The education and training of Business Studies teachers is a long-established feature of UWTSD. Course Overview

The aims of the course are to provide an engaging and relevant professional training that enables Business graduates to (i) transform their Business Studies expertise into competent and effective classroom teaching, (ii) develop an understanding of how pupils learn Business subjects, (iii) critically evaluate and enhance their teaching to improve quality and effectiveness in the classroom.

The Business Studies course has strong links with the professional Business Studies teaching networks. There is regular use of visiting expert teachers and professionals from partner schools/colleges, Awarding Bodies, and industry and commerce.

The PGCE Business Studies course has links with the University of Wales Trinity Saint David's Swansea Business School. The 'Big Business Bonanza' is an event that is held every year and local pupils are invited to attend, with the PGCE Business students helping to organise and run the event.

The PGCE Business Studies course uses partner schools and colleges across South Wales. Placements are decided after consultations between mentors, subject tutors and the Programme Director.

Trainees are given the opportunity to express preferences as to the areas in which they wish to practise; however, many other factors need to be considered in placing trainees and there can be no guarantees that trainees' wishes will be met. All placements will be found within realistic commuting distances, although trainees are expected to be prepared to travel to placements.

Key Features

The Business Studies PGCE at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David makes rigorous demands on participants, but trainees are also given a high level of constructive support and counselling in developing their teaching and personal skills.

The University offers excellent support to trainees in seeking their first posts. There are dedicated jobs bulletins and notice boards. Participants are trained in interview techniques. There is also a large and popular annual Teaching Employment Fair in January.

The employment rate for the course is the best in Wales and many graduates of the course are now Heads of Department or Senior Teachers and act as Mentors for the programme.

Assessment

As a postgraduate academic course, the PGCE is assessed through two main components: there are four written assignments and Professional Teaching Experience includes thorough assessment of practical teaching skills.

The written assignments are based around realistic professional teaching tasks which seek to integrate preparation, research and inquiry.

The South West Wales Centre of Teacher Education has excellent graduate employment rates with 99% of graduates going into employment or further study (DLHE 14/15).

The PGCE in business studies aims to you to make the transition from subject expert to teacher/lecturer. The course will develop your practical skills and knowledge to be able to relate this to the wider educational responsibilities of being a teacher/lecturer.

On your PGCE 14-19 course here at Canterbury Christ Church University you will study three University-based modules Curriculum Studies, Professional Studies and Enhanced Studies and one placement-based module Professional Practice.

The course provides you with an engaging and relevant professional training that enables you to transform your business studies expertise into competent and effective classroom teaching and develops your understanding of how young people engage and learn in business subjects. You will also learn how to critically evaluate and enhance your teaching to improve quality and effectiveness in the classroom.

The key feature of your PGCE is that all learning experiences and opportunities you will have on the course are designed to inform and complement each other culminating in the development of your academic and professional practice as a teacher/lecturer. So you will be prepared initially, and then have the opportunity to reflect on your teaching placement experiences and will have a focus on planning and preparing to teach, assessment for learning, managing behaviour and team working skills.

You will also be supported in developing your own teaching in an independent environment with a constant focus on guided self-improvement. The course is uniquely set up for postgraduates to gain experience teaching, learning and assessment both in a school setting and in college or sixth form environments.

Assessment

Your three University-based modules assessed through small-scale research assignments of 4,000 words each and offer you the opportunity to gain 20 Masters level credits in each of these modules. You are supported through each of these by means of tutorials with your University tutors.

Both your two Professional Practice placements are formatively and then summatively assessed through the teaching files you have created, your reflective Learning Journal, regular lesson observations by the teachers/lecturers you work with on a day-to-day basis, your Curriculum Mentors in your teaching placements and your University tutor. There is also an Interim and Final report from both your teaching placements.

As your PGCE allows you to engage with the secondary and lifelong learning sectors the opportunities to work in a wide range of contexts where learning and teaching is at the heart of a particular organisation.

The majority of our graduates are now working in various establishments in the secondary or further education sectors and in a variety of capacities including subject tutors and mentors. Some graduates choose to teach in the private sector and others choose to follow the special educational needs route and occasionally young offenders’ institutions. Furthermore, for those of you who are adventurous there are many opportunities for teaching the subject overseas.

In addition to being employed in an organisation and capacity which you find exciting there is also the opportunity for you to continue your studies in education through participating in Masters level programmes. Degree information

Students will understand how business is taught in schools, how pupils learn and make sense of the evolving nature of business. This is reflected in the range of business related courses that are now offered by schools, sixth forms and colleges, with the focus in some instances on entrepreneurship, work skills and new business technologies.

