The education and training of Business Studies teachers is a long-established feature of UWTSD. The course is the main provider of Business Studies teachers in Wales and enjoys an enviable reputation in the sector. The course incorporates the most recent innovations and thinking in Business Studies teaching.

Course Overview

The aims of the course are to provide an engaging and relevant professional training that enables Business graduates to (i) transform their Business Studies expertise into competent and effective classroom teaching, (ii) develop an understanding of how pupils learn Business subjects, (iii) critically evaluate and enhance their teaching to improve quality and effectiveness in the classroom.

The Business Studies course has strong links with the professional Business Studies teaching networks. There is regular use of visiting expert teachers and professionals from partner schools/colleges, Awarding Bodies, and industry and commerce.

The PGCE Business Studies course has links with the University of Wales Trinity Saint David's Swansea Business School. The 'Big Business Bonanza' is an event that is held every year and local pupils are invited to attend, with the PGCE Business students helping to organise and run the event.

The PGCE Business Studies course uses partner schools and colleges across South Wales. Placements are decided after consultations between mentors, subject tutors and the Programme Director.

Trainees are given the opportunity to express preferences as to the areas in which they wish to practise; however, many other factors need to be considered in placing trainees and there can be no guarantees that trainees' wishes will be met. All placements will be found within realistic commuting distances, although trainees are expected to be prepared to travel to placements.

Modules

-Principles of Teaching, Learning and Pedagogy in Secondary Education
-Skills and Learning across the Curriculum (Welsh or English)
-Investigating Issues in Secondary Education (Welsh or English)
-Curriculum Development and Enhancement
-Professional Teaching Experience (Level 6 – English or Welsh/bilingual)

Key Features

The Business Studies PGCE at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David makes rigorous demands on participants, but trainees are also given a high level of constructive support and counselling in developing their teaching and personal skills.

The University offers excellent support to trainees in seeking their first posts. There are dedicated jobs bulletins and notice boards. Participants are trained in interview techniques. There is also a large and popular annual Teaching Employment Fair in January.

The employment rate for the course is the best in Wales and many graduates of the course are now Heads of Department or Senior Teachers and act as Mentors for the programme.

Assessment

As a postgraduate academic course, the PGCE is assessed through two main components: there are four written assignments and Professional Teaching Experience includes thorough assessment of practical teaching skills.

The written assignments are based around realistic professional teaching tasks which seek to integrate preparation, research and inquiry.

Career Opportunities

The South West Wales Centre of Teacher Education has excellent graduate employment rates with 99% of graduates going into employment or further study (DLHE 14/15).

Many school and college departments, both locally and nationally, are staffed with several of our teachers and many of our trainees have gone on to forge successful teaching careers at strategic, professional and management levels at home and abroad.

Our PGCE graduates usually remain in close touch with us as they make their careers in the teaching profession and they often become Subject Mentors on the programme. This creates a very strong, sustainable professional network of teachers which is a rich source of continuing professional development.

Recently our PGCE Business Studies graduates have gone on to work as Secondary teachers in many independent and state schools in Wales, England and abroad including (but not limited) to: John Kyrle High School (Ross-on-wye), Wembley High Technology College (Wembley), Wheatley Park School (Oxford), Ysgol Gyfun y Strade (Llanelli), Maesteg Comprehensive School (Maesteg), Ysgol Bro Dineswr (Carmarthenshire), Arden Academy (Solihull).

Study a Master of Science in Business Studies in the Netherlands

Are you a future Interdisciplinary Business Professional?

  • Do you wish to work in interdisciplinary teams with people from different backgrounds and contribute your expertise and creativity to achieve a common goal?
  • Are you able to think out of the box, accept new, exciting challenges and study problems from all possible angles?
  • Are you prepared to study hard and work even harder, by putting your practical, hands-on daring attitude to good use?

Then the English-taught Master MSc in Business Studies from Hanze University of Applied Sciences, Groningen, is the right programme for you!

