The Information Capability Management (ICM) MSc has been developed to address these important issues.

All those involved in the wider defence enterprise, across government, military, industry, science and technology have changing needs and aspirations for defence. Agility, resilience, continuity of supply, skills and innovation now complement the continuing need to balance cost, time and performance in everything we do.

The Centre for Systems Engineering has been at the forefront of developing systems engineering education for the past fifteen years, blending the breadth of systems thinking with the rigour of systems engineering and closely integrating this within acquisition management.

You will develop knowledge and skills in understanding the wider context of defence capability and guiding the development of operational, support and enabling business solutions which both deliver cost effective outcomes and contribute to the attributes of defence as a whole.

Course overview

The course is modular and you will accumulate credits for each module you successfully complete:

- Full modules are each worth 10 credits.
- The Advanced Systems Engineering Workshop is worth 20 credits.

The course structure has been devised to give the maximum amount of flexibility for you to create your own learning pathway whilst ensuring that the fundamental principles of systems engineering are compulsory.

- The PgCert comprises 60 credits of which 40 are for compulsory modules and 20 are for elective modules.
- The PgDip comprises 120 credits of which 70 are for compulsory modules and 50 are for elective modules.
- The MSc comprises 200 credits of which 70 are for compulsory modules, 50 credits are for elective modules and 80 are for the thesis associated with the Individual Project.

Whether you are involved in establishing or managing capability requirements; engaged in procurement, commercial or contracting activities; or developing and implementing support solutions, this course will provide the underpinning knowledge and develop the critical thinking skills required for effective management of defence acquisition. In all areas of government and public administration – whether in local government, national civil services or international organisations – the world of policy making is changing fast. There is an increasing recognition of the need for a secure and transparent evidence base on which to make policy, but there are also a range of approaches and methods that policy makers can use to assess the evidence base and consider the likely impact of different policies. This Doctorate will enhance professional capability and critical reflection on the theories, methods and practices of policy making.

The course involves a blend of face-to-face and distance learning. The academic coherence of the course is built around a ‘hub and spoke’ model comprising two core policy analysis units (in Transformational Policy and Practice and Policy Research Methodology) and two specialist units to enable students to broaden and deepen their understanding of policy research across a range of disciplines. You will advance through the course with a cohort of other participants from a range of countries, sectors and organisations. Teaching is focused on a two-week residential held in early September each year, with subsequent virtual seminars, tutorials, and supervision throughout the rest of the year.

This structure will enable you to interact, learn, and network with a stable cohort of participants, while ensuring the flexibility to continue your own professional career.

The course is structured into two stages: the taught stage and the thesis stage.

If your circumstances change and you are unable to complete the course, there are alternative qualifications that may be awarded depending on the number of credits accumulated.

- Taught stage:
The taught stage is based on four units. In the first year, two compulsory core units provide advanced training in policy analysis and research methods. The first year is designed to equip you with the knowledge and capability to understand and use a range of research methodologies, novel analytical frameworks and toolkits to address key issues within a broad policy context. The two core generic analysis units include:

- Transformational Policy and Practice – to introduce you to theoretical understandings of ‘policy’ and policy making and how they relate to practice. This will include a series of case studies of policy making and implementation from different countries

- Policy Research Methodology – to develop your knowledge and understanding of the methodologies (philosophic frameworks) employed in policy research, their advantages and disadvantages, as well as the merits of particular quantitative and qualitative methods.

Each of these generic units carry 18 credits and are assessed with an 8,000 assignment or equivalent. Successful completion of these units would normally entitle you to the PG Certificate exit award if appropriate.

- Specialist streams:
Over the subsequent two years you elect two specialised units, relevant to their field of practice, from a choice of up to four units. These are designed to enable you to develop and hone specific interests towards the conduct of supervised research: current optional units are listed below. The five initial units are:

- international development policy
- education policy
- health policy
- technology policy
- social policy (awaiting final approval).

Each specialist unit carries 18 credits and is assessed by an 8,000 word assignment.

You will be asked to choose a specialist unit in the first year, while undertaking your core modules so that teaching resources can be planned for the following year.

- Research enquiry:
You will spend the final three years of your study developing a supervised research enquiry. Supervision is primarily provided virtually over this period but it would normally be expected that you adhere to a minimum number of face-to-face contact hours. HRM and Organisational Capability Development

Contemporary Issues in Leadership and Management
The data centre industry is a dynamic environment, with new issues emerging as technology develops, political influences change and the global economic situation evolves. These factors all impact on day-to-day leadership and management within the industry. This module will help you to build your own understanding of issues that influence the industry, develop your responses and grow as a thought leader.

Research Methods for Business and Management
Research skills are important in business as well as academia. Producing high quality research can drive innovation and enterprise and form a crucial part of the professional’s portfolio of capability. This module will enable you to develop the key project management and data analysis skills needed to deliver Masters Level research.

Post Graduate Major Project
This final module builds on the knowledge that you have developed through the course, giving you a chance to produce an in-depth academic study into a topic of your choice. Who is it for?

The course is designed for those who wish to extend their capability for an accelerated early career in cyber/information security. It will prepare you for a successful career in the various roles directly and indirectly connected to the world of computer, network and information security.