Students will be joining the largest Business PGCE programme in the country, allowing them to benefit from a team of tutors with a wide range of expertise of business, both inside and outside of the classroom. Students will also be able to develop strong peer networks, share ideas, resources and advice amongst your cohort of fellow PGCE Business students.

Students undertake two Master’s-level (level 7) modules of 30 credits each, totaling 60 credits. These can be carried forward onto full Master’s programmes at the IOE.

The Secondary PGCE consists of three core modules: two Master’s-level modules, which are assessed through written assignments, and the Professional Practice module, which is assessed by the observation of practical teaching in placement schools.

Completion of the Professional Practice module and the two level 7 (Master’s level) modules (60 credits) will result in the award of a Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE). Completion of the Professional Practice module and one or two level 6 (undergraduate/Bachelor’s level) modules, will lead to the Professional Graduate Certificate of Education (PgCE). There are no optional modules for this programme.

Graduates of this programme are currently working across a broad range of areas. Some are working as teachers of business and economics education, while others have jobs as middle and senior managers in schools. The intercultural programme Chinese-European Economics and Business Studies provides students with key insights into major aspects of economic development in China and Europe. The skills taught include analyses of specific aspects of trade relations and financial flows, and an understanding of the social and economic interrelations between these two geo-political regions.

Profile

China’s rapid economic development, it’s integration into the world market, as well as its significance for the global economy are changing the development of companies and institutions at a national and international level. Europe is still an important player in the world market. Its integration process is difficult but unique. In an intercultural setting, students will learn to describe major aspects of the economic development in China and Europe and learn to analyse trade relations and financial flows as well as social and economic interrelations between the two regions.

The cross-cultural learning and teaching environment is further supported by a mandatory semester in China. The staff involved in the Master´s programme are internationally-renowned academics and senior researchers. An international academic staff exchange is an essential element in the programme included in team-teaching.

The programme takes a comparative Chinese-European perspective in the majority of the modules. The programme offers an international and application-oriented approach towards a multidisciplinary and academic education in Economics and Business Studies.

Our Management and Business Studies (Research) MA is designed to provide you with the essential skills as well as the advanced knowledge and understanding of business and management to proceed to doctoral research. It forms part of the 1+3 (Master's plus PhD) scheme under the Doctoral Training Centre.

Through the course you will develop: a thorough grounding in theory, approaches, research methods and associated ethics in the social sciences generally and in management and business studies in particular, skills in the analysis of both quantitative and qualitative research data as well as an understanding of cutting edge research across the social sciences, the ability to reconcile different research approaches and analyse data in a wide variety of formats, both qualitative and quantitative.

Programme syllabus

The programme comprises four module groups:

A) Core modules
B) Regional area studies
C) Business administration and economics
D) Foreign languages

A) The core modules are further subdivided into two areas: theory and methods as one area and applied skills as the other. You will gain well-founded knowledge of intercultural communication and comparative cultural studies, intercultural management and academic research. Moreover, you will work on a cultural project outside the University and hone transferable skills by choosing your own Key Competencies courses taught by professional instructors.

B) In this module group you will consolidate your knowledge related to your chosen cultural region in up to three of the following subjects: cultural studies, literary studies, linguistics, history, geography, political science, sociology, history of art/visual culture, intercultural communication, communication studies, media studies, philosophy or digital humanities.

C) You will choose business studies or economics modules in this module group: The business modules are concerned with international market-oriented business management and organisation as well as marketing; the economics modules include international economics, development economics, economic policy and behavioural economics.

D) You will choose two of the following foreign languages: Chinese, Czech, English, French, German (for speakers of other languages), Indonesian, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Thai or Vietnamese. If you intend to choose the English language option you will need to have advanced English language skills. No existing language skills are presupposed for the other languages (i.e. they are also available ab initio). However, if you do have existing language skills, they will be taken into account by way of a placement test. The School Direct Programme (Salaried) is a new route into teaching at both primary and secondary levels. Participating schools, or clusters of schools that join together, are allocated a set number of student-teacher places which can be applied for. Students will earn a salary while they train.

Degree information

Students will be part of a school team from the start and will receive intensive support from experienced teachers in the classroom. Opportunities will exist to build networks with fellow trainees. This route leads to the award of QTS (Qualified Teacher Status).

There are two compulsory school placements. Students are expected to complete the associated tasks, and to build a portfolio of evidence during the academic year to demonstrate they have met national teaching standards.

Students do not undertake academic credits on this programme. However, all components will need to be assessed to gain QTS.

Where student teachers opt to gain the additional PGCE pathway, and less than 60 credits are achieved at level 7, but are successfully passed at level 6, a Professional Graduate Certificate of Education (PgCE) will be awarded.

