Databases: This module shows how to design a database and intelligently query a database using SQL; and provides an introductory level of understanding in database systems. The Integrated Building Systems Design and Operation MSc offers a thorough grounding in the science and engineering of integrated building systems. Drawing upon the world-leading research conducted in this field at The Bartlett’s Institute for Environmental Design and Engineering, and exploiting strong industry links, it provides students with the knowledge and skills to be able to excel in relevant industry roles or pursue research at the doctoral level.

About this degree

The programme is informed by the latest research and the evolving needs of the industry. You will learn about integrated building design, advanced modelling and simulation, energy management systems, and performance evaluation. You will develop the expertise to utilise hard-edged engineering methods and quantitative and qualitative tools to test and evolve your designs, integrating quantitative performance considerations.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

All students undertake an independent research project whch culminates in a 10,000-word dissertation.

Teaching and learning

The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars, tutorials, problem-based learning, hands-on laboratory sessions and project work. Assessment is through a combination of methods; written coursework, group work with a design component, individual and group-based project work, unseen examinations, and by dissertation.

Fieldwork

Students will have the opportunity to participate in a field trip in term one which will include a mix of workshops, seminars and team building activities. 

Students will have the opportunity to participate in site visits throughout the duration of the programme.

The costs of the field trip are covered by the department. Site visits that are within the Transport for London area and which are optional may incur additional transport costs.

This course covers the planning, design, analysis and management frameworks of infrastructure systems. In particular, you will develop expertise in the:

  • Technical aspects of infrastructure engineering within a social, economic, environmental and political context
  • Factors that affect and drive infrastructure planning and funding
  • Interdependent nature of infrastructure across different sectors

You will qualify with a sound understanding of the whole life-cycle of infrastructure assets, the environmental impact of infrastructure projects, and formal asset-management techniques enabling you to maximise the benefits of infrastructure assets in the future.

The lectures given by our academic staff are complemented by visiting speakers from different infrastructure companies such as Network Rail, Thames Water, Environment Agency, Transport for London, ARUP, KPMG, etc., covering different aspect of infrastructure engineering and management. During the academic year, infrastructure specialists carry out Keynote Lectures focusing on important infrastructure projects and approaches. Past Keynote Speakers include Sir John Armitt, Sir Terry Morgan, Sir Michael Pitt, Sir David Higgins, Keith Clarke, James Stewart, Andrew Wolstenholme, Michele Dix, Humphrey Cadoux-Hudson. A number of field visits are also organised to provide an overview of real-life infrastructure operation and management. Past field visits have taken place to both the National Grid and Network Rail Control Centers.

Graduates from the programme are highly employable but have the potential to progress to relevant specialist PhD or EngD research programmes in the field.

Modules related to the different groups are taught by a total of 20 full or part-time members of academic staff, as well as a number of visiting lecturers from the industry and government.

In addition to the University Library and Learning Centre’s extensive resources, our excellent testing facilities can support experimentally based MSc dissertation projects.

  • The state-of-the-art of infrastructure engineering and management that is required for the realisation of the complex delivery of new and management and of existing infrastructure.

They determine strategies for designing energy efficient buildings, making them sustainable in the long term. Buildings are responsible for a large chunk of carbon emissions so this work makes a critical contribution to reducing a building's impact on climate change.

Of all the disciplines working in the built environment today, the building services engineer has the broadest reach and the deepest impact, affecting virtually every aspect of building design. In short, they make buildings work.

This Masters course provides a broad basis of advanced understanding in the technological areas of building services and energy engineering, with particular emphasis on those areas that are relevant to the interaction between the built and natural environments, modern industry, and the analysis of developing technologies.

The MSc in Construction Economics and Management equips graduates with the skills to become senior managers, policy advisers and decision-makers in any branch of the construction industry. It can also provide teachers and researchers in these subject areas with professional academic development.

About this degree

This RICS accredited programme aims to develop students' knowledge and skills under two mutually supporting themes, for which the School of Construction & Project Management has an international reputation:

  • the economics and finance of construction at project, firm and industry levels
  • the management of construction projects and enterprises.

Construction is taken in its widest sense to include design, infrastructure and the supply chain.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of four core modules (60 credits), four optional/elective modules (60 credits) and a dissertation (60 credits).

