ERIM Master of Philosophy in Business Research (ERIM Research Master) is an integral part of a 5-year Erasmus Doctoral Programme in Business and Management (2 years Master+ 3 years PhD) that is being offered by the Erasmus Research Institute of Management (ERIM).

Students participating in the ERIM Research Master choose one of the five domains of management:
- Business Processes, Logistics & Information Systems
- Organisation
- Marketing
- Finance and Accounting
- Strategy & Entrepreneurship.

ERIM Research Master was specifically designed for academically talented and motivated students who would like to combine education in a specialisation of their choice with the challenges of undertaking research in that field. With no more than 30 fellow students, this programme offers individual supervision, a highly personal approach and the opportunity to research your chosen subject in great depth. The amount and composition of the course work depends on the candidate’s specific educational background and individual profile. The entire programme is taught in English by some of the most distinguished management research academics in the world. It provides the perfect preparation for a PhD in either Management or Business, or for a research position in the wider world of business.

In the first year students follow courses on research methodology and methods, courses in management foundations, and courses in their chosen specialisation domain. In the second year students choose from a number of advanced courses on methodology and advanced (research) courses in the specialisation domain. Furthermore, ERIM research master students receive skills training (presentation skills, publishing skills, academic writing skills etc.) and actively participate in research seminars, together with ERIM faculty and visiting professors and fellows. The programme is concluded with a scientific thesis, combined with a research proposal.

Through its position within the research school, the ERIM Master of Philosophy in Business Research programme is embedded in an academic research environment of an excellent level and international standing. The programme contains many mechanisms whereby students can develop their knowledge through the interaction with ERIM members. Only ERIM members with an outstanding performance are allowed to teach on the ERIM Master of Philosophy in Business Research programme. Most of them are full professors. In addition, throughout the programme students are stimulated to engage in research activities and research interactions with ERIM members. This is facilitated not only by the formal curriculum. Students are also offered research assistantships that enable them to participate actively in research projects with ERIM members, not merely as typical student assistants but as true collaborators.

The Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) officially accredited ERIM on June 3, 1999. On July 1, 2011, the KNAW re-accredited ERIM for the next six years. The ERIM Master of Philosophy in Business Research has been accredited by the Dutch and Flemish Accreditation Organisation for higher education (NVAO) in 2004 and re-accredited in 2009 for another 6 years.

The internal quality assurance of the ERIM Master of Philosophy in Business Research is not only embedded in the regular accreditation process of ERIM as a whole, but also within the (international) accreditation of the RSM, by organizations like AACSB, AMBA, and EQUIS. The RSM is part of an elite group of less than 1% of business schools around the world that hold the “Triple Crown” of accreditation by the three leading international accreditation organizations (AACSB, AMBA, and EQUIS). All programmes offered by RSM, including the programmes offered by ERIM such as the ERIM Master of Philosophy in Business Research, are regularly assessed by these international accreditation organizations.

The MSc in Business Research is a one-year programme which provides students with advanced training in the research skills, techniques and methodologies to conduct their own research in business. Read more

Overview

The MSc in Business Research is a one-year programme which provides students with advanced training in the research skills, techniques and methodologies to conduct their own research in business. The programme can also be taken part-time over two years.
Students who successfully complete the master will have developed the knowledge and skills to begin the preparation of a doctoral thesis and may therefore request admission to the PhD in Business. Attainment of the MSc degree also prepares students for careers in research and policymaking in the public and private sectors. You must note, however, that it is a research-oriented programme and not a professional MBA.
The programme attracts students from around the world. A typical class profile has a percentage of international student of over 60%. As the master is taught in Spanish (55%) and English (45%), a good command of both languages is needed.
The MSc in Business Research offers international research excellence in business administration and management. It also provides the means for students to develop skills and abilities in research that meet the highest standards. Students are exposed to a rich training curriculum as well as a wide offering of master classes, research seminars, workshops and conferences. These offerings shape academic skills and at the same time create sensitivity for practical business opportunities and challenges.

You can find more information on the programme content here: http://www.ub.edu/business-school/msc-in-business-research/#phdb-programmecontent053b-d05d

Students must complete 60 credits comprising 30 core course credits and 30 free-elective credits. Given its research orientation, the master degree requires a teaching model that combines a practical approach with master classes, which provide the conceptual foundations of business research. Lessons in the computer room are essential in order to master statistical techniques and databases.

