Programme detail

The MA Choreography is a one year (full time) or two year (part time) taught programme, culminating in an independent research project.

The MFA Choreography is a two year full time programme. It shares the first year taught programme with the MA. An extended independent project forms the second year, providing time for in-depth research. MFA applicants should demonstrate their capacity to undertake self-directed research and propose a project that warrants the depth and breadth afforded by an extended time frame.

The choice between an MA or an MFA programme of study will depend upon your prior experience and future aspirations.

Purpose

• Professional choreographers wishing to re-invigorate, broaden or consolidate their practice

• Emerging choreographers intending to interrogate their practice and develop independent choreographic perspectives

• Recently graduated dance artists showing a commitment to develop their choreographic practice

Format

The taught programme of the MA (first year of the MFA) encourages you to explore your current practice. You will encounter interdisciplinary perspectives and collaborative practices, creating work across a range of settings and media. You will be challenged to experiment, take risks and continuously create: developing your individual artistic voice.

For MA students, the year culminates in an independent project, allowing you to build on the ideas encountered in the programme and undertake self-directed research, experimentation and reflection.

The MFA Extended Project is a self-directed module during which you consolidate your independent choreographic perspectives and practice. You will create and present a substantial body of work that evidences your capacity to research and realise your ideas as a coherent choreographic project.

Careers

Recent graduates have worked on and choreographed productions all over Europe, including research at KOLT, productions at FLOTA Slovenia, Pro Progressione in Europe and other companies in the UK and internationally. Alumni of the programme include: freelance performers and choreographers; founders and co-founders of independent dance projects; theatre and opera directors; assistant choreographers with major dance companies; PhD students and lecturers in colleges and universities.

Format

Our carefully devised programmes examine qualitative and quantitative aspects of dance practice through a range of scientific disciplines. Application of theory to dance practice is essential at Trinity Laban, and Dance Science is no exception. Sessions frequently take place in the dance studio or involve practical and hands-on experience with testing equipment in the lab.

Dance Science can be undertaken as an MSc (one year) or, in a programme new this year, as an MFA (two years), with the second year dedicated to research. NB: Participants on the MSc programme can transfer to the MFA programme subject to application, and this should be discussed with the Programme Leader before completion of the 4 taught modules.

Year One (MSc and MFA)

This MSc offers a taught programme that uses academic knowledge to inform operational hospitality management practice.

Our worldwide industry connections enable our postgraduate students to study the hospitality industry from an entrepreneurial, operational and strategic management perspective. You not only address core business and management subjects, but also hospitality as a global phenomenon and how it is consumed by cultures and societies.

We are an affiliate member of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), which informs our teaching and your learning.

The course is suitable if you are looking to convert from another subject area and pursue a future career in hospitality or if you already have a grounding in hospitality or related subject areas such as business, management, events, tourism or sport.

Course structure

Full-time students attend workshops two days per week, while the part-time route usually requires one day per week. Some modules may be delivered intensively over several consecutive days.

The course is delivered through a variety of approaches including lectures, presentations, tutorials, case studies group work and live projects, all with an emphasis on interactive learning.

For international students, the MSc also offers an extended masters route with English language study for between two and sixth months before the course begins.

Areas of study

Management subjects address key issues of strategy, marketing, operations, human resources and financial planning, which are studied in parallel with international hospitality development. You acquire research skills as part of the course, which you can then apply to academic or industrial projects.

Professional-Based Learning Module:

All credit-based postgraduate courses at the School of Sport and Service Management offer the Professional-Based Learning module.

The module offers you an opportunity to undertake practical experience in a work environment and gain invaluable first-hand knowledge. It is designed to help you engage with the process of planning and delivering expertise in practice, and to reflect upon and take steps to improve your academic, personal and professional skills.

In Semester 1 (September–January) you will have classes on CV development, interview skills, target setting, reflective practice and experiential learning, leading to 100 hours of professional experience in Semester 2 (February–June). This experience could take the form of a part-time job, an unpaid internship, a volunteering opportunity in the university or time as a mentee in your chosen industry. You can also take this module as part of a live consultancy in connection with one of your tourism, sport, hospitality or event modules, either in the UK or a School of Sport and Service Management project overseas.

Our school-based Employability Hub will be on hand to assist you in securing an experience that best meets your career goals and aspirations. Professional experience will enhance your practice and academic knowledge, and many of our students have started their careers with their placement organisation.

The Culinary Arts Studio is a state-of-the-art commercial kitchen, restaurant and cafe available for use by hospitality students. It provides an outstanding opportunity to observe and record social interaction within a hospitality setting.

