Introduction

This is a new, innovative program to educate students from a wide range of backgrounds (from basic scientists to all levels of healthcare professionals) to interpret and understand genomic data that increasingly impacts on service delivery to patients and the community. The programme is flexible and modular and includes full- and part-time MSc options, delivered over one or two years respectively. There are also full-time and part-time Postgraduate Certificate (PG Cert) or Postgraduate Diploma (PG Dip) options. In addition, students can select individual modules to study as a short course for CPPD purposes. Our aim is to enhance knowledge and skills in this rapidly evolving, expanding and clinically relevant field by providing a flexible, multi-disciplinary and multi-professional perspective in genomics applied to clinical practice and medical research.

Course Structure

The MSc programme also includes a core research module with opportunities to access the emerging data from the 100,000 Genomes Project through the Genomics England Clinical Interpretation Partnership (GeCIP) training domains. The programme is one of the preferred providers for Health Education England and our course values and upholds the NHS Constitution.

The programme includes collaborations with the Institute for Cancer Research, Buckinghamshire New University and Brunel University London.

The course is flexible and modular and is available as a full- or part-time MSc, delivered over one or two years respectively. There are also full-time and part-time Postgraduate Certificate (PG Cert) and Postgraduate Diploma (PG Dip) options.

Full-time students should register for the qualification they wish to exit with, either PG Cert, PG Dip or the MSc. Part-time students should register for the PG Cert in the first instance and may progress to the other awards should they so wish.

HEE funding

Applicants who are funded by HEE will have their fees paid in full. To be eligible for HEE funding, you must be an NHS healthcare professional working in England, with the support of your employing institution. More about this course

We will be enhancing knowledge of genomic science from a health perspective. With our superb laboratory facilities we’re able to offer unique research project opportunities together with outstanding quality of teaching from research active staff.

We have access to guest lecturers at the highest levels of their profession who are collaborating with our staff (Barts, Imperial, Kings, UCL, St Georges, Brunel). In addition, we have a strong collaboration with the prestigious ACFIES in Columbia, which offers exciting international work exchange opportunities.
Students will be eligible to join the Royal Society of Biology with whom we are registering to be accredited.

We can offer unrivalled student learning support and our location means that the job market is on our doorstep. Connections with other prestigious universities mean that students will have the opportunity to meet and discuss their career options and secure work placements or apply for studentships.

You’ll be tested using a wide variety of assessment tools. We will ask students to write laboratory reports, give presentations, sit written exams, take part in debates, answer quizzes and experience virtual labs via asynchronous e-learning, make posters and defend their work aurally.

After the course

Genomics is important in both public and private domains. It is key for the NHS and via governmental initiatives (the 100,000 genome project). Thus there is a commensurate burgeoning of new genome centres in the UK and abroad: ie the Cambridge Genome centre. There are opportunities for people with degrees and training in human genetics. As genetic testing becomes part of many routine medical evaluations, more geneticists are needed to perform the tests. As genetics is recognised to be a basic part of all biological sciences, more teachers with expertise in genetics will also be needed. In India, genomics is growing through companies like Medgenome. It is indubitable that this is a currently growing area of the job market.

This course is an excellent route to a wide range of career opportunities. Estimating transport needs, providing systems and infrastructure to meet those needs, and addressing the impacts of transport on society and the environment all require the understanding and skills this course offers. The module content draws on our strong industry links, our research and our local and national project-based work.

MSc Transport Engineering and Planning is run by UWE Bristol's Centre for Transport and Society. All the teaching staff are engaged in research and consultancy, and often advise national and local government.

Key benefits

This degree is accredited as meeting the requirements for Further Learning for a Chartered Engineer (CEng) for candidates who have already acquired a partial CEng accredited undergraduate first degree.

Bristol is the home of Isambard Kingdom Brunel, and an exciting place to study transport and engineering. The city has some interesting and complex transport problems of its own, and plans to tackle them include a bus rapid transit network, continuing developments to cycling networks as the country's first Cycling City, and experimental closures of the city centre to motor traffic on Sundays. Our close links with local authorities in the area means we were commissioned to evaluate Bristol's Local Sustainable Transport Fund project.

Why do most Park and Ride schemes cause an increase in traffic? Why do people living in high-density housing make fewer journeys than people in suburbs, yet cause more traffic congestion? Does an increase in traffic inevitably increase collision and injury rates? These are just some of the questions posed by our researchers in the Centre for Transport and Society at UWE Bristol.

This course draws on the latest research and practice, and attracts students from a wide range of countries, and from employers around the region. We welcome applicants from all over the world.

We use a variety of teaching methods, including lectures, seminars, workshops, fieldwork and laboratory work, debates and discussion, teamwork, presentations and external visits. Teaching staff are mainly active researchers in the Centre for Transport and Society, but, where appropriate, we include contribution from UWE Bristol experts working and teaching in other related fields.

We also have guest lectures from professional practitioners, who give you valuable insights into the latest developments in practice.

Transport engineers must be numerate. If you lack confidence in this area, we can provide help for the mathematical content of the course.

Placements

A feature of this course is the potential for a work placement. This gives you the chance to gain valuable experience in practice and gain a competitive edge over graduates from other courses. If you choose to, we will help you find a suitable placement with an employer based in the area, for a few weeks in the summer after the end of teaching and assessment. The placement (which may be unpaid) will involve a project designed to address an employer's genuine needs. Your experience and findings will contribute to your project-based dissertation.

Assessment

Assessment is mainly through coursework, presentations, and exams.

Careers / Further study

Opportunities in transport engineering and planning are growing. UWE Bristol's transport graduates have an excellent reputation in the marketplace, and several have since secured senior positions around the region and further afield.

Every year, employers ask the programme leader to circulate details of vacancies with them. Several of our students have been hired as a direct result by employers such as Arup, Halcrow, ITP, WSP, Matrix, Parsons Brinkerhoff and Bristol City Council.
