The Programme offers two tracks with specific characteristics:
- Architectural Engineering (offered in Lecco), giving students the ability to manage – and take part in – the integrated design process of complex construction projects;
- Building Engineering (offered in Milano Leonardo), giving students the ability to design, model and predict the physical, mechanical, and energy behaviour of complex building components and systems, services and structures.

This track of the Master of Science in Building and Architectural Engineers trains Building Engineers that can manage the complexity of building projects, through the application of engineering principles and tools to building design and construction. The programme
focuses on sustainability, energy efficiency and safety issues in the building sector, considering both horizontal (interdisciplinary) and vertical (life cycle-related) integration.
The Building Engineer is a professional with robust scientific and technical skills ready to:
• engineer the architectural design of complex, large and/or special buildings;
• supervise the design integration of all technological and technical parts (building fabric, structure, building systems);
• manage the whole manufacturing and life cycle of building systems and components;
• organize and control the construction and maintenance process.

More specifically, the Building Engineering programme provides students with knowledge and tools necessary to model the detailed physical and structural behaviour of building components and, in particular, of the building envelope, the filter between the interior and exterior environment. The energy performance of today's new buildings must withstand far more scrutiny than ever before. Those involved or investing in construction projects will need an increasing awareness of these factors to maintain compliance with the law, as tougher EU and UK directives for building performance are drawn up and legislated.

You will use the latest technologies to evaluate building performance, including software to model 2D thermal movement or track moisture. The Building Surveying programme is for those involved in the maintenance, refurbishment, alteration and extension of existing buildings, or in project management and design for public bodies, commercial organisations and professional practice firms.

This programme is accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). Our surveyors look at financing a project, procuring construction work, financial management and the entire construction process. We want our students to have 'real world' experiences while studying at LSBU, of field work is a major component. We create these situations by inviting guest speaks in to give up-to-date lectures, having great industry links and taking our students into situations where they would like to work. Most of our surveying and construction courses give our students the opportunity to carry out a construction project. Their work will take into account current construction technologies, energy efficiency solutions and environmental and sustainability issues. The project is very detailed and is carried out across site visits, analysing on-going construction projects and an appraisal of eco-technologies. These factors can be influenced by a construction's location so our field trips can take our students both overseas to expanding countries like Dubai or round the corner to building developments happening on our own campus.

- Market report and case study analysis
Students on our MSc Surveying courses can choose to study International Real Estate & Construction as an optional. For this complex module students need to go on a study visit to an international city which has an emerging real estate and construction market.

Past students have gone abroad to take in either Dubai in the United Arab Emirates or Shanghai in the People's Republic of China. The field trip includes visits to real estate companies and construction firms, site visits and meetings with various professionals. From these briefings, students need to produce a country report that includes a detailed strategy including how they could break through in the real estate or construction market in these overseas destinations

This module provides an introduction into a set of theoretical principles and practical skills in economics and finance, which enable property professionals to develop, manage and grow successful businesses and understand the impact of globalisation on property markets.

- International valuations and property management
This module gives a practical insight into international valuation standards as well as aspects of portfolio management and bench-marking. Financial calculations that inform the decision-making processes in property management are also covered.

- International property finance
This module looks at the global capital markets for real estate funding and the development of international investment vehicles such as REITs and Sovereign Wealth Funds.

- Corporate real estate management
This modules takes traditional academic theory and applies it with an international perspective through a case study approach: in this case by applying the theory to the real estate strategy of an international business occupier.

- Property investment appraisal
A module to provide a detailed and critical perspective on property investment and an understanding of the context, in which, investment decisions are made and implemented. - Dissertation

- Surveying Project
Our surveyors look at financing a project, procuring construction work, financial management and the entire construction process. We want our students to have 'real world' experiences while studying at LSBU, of field work is a major component. We create these situations by inviting guest speaks in to give up-to-date lectures, having great industry links and taking our students into situations where they would like to work. Most of our surveying and construction courses give our students the opportunity to carry out a construction project. Their work will take into account current construction technologies, energy efficiency solutions and environmental and sustainability issues. The project is very detailed and is carried out across site visits, analysing on-going construction projects and an appraisal of eco-technologies. These factors can be influenced by a construction's location so our field trips can take our students both overseas to expanding countries like Dubai or round the corner to building developments happening on our own campus.

- Market report and case study analysis
Students on our MSc Surveying courses can choose to study International Real Estate & Construction as an optional. For this complex module students need to go on a study visit to an international city which has an emerging real estate and construction market.

