Computational Life Science

In recent years, biological research has become increasingly interdisciplinary, focusing heavily on mathematical modeling and on the analysis of system-wide quantitative information. Sophisticated high-throughput techniques pose new challenges for data integration and data interpretation. The Computational Life Science (CompLife) MSc program at Jacobs University meets these challenges by covering computational, theoretical and mathematical approaches in biology and the life sciences. It is geared towards students of bioinformatics, computer science, physics, mathematics and related areas.

Das Ziel des Studiengangs besteht darin, unter diesen Bedingungen auf eine psychologisch qualifizierte Berufstätigkeit vorzubereiten.

Der Master in Psychologie an der Jacobs University

Das Curriculum des MSc Psychologie an der Jacobs University Bremen lehnt sich eng an die Empfehlungen der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Psychologie (DGPs) für Master-Studiengänge an. In einer Studienzeit von vier Semestern werden 120 ECTS-Punkte erworben. Zwei Drittel der Lehrveranstaltungen werden auf Deutsch durchgeführt, ein Drittel auf Englisch. Inhaltlich umfasst der MSc Psychologie drei Module:

1. Klinische Psychologie (15 ECTS-Punkte) - befasst sich mit dem Wissen um Entstehung, Diagnose, Therapie und Prävention psychischer Erkrankungen.

2. Arbeits-, Organisations- und Wirtschaftspsychologie (15 ECTS-Punkte) - analysiert, wie moderne Arbeit für den Menschen optimaler gestaltet werden kann.

3. Interkulturelle Psychologie (10 ECTS-Punkte) - untersucht, wie das Zusammenleben von Menschen mit unterschiedlichem kulturellem Hintergrund ermöglicht werden kann.

Neben diesen Schwerpunkten enthält der Studiengang eine solide Ausbildung in wissenschaftlicher Methodik (20 ECTS-Punkte) und in der Kommunikation wissenschaftlicher Ergebnisse (5 ECTS-Punkte). Der Studiengang wird durch ein Nebenfach (10 ECTS-Punkte), ein Praktikum (15 ECTS-Punkte) und die Masterarbeit (30 ECTS-Punkte) vervollständigt.

The need to manage supply chains, production facilities and transport more efficiently has intensified the demand for educated professionals with both management and engineering skills. The graduate program in Supply Chain Engineering and Management (MSc) at Jacobs University aims to meet this demand by educating and training the leaders of tomorrow.

COURSE SUMMARY

Following completion of the Human Genome Project, the pharmaceutical industry is preparing for a revolution in cancer and inherited disorder therapies. This course is training a new generation of bioscientists to meet challenges at the interface between biology and chemistry, and to apply pharmaceutical and analytical knowledge directly to improve quality of life.

The course develops a broad knowledge and conceptual base in the field of drug design and discovery, with an emphasis on new developments and advances in drug identification, understanding drug pharmacology and novel therapeutics, and appreciating how these topics interact with bioscience businesses and enterprise.

This programme is designed to enable you to gain systematic knowledge and critical awareness of current problems and new insights regarding the analysis of biomolecules. There is particular reference to drug design and discovery, along with a comprehensive and critical understanding of applied techniques and their current application in research in the field of biomolecule analysis and drug design.

This course is aimed at students who wish to acquire the specialised skills needed to design drugs for the 21st century. It is ideal for anyone with primarily either a chemistry or biochemistry based undergraduate degree wishing to broaden their knowledge base. The part-time route is well suited to those who already work in industry as it is possible to carry out research projects within the place of work. Prospective students must be committed to developing their skills and knowledge for a career in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology sectors.

TEACHING

Teaching is through:

  • Lectures to provide thorough grounding in the techniques of biomolecule characterisation and drug design.
  • Practical sessions and workshops to demonstrate techniques and methods used in biomolecule characterisation and drug design, and provide a structured opportunity for you to practice techniques and methods in analytical biosciences and drug design.
  • Guided reading that will recommend texts, key articles and other materials in advance of, or following, lecture classes.  
  • The research project which will enable you to practice the application of appropriate, and selected, bioscientific techniques in an academic or industrial context, and demonstrate research methodologies and skills appropriate to and valuable with biomolecule characterisation and drug design. During your research project You will be supervised by expert staff who are actively engaged in international research programmes.

ASSESSMENT

There are eight taught 15 credit modules each of which have only one assessment (100%). Each exam is 2 hours.

The School is home to state-of-the-art laboratories with dedicated research labs for your research project. The University has invested £3m in the world-class teaching facility equipped with the latest technologies, which has been specially designed to promote an excellent student teaching experience.

The Bodmer Lab is a bright, modern space and has been designed with interconnecting walls which can be easily configured into two, three or four separate laboratories, for maximum flexibility and occupancy. An AV system allows the lecturer to be linked visually and audibly with some or all of the interconnected labs.

A new Translational Medicine Lab will be opened in mid-2017.

This course is particularly suited to those who wish to pursue a career in the biotechnological or pharmaceutical industries, which are priority areas in both the UK and abroad.
