As we head towards zero carbon buildings, we need to better understand how buildings should be constructed and the materials we should use in their construction in order to increase their energy efficiency.

Whether you are working in the construction industry, a graduate from a built environment background or you want to upskill for a new construction role, we will teach you how to analyse the performance of existing buildings and to design and model new, energy efficient buildings.

This track of the Master of Science in Building and Architectural Engineers trains Building Engineers that can manage the complexity of building projects, through the application of engineering principles and tools to building design and construction. The programme
focuses on sustainability, energy efficiency and safety issues in the building sector, considering both horizontal (interdisciplinary) and vertical (life cycle-related) integration.
The Building Engineer is a professional with robust scientific and technical skills ready to:

Professional ‘Building Services Engineers’ design all of the systems that are necessary in a building for occupants to carry out their business. Services have to be carefully designed and installed so that they are unobtrusive and aesthetically pleasing, and also work in harmony with the architecture of the building. This element provides a broad introduction to the principles of energy conversion and thermodynamic machines and demonstrates their application to energy conversion and management in buildings. Emphasis is placed on refrigeration plant, energy conversion plant and energy management.
Refrigeration covers the basic principles and components of vapour compression systems, heat pumps and absorption systems.
Energy Conversion considers power cycles, combined heat and power, combustion processes, boiler plant, thermal energy storage and environmental impacts of plant operation.

Theme B - Renewable

Renewable Energy Technologies
This element includes: energy sources, economics and environmental impact, energy storage technologies, the role of renewables, solar thermal, solar electricity, wind power generation, hydro, tidal and wave power, biofuels, building integrated renewables.

The Building Surveying programme is for those involved in the maintenance, refurbishment, alteration and extension of existing buildings, or in project management and design for public bodies, commercial organisations and professional practice firms.

This programme is accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). By studying a combination of core and optional modules the course provides the skills required by the practicing building surveyor, and to equip you for both the profession and industry. In order to complete the MSc stage, you are required to take a Research Methods unit and undertake a dissertation on a topic approved by your supervisor.

Surveying project

Our surveyors look at financing a project, procuring construction work, financial management and the entire construction process. We want our students to have 'real world' experiences while studying at LSBU, of field work is a major component. We create these situations by inviting guest speaks in to give up-to-date lectures, having great industry links and taking our students into situations where they would like to work. Most of our surveying and construction courses give our students the opportunity to carry out a construction project. Their work will take into account current construction technologies, energy efficiency solutions and environmental and sustainability issues. The project is very detailed and is carried out across site visits, analysing on-going construction projects and an appraisal of eco-technologies. These factors can be influenced by a construction's location so our field trips can take our students both overseas to expanding countries like Dubai or round the corner to building developments happening on our own campus.

Market report and case study analysis

Students on our MSc Surveying courses can choose to study International Real Estate & Construction as an optional. For this complex module students need to go on a study visit to an international city which has an emerging real estate and construction market.

Past students have gone abroad to take in either Dubai in the United Arab Emirates or Shanghai in the People's Republic of China. The field trip includes visits to real estate companies and construction firms, site visits and meetings with various professionals. From these briefings, students need to produce a country report that includes a detailed strategy including how they could break through in the real estate or construction market in these overseas destinations.

Modes of Study

1-Year Full-Time
The taught element of the course (September to April) includes seven modules; delivery will be by a combination of lectures, tutorials and group/seminar work. A further four months (May to September) is spent undertaking the dissertation.

3-to-5-Years Distance-Learning
The distance learning programme is designed to enable you to conduct most of your studies at home, in your own time and at your own pace.

There is no requirement to attend lectures at Brunel University and there is no set timetable of lectures, instead you follow a structured programme of self-study at home or at work. This gives you the freedom to arrange a work programme to suit yourself and you should usually allow about twelve hours each week for study.

There are set submission dates for assignments but we have tried to design the programme so that they are well-spaced, giving you the maximum flexibility in your study plans.

You can take between three and five years to complete the course. The average is three years, with students taking four modules in the first year, four modules in the second year and the dissertation in the third year. However, depending on your other commitments you can take longer up to a maximum of five years.

You are supplied with a study pack in the form of textbooks and CD-ROMs; you have assignments to submit and exams to sit each year.

This track of the Master of Science in Building and Architectural Engineering trains Architectural Engineers that can manage and take part in the integrated design process of complex construction projects. An interdisciplinary approach to design and construction, and the related teamwork, are widely recognized as the essential tools to deliver buildings with high performances, reliable sustainability credentials, and a balanced life cycle cost.
The Architectural Engineer is a professional ready to work in complex, multidisciplinary and multi-scalar projects. The programme trains students through two parallel approaches:
- Giving them the tools, from the fields of both engineering and architecture, to be
effective members of design teams;
- Involving them in integrated studios where they can apply the principles of
integrated design to specific projects.