The course would suit students who have completed a first degree in a computing subject (e.g. computer science, business computing) or a numerate subject (e.g. applied mathematics, engineering, physics) if that covered a significant computing component.

Objectives

The primary objective of MSc Cyber Security is to practise security with an interdisciplinary shared coursework that spans across all security related modules.
-In semester 1, you become an ethical hacker. You are challenged to identify flaws in computer system by breaking its crypto components and retrieve sensitive information of an e-commerce company.
-In semester 2 you become an investigator. You are challenged to analyse network traffic, logs and detect attacks in a company's network. It is essential to trace hackers and bring them to justice with concrete proofs and reporting.

Academic facilities

The Department of Computer Science has invested in the design and implementation of a virtual laboratory (CybSec) for the purpose and needs of the cyber security course. In particular, CybSec is a virtual networked lab where hacking, penetration testing, malware analysis, security monitoring are taking place in a controlled and isolated environment without violating City's IT Policy. In addition, the security analysis of practical cryptosystems requires high computational power and resources that are used for code breaking. CybSec lab supports our teaching efforts and enhances our research strengths.

Placements

You will be offered the opportunity to complete up to six months of professional experience as part of your degree.

Our longstanding internship scheme gives you the chance to apply the knowledge and skills gained from your taught modules within a real business environment. An internship also provides you with professional development opportunities that enhance your technical skills and business knowledge.

Internships delivered by City, University of London offer an exceptional opportunity to help you stand out in the competitive IT industry job market. The structure of the course extends the period for dissertation submission to January, allowing you to work full-time for up to six months. You will be supported by our outstanding Professional Liaison Unit (PLU) should you wish to consider undertaking this route.

The Cyber Security programme also offers internships in collaboration with our alliance of companies in security related jobs.

Teaching and learning

The MSc in Cyber Security is a one year full-time course. On completion of eight taught modules and an individual project you will be awarded a Master of Science (MSc) degree.

The teaching and learning methods used are such that the levels of both specialisation of content and autonomy of learning increase as you progress through the programme. This progress will be guided by active researchers in cyber security, culminating in an individual project, an original piece of research, conducted largely independently with appropriate academic supervision.

The standard format is that taught modules are delivered through a series of 20 hours of lectures and 10 hours of tutorials/laboratory sessions.

Lectures are normally used to:
-Present and explain the theoretical concepts underpinning a particular subject
-Highlight the most significant aspects of a module's syllabus
-Indicate additional topics and resources for private study.

Tutorials are used to help you develop skills in applying the concepts covered in the lectures of the relevant module, normally in practical problem solving contexts. Laboratory sessions serve a similar purpose as the tutorials but their strategy is to demonstrate application of concepts and techniques through the use of state-of-the-art software development tools and environments.

You will be expected to undertake independent study and do substantial coursework assignments for each module, amounting approximately to 120 hours per module. The coursework takes many forms, including programs, theoretical work, and essays, and is primarily formative, but also contributes to module assessment.

Coursework will be used in a coherent manner across all of the security specific modules to ensure that you will also get appropriate hands-on operational experience of relevant aspects of cyber-security, including testing and analysis. Some of this course work may be organised in ways that shadow larger scale exercises, such as the Cyber-Security Challenge. The individual project (full-time) is carried out over the summer period, and if done without a placement, lasts approximately 14 weeks or 600 hours. If undertaken within an industrial or research placement, the project period extends to up to six months.

This course covers core areas of masters level computer science, such as research methods and scientific presentation and analysis skills.

It will enable you to specialise in some aspects of the area of cyber security with modules such as cryptography, network security, information security management, security audit and certification. You will engage with researchers to develop your scientific knowledge and skills. We offer options within the programme that allows you to develop your expertise in cyber crime, digital forensics, socio-technical aspects of security.

There are in total eight taught modules; six core and two elective modules with a full time individual project completed over the summer. You will choose electives to tailor the programme to your chosen career path.

In particular, the project component gives you an opportunity to carry out an extended piece of work at the cutting edge of games technology under the supervision of one of our specialist academic and research staff. Internship-based projects are also available.

The MSc Human Resource Management is approved by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) as meeting the knowledge requirements that are pre-requisite for Chartered Membership or Chartered Fellowship of the CIPD. This is the gold-standard for the HR profession with the CIPD having around 135,000 chartered and studying members in the UK.

• Research methods and Professional Skills
• Dissertation

With our specialist elective modules you can develop skills and knowledge in an area of your own particular interest. Whilst completing your dissertation in your second year you will also undertake three elective modules. The specialist options we offer may include:

Graduates from our previous HRM Masters programme report that the learning has enhanced their credibility at work and improved their career prospects, for example, former students have gone on to establish their own businesses, study for a PHD and gaining promotions

Entry requirements:
Applicants should have a first degree or other qualification at an equivalent level or be able to provide sufficient evidence of capability to successfully complete a programme of study at Masters level. Applicants should also have relevant work experience related to management and/or human resource management.

Applicants with educational qualifications at a lower level than a first degree will be asked to provide some evidence of capability to study on a Masters programme. Typically these applicants might be asked to complete a short assignment that would be assessed at interview by the Programme Leader. If applicants have completed the Certificate in Personnel Practice or the Certificate in Human Resourcing Practice they would be assessed on an appropriate piece of work from that programme.
