The Postgraduate Diploma in Law (PGDip)/Common Professional Examination (CPE) is a conversion programme enabling graduates in any non-law subject to convert to a career in law. You can take the course at the end of your degree or use it as a bridge from one graduate career to another.

The course provides you with a sound knowledge of:
- the English legal system and process
- those areas of law considered to be fundamental (the seven 'foundations of legal knowledge')
- at least one other area of legal study as a project - you will choose the topic.

You will develop practical skills in legal research, problem-solving, critical analysis and communication. Classes are taught in small groups of exclusively postgraduate law students by enthusiastic, expert lecturers, who are committed to research and teaching excellence.

Brighton Business School has strong links with the local legal profession. You will benefit from guest lectures by local practitioners and judges, as well as sponsorship and placement opportunities. On successful completion of the Common Professional Examination (CPE), you will be awarded a postgraduate diploma in Law. We realise that careful career planning is crucial from the outset of your course, especially for students who wish to practise as a lawyer, where competition can be fierce. You will be able to attend workshops on qualifying as a lawyer and we hold an annual legal careers forum.

Students who aspire to qualify as lawyers are encouraged to undertake short law-related work shadowing placements during vacation periods, in solicitors firms and the Crown Prosecution Service, mini-pupillages in barristers chambers, and internships with judges. All students have access to the range of services offered by the Careers Service, including individual counselling sessions, CV checking, and mock interviews.

Our simulated magistrates court project provides you with the opportunity to examine and cross-examine trainee police officers about real cases before local magistrates in an authentic court room environment. We run workshops in mooting and advocacy skills, and you will have the opportunity to take part in national mooting competitions.

Course content:

The part-time course is based on an average study commitment of 20 hours per week, 15 hours per week of which is private study. The programme begins in September with a module on the English legal system, method and skills. This provides participants with the foundation needed to underpin their legal studies.

The seven modules which cover the 'Foundations of Legal Knowledge' are taught through a combination of lectures, seminars and workshops. All the teaching is scheduled into blocks of 3 hours. Assessment is by means of coursework and/or examination.

Course in brief

This course will suit you if you are a sport and exercise graduate, a graduate from a related science or a medical student looking to specialise in the field of sport physiology. It is designed to focus on professional skills that improve your employability, as you learn with state-of-the-art equipment including environmental chambers, breath-by-breath analysers, blood sampling analysers and transcranial magnetic stimulation devices.

You also again gain real-world experience in areas relevant to your interests by working alongside experienced practitioners. Past projects have included the design of individualised training programmes leading up to the Brighton Marathon and the physiological testing of elite athletes. Our teaching laboratories are accredited by the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES), as are most of our course staff. You can register on the BASES Supervised Experience Scheme yourself to achieve personal accreditation.

Course structure

The course is flexible in that it allows you to exit with a postgraduate certificate at the end of one semester (three 20-credit modules) or a postgraduate diploma at the end of two semesters (six 20-credit modules). You must complete the 60-credit research project to qualify for the MSc.

You spend around 100 hours of the course with an organisation related to the practice of physiology, which will allow you to apply your academic knowledge in a vocational setting. Previous students have worked with organisations including Brighton and Hove Albion Football Club and the English Institute of Sport. You can also visit the Paris based Institute Nationale du Sport, de l'Expertise et de la Performance (INSEP), working with elite coaches, scientists, medical staff and athletes from many different fields of sport.

Many students have commenced their professional careers with the organisation that provided them with work experience.

Areas of study

In taught physiology modules, you'll experience and discuss the responses of the human body to various stimuli, including effect of environmental changes (heat and hypoxic chambers) and of ergogenic aids which can be used to simulate peculiar clinical conditions and help students understand better exercise tolerance. This novel approach to teaching integrative physiology will help you to develop a host of laboratory skills. You will be introduced to the latest in the research field of exercise physiology and will have an opportunity to write your own paper from your research project.

With modules such as Professional Enquiry, you'll also gain vocational skills to give you a competitive edge in the job market; through placement opportunities and chances to network in the world of sports physiology, you'll graduate with a foot firmly in the industry.

Our facilities include an x-m square Gym over two floors with state-of-the-art fitness equipment including a three-camera system to analyse weight-lifting actions and an isokinetic dynamometer to allow measurement of muscle strength. Our sport and exercise laboratories which are all accredited by the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES) and include:
- A Molecular genetics laboratory with biobanking
- A biomechanics laboratory with motion analysis equipment, various EMG systems, an immersive screen
- Two exercise physiology laboratories where aerobic / anaerobic endurance, power and strength assessments as well as body composition, cardiac and pulmonary screening can be carried out
- An Environmental Laboratory with purpose-built environment chamber where we can simulate different climates by controlling the temperature (-20 to +50°C) and relative humidity (20 to 95 per cent), and a 1.13m x 1.13m x 1.5 m water immersion tank
- A research-based laboratory with an oxygen-controlled chamber to simulate altitude (hypoxia)
- A biochemistry laboratory where we can analyse blood and tissue samples.

