Cybersecurity is a fast developing and exciting subject. There is an unprecedented rise in cybercrime, cyber attacks and cyber threats to individuals, businesses and society. Resilient cybersecurity systems and infrastructures attempt to prevent attack and protect individuals and businesses from such attacks.

Course overview

This newly developed Cybersecurity course will provide you with the technical and organisational skills to make a difference to society by providing safe and secure digital environments, allowing the public, business and industry, and the economy to function safely.

As a student studying Cybersecurity, you'll contribute to the wellbeing of society by raising awareness of threats and attacks and designing systems, structures and networks to identify attacks and recover from them allowing business continuity.

The course has been designed to cover a wide range of relevant, interesting and current topics in the cybersecurity field. You'll study industry-specific topics and specialise in areas such as network security, cybersecurity in organisations, big data security and breach and incident response.

Our close links to industry and businesses in the North East, as well as the research expertise of our academics makes this course unique and ensures that the course structure is developed according to the needs of the employment sector. We work alongside the following companies: Net Defence, PWC, Northumbria Police, SAGE, Accenture and Sapphire.

This course will provide you with a thorough grounding in the creation of cybersecurity solutions for information security, systems security and network security. You’ll develop the skills to determine, establish and maintain cybersecurity infrastructures, and you’ll examine the underlying technologies of secure systems and their inherent risks and privacy issues. You’ll also learn how to select appropriate tools and techniques to address and manage risks, threats, vulnerabilities and potential attacks, in order to deliver cyber resilience.

You’ll cover topics such as digital forensic tools, network technologies, security procedures and defensive programming. You’ll also choose an optional module that covers a particular specialism such as big data security, user experience design or artificial intelligence for cybersecurity.

Throughout the course you’ll develop skills and knowledge that give you the confidence to apply cybersecurity tools and techniques; to be innovative in using cybersecurity skills; to solve cybersecurity problems, identify breaches and attacks; to create opportunities for information security management, risk management and business continuity; and to enable effective and efficient implementation of cybersecurity systems and infrastructures.

You’ll be taught by research active academics that have a wealth of experience, and the research produced underpins the teaching you'll receive.

The course is pending accreditation from the British Computer Society, the UK’s Chartered Institute for IT.

We use a wide variety of teaching and learning methods which include lectures, group work, research, discussion groups and seminars.

Compared to an undergraduate course, you will find that this Masters requires a higher level of independent working. Assessment methods include written reports and research papers, practical assignments and the Masters project.

Mohammad is responsible for the strategic leadership of the Faculty of Arts, Environment and Technology,having joined our University in June 2011 from the University of East London. A well published researcher, with over 50 refereed conference and Journal publications, his research profile includes many funded research programmes including JISC and EU FP7 projects. Mohammad’s first degree was in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. He then went on to complete a PhD in the 'Design, Development and Evaluation of Multimedia Based Learning Systems' at Kingston University. In 1989 he set up one of the UK's first multimedia PC companies, 'Systems 2000'.

Study Information
We provide a wide variety of support, through tutors and materials, to our students studying by distance learning or on-campus.

Books & Materials
All modules use a range of paper-based and online materials.

Feedback
Students will receive feedback on all assessments as well as responses to specific queries raised during their study of any particular Module. Receipt of any communication will generally be acknowledged within 7 working days and written feedback will be supplied.

Assessment

Professional Affiliations

Holders of the MSc Risk Management are entitled to a standard award of 60 non unit specific credits at Advanced Diploma level from the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII).

Graduates holding the MSc Risk Management from GCU are also entitled to be granted substantial exemptions from the examination requirements of the Institute of Risk Management (IRM).

The focus of the degree is on equipping the professional ‘risk manager’. About the Programme

This course aims to provide an opportunity to study intelligence and international security in an empirically grounded, practical and serious way, equipping students to apply these skills in related or complementary areas. The Intelligence and International Security course is specially designed to appeal to those working in security and defence communities, government ministries and related corporate sectors, drawn from domestic and international markets.

Structure

The programme runs over 12 months to 36 months depending on the qualification. There are three levels of qualification, each leading to the next – Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma and MSc.

Delivery

The individual modules are delivered in what is known as block format. So, as opposed to the usual style of university courses which are two or three hours of contact time per week over a ten week term, these modules are delivered in four full working days of contact time, with then guided study, tutor contact, and deliverables rounding the module off.

Students will be taught – via innovative teaching techniques about the cornerstone concepts and practice of intelligence, risk, and emergency. Students will be given the opportunity to be involved in hands-on crisis and emergency simulations in order to provide a comprehensive academic and professional training experience in the field of intelligence and international security.

Human initiated disasters such as the Twin Towers collapse and the Madrid and London bombings have had an enormous impact on security systems and world travel. Biologically based disasters such as SARS and bird flu similarly have had worldwide impact.

The MSc in Humanitarian Logistics and Emergency Management is a unique programme and is the first in the world to combine the academic disciplines of humanitarian logistics and emergency management. The programme builds on the established strengths and reputation of Ireland and in particular Irish Aid, in delivering humanitarian assistance to those in need.

The organizations providing the first phase of disaster response need the capacity and capabilities to deliver goods and services quickly to those impacted by an event. In an increasingly complex and rapidly changing global business environment, the management of risk requires a broad range of skills, knowledge and experience.

The MSc Risk Management programme provides an in depth understanding of risk and their application in practice both for financial and non-financial organisations. Module Details

The course is a mixture of taught units and a research project, covering:

hazard, vulnerability and risk assessments; disaster risk reduction; emergency planning; crisis management; logistics and financial planning; business continuity; community resilience; humanitarian emergency response, and disaster management techniques, such as Geographical Information Systems (GIS).

Programme Assessment

You will be part of a large postgraduate community in a vibrant and friendly department. The course units are delivered as a series of three-day teaching blocks, at three to four-week intervals from October to May, with all assessment by coursework assignments. Formal classes, such as lectures and seminars, enable you to gain the relevant knowledge, which is developed further through activity-based practicals, simulation exercises and study visits. The in-class teaching is supplemented by extensive use of web-based and library learning resources.

Assessment is varied, aimed at developing skills relevant to a range of working environments. Here’s how we assess your work:

Student Destinations

The vocational nature of the course will give you transferable skills such as project planning, literature and data reviewing, field mapping, report writing, meeting deadlines, team work, presentation, communication and emergency simulation exercises. It also has strong research and analytical components, providing training for those who are interested in pursuing further research at PhD level.

You will have the opportunity to complete voluntary work placements with organisations (businesses, government departments, NGOs) in the emergency planning and disaster management sector, in the UK and overseas. Jobs are largely within the following sectors: emergency planning, crisis communication, epidemiology, risk management, insurance and re-insurance, utility companies, emergency logistics, civil defence and disaster relief.
