Degree information

Students will understand how business is taught in schools, how pupils learn and make sense of the evolving nature of business. This is reflected in the range of business related courses that are now offered by schools, sixth forms and colleges, with the focus in some instances on entrepreneurship, work skills and new business technologies.

Students will be joining the largest Business PGCE programme in the country, allowing them to benefit from a team of tutors with a wide range of expertise of business, both inside and outside of the classroom. Students will also be able to develop strong peer networks, share ideas, resources and advice amongst your cohort of fellow students.

Students undertake two level 7 (Master’s-level) modules of 30 credits each, totaling 60 credits. These can be carried forward onto full Master’s programmes at the IOE.

The Secondary PGCE consists of three core modules: two Master’s-level (level 7) modules, which are assessed through written assignments, and the Professional Practice module, which is assessed by the observation of practical teaching in placement schools.

Completion of the Professional Practice module and the two level 7 (Master’s level) modules (60 credits) will result in the award of a Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE). Completion of the Professional Practice module and one or two level 6 (undergraduate/Bachelor’s level) modules, will lead to the Professional Graduate Certificate of Education (PgCE). There are no optional modules for this programme

Placement
You will spend most of your time (120 days) in schools, working with business studies mentors who support you through your two school placements. We are fortunate to have a good choice of schools with whom we work, with many outstanding mentors and strong business studies departments. The Professional Practice module is assessed through these placements, associated tasks and a portfolio.

Teaching and learning
The programme is delivered via keynote lectures, subject lectures, seminars, workshops, tutorials and directed study days at the IOE, as well as time spent in placements. Assessment is by practical teaching, assignments and portfolio tasks.

Students also record their progress in an assessment record file (ARF). This will form part of an ongoing portfolio charting the student's continuing professional development.

Careers

Graduates of this programme are currently working across a broad range of areas. Some are working as teachers of business and economics education, while others have jobs as middle and senior managers in schools. Graduates in this area can also be found working as education officers, initial teacher educators, teachers in international schools and as entrepreneurs running businesses offering consultancy in schools.

The Secondary Postgraduate Certificate in Education is a one academic year (36 week) course that trains graduates to be secondary school teachers of Mathematics.

The PGCE programme has been designed to train teachers to practice as a subject specialist teacher for the secondary age range (11-16). Trainees are assessed against the standards for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) across the age range. Trainees will also often gain experience of the 16-18 age range, although they will not be formally assessed in this phase.

Course detail

The course is active and practical allowing trainees to develop professional competence through work undertaken in schools and in the University. Trainees work with young people, develop their expertise in their specialist subject area, share and discuss educational issues and study relevant educational research. The course is just the beginning of what we hope will be a process of continual professional development throughout a challenging and rewarding career.

This is a recently added PGCE Secondary strand at UWE, run from September 2008. Teachers completing this route will be in a very strong position to gain employment. In the current climate of under-recruitment to mathematics teaching this course will enable participants to train to teach this shortage subject as well as being able to draw upon their knowledge of a Business/Economic/Finance degree.

Structure

The course is part of the Department of Education's programme for Initial Teacher Training. Units studied are:

• Meeting Curriculum Challenges
• Becoming a Teacher

These units are studied in both the school and the University-based parts of the course, the work on each site being complementary.

This course will prepare you for teaching mathematics across the 11-16 age range, at Key Stages 3 and 4/GCSE. It will also prepare you to teach Business Education in school to young people in the 14-19 age range, including at GCSE and A level.

Throughout the course you will need to work at developing your personal subject knowledge in mathematics, business and ICT. Trainees will also learn about how best to teach, explain, demonstrate, connect, and bring to life these subjects for pupils. During subject sessions at UWE, you will be introduced to ideas and resources for teaching, see a variety of teaching approaches and learning activities, observe and evaluate videos of lessons, be introduced to how to plan for effective learning, and spend time discussing the many issues relating to learning. You will also gain experience of the real-life community and business contexts where these subjects are applied.

Format

We recognise that embarking on a new course of study can sometimes be quite a challenging undertaking. Students have three main sources of support and information from the University during the course: firstly there is the Group Tutor in their subject area, secondly each student is allocated a Personal Tutor and thirdly any student can get support on a range of issues from the Department Student Adviser.

Placements

A substantial proportion of the PGCE course is spent in school, learning about the school environment, observing and teaching. You will gain teaching experience in two complementary school/college placements. You will be supported by a Subject Mentor and a Senior Professional Tutor.

These staff and other teachers and colleagues within the school will support you in your learning to teach, assess, and manage classes. You will have the opportunity to enhance your experiences of working with young people further during the PGCE year in UWE and through your school placements, for example by taking part in master-classes and other activities with pupils from Partnership schools, by attending educational visits, working with young people in out-of-school contexts, or by participating in cross-curricular and extra-curricular activities.