The Master MSc in Business Studies is an intensive, ground-breaking one-year international Master programme in the domain of business studies, designed for ambitious students who are eager to make a difference. You will contribute to solutions and innovations for wicked problems that organisations are facing. Wicked problems are complex interdisciplinary issues that require innovative and diverse answers for organisations that add value to both people and our planet.

The Master MSc in Business Studies (Interdisciplinary Business Professional)

The Master MSc in Business Studies aims to educate ambitious, agile and innovative Business Professionals who are shaping their own entrepreneurship as so-called intrapreneurs. These Business Professionals accept challenges and are able to effect innovations in interdisciplinary forms of cooperation that will contribute to society in a meaningful way.

Dealing with wicked problems

Companies and organisations are facing a world in transition. They must cope with the effects of economic developments and societal changes such as globalisation,

digitalisation, internationalisation and sustainability. They must deal with complex issues, that are hard to define, difficult to predict and have several causes. For instance:

  • How can they guarantee that their colourful t-shirts and dresses are not sown by six-year olds?
  • What can organisations do to prevent cyberattacks on their computer systems without compromising the privacy of their clients and workforce?
  • How can they counter claims that they are responsible for the “plastic soup” in our oceans, killing off precious coral banks and sea life alike?

Survive, thrive and innovate

To survive and thrive, companies and organisations must innovate. They must look to the future. To remain relevant, they need to adapt and change. They must grab wicked problems by the tail and transform threats into opportunities and find the right answers to dilemmas. They need professionals with an open mind, who are equipped and prepared to team up with co-workers of other disciplines within and outside the organisation. To become Interdisciplinary Business Professionals who have what it takes to do what needs to be done. This is the first Master programme offered by a university of applied sciences in the Netherlands to meet this need.

Becoming leaders as well team players

As a future Interdisciplinary Business Professional, you will be a leader as well as a team player. You will be expected to take the lead in innovations and groundbreaking projects, while cooperating with team members with an entirely different background and point of view. During this Master programme, you will carry out individual and collective assignments, working independently and with a team of fellow-students, lecturer-researchers, professors and the professional field. This is how you will develop your personal and professional skills to become the creative intrapreneur organisations and companies need and demand.

Community of Learners

From day one you will work in an interdisciplinary, international setting. We offer you an ambitious and safe environment to cultivate your individual talents as well as your ability to work with others in co-creation. You will be part of an active and stimulating Community of Learners, consisting of your fellow-students as well as committed professors, lecturer-researchers and the professional practice. Within the Community you cooperate and learn from each other with the aim to create new knowledge for complex issues leading to sustainable solutions and innovations. You will learn to master the knowledge, skills, and, most importantly, the new roles you will need in your future job and you will be coached in your leadership skills.

Applied Research, Interdisciplinary Assignments, Professional Skills Development & Ethics

The Master programme consists of three pillars: Applied research, Interdisciplinary Assignments and Professional Skills Development & Ethics. These three pillars are based on the view that the future Business Professional needs to be equipped with critical thinking skills along with analytical skills to be able to handle complex issues. The interdisciplinary assignments enhance cooperation and communication skills with professionals from various disciplines and backgrounds. The Professional Skills Development & Ethics focuses on the ability to reflect on one’s own behaviour and development and to adapt accordingly. The Master programme kicks off with an intensive week where you will meet fellow students and experience the four core disciplines of the programme, while acquiring intensive training on your research skills. During the following weeks you will work in interdisciplinary teams on an assignment centered around the theme Sustainability.

Within the Interdisciplinary Innovation Assignments you will work on real-life complex issues from the professional field. It includes a dynamic combination of co-creation with fellow-students and the professional field, academic depth provided by (guest) lectures and professorships, and an evidence-based approach with insights from different disciplinary perspectives. Both (guest) lectures from experts in the field and the Community of Learners will support you throughout the Master programme. Your knowledge development is enhanced by the six ample themes and accompanying topics, that encompass the core disciplines of the Master programme: Marketing, Finance, Human Resource Management and Business & IT:

  • Sustainability: e.g. Corporate Social Responsibility, Cooperatives & Democracy
  • Technology Driven Society: e.g. Dynamic Capability, Compliance Management
  • Liquid Society: e.g. Behavioural Economics, Complexity and Transition Management
  • Innovation & Entrepreneurship: e.g. Circular Economy, Effectuation Theory
  • Professional Skills Development & Ethics: e.g. Systems Thinking, In the Board Room

Course detail

On your PGCE 14-19 course here at Canterbury Christ Church University you will study three University-based modules Curriculum Studies, Professional Studies and Enhanced Studies and one placement-based module Professional Practice.

