Our MSc programme offers you a distinctive approach to understanding recent changes in Brazil and the impact of its social, cultural, economic and political development. It includes examination of such issues as industrialisation, urbanisation, economic growth and globalisation; oscillation between military and civilian rule; mass movements demanding a variety of civil, political and economic rights; and complicated and contested constitutional, legal and political reforms.

- Course purpose -

Our programme provides you with high-quality postgraduate teaching and research training if you wish to specialise on Brazil, either out of academic interest or as preparation for a career related to the country. In addition to broadening and deepening your understanding of modern Brazil, our programme demonstrates the value of a variety of different theoretical perspectives and research methods used in the analysis of the country. Our programme also allows you to study Brazil in global and comparative perspective; on the one hand, it will be possible to compare Brazil with the emerging powers Russia, China and India by taking modules offered by the Russia, China and India Institutes; on the other, it will be possible to situate Brazil within its regional context by taking optional modules on Latin America.

- Course format and assessment -

Our programme consists of 180 credits: a 60-credit dissertation; 40 credits of taught core modules; at least 40 credits of optional modules from a list taught by the Brazil Institute; and up to 40 credits of optional modules from a list taught by affiliated departments, from complementary programmes, and from other schools.

The format of the taught modules in the Brazil Institute consists of 10 2-hour seminars followed by a 1-hour tutorial on alternate weeks. Students are expected to allow at least 6 hours per module per week for self-study time while continuously preparing for their dissertation throughout the year.

The majority of our modules are assessed on the basis of two essays, 1,500 words and 4,000 words, weighted at 25 per cent and 75 per cent respectively. Some modules are assessed by an essay and a presentation, for the dissertation a short research proposal followed by a 15,000-word thesis, while the internship module is assessed via one essay.

Our programme aims to prepare you for both research and non-academic professional careers in government, business and the corporate sector, international agencies and NGOs, and policy research.

Projects and field trips (France and Brazil)

A wide range of field trips and field projects in both France and Brazil will expand your real-world knowledge in an international context. This equips you to analyse issues facing the sector and apply your skills to solve problems.

Field trips are a component of each period, and field projects are integrated into Periods 2 and 3.

Internship (Worldwide)

Period 4 (June to October or December)

During your four- to six-month mandatory internship, you will gain an inside look into the day-to-day operations and marketing of an enterprise in the food or agricultural sector anywhere in the world. Audencia students complete the internship before graduation for 30 ECTS. Internships in France are paid; this will vary from country to country, depending on local laws.

The internship highlights your ability to apply theoretical knowledge in a real-world setting, helping you build your network and strengthen future career possibilities.

Final report

We encourage you to use your internship as the basis for this report, highlighting your real-world experience and demonstrating your value to prospective employers. You’ll submit the written report in mid-October and give an oral presentation in early November (at Audencia or via Skype).

What is Business Development?

CNCP RECOGNITION

Students graduating from the MSc Business Development also receive a certificate conferring them the title of Manager International. This title, recognized by the Commission Nationale de la Certification Professionnelle - an agency belonging to the French Ministry of Labor - attests to the successful acquisition of a core of international management skills and knowledge necessary for future roles as managers in an international context. The Manager International label is registered on the Répertoire National des Certifications Professionnelles at Level 1, the highest level for such certification.

At the end of the classroom portion of the program, each student will be required to complete a thesis, known as the Final Management Project. This work is approximately 20,000 words in length and is completed under the guidance of a GGSB tutor.

To successfully complete the Final Management Project, you are required to address a particular research question or knowledge gap in the field of your study.

This should be business oriented and coherent with your program’s objectives. You may choose to write your Final Management Project on a topic grounded in your internship experience.

During this program, participants will have the opportunity to become real-life business developers by exploring a Live Business Case provided by companies working in partnerships with the MSc Business Development program. The work students do on the Live Business Case is closely linked to the International Study Residency. Students will work in groups, delving deeply into their cases during the seven months from October to June under the supervision of a GGSB coach.

EXPECTATIONS AND OBJECTIVES FOR MSC BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT STUDENTS

The Live Business Cases are launched by a briefing given by the company.

The Live Business Case will cover:

- Looking at business development and management issues from an integrated, holistic perspective,
- Provide students with a final opportunity to apply learning from the material, courses and lectures that they have studied.