Assessment

In order to pass the course, trainees are required to pass each unit. They are assessed on a number of written assignments and also on classroom practice against the standards specified by the Secretary of State for the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

Careers / Further study

The Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) programmes now include 40 credits of assessment at Master's Level (Level M). For candidates who opt not to attempt the requisite credit at Level M, a Professional Graduate Certificate in Education will be available as an alternative award.

The PGCE Secondary Business Education course consists of a variety of learning experiences designed for those wishing to train as teachers. The majority of the course focuses upon practical training in teaching and learning related skills. This practical training is underpinned by the development of participants' knowledge and understanding of education theories, ideas and concepts and by enhancing their awareness of current educational issues and developments. The Secondary course prepares graduates to teach the National Curriculum and related national strategies, GCSE, AS and A2 level. The choice of which qualification to take will be made while on the course, successful completion of which will lead to recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

What will I study?

The course aims to develop an understanding of the specialist subject in the context of the National Curriculum. In particular, the principles involved in the teaching and learning of the subject across the full age and ability range and the professional values and practice, subject knowledge and understanding commensurate with the particular subject specialism. This includes how children learn and how they develop cognitively, socially and physically and the understanding, skills and personal qualities necessary for managing the learning environment.

All trainees undertake a module concerned with the wider context of schools and education. This develops the knowledge, skills and attitudes required for your first teaching post in a secondary school. It also builds a foundation for further professional development. Elements of this module include both whole cohort keynote lectures and seminars, many of which are led by mixed groups of trainees supported by tutors. This allows you to meet the Teacher Standards by making secure connections between issues in school and your own professional practice.

Assessment

University-based modules: Learning and Teaching in the Subject, and Learning and Teaching in the Wider Context, are assessed at the end of the modules with reflection against the Teacher Standards. You will also conduct a piece of research-based, professional enquiry within the classroom, which is assessed by a formal written report and presentation of findings. A separate, formal assessment also takes place in practical teaching.

Placements

School or college experience is central to the course and at least 24 weeks are spent on placement in at least two different secondary schools or colleges. During the first phase, two days of school or college experience each week for three weeks are spent in school leading up to a six-week block placement. The second phase begins with a two day, weekly attachment for the first three weeks of the spring term, leading up to the final assessed 13-week block placement. In both placements the training programme is planned by mentors to allow progressive acquisition of the skills, knowledge and understanding students need to be recommended for the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

Students are formally observed on a regular basis by their subject mentor as well as receiving a number of visits from the University, to monitor their progress, support their development and undertake their assessment.

Course content

After a one week Induction Programme, you will be in school on serial and block placements to gain a supported understanding of the role of the teacher. Within a school, you will receive expert support from a subject or class mentor who will hold weekly meetings with you to help you to prepare, teach and review lessons and develop your subject knowledge.

Each school or college will have a professional mentor who will help you to understand the organisation of the school, pastoral care systems and the legal and social framework of school including supporting services.

Associate Teachers have a phased introduction to teaching that will reflect your personal needs. Initially you will observe the regular teacher, help with group work and then move towards sharing classes with the teacher before eventually taking classes yourself. As well as teaching your subject, you will be required to contribute generally to the life of the school.

The university element of the course is designed to engage Associate Teachers in critical reflection on the nature of education. We also aim to develop your knowledge of Economics and Business Studies. Group and individual tutorials in the university will give you an opportunity to discuss your ideas and the challenges you may face.

The university aspects of the course take place on the Stoke campus and will draw upon the experience of practicing teachers as well as highly experienced tutors. The school experience is based in local, carefully selected partnership schools.

The blend of practical experience and university study will be evidenced by the compilation of portfolios and the production of short written academic papers.

Business, ethics and society investigates and activates the role of business as ethical and social leaders. The specialisation equips students with an understanding of the theoretical foundations and practical issues of internal and external ethical and societal forces that businesses face, respond to and activate. Business, ethics and society especially develops students' critical engagement and leadership capabilities to manage diversity, inclusiveness, and work and life. These capacities are developed within a strong context of ethics and corporate responsibility, and the domestic and international environments in that organisations operate. The specialisation prepares students for active managerial roles within organisations in the private, public and not-for-profit sectors.

Commercialisation

Commercialisation is the process or cycle of introducing a new product or production method into the market. The commercialisation process or cycle can be applied in many different contexts, including: art, design, and architecture; arts and humanities; business and economics; education; engineering; information technology; law; medicine, nursing and health sciences; pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences; and science and technology. The specialisation provides a comprehensive business-focused setting to help students develop the necessary business and entrepreneurial acumen and commercialisation knowledge to succeed. Commercialisation especially develops students' new venture finance, patenting, innovation, and wealth pathways skills and knowledge. Information technology

The information technology discipline allows students to build upon the core program with six units dealing with current practices and emerging strategies for the application of information technology in business management. Students are introduced to management of the creation, storage, recall and dissemination of business records within organisation-wide frameworks and they will gain a high-level of understanding of the processes of project management. Units are taught by the Faculty of Information Technology.