The course provides you with an engaging and relevant professional training that enables you to transform your business studies expertise into competent and effective classroom teaching and develops your understanding of how young people engage and learn in business subjects. You will also learn how to critically evaluate and enhance your teaching to improve quality and effectiveness in the classroom.

The key feature of your PGCE is that all learning experiences and opportunities you will have on the course are designed to inform and complement each other culminating in the development of your academic and professional practice as a teacher/lecturer. So you will be prepared initially, and then have the opportunity to reflect on your teaching placement experiences and will have a focus on planning and preparing to teach, assessment for learning, managing behaviour and team working skills.

You will also be supported in developing your own teaching in an independent environment with a constant focus on guided self-improvement. You will gain confidence in your ability to reflect on your own practical teaching experience and develop important skills such as critical self-reflection while improving your subject and curriculum knowledge in business studies.

Suitability

The PGCE Business Studies (14-19) is aimed at postgraduates who wish to inspire and motivate teenagers to understand the business world in which they live and to help them make informed decisions about their choices as citizens, employees and consumers.

We recruit graduates who have a degree in a business or business-related subject or in some exceptional cases an unrelated degree if they have a significant employment background in business and/or industry.

We welcome candidates with experience in the commercial and business world, particularly where this work has enhanced their knowledge, skills and understanding in business.

The course is uniquely set up for postgraduates to gain experience teaching, learning and assessment both in a school setting and in college or sixth form environments.

Assessment

Your three University-based modules assessed through small-scale research assignments of 4,000 words each and offer you the opportunity to gain 20 Masters level credits in each of these modules. You are supported through each of these by means of tutorials with your University tutors.

Both your two Professional Practice placements are formatively and then summatively assessed through the teaching files you have created, your reflective Learning Journal, regular lesson observations by the teachers/lecturers you work with on a day-to-day basis, your Curriculum Mentors in your teaching placements and your University tutor. There is also an Interim and Final report from both your teaching placements.

What can I do next?

As your PGCE allows you to engage with the secondary and lifelong learning sectors the opportunities to work in a wide range of contexts where learning and teaching is at the heart of a particular organisation.

The majority of our graduates are now working in various establishments in the secondary or further education sectors and in a variety of capacities including subject tutors and mentors. Some graduates choose to teach in the private sector and others choose to follow the special educational needs route and occasionally young offenders’ institutions. Furthermore, for those of you who are adventurous there are many opportunities for teaching the subject overseas.

In addition to being employed in an organisation and capacity which you find exciting there is also the opportunity for you to continue your studies in education through participating in Masters level programmes. A Master of Business Studies will give you the skills you need to progress your career, or continue to further study.

What will you learn?

A master’s is a rigorous, challenging, rewarding and exciting programme of study. Your study will focus on your chosen major, but help you put this speciality into the context of other business disciplines - reflecting the reality of today’s business environment.

Why postgraduate study?

Postgraduate study is hard work but hugely rewarding and empowering. The workload of the Master of Business Studies replicates the high-pressure environment of senior workplace roles and high-level research. Our experts are there to guide but if you have come from undergraduate study, you will find that postgraduate study demands more in-depth and independent study.

Not just more of the same

Postgraduate study is not just ‘more of the same’ undergraduate study. It takes you to a new level in knowledge and expertise especially in planning and undertaking research.

About this programme

Students will understand how business is taught in schools, how pupils learn and make sense of the evolving nature of business. This is reflected in the range of business related courses that are now offered by schools, sixth forms and colleges, with the focus in some instances on entrepreneurship, work skills and new business technologies.