Past students have gone abroad to take in either Dubai in the United Arab Emirates or Shanghai in the People's Republic of China. The field trip includes visits to real estate companies and construction firms, site visits and meetings with various professionals. From these briefings, students need to produce a country report that includes a detailed strategy including how they could break through in the real estate or construction market in these overseas destinations.

- Institutional and legal context for property
This module focuses on introducing students to the various areas of law and issues of professional practice used and applied in the construction and property industries.

- Construction and planning
A module to provide a broad and critical perspective on planning and construction, as well as an understanding of the context within which planning and construction decisions are made and implemented.

- Valuations
This module is intended to allow the theoretical knowledge gained in a series of lectures and workshops to be applied in practice. The module will consider the fundamental principles of valuation, valuation formula and discounted cash flows. It will examine the methods used in the valuation of office, retail, industrial and residential properties. The module will also introduce the process of development and redevelopment of property.

- Applied valuations and the management of property interests
This module gives a practical insight into managing property. The roles and responsibilities of both landlords and tenants are considered in property management. Financial calculations that inform property management decisions are also considered.

- Economics for property professionals
This module provides an introduction into a set of theoretical and practical principles that enable property professionals to develop, manage and grow successful businesses.

- Property development process
This module provides a broad and critical perspective on property development and an understanding of the context within which property development decisions are made and implemented.

- Project finance
This module provides the necessary skills and knowledge for project funding, project evaluation and management in the property industry.

- Planning law and practice
This module examines the history of planning and the evolution of the theories, ideas and practices that have underpinned its attempts to intervene in the natural and built environment.

- Dissertation
The module provides the opportunity for students to undertake an independent piece of research, investigating in depth a subject, in which, they have a particular interest and of their own selection. Each student will submit a dissertation of between 15,000- 20,000 words. The module includes teaching of research methods.

The module develops a comprehensive understanding of the decision-making process in any real estate decision and it transition mechanism to market prices.

- Building control
The module focuses upon the control and enforcement of the Building Regulations and associated legislation, along with supporting technical documents and alternative solutions, to meet specific regulative requirements as they apply to various building schemes.

- Building information modelling and collaborative working
A module to provide a general understanding of the role that BIM can play throughout the design, construction and operation of building assets. It looks to identify and develop the necessary managerial, technical and interpersonal skills required to deliver better value through a collaborative BIM approach.

- Health and safety management in construction
This module focuses on the management of safety on site – a process that can be applied to a wide range of work settings and project types.

- History of architecture and construction
This module examines the inter-relationship between building design and production as it occurred throughout historical time. Particular attention will be paid to those periods in history when major transformations occurred in architectural style and the building process. Other historical themes will also be pursued.

- International real estate and construction
This module introduces students to the international context of real estate markets, construction industry and project development. It specifically focuses on the activity of international real estate investors and large construction companies. The module also provides students a comparative perspective on real estate markets and construction process.

- Legal resolution of property and construction disputes
This module focuses on the range of dispute resolution techniques used by construction and property professionals to resolve and manage disputes in the construction and property industries.

- Readiness for direct practice
This module develops practice relevant skills and awareness of the social work role and responsibilities. It will ensure that you are ready for your initial period of direct practice and to provide you with a foundation for skills development throughout the programme. Service users, carers and practitioners will be involved in the development, delivery and assessments of the module.

- Human growth and development
This module critically explores a range of human growth and development theories across the life course in order to facilitate understanding of ordinary development and the impact of life events, disability, abuse, mental health issues, drug and alcohol use on development throughout life. You will complete a series of child observations over the period of the module which provide a key opportunity to integrate theoretical knowledge with practice, and to develop reflective skills.

- Social work Law
This module introduces legal context and statutory responsibilities of social workers in England and Wales. You will be familiarised with the basic principles of English Law and the systems through which the legal process operates. You will be enabled to develop a sound understanding of the key legislation relevant to professional practice. There is a strong focus on the key major current legislation Children Act (1989), the NHS and Community Care Act (1990), the Mental Health Acts (1983 and 2007) and the Mental Capacity Act (2005). The module aims to ensure that you not only understand relevant law but are also able to apply it to specific areas of practice. The module familiarises you with the powers and duties of social workers and others in relation to children and families, and vulnerable adults. It also examines the implications for social work practice of the UK legislation on discrimination and the implications of the incorporation into UK law of the European Convention on Human Rights.

- Methods and theories for practice
This module introduces the core body of knowledge clustered around the major social work theories, processes and methods. A major emphasis will be on anti-discriminatory practice, evidence based practice and critical reflection. You will learn about a range of theoretical perspectives and methods of intervention and their application in practice.