If your aim is to become a chartered building services engineer we will give you the experience and knowledge - subject to accreditation approval from the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers - to achieve your goal. Whether you've graduated from our BSc (Hons) course, or already work in industry as an associate engineer, we will equip you with the ability to play a leading role in the design, installation and management of building services.

The digital age has revolutionised how engineers operate - gone are the days when you could work with calculators, paper and design chart. To meet the demands of this changing industry we've invested heavily in industry standard software to which you'll have access to develop your expertise.

Sustainability and the carbon reduction of buildings is a key issue internationally. We will teach you how to implement this outlook in your work, from energy usage on site, emissions control, and your knowledge of environmental science, to the latest systems and innovation in energy conservation.

We'll improve your technical engineering capabilities so that you can take responsibility for building services and mechanical installations. You'll also focus on areas such as project leadership and management, lighting design, heating, thermal comfort, air conditioning, cooling systems, acoustic comfort and electrical services.

By 2016 public sector projects over the value of £5,000,000 have to be BIM (Building Information Management) enabled and can no longer comprise of a paper based design - our course gives you the chance to keep pace with an evolving industry.

You'll have the opportunity to use building information modelling that includes packages such as Revit, Tekla and Vico, with a strong emphasis in design that meets environmental constraints.

You'll be taught by staff who are practicing engineers and who will give you a global stance on building services engineering, drawing international comparisons with systems and operational solutions from around the world.

Masters Final Project / Dissertation & Research Skills (60 Credits)
This is an opportunity to engage in research or advanced scholarship in a subject area that is appropriate to the course and of particular interest to you.

Project Management (20 Credits)
Examine the role of a project manager in the co-ordination of a range of professional skills required in the development and implementation of complex projects to satisfy client objectives.

Sustainable Buildings (20 Credits)
Extend and deepen your knowledge of building and system performance in resolution of carbon reduction and achieving long term sustainability. This focus relates to both the design of the building fabric, the operation of the building and its usage.

WBL - Developing Engineering Portfolios & Study Methods (20 Credits)
Based upon the Engineering Gateways work based tool kit you will be introduced to the requirements for an engineering pathway and uses work based tools and skills as a means of developing that approach.

Mohammad is responsible for the strategic leadership of the Faculty of Arts, Environment and Technology,having joined our University in June 2011 from the University of East London. A well published researcher, with over 50 refereed conference and Journal publications, his research profile includes many funded research programmes including JISC and EU FP7 projects. Mohammad’s first degree was in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. He then went on to complete a PhD in the 'Design, Development and Evaluation of Multimedia Based Learning Systems' at Kingston University. In 1989 he set up one of the UK's first multimedia PC companies, 'Systems 2000'.

The philosophy of the Building Information Management course reflects the increasingly digital, multi-disciplinary and integrated nature of project delivery, influenced by the demand from governments and clients for greater efficiencies on construction projects. These efficiencies can be gained from more accurate prototyping, simulation, costing, planning, design, production and operation, and will be an output of sound information management and data input to Building Information Modelling (BIM) software.

The unique nature of Westminster's Building Information Management MSc is the focus on 'Management', which will create professionals who are able to manage the whole construction process and the information associated with this. The course is accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB).

The future construction professional requires knowledge and understanding of building information management, as well as how an integrated project team will take a project from inception to completion. Collaborative working and co-ordinated information exchange will increase the efficiency of project delivery and asset performance, leading to better sustainability over the building lifecycle and a satisfied client. This building information management approach is a strategic view of integrated project delivery that encompasses both the demand side (client) and supply side (consultants, contractors and suppliers).

The Building Information Management MSc is mainly aimed at graduates who are already in construction-related employment and who aspire to senior positions in their field. The course aims to provide a challenging, stimulating and professionally relevant course of study which is directly related to the effective management of construction projects.

The course aims to offer learners flexible access to the core content, whilst still providing the discipline and structure of regular attendance at the University. Associated careers

This course is aimed at graduates who are, or have been, in construction-related employment who aspire to senior positions in the construction industry.

Enhancing students' employability and industry connections is a key aim of the course. In 2013 Westminster ran Project Intermission, in partnership with industry mentors DMA Architects, Studio Klaschka and Gardiner & Theobald. Students from various built environment disciplines worked collaboratively on a 'real' project for a 'real' client, with input from industry practitioners, using cutting-edge Building Information Modelling (BIM) technologies. From this project, construction student Kevin Hernandez secured a work placement with AECOM. Project Intermission was also shortlisted for a CIOB International Innovation and Research Award 2013.
