Prepare for a career in the brewing industry

This new one year full-time masters course prepares graduate level scientists for a career in brewing, or its allied industries. The programme facilitates the development of technically competent and creative brewers by providing substantial hands-on experience of practical brewing, using our state-of-the-art pilot facilities.

Practical brewing skills are supported with technical knowledge to ensure that graduates understand the scientific principles which underpin the brewing process and are able to innovate, problem solve, and conduct scientifically robust experiments. The programme ends with an innovative brewing research project, specifically designed for you to practise your acquired skills.
This course is taught by staff from the School of Biosciences with expertise in brewing and related sciences, together with invited contributions from specialist brewing practitioners; all are internationally renowned leaders within their field.

The course consists of taught modules (120 credits), followed by a brewing research project (60 credits) in which you will use skills and knowledge gained during the taught modules to devise and undertake an innovative piece of research. Typically, projects will be conducted in partnership with the brewing industry and provide opportunities for work experience.

This industrially significant applied research could potentially lead to process improvements and optimisation, as well as helping you develop a detailed knowledge of a particular area of the brewing process.

The UK Midlands region has strong historic links to brewing and our campus is situated just a short drive away from the famous brewing centre of Burton-upon-Trent. The MRes Brewing Science is a research based degree designed for individuals seeking to gain entry into this thriving and progressive sector. This flexible course will help you develop the laboratory skills needed for a career in research and development, particularly within the food and beverage industry.

While covering the scientific principles of brewing, the course allows you to focus on a novel research-based project. Projects are targeted towards subject areas of industrial significance, potentially leading to process improvements and optimisation, as well as helping you develop a detailed knowledge of particular areas of the brewing process.

This MRes course comprises a major brewing research project worth 150-160 credits, 20-30 credits of taught subject modules and up to 20 credits of generic training courses and optional modules.

The structure of the MRes is very flexible, allowing you to fit your research project around taught classes.

As a rough guide, approximately 85% of the course involves laboratory-based research work. The other 15% involves a taught course which is delivered through elearning and intensive week-long residential courses held at the University each semester. These residential courses incorporate lectures, seminars, workshops, laboratory practicals, industrial visits and tutorials. The course can be taken on a full or part-time basis.

Research projects are typically conducted on site within laboratories at the University, although there may be provision to undertake them within laboratories of an industrial partner (if you have secured one).
Taught modules are usually completed within the early part of the course, providing a good knowledge base for the research project.

Our series of ‘Fit for work’ events held on campus include seminars, talks, networking and recruitment exercises and involve a range of industry professionals from graduates with their own companies, to representatives from the major breweries and distilling companies.

Biotechnology is the exploitation of living systems or molecules from them for commercial gain. Although the word 'biotechnology' is only a few decades old, humankind has been using biotechnology for millennia, for example in baking, brewing and sewage treatment.

Modern biotechnologies rely on our increasing ability to manipulate organisms at the genetic level and include novel waste treatments and bioremediations, new pharmaceuticals, the exploitation of enzymes in 'green catalysis' and exciting new diagnostic techniques. In the 20th century our lives were transformed by information technology; the 21st century may see an equally great transformation, but this time led by biotechnology.

This Masters degree aims to teach the fundamental molecular bioscience underpinning biotechnology along with examples of its current applications.

PROGRAMME CONTENT

This MSc is taught by research-active staff members in the School of Biological Sciences. In addition, fundamental biological research skills are taught and students are given an understanding of bio-entrepreneurship. The degree culminates in a three-month, intensive research project in a laboratory in Queen's, thus preparing graduates for a career in research biotechnology.

Its practical applications include age-old techniques such as brewing and fermentation, which are still important today. In recent decades, gene modification has revolutionized the biotechnology industry, spawning countless new products and improving established processes.

More and more types of fermentation are being used, and most new medicines are products of biotechnology. Modern biotechnology has become an applied area of science with a multidisciplinary approach embracing recombinant DNA technology, cellular biology, microbiology, biochemistry, as well as process design, engineering, modelling and control.

Programme summary

Biotechnology is a broad, multidisciplinary area of science. A Master of Science in Biotechnology is an expert in one (group of) discipline(s) and has to have sufficient knowledge and skills in other disciplines to cooperate with experts from the other disciplines. This MSc gives students excellent postgraduate training, and leads to exciting careers in research, industry, the NHS and other clinical institutions. Many of our graduates have also gone on to study bioscience at PhD level.

You’ll develop an in-depth knowledge of medical and molecular genetics, and receive clinical genetics training to prepare you for a research project in a modern research facility. You’ll have the chance to collaborate with top genetics research laboratories and clinical partners.

This MSc was developed in partnership with the Sheffield Diagnostic Genetics Service (SDGS), which is a world-renowned clinical genetics facility. This relationship is unique to this course and gives you the opportunity to be taught by the SDGS Director and the Lead Scientist for Constitutional Genetics.
