The Master programme consists of three pillars: Applied research, Interdisciplinary Assignments and Professional Skills Development & Ethics. These three pillars are based on the view that the future Business Professional needs to be equipped with critical thinking skills along with analytical skills to be able to handle complex issues. The interdisciplinary assignments enhance cooperation and communication skills with professionals from various disciplines and backgrounds. The Professional Skills Development & Ethics focuses on the ability to reflect on one’s own behaviour and development and to adapt accordingly. The Master programme kicks off with an intensive week where you will meet fellow students and experience the four core disciplines of the programme, while acquiring intensive training on your research skills. During the following weeks you will work in interdisciplinary teams on an assignment centered around the theme Sustainability.
Within the Interdisciplinary Innovation Assignments you will work on real-life complex issues from the professional field. It includes a dynamic combination of co-creation with fellow-students and the professional field, academic depth provided by (guest) lectures and professorships, and an evidence-based approach with insights from different disciplinary perspectives. Both (guest) lectures from experts in the field and the Community of Learners will support you throughout the Master programme. Your knowledge development is enhanced by the six ample themes and accompanying topics, that encompass the core disciplines of the Master programme: Marketing, Finance, Human Resource Management and Business & IT:
The PGCE Business Studies (14-19) is a nine month innovative, intensive and unique course preparing graduates for the demands of teaching the 14-19 age range in both the secondary and lifelong learning sectors.
The PGCE in business studies aims to you to make the transition from subject expert to teacher/lecturer. The course will develop your practical skills and knowledge to be able to relate this to the wider educational responsibilities of being a teacher/lecturer.
You will be awarded a PGCE and recommended for Qualified Teacher Status, enabling you to teach in schools. And also designed to provide a strong foundation for working in the lifelong learning sector, especially further education.
The course is organised in partnership with schools and further education colleges where you spend 24 out of the 36 weeks teaching.
On your PGCE 14-19 course here at Canterbury Christ Church University you will study three University-based modules Curriculum Studies, Professional Studies and Enhanced Studies and one placement-based module Professional Practice.
The course provides you with an engaging and relevant professional training that enables you to transform your business studies expertise into competent and effective classroom teaching and develops your understanding of how young people engage and learn in business subjects. You will also learn how to critically evaluate and enhance your teaching to improve quality and effectiveness in the classroom.
The key feature of your PGCE is that all learning experiences and opportunities you will have on the course are designed to inform and complement each other culminating in the development of your academic and professional practice as a teacher/lecturer. So you will be prepared initially, and then have the opportunity to reflect on your teaching placement experiences and will have a focus on planning and preparing to teach, assessment for learning, managing behaviour and team working skills.
You will also be supported in developing your own teaching in an independent environment with a constant focus on guided self-improvement. You will gain confidence in your ability to reflect on your own practical teaching experience and develop important skills such as critical self-reflection while improving your subject and curriculum knowledge in business studies.
The PGCE Business Studies (14-19) is aimed at postgraduates who wish to inspire and motivate teenagers to understand the business world in which they live and to help them make informed decisions about their choices as citizens, employees and consumers.
We recruit graduates who have a degree in a business or business-related subject or in some exceptional cases an unrelated degree if they have a significant employment background in business and/or industry.
We welcome candidates with experience in the commercial and business world, particularly where this work has enhanced their knowledge, skills and understanding in business.
The course is uniquely set up for postgraduates to gain experience teaching, learning and assessment both in a school setting and in college or sixth form environments.

Your three University-based modules assessed through small-scale research assignments of 4,000 words each and offer you the opportunity to gain 20 Masters level credits in each of these modules. You are supported through each of these by means of tutorials with your University tutors.
Both your two Professional Practice placements are formatively and then summatively assessed through the teaching files you have created, your reflective Learning Journal, regular lesson observations by the teachers/lecturers you work with on a day-to-day basis, your Curriculum Mentors in your teaching placements and your University tutor. There is also an Interim and Final report from both your teaching placements.
As your PGCE allows you to engage with the secondary and lifelong learning sectors the opportunities to work in a wide range of contexts where learning and teaching is at the heart of a particular organisation.
The majority of our graduates are now working in various establishments in the secondary or further education sectors and in a variety of capacities including subject tutors and mentors. Some graduates choose to teach in the private sector and others choose to follow the special educational needs route and occasionally young offenders’ institutions. Furthermore, for those of you who are adventurous there are many opportunities for teaching the subject overseas.
