An American M.A. and a European LL.M. in three years

Thanks to a partnership between AGS and the Law School of Université de Cergy-Pontoise in France, students enrolled in the Master of Arts in International Relations and Diplomacy program at AGS may choose a dual-degree option whereby they earn two Master's degrees over the course of three years:

- A U.S.-accredited M.A. (Master of Arts) in International Relations and Diplomacy
- A Europe-accredited LL.M. (Master of Laws) in French & European Union Law and Business Ethics

In addition, students in this program earn a Certificate in Anglo-Saxon Law from AGS.
This dual program takes place entirely in France, in the Paris area. All courses are instructed in English; additional French language and culture courses are offered to non-French speakers.

:Preparatory courses in Law:

In order to be eligible for the LL.M. program, students who do not have a legal background are required to take four preparatory courses while pursuing their M.A. at AGS:

- American Tort Law
- American Contract Law
- American Criminal Law

Students who successfully complete the four preparatory courses earn a Certificate in Anglo-Saxon Law from AGS. Near completion of these preparatory courses and the AGS degree, qualified students may apply to the LL.M. program at Cergy (see below for details).


:LL.M. in French & European Union Law and Business Ethics at Université de Cergy Pontoise (UCP):

The LL.M. program is a one-year full time program. Courses are taught in English. They take place in the greater Paris area, on the campus of Université de Cergy-Pontoise, accessible by public transportation (RER) from the center city.

The LL.M. in French & European Union Law and Business Ethics at Université de Cergy-Pontoise provides specialized knowledge in French, European Union and International Law for students preparing to work for or in relation with Intergovernmental Organizations, NGOs, European institutions, and International Corporations.

The faculty in the LL.M. program is composed of both academics and lawyers or other professionals. In some cases, seminars are taught by and within international law firms based in Paris. Through this setting, the program provides its students with a network of contacts among the international legal community in Paris.

In addition to the optional French language courses offered at AGS along with the M.A., students follow a course in French Language and Culture at UCP along with the LL.M. courses in the last year. Steps of the Dual Program

1. In their first two years, students complete the M.A. in International Relations and Diplomacy, as well as - for those who do not already have a legal background - four preparatory Law courses at AGS.

Note: although the application process for the LL.M. part of the dual program does not start until the fourth semester, students are strongly encouraged to express their interest in pursuing this dual option as early on as possible so as to schedule the preparatory Law courses as evenly as possible over the four semesters of the International Relations program.

2. In their fourth semester at AGS, students apply to the LL.M. program at UCP.

Thanks to AGS-UCP partnership, students who do not have a legal background are eligible for this program as long as they successfully complete the M.A. in International Relations and Diplomacy as well as the four preparatory courses in Law. The economic and financial aspects of corporate governance relationships have long been of concern to those in the business and investment communities, and in recent years the social, political and moral aspects of these relationships have also become a major public concern. This programme aims to address both these sets of issues and to meet the needs of people wishing to engage critically with the policy aspects of corporate governance as well as those wishing to be involved professionally in the direction and regulation of companies and the management or trusteeship of pension funds and other investments.

The programme is available for full-time study over 1 year or part-time study over 2 years and combines coursework with independent research, leading to a dissertation. You can also choose a specialist pathway through the programme, depending on your interests and career objectives, selecting 1 from: corporate governance and ethics; environmental issues; finance and accounting; or public sector governance. Business Ethics in a Changing World
In a time of financial crisis and corporate abuse, this course explores the complex and often confusing ethical landscape of modern business. It looks at the very real ethical and moral dilemmas faced by business people in a globalized and rapidly changing world. It examines why ethics are important in business, what level of social responsibility we can expect from business leaders, what fosters an ethical culture in businesses and organizations, what contemporary forces in international business are corrupting the fragile and delicatet issue of ethical principle, value-based action, and moral constraint in the global economy as well as examining the complications caused by rapid technological innovation.