At the conclusion of the Live Business Case, students will be able to:

- Build a company analysis
- Select and apply a methodology, and make useful and efficient recommendations
- Understand the Business Development process
- Provide critical analysis
- Make strategic decisions
- Work in small multicultural groups under time constraints
- Produce compelling written and oral presentations
- Demonstrate communication, negotiation and leadership skills

At the end of 7 months of the Live Business Case, each group will produce a written report and make an oral presentation to the Jury (company tutor, school tutor and program director) and the other groups from the program.

International Residency Trip: An Amazing Opportunity!

As part of the MSc Business Development program, students have the opportunity to visit one emerging economy each year (Brazil, Russia, China, India). The goal is to create an integrated learning experience for all participants.

The International Residency Trip combines academic lectures, corporate visits, and cultural activities. The students gain extensive knowledge of global business practices to prepare them as business developers that consistently perform across cultures and compete in a global market. The International Residency Trip is linked with the Live Business Case and students will have the amazing opportunity to visit important companies.

FOREIGN LANGUAGES

Foreign language skills are essential in business today and the program is taught in English but provides the possibility to learn a foreign language at the same time.
No prior knowledge of French is required to attend the program. Non-French speakers may study French, native and fluent French speakers will have the possibility to choose from Spanish or Chinese. The language component is not compulsory.

MANAGERIAL CREATIVITY: A SELF MANAGEMENT METHOD

This course/ work shop is an introduction to all group assignments to be carried out all through the year. In order to help you be efficient when working in small groups, you need to know not only your personal strengths and improvement points but also those of your class.

By discovering them during this course, you'll be able to imagine together how to leverage the strengths of your class and how to manage the improvement points. You have to manage the classroom as a company so we will appoint the different representatives in charge of taking care of the main aspects of the construction of the class as a performing team: event manager, class representative, time keeper, project leader, MSC community leader, Alumni communication and coordination manager. We are a smaller department than many, but manage at the same time to maintain a variety of very distinctive areas of strength in research. As a result we are uniquely placed to offer taught programmes which are tailored to the individual in a friendly, supportive atmosphere and, for research students, close contact with your supervisors from the outset.

There is a high degree of interdisciplinary activity, with students and staff from all disciplines interacting through institutional research centres, cross-School reading groups, research groups and seminars.

We offer an MA in Latin American Studies and an MA in Modern Languages (French / German / Hispanic Studies/Italian) and supervision on a wide range of topics for both MPhil and PhD study.

Applications are welcome for both full-time and part-time study. Postgraduate students form an integral part of our research culture, and are encouraged to become involved in conference, workshops and seminar series, in addition, we have postgraduate reading groups and a regular programme of postgraduate workshops involving leading scholars visiting the institution. We have an active and vibrant research community, with staff engaging in research covering eight language areas consisting of French, German, Italian, Spanish, Galician, Catalan, Portuguese and Corsican. Research interests range from medieval manuscripts to contemporary cyber literature, and cover a wide geographical remit, with staff working on American, Latin American, and Caribbean, African and Indian contexts as well as European ones.

We are home to three scholarly journals: Bulletin of Hispanic Studies, Bulletin of Latin American Research, and Migrations and Identities as well as a number of prominent book series.

Research Overview

Our research activities are broadly organised around four research groups in addition to the Research Institute of Latin American Studies. The groups are engaged in interdisciplinary work, taking in literary, visual and historical sources, and collaborating across the language areas.

French Studies

Research interests in French Studies cover all areas of French literature, culture and history, including Medieval studies, sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth century studies, French theatre, French cinema, travel literature, francophone postcolonial studies (including French language representations of India),modern and contemporary France, and sociolinguistics. Colleagues are actively involved in interdisciplinary research centres, namely the Research Centre in Eighteenth-Century Studies, the Centre of International Slavery, the Centre for Medieval and Renaissance Studies and the India in the World Research Centre.

German Studies

Postgraduate teaching and supervision in German Studies covers the full range of modern (post 1750) German literary and cultural studies, including German cinema. It also offers tuition and supervision in many areas of social history, where staff specialisms include gender and women’s history since the eighteenth-century, twentieth-century labour history, Holocaust studies, issues of race and ethnicity (Afro-German and Gypsy studies), the culture and politics of East and West Germany and contemporary Berlin. The University Library’s Special Collections include uniquely rich holdings on German and European Gypsy studies. Research contacts exist with numerous universities and institutes in Germany and the United States.