Year 2:
- Society and ethics
This module brings together selected key areas of social policy and ethics relevant to social work. There will be a strong emphasis on the use of social policy to illuminate the challenges facing and social work in contemporary British society. Using a critical analysis of the impact of neo-liberalism and globalisation the module will be a focus on the ethical dimensions of decision making and practice delivery of policy. You will be encouraged to engage with contemporary debates and controversies associated with social work and to relate your work in class, with your reading and developing practice.

- Professional capabilities in social work practice settings
This module covers the four settings of social work; disability, adults at risk, mental health and child and family. It is focused on gaining familiarity with the process and delivery of social work services, with particular regard to safe-guarding and empowering service-users.

- Communication and collaborative working

- Limited systematic review dissertation
This module provides the opportunity to undertake a limited systematic review into a contemporary and novel topic of choice with reference to the specific profession of social work. - Social work as a career
You will normally specialise in a certain group of society, such as children. Much of the work is around helping decide the level of support or protection required, responding to requests for help and working with other agencies and professionals for the best outcomes. Most opportunities are with local authorities, where salaries can vary substantially between regions - you are likely to earn more working in London. However there are also opportunities available at private care homes, charities and NHS Trusts.

A patient, non-judgemental mind-set is needed, with the ability to communicate effectively with a host of different people and gain their trust. The work demands a level of resilience and a genuine desire to help people, as some cases may be disturbing, and some people won't want your help.

- Career progression
On graduation you will be eligible to register as a Social Worker, with starting salaries ranging from £19,500-£25,000, with this possibly rising to £40,000 with experience and further responsibilities. (National Careers Service)

We have asked 50 professionals and experts to create their own case studies, based on their own experiences. Each one presents the conceptual framework of a company or a project and the solution generated to solve it. Case studies cover all building fields and are divided into two sectors, buildings and infrastructures.
You will be able to choose any case study, based on your professional interests.

THIRD MODULE: WORK IN YOUR OWN PROJECT - CREATE YOUR BIP OR BEP

After the first theory module, where ten BIM Dimensions are dissected, and the second practical module, applying concepts to real case studies, it is time for you to create your own case study and simulate the decision-making process.
This last 40-hour module is designed to help you to decide on your own needs while working with a personal advisor. There are two possibilities: to create a BIP or to create a BEP.

BIP is the set of specific actions necessary to successfully implement BIM both in public and private companies. We will help you to set your own BIP action plan for your organization.

BEP is the acronym for BIM Execution Plan, and it is the main protocol document for a BIM project. BEP can be used to create a financial proposal for the delivery of a building or infrastructure with all the necessary documentation. You can choose to execute this plan with one of your own existing projects.

This PCET course is popular with graduates whose degree subjects are not widely taught in secondary school, such as sports science, health and social care, psychology and dance.

The part-time pre-service PCET is designed for professionals who want to share their knowledge and help others fulfil their potential, while combining study with work and family commitments.

Benefit from a minimum of 50 hours teaching practice per year in the learning and skills sector. This is a valuable opportunity to design, deliver, assess and evaluate teaching and learning, under the guidance of a mentor in your specialist subject area. Please note you will be expected to pay travel and subsistence costs relating to placements.

Contact time is four hours per week in an encouraging and productive learning environment.

Course overview

The course is popular with graduates from subjects that are not widely taught in secondary school, such as health and social care, psychology, sport science and dance.

This part-time pre-service PGCE PCET course is ideal for professionals who want to share their knowledge and teach young people and adults, while combining study with work and family commitments.

Explore theory in practice through a minimum of 50 hours teaching practice per year in the learning and skills sector. Benefit from the opportunity to design, deliver, assess and evaluate teaching and learning real-world classroom setting. Improve your teaching skills, reflect on your progress and learn under the guidance of a mentor in your specialist subject area. Please note you will be expected to pay travel and subsistence costs.

Teaching and assessment

Contact time is four hours per week in an encouraging and productive learning environment.

A team of highly experienced and research-active teachers and teacher-educators will help you develop your knowledge and refine your teacher practice. According to the Ofsted 2015 report “trainees benefit from highly qualified research leaders in further education who enable trainees to focus on academic rigour to improve the practice of teaching.”

We use a wide variety of teaching and learning methods which include interactive teaching, classroom seminars, tutorials, directed learning and group work and practical teaching workshops. Assessment methods include assignments, seminars, presentations and formative and summatively assessed observations of teaching.

This course is a route into teaching, which can be a rewarding career with excellent job security. According to the University and College Union (UCU), typical salary at advanced teacher and training level is £40,000.