SESSION 2: 2 weeks
Global Leadership & International Negotiation – Embracing diversity in the workplace and doing business across borders
Effective global management requires excellent cross-cultural
management skills as well as a good grounding in negotiation fundamentals. Therefore, the first part of the course aims to provide students with practical tools which will enable them to effectively analyze and respond to cross-cultural conflicts that they will encounter in their professional lives by looking at the effect of culture on global business plans, human resource managerial strategies, and social & business gatherings. In the second part of the class, students go beyond theories, and through a series of practical case studies, will have the opportunity to improve their interpersonal skills in intercultural negotiation situations including preparing for negotiations, effective negotiation strategy, responding to arguments and overcoming cognitive, emotional, cultural and institutional obstacles as well as touching briefly on multi-party and agent negotiations and overcoming conflict through mediation.

This one-year programme (two years part-time) provides an ideal academic environment for those who would like to study the subject at a higher level in preparation for a PhD or as a basis for future employment. Significant numbers of former students go on to further study. The programme includes research training and allows you to write a substantial dissertation on a topic you wish to pursue at PhD level. Learning and Teaching

The Taught MA in Philosophy provides the opportunity for in-depth engagement with areas of philosophy in which the Durham department has internationally recognised expertise. In the process, students develop critical abilities and independent research skills that prepare them for further postgraduate study in Philosophy and for a wide range of careers where such skills are highly prized.

Students choose three optional ‘topic’ modules from a list of approximately twelve. They are also required to take a ‘philosophical research methods’ module and to complete a double-module dissertation. Topic modules are taught via seven two-hour seminars and two one-to-one tutorials. Seminars incorporate staff-led discussion of topics, student presentations and small group discussions, in the context of a friendly, supportive environment. Seminars serve to (i) familiarise students with topics, positions and debates, (ii) help them to navigate the relevant literature, (iii) refine their oral and written presentation skills and (iv) further develop their ability to independently formulate, criticise and defend philosophical positions. Students are expected to do approximately four hours of reading for each seminar. Having completed the seminar-based part of the module, they decide upon an essay topic, having received guidance from the module leader. At this point, they begin a more focused programme of reading and independent study, and also benefit from two one-to-one supervisions with an expert in the relevant field. These supervisions provide more focused teaching, tailored to a student’s chosen essay topic. Supervisions further enable students to develop and refine their own philosophical positions, convey them clearly and support them with well constructed arguments.

The core modules of the programme are the ‘Philosophical Research Methods’ module and the double-module Dissertation. The former consists of ten seminars of 2 hours duration. Seven of these introduce students to different philosophical methodologies and to contrasting conceptions of what philosophy is. Critical refection upon the nature of philosophy, cultured through seminar discussions and subsequent reading, equips them with the ‘meta-philosophical’ skills required to write a ‘Philosophical Methods’ essay. The other three seminars include training in library use, referencing, writing abstracts, structuring an MA-level essay and other research-related matters. They also include focused advice and discussion concerning dissertation proposals, which students are required to submit as part of this module.

Having completed the three topic modules and the research methods module, students start work on their dissertations. They are offered six one-to-one tutorials of up to an hour each, with a supervisor who will be an expert in their chosen field. There is also a ‘dissertation mini-conference’ in August, where students present work from their dissertation and receive feedback from members of staff and from their peers. The supervisions and the conference both help them to further refine skills acquired during the academic year (such as presenting and defending an argument in a clear, structured fashion) and to complete a substantial piece of high quality independent research. Through the conference, they also engage with the work of other students in ways that are mutually informative.

In addition to this core teaching, students benefit from a range of activities, including an MA Master-class, a student-led ‘work-in-progress group’ and regular meetings of EIDOS, the department’s postgraduate philosophy society. They are welcomed as full participants in the department’s research culture, and are thus strongly encouraged to attend a range of other events, including weekly Research Seminars, and occasional Royal Institute of Philosophy Lectures, conferences, workshops and reading groups. The programme director remains in regular contact with the students throughout the year and is always available to discuss any issues that might arise (personal or academic).

What is the Masters about

This postgraduate programme brings theory to life through its exciting work placement element and applied learning focus, enabling participants to apply acquired knowledge and competencies in a real-world workplace environment.

