The objective of this program is to build the abilities and skills to develop and lead business in an international and multicultural environment.

What is Business Development?

CNCP RECOGNITION

Students graduating from the MSc Business Development also receive a certificate conferring them the title of Manager International. This title, recognized by the Commission Nationale de la Certification Professionnelle - an agency belonging to the French Ministry of Labor - attests to the successful acquisition of a core of international management skills and knowledge necessary for future roles as managers in an international context. The Manager International label is registered on the Répertoire National des Certifications Professionnelles at Level 1, the highest level for such certification.

At the end of the classroom portion of the program, each student will be required to complete a thesis, known as the Final Management Project. This work is approximately 20,000 words in length and is completed under the guidance of a GGSB tutor.

To successfully complete the Final Management Project, you are required to address a particular research question or knowledge gap in the field of your study.

This should be business oriented and coherent with your program’s objectives. You may choose to write your Final Management Project on a topic grounded in your internship experience.

During this program, participants will have the opportunity to become real-life business developers by exploring a Live Business Case provided by companies working in partnerships with the MSc Business Development program. The work students do on the Live Business Case is closely linked to the International Study Residency. Students will work in groups, delving deeply into their cases during the seven months from October to June under the supervision of a GGSB coach.

EXPECTATIONS AND OBJECTIVES FOR MSC BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT STUDENTS

The Live Business Cases are launched by a briefing given by the company.

The Live Business Case will cover:

- Looking at business development and management issues from an integrated, holistic perspective,
- Provide students with a final opportunity to apply learning from the material, courses and lectures that they have studied.

At the conclusion of the Live Business Case, students will be able to:

- Build a company analysis
- Select and apply a methodology, and make useful and efficient recommendations
- Understand the Business Development process
- Provide critical analysis
- Make strategic decisions
- Work in small multicultural groups under time constraints
- Produce compelling written and oral presentations
- Demonstrate communication, negotiation and leadership skills

At the end of 7 months of the Live Business Case, each group will produce a written report and make an oral presentation to the Jury (company tutor, school tutor and program director) and the other groups from the program.

International Residency Trip: An Amazing Opportunity!

As part of the MSc Business Development program, students have the opportunity to visit one emerging economy each year (Brazil, Russia, China, India). The goal is to create an integrated learning experience for all participants.

The International Residency Trip combines academic lectures, corporate visits, and cultural activities. The students gain extensive knowledge of global business practices to prepare them as business developers that consistently perform across cultures and compete in a global market. The International Residency Trip is linked with the Live Business Case and students will have the amazing opportunity to visit important companies.

FOREIGN LANGUAGES

Foreign language skills are essential in business today and the program is taught in English but provides the possibility to learn a foreign language at the same time.
No prior knowledge of French is required to attend the program. Non-French speakers may study French, native and fluent French speakers will have the possibility to choose from Spanish or Chinese. The language component is not compulsory.

MANAGERIAL CREATIVITY: A SELF MANAGEMENT METHOD

This course/ work shop is an introduction to all group assignments to be carried out all through the year. In order to help you be efficient when working in small groups, you need to know not only your personal strengths and improvement points but also those of your class.

By discovering them during this course, you'll be able to imagine together how to leverage the strengths of your class and how to manage the improvement points. You have to manage the classroom as a company so we will appoint the different representatives in charge of taking care of the main aspects of the construction of the class as a performing team: event manager, class representative, time keeper, project leader, MSC community leader, Alumni communication and coordination manager. Teaching and Assessment

You will be taught through a combination of lectures, tutorials, seminars, group work and self-directed study. Assessment is through a variety of methods including presentations, essays and case studies.

Your precise timetable will depend on the mode of study you choose to take, however you will normally attend a contact week at the beginning of each semester together with another in week 7 of the academic calendar with timetabled taught sessions (lectures and tutorials) and guest speakers. We expect you to undertake at least 114 further hours of independent study to complete project work and research for each module.