Davies Dance and Independent Dance, the Dance Professional Practice focus enables experienced practitioners to develop their artistic practice in a stimulating environment of intellectual and creative inquiry. We support mid-career artists to: reflect on their body of professional experience and its role in their ongoing learning; engage in intensive studio-based experiences with significant artists and a skilled peer group; deepen their own practice as performers/makers; develop their understanding of a range of research methodologies within the arts; and pursue their own area of artistic interest.

For MA students, the year culminates in an independent research project, allowing you to reflect on dance practice in its many forms, and the social, cultural, aesthetic and political contexts in which performance practice is located.

The MFA Extended Project is an extensive, self-directed module during which you consolidate your independent creative practice. You will create and present a substantial body of work that evidences your capacity to research, develop, realise and identify appropriate modes of presentation for your ideas.

Career progression

All graduates use their creative research findings to inform their practice in whichever professional setting they enter. Some graduates go on to work freelance, creating and performing their own work. Some graduates go on to become dance industry professionals, taking roles within arts management, and others go on to further study.

At the start of the academic year, you will be invited to Welcome Week, an intensive introduction to study and life in Edinburgh. Some events are especially for international students new to Scotland and the UK, but everything is open to all.

In the first weeks, the School provides a general orientation to research skills and to wider opportunities for training and support.

From your first days as a PhD or MPhil student, you will work one-to-one with your primary research supervisor.

Your progress will be tracked, through regular supervisions and milestone reviews, to ensure that you get the support you need to bring your project to fruition.

You will be part of the research seminar in Biblical Studies, to which visiting speakers are invited and to which postgraduates present work-in-progress.

You can also engage with the work of OTSEM, an international network of Old Testament researchers.

OTSEM

You will be able to follow taught courses that contribute to your interests and research needs, and can also take advantage of opportunities to learn ancient and modern languages.

If you are a PhD student, after successful completion of your first year, you will be eligible to apply for tutoring opportunities, to gain teaching experience.

A University review (2015) commended the Graduate School for providing excellent support: responsive to student feedback; proactive in helping new postgraduates to adjust to their studies and to life in Scotland; enthusiastic and practical in promoting career development. The postgraduate student committee works closely with the School to make the research student experience the best it can be.

Facilities

The School of Divinity, one of the largest centres for the study of religion in the United Kingdom, is located in the historic setting of New College, close to Edinburgh Castle and overlooking Princes Street.

Resources for research are excellent. You can draw on the outstanding holdings of New College Library, the University of Edinburgh’s main library, and the nearby National Library of Scotland. New College Library has one of the largest theology collections in the UK, with more than a quarter of a million items and a large and rich manuscript collection. The University library exceeds 2.25 million volumes. The National Library of Scotland – a ‘legal deposit’ library like the British Library in London and the university libraries of Oxford and Cambridge – is just around the corner.

The School provides an extensive programme of weekly research seminars and special guest lectures. In addition, three research centres provide a special focus for activity: the Centre for the Study of Christian Origins; the Centre for Theology and Public Issues; the Centre for the Study of World Christianity.

You will have access to excellent study facilities, dedicated to postgraduates. PhD and MPhil students have access 24/7, and can request an allocated desk. Masters by Research students have shared study space. All areas have printing/scanning and computer facilities. The main postgraduate study wing has a kitchen. New College has an on-site cafe that is open during term time.

Masters by Research

If you have academic training in theology or religious studies (or another relevant subject), and would like to develop your interest with a focus on a particular area, the Masters by Research may interest you.

This programme can be taken either as a Master of Theology by Research (MTh by Research) or as a Master of Science by Research (MScR); the difference is only in the name.

You can study full-time (one year) or part-time (two years). Your pattern of study can either be three supervised research essays followed by a 15,000 word dissertation, or a 30,000 word dissertation. Most students take the ‘research essays + shorter dissertation’ path. All students receive research training.

Trinity Laban is the only institution where intensive, conservatoire-level art form training sits alongside applied study in community dance. The programme has four key strands:

• Artistic development. Progress your dance skills and artistic practice in a world-class conservatoire with first-class teachers and facilities

Assessment

Achievement of the Diploma in Dance Studies requires you to pass 120 credits as detailed above. Each component you select will be assessed separately, some by coursework assessment, others by written or practical assignments.

As a condition of acceptance onto the Trinity Laban Diploma in Dance Studies, overseas students are required to register for the ATCL Performance Arts (Contemporary Dance) qualification accredited by Trinity College London (TCL). This will require you to go through a registration process at the commencement of the academic year, and an assessment day at the end of your programme. Entry for this additional qualification is also open to, but optional, for UK/EU students.

Careers

There are a range of possibilities, depending at what stage in their training / career people enter the programme. GDDS graduates work as independent artists, performers, choreographers and teachers. The programme may lead to further dance training or study at Masters level.