This programme equips graduates with the attributes required by business, to make an immediate contribution to the organisation through the work placement experience element of the programme.

The Industrial Placement is of four months duration, from May to August, and will afford the student a unique opportunity to implement and reflect on the theories learned on the programme. It will complement the student’s education and broaden the skill set. A range of multi-national companies, together with large and medium indigenous enterprises have agreed to be part of the placement process. Work placement is recognised by prospective employers and students alike as being a very sought after aspect of an academic programme.

The other new aspect of this programme is the module ‘Communication for Professional Life’. As communication skills are generally deemed an integral element of enquiry-based learning, this module will prepare graduates for executive and leadership scenarios which require negotiation and persuasive expertise and ability with the written word.

Exit Award:
The MB and Postgraduate Diploma (Embedded Exit Award) programmes are designed for graduates of Bachelor of Business Honours Degrees (Level 8) or equivalent. Students who successfully complete 60 credits of the MB programme will be eligible for the Postgraduate Diploma in Business (Level 9) should they opt to leave the programme.

What are the entry requirements

Graduates of programmes in Engineering, Science, Design and other disciplines are required to have completed the Higher Diploma in Business in Management (Level 8) or equivalent to be eligible for admission to the MB programme.

All applicants will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Criteria to be considered will include academic qualifications, recognition of prior learning and or the applicant’s performance in GMAT or equivalent. Lifelong Learning reserves the right to require applicants to attend for an interview to determine their suitability for the programme.

Boardroom Experience

Strategic Business Project

Teaching and Assessment

You will be taught through a combination of lectures, tutorials, seminars, group work and self-directed study. Assessment is through a variety of methods including presentations, essays and case studies.

Your precise timetable will depend on the mode of study you choose to take, however you will normally attend a contact week at the beginning of each semester together with another in week 7 of the academic calendar with timetabled taught sessions (lectures and tutorials) and guest speakers. We expect you to undertake at least 114 further hours of independent study to complete project work and research for each module.

- Site Visits, Foreign Trip and Motorsport Business Reflection affords students the perfect opportunity to interact with the motorsport world through visiting various motorsport sites such as Donnington, the MSA and Prodrive. - Ethics in Sports Management and Governance concentrates on ethical issues in the modern sports industry and explores crises in the sector. Entrepreneurial and innovation driven firms from mature and emerging economies are increasingly taking advantage of global markets and seeking to improve their international strategies and operations.

Learning, teaching and assessment

You will be assessed through a mixture of examinations and coursework. In addition, you will prepare a dissertation which will either be a business plan for an entrepreneurial venture or an investigation with a focus on entrepreneurship.

About the MBA program at JCU

JCU’s business administration programs provide advanced knowledge, understanding and analytical skills for managing in the 21st century. This involves using a wide range of knowledge and research from the social sciences, applied sciences and humanities to develop interdisciplinary and thematic frameworks that enable managers to successfully analyse, strategically plan and implement decisions.
The disciplines of economics, finance, marketing, human resource management, accounting, business law, information technology, strategy and leadership, and statistics are used to understand the key themes that confront all managers and organisations.

Entry requirements (Additional)

English band level 1 - the minimum English Language test scores you need are:
*Academic IELTS – 6.0 (no component lower than 5.5), OR
*TOEFL – 550 (plus minimum Test of Written English score of 4.0), OR
*TOEFL (internet based) – 79 (minimum writing score of 19), OR
*Pearson (PTE Academic) - 57

If you meet the academic requirements for a course, but not the minimum English requirements, you will be given the opportunity to take an English program to improve your skills in addition to an offer to study a degree at JCU. The JCU degree offer will be conditional upon the student gaining a certain grade in their English program. This combination of courses is called a packaged offer.
JCU’s English language provider is Union Institute of Languages (UIL). UIL have teaching centres on both the Townsville and Cairns campuses.

Minimum English Language Proficiency Requirements

Applicants of non-English speaking backgrounds must meet the English language proficiency requirements of Band 1 – Schedule II of the JCU Admissions Policy.