Career Opportunities

Students who successfully complete the master will have developed the knowledge and skills to begin a doctoral thesis and may therefore request admission to the PhD in Business. This is one of the most popular career choices for MSc in Business Research graduates. In fact, the master is intended to serve as a foundation for doctoral research, which in turn constitutes the first step towards an academic career.
Not all students decide to follow this route, though. Some prefer to make the transition to the labour market straight after finishing their master degree and others wait until they have completed their doctorate. According to data provided by the Catalan government, 95.4% of all PhD social sciences graduates find a job in less than three years, and the unemployment rate is below 3.3%. Therefore, the MSc and the PhD allow students to improve their position in the job market.
The Faculty of Economics and Business has a dedicated Careers Services office, which offers guidance and facilitates employment for graduates. It manages the Job Bank, where companies post job offers and available work placements. The Career Services office also works to strengthen students’ entrepreneurial skills and offers the Coworking Space as a place for developing projects and sharing ideas and strategies.

This programme is unlike many other Master's programmes as it places much more emphasis on original research and the contribution to knowledge, than on taught courses: a major part of the award is based on the dissertation, which makes up two-thirds of the credits required. In this sense, it provides you with a more critical and rigorous exploration of your particular subject area than may be found in a more vocationally orientated Master's programme.

The taught courses support your research: they introduce you to research design and methods, both quantitative and qualitative, appropriate to research in business and economics. At the heart of the programme is the learning contract between you and the research supervisor. The supervisor is an expert in your chosen area and will guide you through the process of: defining the aims of your research project, and its expected deliverables; outlining a suitable programme of work, monitoring its realisation, and helping you to keep your commitments; guiding you to obtaining ethical approval to realise your research programme, if your planned study requires it; identifying any further taught courses and training events (in addition to mandatory ones) to be attended in support of your research project. The supervisor is your first point of contact in the Faculty.

At the end of this degree, you may wish to register for a doctoral programme, since this MA provides a useful taster of research training and experience if you are considering this route.

Students are likely to be brilliant graduates in business or economics, or practising professionals who wish to return to academia and develop advanced research skills applicable to their area of expertise.

The aims of the programme are:

- To develop your research skills in business and economics

- To provide the foundation for future research at MPhil/PhD level.

As a research master student you are considered a member of the department of accounting. For instance, we expect you to participate in our weekly research seminars. We invite during the semesters the best researchers from all over the world to present their most recent work. These seminars give you a good feeling for the type of research questions that are presently relevant.

At the end of the research master you will have become passionate about research. Whether you pursue a career in academia or business, the research master of accounting offers you a world class preparation to pursue either career.

MSc specialization in Finance

The Finance Phd program at Tilburg University has two phases: a preparatory Research Master combining intensive coursework and research that culminates in the writing of a Research Master Thesis (which could later be built out into a chapter of the PhD thesis); and an advanced phase in which students devote all their time to research, at the end of which they complete their PhD dissertation. Most Research Master students are funded by grants given by CentER. PhD students are employees of the University and receive a gross salary of 83000.

Students who have not done graduate work in Finance or Economics before joining the program complete the Research Master in two years. The first year consists of Economics and Econometrics courses preparing the student to specialized work in Finance. The second year is devoted to the Finance Core (four advanced courses in Asset Pricing and Corporate Finance), a few elective courses, and the writing of a Master Thesis. Students who have done graduate work before joining the program are admitted directly in the second year.

After completing the Research Master, students are eligible to start the PhD phase of the program, which typically lasts three years. Supervision during this phase is very close: students often co-author no less than two papers with their supervisors, and write at least one single-author paper under their supervisor’s guidance. Our seminar series (the department hosts over 30 seminars a year with leading scholars from the US and Europe) exposes students to cutting-edge research in all areas of Finance.

Students in the second year of the PhD spend one semester visiting a top University abroad, funded by CentER. These visits provide an early exposure to the international academic scene, create new opportunities of co-authorship, and enrich the students’ network of contacts. Our students have visited Harvard, Yale, London Business School, Caltech, among others.

Most of our PhDs find jobs in Academia. We have a very successful history of placements at top universities in Europe and America, among them Chicago GBS, Toronto Rotman, Cambridge, HEC Paris. Our graduates also show an excellent record of publications, many of them publishing chapters of their theses in top journals shortly after graduation.

