The MRes in Business and Management Research Methods is a specialised degree for those looking to develop the skills to conduct high quality research into business, management, organisations and related areas. Many take the MRes in preparation for undertaking a doctorate (or take MRes modules as part of their first year PhD training) but the skills developed on the MRes will also be invaluable to those looking to conduct, evaluate and commission research in non-academic settings (for example in consultancy, development and policy making roles).
The emphasis is on producing researchers who are reflective and aware of the assumptions, strengths and limitations of their research; who are highly skilled in a multitude of management/organisational research techniques; and who are readily able to apply this knowledge in new and diverse domains. Whilst the programme provides specialist research training for those seeking academic careers employability is also key, with a strong practical focus.

Course objectives

The MRes course in Business and Management Research Methods is aimed at students wanting to:
- Undertake doctoral research in business and management.
- Equip themselves for an academic or commercial career in business and management research.
- Undertake, evaluate, commission or manage research in the commercial, public, or voluntary sectors.

Our philosophy is that postgraduate business and management students need the understanding and skills associated with high quality academic research. This approach applies equally to those who become either academic scholars or professional practitioners.
This course also serves as a generic entry point for the Stirling Management School Doctoral Programme. The Stirling Management School is a member institution of the ESRC Scottish Doctoral Training Centre. It welcomes applications for +3 doctoral studentships in the following areas: Accounting and Finance and Business and Management.

The MRes course provides you with broadly based, advanced research training that covers the social science research skills that are relevant for business, management, economic and policy research. On completion of the course students will:
(a) Understand the ontological and epistemological basis of the various research approaches, their limitations and their implications for questions and design.

(b) Be technically skilled in the use of qualitative, quantitative and experimental techniques and to collect and analyse data to an advanced level.

(c) Have the transferable skills to apply this knowledge to the design, conduct and reporting of research projects.

(d) Be able to critically analyse the methodologies used to conduct empirical research projects.

Year 1
During the first semester you will attend lectures and tutorials for core modules that have been selected to provide you with a fundamental underpinning in the subject area of Business and Management. The second semester of the programme commences with an intensive introduction to the 60 credit project, and associated research methods training. This programme is designed for students with a wide interest in international business and management, who are aiming at a management position. All subjects and modules are placed in an international context. The demands placed upon the manager are subject to increasing changes, which arise from the changes that take place in the international business environment and usually effects all business operations.

The Master in International Business and Management programme is a 17 month full-time postgraduate programme for graduates of business-related disciplines, e.g. economics or management studies. The programme challenges students to apply business management theory to current international business practice. It prepares graduates for international management positions by focusing on corporate strategy, marketing, operations, accounting and human resource management, all from an international business perspective.

Educational concept

Our educational concept is characterized by small group sizes, and intensive contact between students and staff. Next to lectures and workshops, students work in teams as well as individually on practice-based and experience-based projects and case studies. The programme consists of two semesters of course work and one semester of applied research in a business context within a period of 17 months, starting in September and ending in January. The total size of the programme is 90 ECTS. You may opt to participate in a double degree programme, in which case you get the opportunity to spend the second semester at Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) in Cambridge, England.

Delivery and assessment

Delivery of the course takes the form of lectures, practical case studies and workshops to allow the theory-practice relationship to be developed and explored, followed by a three-month dissertation period. An important element of the delivery are subject specific practitioners who are able to discuss real-world examples. Assessment is by a mixture of examination and coursework - individual and group, including written assignments and presentations. The two personal and professional development modules are designed and assessed to enable each student to monitor the development throughout the academic year. The MSc award requires you to complete a 15,000-word dissertation.

This programme is suitable for individuals with an academic or professional interest in sport policy, business and management.

The course focuses on topics such as the study of sport politics; sport development in international contexts; leadership and entrepreneurship; project management and sport and the law. The intention is that students will develop the core skills that are needed and can be applied in ‘real-world’ settings.

This programme seeks to prepare students for work in the leisure industry, including HE sports, sports agencies and local authorities by developing high quality graduates in a research active environment. It is expected that students taking the programme will develop the skills to allow them to critically evaluate new developments/theory and integrate this knowledge where appropriate into their professional practice.

Graduates of the programme will be developed as lifelong learners with a conceptual understanding of the theories behind sport policy and management.

Employability

If you are seeking to develop your career in an international context the International Business pathway would be an ideal choice. You will develop the specialist knowledge, understanding and techniques needed to develop and operate businesses in the dynamic and complex international environment.

You will engage in the advanced study of international business management, international relations and international financial management for a diverse range of organisations, and the rapidly changing environments in which they operate internationally. You will enhance both your academic research skills and the practical management skills needed to manage complex business functions in a pragmatic and effective manner and in an international context. In addition to the International Business pathway, there are also specialist pathways available in Marketing, Enterprise, and Accounting.

COURSE STRUCTURE AND CONTENT

The programme is offered in a modular format offering you the greatest choice in tailoring your final degree content to match your academic interest and future career development. You will take a mix of taught modules in the first two trimesters (120 credits) and complete a dissertation/research project (15,000–20,000 words) in the third trimester (60 credits). To achieve the MA you will need to complete 180 credits in total.

The teaching commences with a series of taught interventions designed to promote scholarly endeavour in the research context - resulting in the formulation of a clearly articulated research proposal outlining your research questions and the framing of the detailed work to be undertaken.

The consultancy project or dissertation gives you the opportunity to explain to yourself what you have learned about business and management and to demonstrate how you will apply this knowledge. Writing the consultancy project or dissertation provides you with a unique opportunity to consolidate the evidence you have assembled during the course and to subject it to rigorous academic analysis and practical application. As a guide the consultancy project or dissertation will be between 15,000 and 20,000 words.

Teaching and learning

Much of the teaching on the course takes the form of interactive workshops, but there are also lectures from staff and visiting speakers. Lectures, discussions, role-play exercises and seminars are linked with selected case studies and assessments to strengthen your practical analysis and decision-making skills. You will have the opportunity to develop your skills in working as part of a team through structured group assignments.

Teaching staff at the Business School are researchers and/or from an industry background with an in-depth practical experience of business and management issues. Visiting speakers from business, industry, consultancies and research bodies provide further input.

Approach to assessment

Each module is assessed individually, generally on the quality of written or visual presentation work, and to some extent on verbal presentations. Assessment methods may include reports, seminar papers, formal written examinations, in-class tests, project work, visual and verbal presentations, workshops, simulations, oral exams (viva) and practical exercises. The majority of assessments are based on individual assignments, but there is some assessed group work.

The Business School Postgraduate Centre has a state-of-the-art lecture theatre, well equipped seminar rooms and a postgraduate lounge and private study area.

Field trips

By listening to our students and recognising the need for practice-oriented business and management education, we have introduced new ways to engage with companies from the public and the non-profit sector. You will have the opportunity to visit various company sites organised through our extensive network of corporate contacts and the Chartered Management Institute. We also host a number of guest speakers throughout the year who bring their business and management experience and expertise to the classroom.

We also offer the International Business in Practice - Study Trip. The purpose of this Study Trip Module is to give postgraduate students a hands-on, intensive experience with the ideas and practices of global business. The programme will include presentations from local management executives and experts. Students will have direct interaction with management executives and practices through site visits to major corporations and agencies.

Field trips are optional and may incur a cost.
