there is a need to understand the strategic importance of information and develop agile, effective and secure ways to exploit it to its full potential. To do this, effective information capability management must be developed throughout the organisation so that the right information is available to the right people at the right time in an effective, efficient and secure manner.

An appropriate infrastructure is required to enable effective information capability management to address strategic business needs. This is dependent on joined-up systems of processes, technology and appropriately skilled, competent and motivated people focused on delivering clearly understood business benefit. The Information Capability Management (ICM) MSc has been developed to address these important issues.

Overview

Skilled professionals are needed to enable organisations to realise the strategic benefits that successfully exploiting information can provide. Success in business of all types and in all sectors, both public and private, is dependant on:

•Understanding the value of information as a strategic asset
•Developing agile, effective and efficient systems that make this information available.
•Countering cyber threats with appropriate cyber security.

The internationally recognised Information Capability Management course successfully supports the development of these professionals. Students from Government departments, industry and other organisations within the UK and internationally come together to study and discuss issues and develop skills that will enable solutions now and in the future.

Key goals of the course are to provide students with postgraduate level education in order to:

•Develop in individuals an awareness of the management, user and supplier communities
•Recognise the stakeholder roles, needs and expectations within these communities
•Enable effective communication and a shared understanding between these stakeholders in order to meet capability objectives

Course overview

MSc students must complete a taught phase consisting of twelve modules, followed by an individual dissertation in a relevant topic.

PgDip students are required to undertake the same taught phase as the MSc, but without the individual dissertation.

PgCert students must complete the core module (Foundations of Information Systems) together with five other modules.

Students are allocated a supervisor and have access to subject matter experts to support them in the project phase.

Assessment

All those involved in the wider defence enterprise, across government, military, industry, science and technology have changing needs and aspirations for defence. Agility, resilience, continuity of supply, skills and innovation now complement the continuing need to balance cost, time and performance in everything we do.

The Centre for Systems Engineering has been at the forefront of developing systems engineering education for the past fifteen years, blending the breadth of systems thinking with the rigour of systems engineering and closely integrating this within acquisition management.

You will develop knowledge and skills in understanding the wider context of defence capability and guiding the development of operational, support and enabling business solutions which both deliver cost effective outcomes and contribute to the attributes of defence as a whole.

Course overview

The course is modular and you will accumulate credits for each module you successfully complete:

- Full modules are each worth 10 credits.
- The Advanced Systems Engineering Workshop is worth 20 credits.

The course structure has been devised to give the maximum amount of flexibility for you to create your own learning pathway whilst ensuring that the fundamental principles of systems engineering are compulsory.

- The PgCert comprises 60 credits of which 40 are for compulsory modules and 20 are for elective modules.
- The PgDip comprises 120 credits of which 70 are for compulsory modules and 50 are for elective modules.
- The MSc comprises 200 credits of which 70 are for compulsory modules, 50 credits are for elective modules and 80 are for the thesis associated with the Individual Project.

Individual Project

The MSc Organisational Resilience is designed to meet the requirements of industry and the professionals who are either currently employed in it or who seek to develop advanced capability. There are many currently working in the sector who have long-term experience and are seeking validation and evidence of this through the achievement of postgraduate qualification.

The programme provides an opportunity for advancement to those already employed in resilience roles, for example as security, crisis or business continuity managers or heads of function, who wish to broaden their industry knowledge base and management and analytical skills with a view to enhancing their career prospects. If you are involved in any aspect of defence acquisition, then this course is relevant to you. Whether you are involved in establishing or managing capability requirements; engaged in procurement, commercial or contracting activities; or developing and implementing support solutions, this course will provide the underpinning knowledge and develop the critical thinking skills required for effective management of defence acquisition. This course offers three pathways - General Acquisition, Through Life Support and Commercial. The MSc programme also provides recognition by a number of professional bodies including the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply (CIPS), as this is a CIPS-accredited course, accreditation by the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT), and, eligibility for a Chartered Management Institute Diploma.

Overview

To be successful in the defence acquisition community requires a clear understanding of the fundamental issues that impact on the establishment of sound commercial relationships; the development of integrated acquisition solutions and the delivery of operational excellence. We aim to develop the ‘T’ shaped individual, with a broad appreciation of strategic issues, and a greater understanding of defence acquisition. The course provides and develops the skills to critically analyse management theories (acquisition), which can be applied to modern, increasingly commercialised, national and international defence acquisition management, in order to enhance the quality of decision making. Face to face teaching will be delivered on campus for two half days each week. Why take a professional doctorate in policy research and practice?