Organization & Strategy

TiSEM’s department of Organization and Strategy is a vibrant and internationally diverse department. Its members are drawn from leading universities in North America, Asia and Europe and have a very strong research orientation with a focus on high-quality publications. Research in the Organization & Strategy group covers primarily the research areas of strategic management, international business, organization theory, entrepreneurship, and innovation from a variety of theoretical and empirical, methodological perspectives. The group pursues large-scale empirical analyses, but also encourages theoretical or exploratory research. Our researchers draw on a variety of disciplines and theories, including transaction cost economics, organizational learning, and evolutionary economics, institutional theory, organizational ecology and social network analysis. We welcome and support inter-disciplinary and innovative approaches in research.

Our researchers’ work has recently been published in journals such as the Academy of Management Journal, the Journal of International Business Studies, Management Science, Organization Science, Administrative Science Quarterly, and the Strategic Management Journal.
The department’s RM/PhD students are taught by the department’s leading researchers in small, highly interactive context taking a variety of content and method courses aimed at providing them with the necessary skills and knowledge for conducting high level research. Through the attendance of departmental seminars, participation in departmental events and mentoring by faculty members the students are encouraged to integrate into the department. While supervision styles vary, our graduate students enjoy attentive supervision by committed department researchers. Further, graduate students are encouraged to spend a semester abroad at leading universities/departments relevant to their research projects and are assisted by our faculty members in securing such visits; Wharton, Cass school of business, and Yale business school are among the schools our graduate students have visited recently.

Our graduates have obtained academic positions in leading US, European, and Asian universities (e.g., Texas A&M, Singapore Management University) as well as consulting, and non-academic research jobs.

Introduction

The MRes in Business and Management Research Methods is a specialised degree for those looking to develop the skills to conduct high quality research into business, management, organisations and related areas. Many take the MRes in preparation for undertaking a doctorate (or take MRes modules as part of their first year PhD training) but the skills developed on the MRes will also be invaluable to those looking to conduct, evaluate and commission research in non-academic settings (for example in consultancy, development and policy making roles).
The emphasis is on producing researchers who are reflective and aware of the assumptions, strengths and limitations of their research; who are highly skilled in a multitude of management/organisational research techniques; and who are readily able to apply this knowledge in new and diverse domains. Whilst the programme provides specialist research training for those seeking academic careers employability is also key, with a strong practical focus.

Accreditation

The MRes in Business and Management Research Methods is accredited by the ESRC and the SGSS for training of PhD students.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Master of Philosophy (MPhil)
A higher degree by research involves training in research methods and systematic, high level study of a research project. The nature of the work and the time it takes to finish the research means a research degree is demanding and needs great commitment.

You must present your results in a thesis, explain the methods used in your research and defend them in an oral examination.

To get an MPhil you must critically investigate and evaluate an approved topic and display an understanding of suitable research methods. For a PhD you must also make an independent and original contribution to knowledge.

Split PhD

A split PhD is a research degree programme which is ideal if you are an international student wanting to study from your home country. You register for a Sheffield Hallam University PhD and spend some time studying in Sheffield but are substantially based in your home country. The benefits of studying on the split PhD scheme include
-You can complete fieldwork in your home country, in an area directly linked to your professional or career development interests.
-Access to local facilities and supervisory support in your home country combined with the expert supervisory guidance of our academics.
-Short, intensive periods of face-to-face working with a dedicated supervisory team in Sheffield, while enjoying the educational, social and cultural benefits of studying in the UK.

Materials and Engineering Research Institute (MERI)

MERI is a multi-disciplinary research institute encompassing four research centres each with their own specialist groups operating within them. We undertake high quality academic research across a range of disciplines and apply this research knowledge in a commercial and industrial context. Research areas include: polymers and composites, solar energy, structural integrity and corrosion, functional coatings, simulation and modelling, and robotics.

In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise we were the leading post–92 university in metallurgy and materials (UoA29). 75 per cent of our staff were judged to be internationally leading and we obtained a Times Higher Education average score of 2.15 reflecting the quality of our work and world class staff.

Our staff include: chemists, materials scientists, physicists, computer scientists, mechanical, electronic and electrical engineers, all working on individual or collaborative projects shared between research centres. Supported by a £6m equipment base, which will shortly undergo a £4m refurbishment, this inter-disciplinary approach enables us to solve complex problems ranging from fracture of artificial implants through to designing surfaces that can withstand frictional temperatures in excess of 1,000 degrees centigrade. Solutions to these kinds of problems put MERI at the top in terms of industrial collaboration.

The Materials Research and Analysis Service (MARS) is also a key strength in the research institute, established to provide regional business with access to research facilities and analysis, which enhances the capability of companies in terms of new and improved products.

Evidence of MERI’s research strength is reflected in the patent portfolio that currently consists of 22 granted patents with another 17 applications in progress.