A Postgraduate Diploma, four core modules, four optional modules (120 credits, full-time nine months) is offered.

Dissertation/report

All MSc students submit a 10,000-word dissertation related to the main themes of the programme, under the guidance of an individual supervisor.

Teaching and learning

The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars and group work on case studies, exercises and problems. Lectures include industry guest speakers. Assessment is through written examination, term papers and the dissertation.

The career options for graduates are varied, and many students go on to work for construction, engineering and design enterprises, professional consultants and commercial research organisations, and client enterprises with significant project portfolios such as retailers or banks. Employability

The programme offers an understanding of financial and other kinds of management within the context of the project, the project-based firm and the construction industry in its widest sense. There are some elements which can be put to use straight away while other elements of a strategic nature will prove useful as graduates move into more senior management roles. It is an attractive graduate qualification either for those trained in a technical discipline without previous economic training or those trained in economics or finance without previous exposure to construction.

There’s a focus on the global business environment, an emphasis on managing international organisations, and special attention on the cultural challenges of extending operations across multiple countries. In the second year of this course you’ll undertake an internship or further consultancy project. This advanced practice will enhance your skills and employability.

Teaching And Assessment

Your tutors will use a variety of teaching methods including lectures, seminars, workshops and tutorials. As this is a master’s course there is a major element of independent learning and self-motivated reflection.

During the second year you’ll undertake an internship or consultancy project for a whole semester. You’ll follow this up with an Applied Management Work Investigation Report that will critically analyse an issue related to your practical experience.

Learning Environment

The Business Clinic enables our students to participate in a ‘consultancy firm’ to provide advice for our region’s businesses on issues that include finance and investment.

Research-Rich Learning

As a master’s student you’ll develop your research skills to a new and higher level. Your research supervisor will help you submit a proposal for your master’s dissertation or consultancy project and then discuss its development through to completion in the final semester.

If you decide on a master’s consultancy project, rather than a dissertation, you’ll still undertake primary and desk research. Through your reading, reflection and research, you’ll be expected to show a deep understanding of the issues that are involved in the client brief.

Throughout your course you’ll be an active participant in the on-going research agenda that’s at the heart of Newcastle Business School. With conferences and research events regularly taking place, and with staff discussing their own research as it relates to the topics you’ll study, there’s a strong emphasis on engaging in up-to-date enquiry-based learning.

Overall the course aims to develop you as a leader and manager, with a clear understanding of the theory and practice of global business, and how to overcome the challenges faced by managers of international businesses.

As part of this, the course includes two modules that are focused on developing global management competencies. Topics during these modules include emotional intelligence, cultural awareness and the ability to work in diverse groups and teams, as well as project management and decision making.

A further module, ‘Academic and Professional Development’, has a specific focus on self-development. It includes formal sessions with our Careers and Employment Service which offers a range of workshops, one-to-one advice, and networking opportunities.

In the second year of the course you’ll be gaining workplace experience and putting your new learning into practice. You’ll develop a track record of achievement that will help you stand out from other job applicants. We’ll help you find an internship / project that matches your interests and career aspirations, building on Newcastle Business School’s very successful background in placing students.

A master’s course that takes two years, instead of just one, will carry particular weight with employers. They’ll understand that you’ll have a deeper understanding of topics as well as more hands-on practical experience.

Your Future

Our graduates typically go into graduate positions with multinational companies or smaller businesses with operations and supply chains in several countries. A number of graduates have gone on to work in their family business.

Some employers require completion of a two-year master’s degree and this course will meet their requirement.

If you decide to start up your own business, it’s good to know that the combined turnover of our graduates’ start-up companies is higher than that of any other UK university.

The course could also lead you to a postgraduate research degree such as an MPhil, PhD and Professional Doctorate.

Whatever you decide to do, you will have the transferable skills that employers expect from a master’s graduate from Northumbria University. Our focus is wide, but targeted, and touches on many aspects of building better places and spaces, from design and construction through to operation and maintenance.

About this degree

The digital realm offers solutions to some of society's biggest problems - but there is often a knowledge gap that prevents its power from being harnessed.