In addition to being employed in an organisation and capacity which you find exciting there is also the opportunity for you to continue your studies in education through participating in Masters level programmes. School Direct (Tuition Fee) is a route into teaching at both primary and secondary levels. Trainees join other student teachers on the established Business Studies PGCE programme at the UCL Institute of Education (IOE), whilst undertaking their teaching experience at their host school or alliance.
Students will understand how business is taught in schools, how pupils learn and make sense of the evolving nature of business. This is reflected in the range of business related courses that are now offered by schools, sixth forms and colleges, with the focus in some instances on entrepreneurship, work skills and new business technologies.
Students will be joining the largest Business PGCE programme in the country, allowing them to benefit from a team of tutors with a wide range of expertise of business, both inside and outside of the classroom. Students will also be able to develop strong peer networks, share ideas, resources and advice amongst your cohort of fellow PGCE Business students.
Students undertake two Master’s-level (level 7) modules of 30 credits each, totaling 60 credits. These can be carried forward onto full Master’s programmes at the IOE.
The Secondary PGCE consists of three core modules: two Master’s-level modules, which are assessed through written assignments, and the Professional Practice module, which is assessed by the observation of practical teaching in placement schools.
Completion of the Professional Practice module and the two level 7 (Master’s level) modules (60 credits) will result in the award of a Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE). Completion of the Professional Practice module and one or two level 6 (undergraduate/Bachelor’s level) modules, will lead to the Professional Graduate Certificate of Education (PgCE).
You will spend most of your time (120 days) in schools, working with business studies mentors who support you through your school placements. The Professional Practice module is assessed through these placements, associated tasks and a portfolio.
Teaching and learning
The programme is delivered via keynote lectures, subject lectures, seminars, workshops, tutorials and directed study days at the IOE, as well as time spent in placement at the host school or alliance. Assessment is by the observation of practical teaching, assignments and a portfolio (which links into continuing professional development in the induction year).

Some are working as teachers of business and economics education, while others have jobs as middle and senior managers in schools. Graduates in this area can also be found working as education officers, initial teacher educators, teachers in international schools and as entrepreneurs running businesses offering consultancy in schools. The majority of graduates find employment in London schools, with many gaining promotions and responsibilities early in their teaching careers.
Graduates of the Secondary PGCE programme are highly employable and sought after by schools and colleges in London and beyond. Almost all graduates secure their first teaching post by the time they finish the PGCE programme. Graduates of the programme also have great career prospects, with many becoming Head of Department or a Head of Year within 2-5 years, often acting, in their schools, as mentors to new PGCE student teachers. Many of our graduates become senior teachers (such as Assistant Headteachers or Head of a Faculty) in 5-8 years of graduating, and some are now Headteachers. Others have developed their careers as subject specialist teachers and educators, both becoming lead teachers in the classroom and researching, writing and advising other teachers themselves. The Secondary PGCE Programme is a springboard into a rewarding career, not just as a skilled teacher, but as an educational leader.
This programme prepares students to teach across the 14-19 age range, helping them to develop the professional skills and attitudes to teach business in schools and colleges, as part of academic (A level and GCSE) and BTEC courses.
Tutors on the Business Education PGCE are skilled classroom practitioners with extensive experience in secondary schools and colleges. We aim to give students insight into the continuously evolving subject of business and its application to classroom teaching. Our collaborative approach ensures that students developed into thoughtful and highly-skilled teachers who can work confidently and flexibly within the broad framework of the 14 to 19 curriculum.
The dynamic nature of business means that students benefit greatly from practical experiences and learning outside of the classroom. The IOE offers students the unique ability to visit places such as the London Stock Exchange and the Bank of England; we also have strong links with the Economics and Business Education Association (EBEA) and provide access to national and regional Business Education conferences.
This route leads to the award of QTS (Qualified Teacher Status).
This programme provides advanced training in research methods across the full range of the social sciences and meets the training requirements for ESRC PhD funding.
Our MSc in Social Science Research Methods aims to provide advanced training in research methods across the full range of the social sciences.
You will be provided with a thorough theoretical and practical knowledge of how to construct effective research studies, of the variety of data collection methods available to the social scientist and of the principal methods of analysing social scientific data. You will also be introduced to the political and ethical frameworks within which social science research is conducted, and to some of the ways in which the results of social science research are disseminated.
The course pathways have ESRC recognition and they each provide the appropriate training basis for proceeding to a PhD. These programmes provide extensive opportunities for interdisciplinary study, the application of social research expertise for occupational career development, and the pursuit of substantive areas of interest at postgraduate level.
The Management and Business Studies pathway
This pathway is suitable for two groups of people:
Research training in Management and Business Studies builds on the internationally recognised research carried out by academic staff within Cardiff Business School. You will benefit from specialist expertise in management research as well as from the broad research profile of the School and links with wider Cardiff University research.