Placements

- Construction Project
Our construction project managers look at financing a project, procuring construction work, financial management and the entire construction process.

Their work will take into account current construction technologies, energy efficiency solutions and environmental and sustainability issues. The project is very detailed and is carried out across site visits, analysing on-going construction projects and an appraisal of eco-technologies. These factors can be influenced by a construction's location so our field trips can take our students both overseas to expanding countries like Dubai or round the corner to building developments happening on our own campus.

- Market report and case study analysis
Students on our MSc Construction Project Management course can choose to study International Real Estate and Construction as an optional module. For this complex module students need to go on a study visit to an international city which has an emerging real estate and construction market.

Past students have gone abroad to take in either Dubai in the United Arab Emirates or Shanghai in the People's Republic of China. The field trip includes visits to real estate companies and construction firms, site visits and meetings with various professionals. From these briefings, students need to produce a country report that includes a detailed strategy including how they could break through in the real estate or construction market in these overseas destinations.

How would you manage without telephones, an IT system or an internet connection? All of these systems and many more are designed by building services engineers. Building Service Engineers turn buildings from empty shells into spaces fit for people to use.

From the very start of the building design, Building Services Engineers are involved helping architects and other members of the design team to get the size, shape and configuration of the building right. They determine strategies for designing energy efficient buildings, making them sustainable in the long term. Buildings are responsible for a large chunk of carbon emissions so this work makes a critical contribution to reducing a building's impact on climate change.

Of all the disciplines working in the built environment today, the building services engineer has the broadest reach and the deepest impact, affecting virtually every aspect of building design. In short, they make buildings work.

This Masters course provides a broad basis of advanced understanding in the technological areas of building services and energy engineering, with particular emphasis on those areas that are relevant to the interaction between the built and natural environments, modern industry, and the analysis of developing technologies.

Modules

The course provides a practitioner perspective with which we analyse building energy requirements in terms of the external environment and internal space, and the effect on energy resources. We consider the principles and analyse associated building engineering systems to understand control, simulation and modelling techniques.

As well as the core engineering skills, appropriate areas of management and research methods are studied to provide a balance foundation for the specialist units. The MSc dissertation provides an opportunity to develop further research skills by application to problems that require in-depth and innovative thinking.

- Thermal environment, acoustics and lighting
The module provides an introduction to the processes and characteristics that determine the quality of the internal built thermal, acoustic and visual environment. The aims of this module are to examine the principal parameters that affect the thermal, acoustic and visual environment, and the theory and principles necessary for the design of the internal environment.

- Heating and energy in buildings
This module introduces the key components of building heating and cooling systems, and presents sizing methodologies of central plant and techniques for analysing energy consumption and carbon emissions. System configurations and controls are discussed that ensure optimum safe and efficient operation of the plant.

- Energy resource and use analysis
This module offers the opportunity to develop strategic and operational management skills in the fields of infrastructure asset management and project appraisal. It covers design life extensions, risk and asset management techniques for infrastructure, and techniques for physical appraisal of infrastructure, and their economic, environmental and social impacts.

- Electrical power
The module covers electrical power engineering as applied to the design of systems in buildings. In particular, this includes the connection of, and the effects of, small-scale embedded generation as might be employed to exploit renewable energy sources. The module aims to provide an appreciation and understanding of electrical services design in buildings with particular reference to safety requirements and the effects of embedded generation on the supplier and the consumer.

- Sustainable refrigeration
The module introduces the principles of thermodynamics, and applies them to the study and design of energy efficient refrigeration systems. Vapour compression, absorption and other novel cycles are analysed and modeled. Practical applications of sustainable refrigeration are investigated through case studies.

- Ventilation and air conditioning
This module introduces the theory and principles necessary for the evaluation of ventilation and cooling loads, the selection and design of ventilating and air conditioning systems. It examines the principles of operation and characteristics of contemporary systems and their associated controls and distribution systems with particular emphasis on energy use and heat recovery. It discusses the effect of system balancing and maintenance on the correct and energy efficient operation of the systems.

Professional accreditation

The course is fully accredited by Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) and the Energy Institute as meeting the requirements for Further Learning for a Chartered Engineer (CEng) for candidates who have already acquired an Accredited CEng (Partial) undergraduate degree. Potential students are advised to check directly with the CIBSE or EI as to the validity of their first degree for a CEng route.

Accredited on behalf of the Engineering Council as meeting the requirements for Further Learning for registration as a Chartered Engineer. Candidates must hold a CEng accredited BEng/BSc (Hons) undergraduate first degree to comply with full CEng registration requirements.
