PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

Graduate students will find the programme of substantial use in developing their knowledge and skills base for bridge analysis, design and management.

The programme also offers the opportunity for practising bridge engineers to update their knowledge of current design and assessment codes and guidelines, become familiar with developments in new techniques for the design, construction and management of bridges.

The Bridge Engineering programme encompasses a wide range of modules addressing the whole life-analysis of bridge structures from design to end-of-life.

Optional modules from some of our other study streams are also offered, covering structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, water engineering, construction management, and infrastructure engineering and management.

Graduates are highly employable and may progress to relevant specialist PhD or EngD research programmes in the field.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

This programme is studied over either one year (full-time) or between two and five years (part-time or distance learning). It consists of eight taught modules and a dissertation project.

This is an established and popular modular course in fixed and removable prosthodontics and is suitable for dentists contemplating an academic career or to improve your clinical practice. You will develop enhanced skills and understanding of the scientific basis and practice of prosthodontics so that you become competent in the diagnosis and treatment of more complex problems.

This course will help you build upon the skills you earned in your dental undergraduate course and develop these skills in a clinical environment.

The staff teaching this course are experienced in diagnosis, treatment planning, rehabilitation and maintenance of the oral function in patients with a range of dental problems. You will receive close supervision and support when treating patients throughout the course. All clinical facilities, equipment and materials are provided.

Teaching & Assessment

This course is taught by staff in the School of Dentistry.

The course is two years long and begins every second year, in September (2012, 2014, 2016 etc), and finishes at the end of June in the second year. Teaching follows the European week, i.e. Mondays to Fridays inclusive.

How you will be taught

Students will attend lectures, seminars and laboratory demonstrations. Students will treat patients under supervision on two half days per week, and carry out some of the laboratory work as advised by course tutors. More than one module may be taught concurrently and clinical work will be undertaken on regular sessions throughout the course.

Provision will be made for personal study time throughout the course and students are expected to make good use of this time to prepare for the assessments and to read widely on the subject of prosthodontics.

What you will study

Every candidate for the Degree shall be required to undertake the prescribed course of study and submit a dissertation. Candidates will be required to present themselves for examination, including oral examination.

The various aspects of fixed prosthodontics will be performed on a phantom head before proceeding to the clinic as it is considered important to thoroughly revise techniques to ensure a high standard of clinical work. This includes endodontics, post preparation, core build-ups and preparations for inlays, crowns, bridges and resin-retained bridges.

There are eight modules, all of which must be completed satisfactorily, together with a research project. The modules and their associated SCQF (the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework) credits are as follows:

How you will be assessed

Assessment will be comprised of a one-hour written short-answer examination for each taught module. Reports of four cases treated by the candidate will be presented to the external examiner at the final examination at the end of the course.

Students carry out a research project related to fixed and removable prosthodontics or dental materials and produce a typed and bound dissertation. This will include a critical review of the literature. It is anticipated that the proportion of time spent on the research project should be approximately 25% of the course.

The results of the module assessments and the logbook of clinical activity will be scrutinised by the examiners.

All components will carry equal weighting and candidates must achieve a pass in all examination.

This course provides good preparation for the MFDS examination of the Royal Colleges but is not approved for eligibility to sit the MRD examination.

The curriculum is organized in seven module groups:

Foundations of Web Science (two modules) establishes the main idea of Web Science. It provides an interdisciplinary primary view of the web and of more abstract web structures.

The Computer Science track (three modules) teaches the essential technical aspects, namely web engineering, semantic web and web retrieval.

Web and Society (two out of four modules) considers interaction of the web and different user groups: citizens, customers, entrepreneurs, and interest groups.

The module group Elective Courses in Computer Science provides a wide range of technical topics. Modules may be choosen freely from all Master courses in computer science with relevance to the web given at the University of Koblenz-Landau (three modules or more, mininum 18 ECTS).

Elective Interdisciplinary Courses contain web-related modules offered by our university from other disciplines (such as economy, social sciences, linguistics, anthropology, communication theory etc.). Students have to freely elect at least two modules (12 ECTS).

Topics for seminars and research lab can be freely chosen from Web Science subjects. Furthermore, this module group contains a social skills and leadership training..

The topic of the master's thesis can also be freely chosen from any Web Science subjects.

Requirements

Higher Education Entrance Qualification -

It is a legal requirement in Germany that students own a Higher education entrance qualification („Hochschulzugangsberechtigung“) respectively a Master entrance qualification („Masterzugangsberechtigung“), proven by school leaving certificates or studies completed at secondary education level.

Entrance qualification is not checked by us, but uni-assist (see application process), therefore please refrain from asking us if your diploma will be accepted. Uni-assist provides some further information on higher education entrance qualification.