You will be supervised by academic staff with considerable expertise in their chosen fields. These staff members are actively involved in disseminating research via publications in academic and practitioner journals, books and presentations to conferences.
Many staff members are involved in editing or reviewing for scholarly management journals.
How will I be taught?
Your programme will be made up of scheduled learning activities (including lectures, seminars, tutorials and practical sessions) and guided independent study.
You will be expected to actively engage in all the educational activities on your programme of study, to prepare for and attend all scheduled teaching activities, and continue your development as an independent and self-directed learner.
How will I be supported?
All modules within the programme make use of our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) Learning Central, on which you will find course materials, links to related materials and information on assessment. You will be allocated a personal tutor.
This programme provides knowledge and expertise suitable for careers in research and development, business, market studies, public agencies at international, national and local levels, education, teaching and other public services work, and voluntary organisations.
It also provides appropriate training for proceeding to a PhD.
The School Direct Programme (Salaried) is a new route into teaching at both primary and secondary levels. Participating schools, or clusters of schools that join together, are allocated a set number of student-teacher places which can be applied for. Students will earn a salary while they train.
Students will be part of a school team from the start and will receive intensive support from experienced teachers in the classroom. Opportunities will exist to build networks with fellow trainees. This route leads to the award of QTS (Qualified Teacher Status).
There are two compulsory school placements. Students are expected to complete the associated tasks, and to build a portfolio of evidence during the academic year to demonstrate they have met national teaching standards.
Students do not undertake academic credits on this programme. However, all components will need to be assessed to gain QTS.
As part of the programme students will spend time in placement at a school or college, during which time their teaching practice will be supported by a school subject tutor and mentor. For this programme students will spend the majority of the programme in school, employed as an unqualified teacher.
Teaching and learning
The programme is delivered via a series of lectures and workshop at the UCL Institute of Education for 15 days (10 days' Professional Studies and five days subject-specific training) spread over the autumn and spring terms. The placement schools are responsible for providing an additional 45 days of training activities, alongside the practical teaching experience. Students are assessed on their practical teaching of Business Studies and their progress in achieving the standards for Qualified Teacher Status by gathering evidence in the form of a portfolio.

Graduates in this area can also be found working as education officers, initial teacher educators, teachers in international schools and as entrepreneurs running businesses offering consultancy in schools.
Most of the student teachers trained through this route are employed by the training school or within the cluster after completing programme. The nature of this route to Qualified Teacher Status is for schools to train student teachers who are committed to the values and ethos of the school or academy and wish to develop their teaching career within the school or cluster which invested in their training.
The UCL Institute of Education (IOE) has been providing first-class teaching training, in partnership with schools and colleges for over 100 years and all of their initial teacher training programmes have been rated as outstanding. Founded in 1902, as a teacher training college in London, the IOE is a world-class research and teaching institute. IOE graduates are highly sought after in schools and colleges throughout London and the UK. The central location in historic Bloomsbury means that you are in the heart of London.
There are over 40 schools and colleges in the Greater London area and beyond participating in the School Direct (Salaried) programme.
Each of these offer student-teacher places in at least one subject area and many of them have places across a broad range of subjects.
This route leads to the award of QTS (Qualified Teacher Status).
The aim of this course is to develop thoughtful, innovative teachers who can deliver high quality lessons for pupils in school, by providing a balanced Economics and Business Education programme. The PGCE Economics with Business route is taught full-time and commences in September. It focuses on the 14-19 age group, notably “A” level and GCSE with primary and post-16 enhancement, trainees will teach Economics and Business Studies whilst training in school.
Successful completion of the course will lead to the award Qualified Teacher Status along with 60 credits towards a Masters.
PGCE: programme structure
The intercultural programme Chinese-European Economics and Business Studies provides students with key insights into major aspects of economic development in China and Europe. The skills taught include analyses of specific aspects of trade relations and financial flows, and an understanding of the social and economic interrelations between these two geo-political regions.
This full-time Master programme comprises three parts:
The Master programme takes two years in total. It begins in mid of September and ends two years later when students present their Master’s Thesis. The programme is divided into four semesters. The first two semesters are spent at Berlin School of Economics and Law. The third semester takes place at the Southwestern University of Finance and Economics in Chengdu, China. The fourth semester includes the writing of the Master’s Thesis. It can be studied in either location.
The master programme is taught entirely in English.
All core courses are given in a seminar style, using a wide range of case studies, presentations and discussions to provide an in-depth review of the material under consideration.