In all areas of government and public administration – whether in local government, national civil services or international organisations – the world of policy making is changing fast. There is an increasing recognition of the need for a secure and transparent evidence base on which to make policy, but there are also a range of approaches and methods that policy makers can use to assess the evidence base and consider the likely impact of different policies. This Doctorate will enhance professional capability and critical reflection on the theories, methods and practices of policy making.

The course involves a blend of face-to-face and distance learning. The academic coherence of the course is built around a ‘hub and spoke’ model comprising two core policy analysis units (in Transformational Policy and Practice and Policy Research Methodology) and two specialist units to enable students to broaden and deepen their understanding of policy research across a range of disciplines. You are required to complete four ‘taught’ units over three years of study – two core and two optional – followed by a supervised piece of original research over up to three years.

The Professional Doctorate in Policy Research and Practice is designed to:

Course structure

The Professional Doctorate in Policy Research and Practice is built around a part-time cohort model. You will advance through the course with a cohort of other participants from a range of countries, sectors and organisations. Teaching is focused on a two-week residential held in early September each year, with subsequent virtual seminars, tutorials, and supervision throughout the rest of the year.

This structure will enable you to interact, learn, and network with a stable cohort of participants, while ensuring the flexibility to continue your own professional career.

The course is structured into two stages: the taught stage and the thesis stage.

If your circumstances change and you are unable to complete the course, there are alternative qualifications that may be awarded depending on the number of credits accumulated.

- Taught stage:
The taught stage is based on four units. In the first year, two compulsory core units provide advanced training in policy analysis and research methods. The first year is designed to equip you with the knowledge and capability to understand and use a range of research methodologies, novel analytical frameworks and toolkits to address key issues within a broad policy context. The two core generic analysis units include:

- Transformational Policy and Practice – to introduce you to theoretical understandings of ‘policy’ and policy making and how they relate to practice. This will include a series of case studies of policy making and implementation from different countries

- Policy Research Methodology – to develop your knowledge and understanding of the methodologies (philosophic frameworks) employed in policy research, their advantages and disadvantages, as well as the merits of particular quantitative and qualitative methods.

Each of these generic units carry 18 credits and are assessed with an 8,000 assignment or equivalent. Successful completion of these units would normally entitle you to the PG Certificate exit award if appropriate.

- Specialist streams:
Over the subsequent two years you elect two specialised units, relevant to their field of practice, from a choice of up to four units. These are designed to enable you to develop and hone specific interests towards the conduct of supervised research: current optional units are listed below. The five initial units are:

- international development policy
- education policy
- health policy
- technology policy
- social policy (awaiting final approval).

Each specialist unit carries 18 credits and is assessed by an 8,000 word assignment.

You will be asked to choose a specialist unit in the first year, while undertaking your core modules so that teaching resources can be planned for the following year.

- Research enquiry:
You will spend the final three years of your study developing a supervised research enquiry. Supervision is primarily provided virtually over this period but it would normally be expected that you adhere to a minimum number of face-to-face contact hours. We also provide other online support for you during this time including webinars and online forums.

The sponsor company designs and manufactures energy-efficient control and monitoring systems for the refrigeration industry. The proposed innovation adds an exciting new subsystem to optimise and significantly improve the accuracy and efficiency of the refrigeration process. It could be applied in a number of formats worldwide to deliver: lower energy consumption; reduced equipment operation; reduced equipment maintenance and lower costs for retailers. The technology has the potential to save mega-tonnes of carbon and significantly contribute to the UK’s climate change targets by 2030. In this project, you will apply your electronics and electrical engineering skills to: developing a suitable and commercially viable hardware sensor; verifying sensor placement and analysing digital signals.

1.   Knowledge of DSP tools such as MATLAB, Audacity or similar.

2.   Skilled in electronics design for sensor interfaces.

3.   Capability to use DSP tools and build interface circuits to micro processors.

Qualifications:

First degree (2:1 or above) in Electronic and Electrical Engineering, Control Engineering, Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering or Mathematics (essential).

You will be a motivated and dynamic person, with a demonstrable capability to conduct independent research.

Applicants whose first language is not English must provide evidence of proficiency to IELTS 6.5 with no less than 5.5 in each band or equivalent.

Funding

This studentship attracts a tax exempt stipend of £15,000 per annum. Post graduate fees are funded for UK/EU based students. International students will be required to make an additional contribution to their post graduate fees.