Students will be joining the largest Business PGCE programme in the country, allowing them to benefit from a team of tutors with a wide range of expertise of business, both inside and outside of the classroom. Students will also be able to develop strong peer networks, share ideas, resources and advice amongst your cohort of fellow PGCE Business students.

Students undertake two Master’s-level (level 7) modules of 30 credits each, totaling 60 credits. These can be carried forward onto full Master’s programmes at the IOE.

The Secondary PGCE consists of three core modules: two Master’s-level modules, which are assessed through written assignments, and the Professional Practice module, which is assessed by the observation of practical teaching in placement schools.

Completion of the Professional Practice module and the two level 7 (Master’s level) modules (60 credits) will result in the award of a Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE). Completion of the Professional Practice module and one or two level 6 (undergraduate/Bachelor’s level) modules, will lead to the Professional Graduate Certificate of Education (PgCE).

Core modules

  • Learning and Teaching in Business Education (30 Master's-level credits)
  • Teaching Business Education in a Wider Educational Context (30 Master's-level credits)
  • Professional Practice

Optional modules

  • There are no optional modules for this programme

Placement

You will spend most of your time (120 days) in schools, working with business studies mentors who support you through your school placements. The Professional Practice module is assessed through these placements, associated tasks and a portfolio.

Teaching and learning

The programme is delivered via keynote lectures, subject lectures, seminars, workshops, tutorials and directed study days at the IOE, as well as time spent in placement at the host school or alliance. Assessment is by the observation of practical teaching, assignments and a portfolio (which links into continuing professional development in the induction year).

Careers

Graduates of this programme are currently working across a broad range of areas. Some are working as teachers of business and economics education, while others have jobs as middle and senior managers in schools. Graduates in this area can also be found working as education officers, initial teacher educators, teachers in international schools and as entrepreneurs running businesses offering consultancy in schools. The majority of graduates find employment in London schools, with many gaining promotions and responsibilities early in their teaching careers.

Employability

Graduates of the Secondary PGCE programme are highly employable and sought after by schools and colleges in London and beyond. Almost all graduates secure their first teaching post by the time they finish the PGCE programme. Graduates of the programme also have great career prospects, with many becoming Head of Department or a Head of Year within 2-5 years, often acting, in their schools, as mentors to new PGCE student teachers. Many of our graduates become senior teachers (such as Assistant Headteachers or Head of a Faculty) in 5-8 years of graduating, and some are now Headteachers. Others have developed their careers as subject specialist teachers and educators, both becoming lead teachers in the classroom and researching, writing and advising other teachers themselves. The Secondary PGCE Programme is a springboard into a rewarding career, not just as a skilled teacher, but as an educational leader.

Why study this programme at UCL?

This programme prepares students to teach across the 14-19 age range, helping them to develop the professional skills and attitudes to teach business in schools and colleges, as part of academic (A level and GCSE) and BTEC courses.

Tutors on the Business Education PGCE are skilled classroom practitioners with extensive experience in secondary schools and colleges. We aim to give students insight into the continuously evolving subject of business and its application to classroom teaching. Our collaborative approach ensures that students developed into thoughtful and highly-skilled teachers who can work confidently and flexibly within the broad framework of the 14 to 19 curriculum.

The dynamic nature of business means that students benefit greatly from practical experiences and learning outside of the classroom. The IOE offers students the unique ability to visit places such as the London Stock Exchange and the Bank of England; we also have strong links with the Economics and Business Education Association (EBEA) and provide access to national and regional Business Education conferences.

Accreditation:

This route leads to the award of QTS (Qualified Teacher Status).

Students will be part of a school team from the start and will receive intensive support from experienced teachers in the classroom. Opportunities will exist to build networks with fellow trainees. This route leads to the award of QTS (Qualified Teacher Status).

There are two compulsory school placements. Students are expected to complete the associated tasks, and to build a portfolio of evidence during the academic year to demonstrate they have met national teaching standards.