Programme structure

The MSc in Diabetes is a 12 month, full time programme. The programme is made up of eight compulsory courses, two are of 20 credits (one in each semester) and 6 are of 10 credits (four in the first semester and 2 in the second semester). In addition, students will select two optional 10 credit courses from a choice of six in the second semester. A dissertation/research project of 60 credits is undertaken to fulfil the requirements of a Masters degree. The taught courses will be undertaken in the period October to March during the academic session, with the dissertation commencing in June with submission in mid August.

Dissertation

To fulfil the requirements of a Masters degree, students must undertake an independent piece of research in the area of diabetes under the supervision of a project supervisor. Projects may take a number of different formats including a literature review, meta-analysis, data audit or secondary analysis, laboratory-based project, clinical/human volunteer based investigation. The student must then submit a report demonstrating an in-depth, critical understanding and evaluation of the project and deliver an oral presentation summarising their project.

Career prospects

Graduates may wish to pursue a career in diabetes clinical research entering clinical translational diabetes research or commercial industrial research. Other opportunities for diabetes specialists are available in education, public health and professions allied to medicine. The School of Divinity, one of the largest centres for the study of religion in the United Kingdom, is located in the historic setting of New College, close to Edinburgh Castle and overlooking Princes Street.

Resources for research are excellent. You can draw on the outstanding holdings of New College Library, the University of Edinburgh’s main library, and the nearby National Library of Scotland. New College Library has one of the largest theology collections in the UK, with more than a quarter of a million items and a large and rich manuscript collection. The National Library of Scotland – a ‘legal deposit’ library like the British Library in London and the university libraries of Oxford and Cambridge – is just around the corner.

The School provides an extensive programme of weekly research seminars and special guest lectures. In addition, three research centres provide a special focus for activity: the Centre for the Study of Christian Origins; the Centre for Theology and Public Issues; the Centre for the Study of World Christianity.

If you have academic training in theology or religious studies (or another relevant subject), and would like to develop your interest with a focus on a particular area, the Masters by Research may interest you.

This programme can be taken either as a ‘Master of Theology by Research’ or as a ‘Master of Science by Research’ – the difference is only in the name.

You can study full-time (one year) or part-time (two years). Your pattern of study can either be three supervised research essays followed by a 15,000 word dissertation, or a 30,000 word dissertation. Most students take the ‘research essays + shorter dissertation’ path. All students receive research training.

Your employment should require some analysis of business situations, in the private or public sector. Samples of your work will form the basis of reflection and learning projects, guided by a personal mentor.

- MSc in Business Analysis & Consulting
Students who complete the Diploma and gain sufficient marks to proceed to the MSc will be expected to undertake a project. The project will be integrated with your employment. You'll have individual personal mentoring to guide you in reflection and learning.

Technical requirements

To undertake this course you need to have:
- Modern PC running Windows Vista or higher, web cam, headset with microphone
- Minimum 2Mb/sec broadband connection
- Microsoft Excel 2010 or higher

NB: Some of the course software is Windows-only and will not run under Linux or on Macintosh computers so use of a PC or PC-emulation software is essential if these operating systems are used.

Start dates

You can start the Certificate programme in October or April. The Diploma course usually runs between September and May, though there is some flexibility with this. It's followed by the project which has a flexible timetable.
Normally, a student should be able to complete the MSc programme in around two and a half years. Please contact us if you need advice about the best start date for you.

The Pre-Masters Programme is a preparation course for international students (non EU/UK) who do not meet the entry requirements for a Masters degree at the University of Strathclyde. The Pre-Masters programme provides progression to a number of degree options.

All classes are taught using material presented via the internet. Classes are supported by faculty members who also teach on the full-time course. They'll guide and support discussion via forums.

Unlike many other online courses, you're not simply given your materials and left to get on with it. You're a full student of the University of Strathclyde. Tutor support is equal to that on our other, face-to-face, courses. Tutors and support staff include lecturers and academics whose prime concern is your progress through the course.

Continuously updated, dynamic, interactive online materials:
We constantly update and revise our material.

Online group discussions:
Group discussion is an integral part of the learning process on the all of our distance programmes. Some issues are developed best by peer discussion, often with tutor involvment.

Live question & answer sessions:
Classes often have a "Question& Answer" session, broadcast live by video, audio and text. This is an opportunity for students to ask questions in a group forum. These sessions are archived on the website for those unable to be present at the time.

Live conferencing:
Several sessions of the Postgraduate Diploma are conducted using live conferencing and online collaboration software such as Elluminate and FlashMeeting.

Assessment

Each module includes two pieces of assessment. Around half of these will be assignments and the other half will be by examination at local centres.