This course will suit you if you are a sport and exercise graduate, a graduate from a related science or a medical student looking to specialise in the field of exercise physiology.

It is designed to focus on professional skills that improve your employability, as you learn with state-of-the-art equipment including environmental chambers, breath-by-breath analysers, blood sampling analysers and transcranial magnetic stimulation devices.

You also again gain real-world experience in areas relevant to your interests by working alongside experienced practitioners. Past projects have included working with participants in our cardiac rehabilitation programme.

Our teaching laboratories are accredited by the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES), as are most of our course staff. You can register on the BASES Supervised Experience Scheme yourself to achieve personal accreditation.

Course structure

The course is flexible in that it allows you to exit with a postgraduate certificate at the end of one semester (three 20-credit modules) or a postgraduate diploma at the end of two semesters (six 20-credit modules). You must complete the 60-credit research project to qualify for the MSc.

You spend around 100 hours of the course with an organisation related to the practice of physiology, which will allow you to apply your academic knowledge in a vocational setting. Previous students have worked in organisations including a cardiac rehabilitation programme and fall prevention classes with Albion in the Community.Many students have started their professional careers with the organisation that provided them with work experience.

Areas of study

In taught physiology modules, you'll experience and discuss the responses of the human body to various stimuli, including effect of environmental changes (heat and hypoxic chambers) and of ergogenic aids which can be used to simulate peculiar clinical conditions and help students understand better exercise tolerance. This novel approach to teaching integrative physiology will help you to develop a host of laboratory skills. You will be introduced to the latest in the research field of exercise physiology and will have an opportunity to write your own paper from your research project.

- A biomechanics laboratory with motion analysis equipment, various EMG systems, an immersive screen

About this course

The Further Education and Teaching PGCE provides a formal teaching qualification for people working, or wishing to work, in the further education sector. This could include a college of further education, a sixth form college or an organisation such as a private training company.

The programme has an excellent reputation and in 2007 we became the first post-compulsory teacher education provider in the country to be awarded an Ofsted Grade 1.

It comprises a partnership stretching across Sussex that includes full-time courses at the university and Northbrook College and part-time courses at City College Brighton, Sussex Downs College in Lewes and Eastbourne and Sussex Coast College in Hastings

If you already hold a degree, it is anticipated that you will graduate with a Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), and there may also be an opportunity to gain masters-level credits. Applicants without a first degree will graduate with a Certificate in Education.

Course structure

Students who opt for the part-time route must be working in the post-16 sector, and are normally expected to continue teaching for at least 50 hours per academic year for the duration of the course.

For the part-time in-service route you will be required to attend one half-day session per week during college term times, in addition to your regular teaching commitments. The full-time route is aimed at those who are not currently teaching and is a combination of taught sessions at the university and a teaching placement at an appropriate institution.

The full-time route is taught on our Falmer campus. The part-time route takes place at our partner colleges; Sussex Coast College Hastings, Sussex Downs College (Lewes and Eastbourne) and City College Brighton and Hove.

Areas of study

The programme is delivered through seven modules on generic teaching and learning issues relevant to the post-compulsory sector, and reflecting the key areas identified in the new standards. It is endorsed under the Equipping our Teachers regulations 2007 originally managed by the Standards Verification UK (SVUK) but now under the control of the Institute for Learning (IfL). The course is normally completed within two years. However, if you are unable to take all of the modules during this period then you can postpone individual elements and complete the course over a longer period of time.

If your circumstances change and it is not possible to complete the whole course, you can exit with a postgraduate certificate after completing one-third of the course or a postgraduate diploma after completing two-thirds of the course.

Each module explores a different aspect of functional management and leadership, and is examined by written assessment in the form of a work-based project.

Year 1:

Year 1 will provide you with a sound understanding of the impact of the external environment on organisations. It will help you develop analytical and critical capability, with specific reference to the public sector, and it will examine organisational behaviour and how to enhance effectiveness.

The second part of this year will examine issues relating to strategy formulation and implementation, with an aim of enhancing organisational performance. Issues include turn around strategies, quality and project management, and examining financial management such as costing and budgeting models as well as financial control systems.