Trainees may apply for an additional PGCE pathway during the programme (tuition fees apply). Students who gain 60 credits at level 7 (Master’s level) receive a PGCE; where 60 credits are passed at level 6 (undergraduate level) a Professional Graduate Certificate of Education (PgCE) is awarded.

Placement
As part of the programme students will spend time in placement at a school or college, during which time their teaching practice will be supported by a school subject tutor and mentor. For this programme students will spend the majority of the programme in school, employed as an unqualified teacher.

Teaching and learning
The programme is delivered via a series of lectures and workshop at the UCL Institute of Education for 15 days (10 days' Professional Studies and five days subject-specific training) spread over the autumn and spring terms. The placement schools are responsible for providing an additional 45 days of training activities, alongside the practical teaching experience. Students are assessed on their practical teaching and their progress in achieving the standards for Qualified Teacher Status by gathering evidence in the form of a portfolio.

Business, ethics and society investigates and activates the role of business as ethical and social leaders. The specialisation equips students with an understanding of the theoretical foundations and practical issues of internal and external ethical and societal forces that businesses face, respond to and activate. Business, ethics and society especially develops students' critical engagement and leadership capabilities to manage diversity, inclusiveness, and work and life. These capacities are developed within a strong context of ethics and corporate responsibility, and the domestic and international environments in that organisations operate. The specialisation prepares students for active managerial roles within organisations in the private, public and not-for-profit sectors.

Commercialisation

Commercialisation is the process or cycle of introducing a new product or production method into the market. The commercialisation process or cycle can be applied in many different contexts, including: art, design, and architecture; arts and humanities; business and economics; education; engineering; information technology; law; medicine, nursing and health sciences; pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences; and science and technology. The specialisation provides a comprehensive business-focused setting to help students develop the necessary business and entrepreneurial acumen and commercialisation knowledge to succeed. Commercialisation especially develops students' new venture finance, patenting, innovation, and wealth pathways skills and knowledge. The specialisation prepares students, particularly facilitated by the commercialisation project, for commercialisation and entrepreneurial roles within organisations in the private, public and not-for-profit sectors.

Information technology

The information technology discipline allows students to build upon the core program with six units dealing with current practices and emerging strategies for the application of information technology in business management. Students are introduced to management of the creation, storage, recall and dissemination of business records within organisation-wide frameworks and they will gain a high-level of understanding of the processes of project management. Units are taught by the Faculty of Information Technology.

Law and responsible business

The fortunes of a business can quickly turn around if it does not pay proper attention to the laws that regulate its organisation and activities. The law provides the framework for all aspects of business from the internal management of business organisations to their relationships with clients, consumers and the public. The units in this specialisation provide students with an understanding of the legal framework within which business operates and the fundamental laws that regulate business activities and transactions, with particular emphasis on how legal and social responsibility considerations should impact business decision-making.

Managing human capital

Managing human capital is the recognition of people as valuable contributors, and the systems and operations for investing in people to enhance their contributions. The specialisation equips students with an understanding of the theoretical foundations and practical issues of managing and developing people within an international context. Managing human capital develops students' strategic and operational people management knowledge and skills, particularly for diverse, inclusive, and productive workplaces. This specialisation prepares students for careers in human resource management, industrial relations, consulting, public sector management, and general people management roles.

Marketing

Marketing is a fun, dynamic, complex activity (and discipline) that focuses on providing value to both organisations and consumers. Project management

A project is a collection of activities and resources undertaken to achieve planned objectives, which could be defined in terms of time, quality and cost or economic outcomes. Quantitative business analysis

Risk management

Risk is defined by AS/NZS ISO 31000: 2009 as 'the effect of uncertainty on objectives'. The management of risk is an evolving discipline that builds on current knowledge in a diverse range of activities. The risk management specialisation focuses on operational and financial risk in today's commercial world. It provides extended skills in the strategic and process applications of risk management and prepares for the increasingly complex risk management issues faced in many areas of business and government. Much of the teaching on the course takes the form of interactive workshops, but there are also lectures from staff and visiting speakers. Approach to assessment

Each module is assessed individually, generally on the quality of written or visual presentation work, and to some extent on verbal presentations. Assessment methods may include reports, seminar papers, formal written examinations, in-class tests, project work, visual and verbal presentations, workshops, simulations, oral exams (viva) and practical exercises. The majority of assessments are based on individual assignments, but there is some assessed group work.

Field trips

By listening to our students and recognising the need for practice-oriented business and management education, we have introduced new ways to engage with companies from the public and the non-profit sector. We also offer the International Business in Practice - Study Trip. The purpose of this Study Trip Module is to give postgraduate students a hands-on, intensive experience with the ideas and practices of global business.