Students do not undertake academic credits on this programme. However, all components will need to be assessed to gain QTS.

Core modules

  • Professional Practice

Optional modules

  • There are no optional modules for this programme

Placement

As part of the programme students will spend time in placement at a school or college, during which time their teaching practice will be supported by a school subject tutor and mentor. For this programme students will spend the majority of the programme in school, employed as an unqualified teacher.

Teaching and learning

The programme is delivered via a series of lectures and workshop at the UCL Institute of Education for 15 days (10 days' Professional Studies and five days subject-specific training) spread over the autumn and spring terms. The placement schools are responsible for providing an additional 45 days of training activities, alongside the practical teaching experience. Students are assessed on their practical teaching of Business Studies and their progress in achieving the standards for Qualified Teacher Status by gathering evidence in the form of a portfolio.

Further information on modules and programme structure is available on the department website: School Direct (Salaried): Business Studies QTS/Teacher Training

Careers

Graduates of UCL Institute of Education's Business teacher training programmes are currently working across a broad range of areas. Some are working as teachers of business and economics education, while others have jobs as middle and senior managers in schools. Graduates in this area can also be found working as education officers, initial teacher educators, teachers in international schools and as entrepreneurs running businesses offering consultancy in schools.

Employability

Most of the student teachers trained through this route are employed by the training school or within the cluster after completing programme. The nature of this route to Qualified Teacher Status is for schools to train student teachers who are committed to the values and ethos of the school or academy and wish to develop their teaching career within the school or cluster which invested in their training.

Why study this programme at UCL?

The UCL Institute of Education (IOE) has been providing first-class teaching training, in partnership with schools and colleges for over 100 years and all of their initial teacher training programmes have been rated as outstanding. Founded in 1902, as a teacher training college in London, the IOE is a world-class research and teaching institute. IOE graduates are highly sought after in schools and colleges throughout London and the UK. The central location in historic Bloomsbury means that you are in the heart of London.

There are over 40 schools and colleges in the Greater London area and beyond participating in the School Direct (Salaried) programme.

Each of these offer student-teacher places in at least one subject area and many of them have places across a broad range of subjects.

The aim of this course is to develop thoughtful, innovative teachers who can deliver high quality lessons for pupils in school, by providing a balanced Economics and Business Education programme. The PGCE Economics with Business route is taught full-time and commences in September. It focuses on the 14-19 age group, notably “A” level and GCSE with primary and post-16 enhancement, trainees will teach Economics and Business Studies whilst training in school.

Successful completion of the course will lead to the award Qualified Teacher Status along with 60 credits towards a Masters.

What happens on the course?

  • Over the one year course, you undertake two periods of University-based learning at Walsall Campus, and you spend at least 120 days divided between two different school placements across the 11-16 age range within the secondary age phase.
  • Your University tutor is available to assist you throughout your training, and every effort is made to ensure you have a high-quality school placement, where you can learn from experienced teachers.
  • All course modules provide examples of good practice in teaching which you will reflect upon as you develop your own teaching style - You will be expected to participate actively in your own learning and development.
  • Teaching on the course reflects a variety of methods that will prepare you for life in the classroom including teacher-led debates, pupil-led exploration, peer-group discovery and the provision of individual targets. You will be assessed in a variety of ways including written assignments, school-based project and other school-based activities and appraisal of practical teaching skills. The majority teaching sessions will be alongside trainees from the other science routes, with a small number dedicated specifically to physics.
  • All University-based elements of the course take place at the Walsall Campus.
  • Typical modules may include:
  • Observation of teaching, before undertaking ‘sheltered’ teaching activities, for example teaching parts of lessons or groups of pupils within a class
  • Progression to teaching single or short sequences of lessons
  • Further development through planned classroom activities
  • Development of teaching skills as you move to sustained sequences of lessons
  • Research in the University and school on the use of ICT in the teaching of your subject