Law and responsible business

The fortunes of a business can quickly turn around if it does not pay proper attention to the laws that regulate its organisation and activities. The law provides the framework for all aspects of business from the internal management of business organisations to their relationships with clients, consumers and the public. The units in this specialisation provide students with an understanding of the legal framework within which business operates and the fundamental laws that regulate business activities and transactions, with particular emphasis on how legal and social responsibility considerations should impact business decision-making.

Managing human capital

Managing human capital is the recognition of people as valuable contributors, and the systems and operations for investing in people to enhance their contributions. The specialisation equips students with an understanding of the theoretical foundations and practical issues of managing and developing people within an international context. Managing human capital develops students' strategic and operational people management knowledge and skills, particularly for diverse, inclusive, and productive workplaces. Degree information

Students will understand how business is taught in schools, how pupils learn and make sense of the evolving nature of business. This is reflected in the range of business related courses that are now offered by schools, sixth forms and colleges, with the focus in some instances on entrepreneurship, work skills and new business technologies.

Students will be joining the largest Business PGCE programme in the country, allowing them to benefit from a team of tutors with a wide range of expertise of business, both inside and outside of the classroom. Students will also be able to develop strong peer networks, share ideas, resources and advice amongst your cohort of fellow PGCE Business students.

Students undertake two Master’s-level (level 7) modules of 30 credits each, totaling 60 credits. These can be carried forward onto full Master’s programmes at the IOE.

The Secondary PGCE consists of three core modules: two Master’s-level modules, which are assessed through written assignments, and the Professional Practice module, which is assessed by the observation of practical teaching in placement schools.

Completion of the Professional Practice module and the two level 7 (Master’s level) modules (60 credits) will result in the award of a Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE). Completion of the Professional Practice module and one or two level 6 (undergraduate/Bachelor’s level) modules, will lead to the Professional Graduate Certificate of Education (PgCE). There are no optional modules for this programme.

Much of the teaching on the course takes the form of interactive workshops, but there are also lectures from staff and visiting speakers. Approach to assessment

Each module is assessed individually, generally on the quality of written or visual presentation work, and to some extent on verbal presentations. The majority of assessments are based on individual assignments, but there is some assessed group work.

Field trips

By listening to our students and recognising the need for practice-oriented business and management education, we have introduced new ways to engage with companies from the public and the non-profit sector. We also host a number of guest speakers throughout the year who bring their business and management experience and expertise to the classroom.

We also offer the International Business in Practice - Study Trip. The purpose of this Study Trip Module is to give postgraduate students a hands-on, intensive experience with the ideas and practices of global business. The programme will include presentations from local management executives and experts. - The accreditation of this course by the CMI. This enables our students to be in closer contact with the local branch of CMI and take part in their events, lectures and company visits.

You will develop the ability to apply your knowledge and understanding of business and management to complex issues by:
- Being encouraged to critically review (both individually and through group activities) real-world cases

- Your involvement in group work with an international group of students. This provides you with different and interesting perspectives on the world, enhancing your business and management knowledge

- Being encouraged to integrate knowledge and understanding across the modules, mirroring the complexities of decision making across the functional units of an organisation

- Taking a professional business-like approach to your studies, providing oral and written presentations to a high standard.

You will develop an understanding and gain experience of global business issues through:
- Being encouraged to appreciate that decision making must be informed from a variety of stakeholder perspectives of a national, international and inter-cultural nature

- Taking the International Business In Practice: Study Trip module. This gives you a hands-on, intensive experience. You will explore the impact of the national and international business environment upon business decision making, being aware of the different cultural perspectives that operate to inform ideas and issues.

You will develop an understanding of responsible risk management and sustainable value creation on the basis of the environmental, social and governance impacts of business through:
- Being encouraged to critically evaluate evidence drawn from a wide variety of sources being mindful of bias and subjectivity

- Being guided to demonstrate increasing competence in self-management, communication, team working and problem solving.

You will gain lifelong learning and personal development by:
- Developing as an independent learner with the ability to diagnose, plan and implement personal learning objectives

- Exploring the world you inhabit, not just from the specific discipline of business. Increasingly other disciplines influence and impact upon business and management decision making

- Taking the Personal Development and Leadership module which helps you develop your skills of reflection

- Engaging with our alumni association, which provides a framework for you to stay in touch with your network well beyond the course.

You will graduate with highly relevant knowledge as well as practical experiences on how to manage different functional units in organisations.

Many of our graduates find managerial positions at a wide range of organisations, including companies producing fast moving commercial goods, airlines, financial institutions, retail giants and charities.
