This track of the Master of Science in Building and Architectural Engineers trains Building Engineers that can manage the complexity of building projects, through the application of engineering principles and tools to building design and construction. The programme
focuses on sustainability, energy efficiency and safety issues in the building sector, considering both horizontal (interdisciplinary) and vertical (life cycle-related) integration.
The Building Engineer is a professional with robust scientific and technical skills ready to:
• engineer the architectural design of complex, large and/or special buildings;
• supervise the design integration of all technological and technical parts (building fabric, structure, building systems);
• manage the whole manufacturing and life cycle of building systems and components;
• organize and control the construction and maintenance process.

How would you manage without telephones, an IT system or an internet connection? All of these systems and many more are designed by building services engineers. Building Service Engineers turn buildings from empty shells into spaces fit for people to use.

From the very start of the building design, Building Services Engineers are involved helping architects and other members of the design team to get the size, shape and configuration of the building right. They determine strategies for designing energy efficient buildings, making them sustainable in the long term. Buildings are responsible for a large chunk of carbon emissions so this work makes a critical contribution to reducing a building's impact on climate change.

Modules

The course provides a practitioner perspective with which we analyse building energy requirements in terms of the external environment and internal space, and the effect on energy resources. We consider the principles and analyse associated building engineering systems to understand control, simulation and modelling techniques.

As well as the core engineering skills, appropriate areas of management and research methods are studied to provide a balance foundation for the specialist units. The MSc dissertation provides an opportunity to develop further research skills by application to problems that require in-depth and innovative thinking.

Module descriptions

- Thermal environment, acoustics and lighting
The module provides an introduction to the processes and characteristics that determine the quality of the internal built thermal, acoustic and visual environment. The aims of this module are to examine the principal parameters that affect the thermal, acoustic and visual environment, and the theory and principles necessary for the design of the internal environment.

- Heating and energy in buildings
This module introduces the key components of building heating and cooling systems, and presents sizing methodologies of central plant and techniques for analysing energy consumption and carbon emissions. System configurations and controls are discussed that ensure optimum safe and efficient operation of the plant.

- Energy resource and use analysis
This module offers the opportunity to develop strategic and operational management skills in the fields of infrastructure asset management and project appraisal. It covers design life extensions, risk and asset management techniques for infrastructure, and techniques for physical appraisal of infrastructure, and their economic, environmental and social impacts.

- Electrical power
The module covers electrical power engineering as applied to the design of systems in buildings. In particular, this includes the connection of, and the effects of, small-scale embedded generation as might be employed to exploit renewable energy sources. The module aims to provide an appreciation and understanding of electrical services design in buildings with particular reference to safety requirements and the effects of embedded generation on the supplier and the consumer.

- Sustainable refrigeration
The module introduces the principles of thermodynamics, and applies them to the study and design of energy efficient refrigeration systems. Vapour compression, absorption and other novel cycles are analysed and modeled. Practical applications of sustainable refrigeration are investigated through case studies.

- Ventilation and air conditioning
This module introduces the theory and principles necessary for the evaluation of ventilation and cooling loads, the selection and design of ventilating and air conditioning systems. It examines the principles of operation and characteristics of contemporary systems and their associated controls and distribution systems with particular emphasis on energy use and heat recovery. It discusses the effect of system balancing and maintenance on the correct and energy efficient operation of the systems.

Potential students are advised to check directly with the CIBSE or EI as to the validity of their first degree for a CEng route.

This postgraduate Building Surveying course is an innovative course for graduates who wish to follow an accredited route towards qualification as a Chartered Building Surveyor and/or Chartered Building Engineer. You can achieve this by completing the Graduate Diploma then continuing onto a full Masters by completing the dissertation, or directly enter at Masters level (please see 'Entry Requirements' for more information). Both qualifications are fully accredited as postgraduate route ways to the desired chartered status.

UWE Bristol developed both course routes through extensive consultation with local and national employers, to offer a comprehensive programme of study. Our links with the profession, locally and nationally, help us maintain a high employability record.

Course detail

The course's teaching staff includes Chartered Building Surveyors with many years' experience, and we have input from part-time visiting practitioners and speakers. The course also draws upon the research and consultancy carried out in the department.

You will have access to a coherent programme of study in building surveying, underpinned by staff research and consultancy that reflects and answers the needs of professional practice. You will be able to become an effective member of a building surveying team within a relatively short period.

We encourage you to examine the link between theoretical concepts, research outputs and the practice of building surveying, while developing your academic skills within a professionally defined framework. You will also develop an excellent understanding of the multi-disciplinary and multi-professional nature of building surveying.

For the Graduate Diploma you will study the following Level 2 and 3 modules over one year full-time, or over two years part-time by day-release. Upon completion of these you will then progress to the M level modules.

Assessment is through a balance of coursework and examinations. Examinations are held in either January or May/June. Coursework comprises a variety of essays, reports, surveys, design projects, teamwork and progress tests.

We encourage you to undertake 'formative work' to prepare for assessment. This will not count towards your module marks, but the feedback you receive will help you improve your performance.

Our surveyors look at financing a project, procuring construction work, financial management and the entire construction process. We want our students to have 'real world' experiences while studying at LSBU, of field work is a major component. We create these situations by inviting guest speaks in to give up-to-date lectures, having great industry links and taking our students into situations where they would like to work. Most of our surveying and construction courses give our students the opportunity to carry out a construction project. Their work will take into account current construction technologies, energy efficiency solutions and environmental and sustainability issues. The project is very detailed and is carried out across site visits, analysing on-going construction projects and an appraisal of eco-technologies. These factors can be influenced by a construction's location so our field trips can take our students both overseas to expanding countries like Dubai or round the corner to building developments happening on our own campus.