Academic Background in Computer Science -

You need some academic background in computer science, such as a

bachelor's degree in computer science, business informatics, Computervisualistik (as offered by the University of Koblenz-Landau), Information management (as offered by the University of Koblenz-Landau until 2012 if 60 ECTS in computer science were acquired) or similar.

Students with a minor in computer science (at least 60 European Credit Points) can apply, too. Here we have to make a decision on a by-case-basis. To get an educated guess please contact the course guidance.

Only diplomas of international accredited universities will be accepted. If you are unshure if your academic background fulfils our requirements, do not hesitate to contact us: . Non-academic, practical experience in computer science alone does not qualify you for our programme.

Sufficient Grades in Previous Studies -

The German grading system ranges from 1 ("very good") to 6 ("insufficient"). Lower numbers mean better grades. To be eligible for our programme, the grades from your previous studies must be between 1 and 2.5. Grade conversion into the German system is done by uni-assist (cf. application procedure), so we cannot tell you if your GPA fis sufficient. For a first, non-binding estimation on your eligibility you might want to check the calculator provided by the University of Paderborn.

English Language Proficiency -

The medium of instruction for all required courses is English, some additional electives can be taken in German. Thus, we require a certain level of English proficiency such that studies can be undertaken successfully. Thus, a standardised language certificate is required – proof that your previous studies were held in English are not sufficient and not negiotiable. We accept three types of language proficiency certificates:

a TOEFL result of at least 79 (internet based), 550 (paper based) or 213 (computer based)

IELTS test with 6.5 points mininum

Cambridge certificate at level B2 or higher (find an exam center)

Proficiency of German language is not a requirement for application. However, additional elective courses are available in German, and we recommend to learn some basic German for daily life. Some hints on learning German can be found at Deutsche Welle.

Applicants need to supply a motivational letter. Please do not send lenghty standard letters describing your general interest in computer science and your appreciation of the German education system. Instead, refer only to our specific programme and follow these guidelines:

Civil Engineers deal with structures (e.g. buildings, bridges, tunnels, dams) and infrastructures (such as roads, railways, airports, water supply systems, etc.). The two-year Master of Science in Civil Engineering provides students with a sound preparation on these topics, allowing them to choose a curriculum (or ‘track’) among the five available: General, Geotechnics, Hydraulics, Transport Infrastructures and Structures. The course will train students in all aspects of the control of infectious diseases and prepare them for a career in a range of organisations.

This course will equip students with specialised skills that will facilitate a career in the control of infectious diseases as staff of health ministries, health departments, national or international disease control agencies, aid organisations or universities.

The majority of the research projects are performed overseas, with collaborating public health or research organisations and NGOs. Students are encouraged to take advantage of this overseas opportunity, which is crucial to the nature of the course.

Term 1:

After orientation, students take two compulsory modules: Basic Statistics and Introduction to Disease Agents & Their Control, which focus on the life cycle and characteristics of infectious disease agents according to their principal transmission routes; the principal intervention strategies used to combat infectious diseases; and examples of successes, partial successes and failures in intervention programmes against infectious diseases.

In addition, students take one of the following module combinations:

The early modern team at King's includes experts in the histories of the Reformation and the Enlightenment; gender; the material world of the Renaissance; race and racism, and on Britain, Ireland, France, the Netherlands, Portugal and the Iberian world. Our research connects the political and the social, the cultural and the religious dimensions of the early modern world, and our programme encourages interdisciplinary perspectives on early modern history.

The MA programme bridges the conventional division between British and European history, focusing on ways in which cultural, political and social themes stretch across the period c.1500-1800. The course ends with a tightly focused dissertation, but it begins by encouraging students to test concepts (identity, mentality, religion); to challenge models of change (modernization, state-building, the civilising process, reformation, enlightenment and revolution); and to try out methodologies (cultural history, gender, thinking with material objects, global history, using digital data).

The Concrete Structures course provides training in the design, analysis and assessment of concrete structures including bridges and buildings.

This is designed to cover a broad spectrum of structural engineering issues and their impact on reinforced and prestressed concrete structures.

All our MSc courses are career-orientated and cover both theoretical background and practical design considerations. Lectures are given mainly by full-time staff but important contributions are made by visiting professors and guest lecturers who are eminent industrialists.

Urban design is a discipline that sits between a number of built environment areas of knowledge including urban policy, architectural design, landscape design and property valuation.

Designed to be policy-relevant and practice-related, the course allows you to develop close links with organisations involved in the design and regeneration of our urban areas and practitioners will assist you through tutoring, presentations and as key sources in your research work. These organisations include leading urban design practices in the UK and beyond, Design Commission for Wales, and Local authorities. These links are also helpful bridges for your understanding of the range of possible urban design career opportunities.

Studio teaching is built around development sites in real contexts to develop creative, practical and sustainable solutions to a range of urban design problems.