PGCE: programme structure

  • Starting in September and ending in June the full-time PGCE is the fastest and most condensed way for non-experienced trainees to qualify.
  • The course comprises of two school placements and two periods of University-based teaching September to October; January to February.
  • 24 weeks of the 36 week PGCE course will be spent in schools. You will have one school attachment during the autumn term and another (in a different school) in the spring/summer terms. During the second attachment a proportion of your teaching at key stage 4 will be focussed on your chosen specialist area.
  • We try to take your geographical location into account when placing you in schools but our first concern is to ensure that you have a high quality school placement that can provide a range of experiences. Additional training will therefore take place in partner schools other than your 'attachment' schools. Support is available from your University Tutor throughout your training, plus from experienced teachers accredited by the University as school based tutors.

Why Wolverhampton?

  • We are one of Britain's largest and most established providers of teacher education. A national survey conducted by the Centre for Education and Employment Research has ranked Wolverhampton as the second most successful UK Higher Education Institute for graduate teacher training employment.
  • We have a state of the art Education and Teaching Building with teaching rooms fitted with interactive whiteboards, two lecture theatres as well as social learning areas and a coffee shop.
  • Access to regular Professional Skills Test Support.

Career path

  • The PGCE Secondary School Teaching leads to qualified teacher status, and allows you to take up a teaching post within a secondary school
  • In secondary schools you could move up and across the management structure to gain responsibility for:
  • a particular subject as head of department, faculty or curriculum
  • a particular age group as head of year or key stage coordinator
  • a particular area such as special education needs or pastoral care (i.e. personal guidance)
  • Ultimately, you could progress to a senior management position such as a deputy or assistant head and, of course, headteacher - at which point you will have overall responsibility for the management of a school and the education its pupils receive
  • Following successful completion of this award, you could also use your 60 Masters-level credits towards any of our Masters degrees in the field of education which can be continued within your NQT year.

What skills will you gain?

  • If you are successful you will be awarded Qualified Teacher Status and you will be prepared to teach pupils in the 14-19 age range within the secondary age phase with primary and post-16 enhancement.
  • The course will provide you with an excellent start to your teaching career as you experience teaching science in two separate secondary schools, working with trained school-based tutors to aid your development. Successful completion of the course will award Qualified Teacher Status along with 60 Masters-level credits.
  • Become a critical reflective teacher with high levels of subject knowledge and a wide understanding of educational theory and practice.
  • Professional skills required to achieve Outstanding results in relation to student progress including data analysis, communication, lesson planning and assessment methods.

Who accredits this course?

  • This course leads to the professional qualification of QTS – Qualified Teacher Status. The University will recommend students who have demonstrated competence in the Professional Standards to the Teaching Agency – who will award QTS.
  • The award of QTS is essential to teach in a school in the United Kingdom and on gaining this award the student becomes a qualified teacher.

It is nowadays a truism that accelerating globalisation makes the world of international business a demanding and challenging place. Yet it is important to remember that change has always been part of the way we live our lives. Historically, people who have been the most successful at handling change have been those who have engaged in higher education at some point in their lives.

Successful people are generally those who have an attitude of not just adapting to changing circumstances, but who anticipate the direction of change and who can thrive in dynamic environments.

By studying international business at FH Kufstein you can be assured that you will receive a truly modern higher education in business that will help you succeed.

This comprehensive new master's degree, with its international orientation, allows students to choose from one of two specialisations, whilst simultaneously offering a wide range of electives.

Two Specialisations

The specialisations are in marketing/management and finance. The marketing/management option is designed to provide a sound management education in the broad area of marketing. A thorough understanding of services marketing, consumer marketing, consumer behaviour, social marketing and social psychology is integral to the marketing management specialisation.

The finance option, which is built upon a comprehensive economics base, includes study in the areas of corporate finance, multinational business finance, behavioural finance as well as the economics of uncertainty.

Lectures in English

Given that English is the language of international commerce, all lectures are conducted in English. Moreover, social skills are fundamental to successful business operations in an international environment. Students are given the opportunity to deepen their communication and negotiation abilities, whilst simultaneously gaining important insights into team development and conflict management. Graduates have the ability to think systematically.