- Market report and case study analysis
Students on our MSc Surveying courses can choose to study International Real Estate & Construction as an optional. For this complex module students need to go on a study visit to an international city which has an emerging real estate and construction market.

Past students have gone abroad to take in either Dubai in the United Arab Emirates or Shanghai in the People's Republic of China. The field trip includes visits to real estate companies and construction firms, site visits and meetings with various professionals. From these briefings, students need to produce a country report that includes a detailed strategy including how they could break through in the real estate or construction market in these overseas destinations

The course is also suitable if you are a professional working in a property or surveying role and want to improve your skills and career prospects in residential and commercial building surveying, property management or building control.

Building surveying is an expanding professional discipline involved with new development and the inspection, maintenance and refurbishment of existing buildings. The course includes practical laboratory and project work to improve your career prospects in the public and commercial sectors throughout the UK and overseas.

The course includes practical, client-focused property projects. These involve you completing technical and professional tasks and applying creative solutions that draw on your developing knowledge. On of our key teaching resources is a University-owned Georgian terraced house. This is used for practical teaching sessions both in pathology and structural principles. Work placement scheme

Kingston University has set up a scheme that allows postgraduate students in the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Computing to include a work placement element in their course starting from September 2017. The placement scheme is available for both international and home/EU students.

-The work placement takes place after postgraduate students have successfully completed the taught portion of their degree.
-The responsibility for finding the placement is with the student. We cannot guarantee the placement, just the opportunity to undertake it.

THIRD MODULE: WORK IN YOUR OWN PROJECT - CREATE YOUR BIP OR BEP

After the first theory module, where ten BIM Dimensions are dissected, and the second practical module, applying concepts to real case studies, it is time for you to create your own case study and simulate the decision-making process.
This last 40-hour module is designed to help you to decide on your own needs while working with a personal advisor. There are two possibilities: to create a BIP or to create a BEP.

BIP is the set of specific actions necessary to successfully implement BIM both in public and private companies. We will help you to set your own BIP action plan for your organization.

BEP is the acronym for BIM Execution Plan, and it is the main protocol document for a BIM project. BEP can be used to create a financial proposal for the delivery of a building or infrastructure with all the necessary documentation. You can choose to execute this plan with one of your own existing projects.

Facilities

All masters students have access to our excellent laboratory facilities which include equipment for field sampling and analysis of water and wastewater, and some of the largest hydraulics equipment in the UK. There are three dedicated water laboratory staff available to help you use our equipment who are specialists in pollutant analysis, hydraulics and running continuous trials.

Practical training includes:
- Hand-pump maintenance using the largest single site collection of hand-pumps;
- latrine slab construction;
- flow measurements; and
- water quality sampling and analysis.

WEDC has a unique sector Resource Centre with a dedicated and skilled information officer. Over 19,000 items can be searched on a customized database allowing ready access to this collection of books, series, country files, student projects, videos, journals, maps, and manufacturers' catalogues.

The Resource Centre also provides a dedicated quiet study space for WEDC students. Many items including all WEDC publications and over 2500 papers presented at 37 WEDC International Conferences are available in the open access sector knowledge base.

How you will learn

The programme comprises both compulsory core modules and optional modules which may be selected. A group case study module draws together material from across the programme and develops team working skills. The individual research project and dissertation (frequently linked to specific needs of an agency) of between 75 and 150 pages in length concludes the programme. To support your learning you will have access to our comprehensive facilities including laboratories, hand-pumps, and a dedicated Resource Centre.

- Assessment
For most modules, students are assessed by one item of coursework (two items for foundation modules) and an in-class test. The Group Project module is assessed on the basis of written documents and spoken presentations, including an individual component for the module mark. The individual Research Dissertation is assessed on the basis of a written dissertation, and this module includes an oral when a student discusses their submitted dissertation with their supervisor and a second member of academic staff.

Careers and further study

Many WEDC students and alumni work for international NGOs (MSF, Oxfam, SCF, GOAL, WaterAid, etc.) and agencies (such as UNICEF), or National Governments. Graduate job titles include Sanitation Technical
Manager, Water and Sanitation Consultant, Project Manager, Technical Adviser, Environmental Engineering Consultant and Civil Engineering Specialist.

Scholarships and bursaries

Bursaries are available for self-funding international students.
The University also offers over 100 scholarships each year to new self-financing full-time international students who are permanently resident in a county outside the European Union. These Scholarships are to the value of 25% of the programme tuition fee and that value will be credited to the student’s tuition fee account.

Currently, our suite of Masters programmes seeks to draw upon our cutting edge research and broad base knowledge of within the areas of contemporary construction management, project management, infrastructure management, building engineering, building modelling, building energy demand and waste and water engineering. The programmes are designed to respond to contemporary issues in the field such as sustainable construction, low carbon building, low energy services, project complexity, socio-technical systems and socio-economic concerns.

- Research
Drawing from our excellent record in attracting research funds (currently standing at over £19M), the focal point of the School is innovative, industry-relevant research. This continues to nurture and refresh our long history of working closely with industrial partners on novel collaborative research and informs our ongoing innovative teaching and extensive enterprise activities. This is further complemented by our outstanding record of doctoral supervision which has provided, on average, a PhD graduate from the School every two weeks.

- Career Prospects
Independent surveys continue to show that industry has the highest regard for our graduates. Over 90% were in employment and/or further study six months after graduating. Recent independent surveys of major employers have also consistently rated the School at the top nationally for civil engineering and construction graduates.