Course Modules

- History, Structure and Governance of Motorsport aims to provide a solid theoretical background on key themes within the context of the history and development of motorsport. This module will also provide a thorough understanding of the roles, responsibilities and operating framework of the key regulatory and commercial organisations within the motorsport industry

- Site Visits, Foreign Trip and Motorsport Business Reflection affords students the perfect opportunity to interact with the motorsport world through visiting various motorsport sites such as Donnington, the MSA and Prodrive. Industry leaders will offer an insight into their roles and the organisation’s objectives within motorsport

- Ethics in Sports Management and Governance concentrates on ethical issues in the modern sports industry and explores crises in the sector. You will develop an agenda for reform and examine legal and organisational frameworks relating to problem areas in sport. This module also covers existing regulations, management and governance in relation to other business and cultural areas

- Sports Heritage and Legacy Management will consider the development of heritage and legacy in sport by examining the legal, academic, cultural, commercial and political frameworks relevant, both nationally and internationally. The module will include visits to key sport venues and museums, as well as travel to Rome for historical context

- Sponsorship Models in Elite Motorsport and the Role of the Media offers the opportunity to look at a wide range of commercial principles as applied through third party support and sponsorship of motorsport activity. Commercial case studies and lectures from industry experts will form a central part of this module

- Commerce within Motorsport provides the opportunity to analyse a wide range of commercial principles applied within the motorsport industry. From budgeting and financial management of competing in motorsport as a driver or team, the costs of managing motorsport venues, sponsorship and brand activity through to the need for fan engagement

- Motorsport Brands, their Extension and Future Trends explores a range of topics related to the current and future commercial rationale for brands becoming associated with motorsport. You will critically assess what brands look for in their association with motorsport and identity how this is likely to evolve in the future

- Work Professionalism Skills focuses on commercial employability skills, enabling students to undertake the Executive Company Project and post-study job applications and interviews with a professional and prepared approach.

- Executive Company Project gives you the opportunity to create an individual and sustained piece of work to address a specific area in the field of business management and sport. This will involve a dissertation supported by appropriate background research and the application of theoretical knowledge

The Kingston MBA is also delivered with our partners in Moscow at the Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration (RPANEPA). We offer two programmes: an MBA and an Executive MBA. Assessment

Our assessment methods reflect the skills and experiences you will value the most when you graduate. We will make sure you are thoroughly prepared for your assessments, which include written assignments, discussions, group work, presentations, case studies, role plays and game simulations.

Course structure

The Kingston MBA is a highly flexible programme of study. You need to gain 180 postgraduate credits overall, but you select your modules from a wide range of possibilities. This means you can specialise in the areas that are most relevant to your current and future career.

Your 180 credits break down into separate components:

MBA students have the opportunity to participate in a range of talks and activities designed to help them develop their personal and career management skills. Some past examples are described below.

Guest speaker sessions

John Lees, an internationally recognised career coach and careers writer, shared a number of insights into the changing job market and the skills individuals need to manage their career. Students were provided with a number of practical tools to help them identify their skills, focus on their career drivers, as well as think about their ideal job and the strategies needed to secure employment in a world where many jobs are never advertised.

Vicky Reeves, entrepreneur and Managing Director of the London-based web solutions company ChameleonNet, gave an inspiring and candid talk on the highs and lows of developing a successful business. She talked about how she has grown the company from a micro business to one that now employs around 30 people. She spoke about the skills that she has developed along the journey, how to go about getting the right advice and support, as well as providing some humorous stories to demonstrate the creative skills needed when running your own business.

Group projects

Students have worked on a number of group projects. One of these involved producing a design proposal for a dedicated postgraduate common room within the School. The Postgraduate Certificate is made up of the following two modules:

For the Masters phase, as well as the four modules above, the choice is between completing a dissertation or a business development plan:

• Research Methods (15 credits) and Dissertation (45 credits)

Format

The course is team based and uses a 'learning by doing' approach. In training sessions, you will be supported by an experienced team coach. As well as undertaking projects based on 'wicked problems' (complex issues requiring input from different perspectives and backgrounds), you will have opportunities to bring your own startup ideas and benefit from the input of other team members.

Masterclasses are highly interactive and are led by academic and industry experts, whilst online delivery of some modules allows you to engage with individual study units as and when they are most relevant to you.

Group working is a key element and you will have plenty of opportunity to practise and develop your team working capabilities. The opportunities to share learning across multi-disciplinary teams will also help you to learn more, and at a faster rate.

Assessment

The assessment on this course is designed to demonstrate that you can apply theory to practice effectively and to develop skills that will be useful in your future career. There are no written exams. Course work assessments include verbal presentations, book reviews, reports, marketing/business plans, project logs and reflective essays.