Hispanic Studies

The University has the oldest chair of Spanish in the country (established 1908). It has a distinguished tradition of excellence within an extensive area of Hispanic Studies teaching and research which includes not only the Peninsula (Spain and Portugal), but also Latin America (Peru, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, etc). Among the section’s achievements and publications in research are the Bulletin of Hispanic Studies, a quarterly journal of international influence (published by Liverpool University Press), Hispanic Textual Research and Criticism (TRAC) and a scholarly series of books and editions. Postgraduate supervision and courses are offered in diverse specialist subjects within the broad range of Spanish, Portuguese, Catalan and Latin American Studies. This reflects the varied research interests and publications of members of staff in the section. Postgraduate students have at their disposal in the Sydney Jones Library large holdings in Hispanic books and periodicals, which are among the most comprehensive in the country.

Italian Studies

Postgraduate supervision in Italian is provided in the following areas: sociolinguistics, Italian dialectology, Italian cinema and crime/detective fiction. Postgraduate students benefit from the remarkable digitised collections and resources available in the Sydney Jones Library and the personalised services provided by library staff.

Latin American Studies

Latin American Studies is one of Modern languagesa dn Cultures' major research specialisms. The six permanent members of staff have research interests in the following domains of Latin American Studies: anthropology, cultural studies, history, literature, politics, and sociology and extend to Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Central America, the Caribbean and southern USA. The Sydney Jones Library is an acknowledged centre of excellence for collections in Latin American Studies. Additional facilities for all postgraduates include access to regular seminars and short conferences, language tuition, and use of the University’s networked computer facilities.

The programme develops students' understanding of the problems and debates which have arisen in the field of Spanish, Portuguese & Latin American Studies both through classroom-led curriculum-based study and supervised research. It provides a rigorous but innovative framework within which students can deepen their study of topics of individual interest. You will be given training in theoretical concepts and in research skills in order to equip you to undertake research in your chosen area. You will take up to 6 modules and also write a dissertation which draws on your core studies and also your own particular interests, all supervised in an outstanding research department.

This Master's degree in politics will give you an advanced understanding of 2 increasingly interconnected phenomena in world politics: the responses of states, international institutions and non-governmental organisations to the opportunities and challenges of globalisation; and the enhanced international, economic and political influence of emerging powers such as Brazil, Russia, India and China. We explore key international institutions, such as the World Bank and the Group of Twenty (G20), as well as key non-governmental actors such as Amnesty International. The programme uses concepts, theories and evidence from the study of international relations, comparative politics and public policy to understand real-world policy problems across different sectors of the global economic and political system. This course will appeal to students who wish to learn more about international public policy and cutting-edge issues in the study of world politics; it brings together a unique body of UK and international students with a passion for world politics and, in many cases, relevant policy experience.

The first core module examines the emerging powers of Brazil, Russia, India and China, among others, from a comparative, interdisciplinary perspective and in the context of global politics. IN ESC GRENOBLE

1) Advanced Decision Techniques

Objectives/Learning outcomes: Good knowledge of quantitative tools for decision-making.

Contents: This course presents the main quantitative modelling and simulation tools to help in decision-making.

2) Strategy, Innovation and Entrepreneurship

This course focuses on the strategic choices: the decisions that shape the future of an organization. This course will address first the strategic choices that the manager must operate in an entrepreneurship environment (opportunity, business model design), then different options for development and growth patterns (growth internal / external growth, mergers and acquisitions, alliances).

3) Corporate Governance

Objectives/Learning outcomes: At the end of the course, the students:

- will know how to position and use concepts and techniques in finance, accounting, management control and law learnt during the common core subjects in a more global framework of analysis,
- will have learnt the legislation covering corporate governance,
- will be aware of the present developments in practice and the principal discussions concerning corporate governance,
- will be able to establish a diagnosis on the quality of a company's corporate governance.

Contents: It is essential for every manager to understand who determines the objectives of corporations and of other organizations, how they are governed and how their managers are incentivized and monitored. The course covers the following themes: value creation, the legal rules and the practices of company management(remuneration, ethics, social responsibility, governance "codes"), the legal rights and the behaviour of shareholders, the impact of financial markets on governance (shareholders activism, takeovers, LBOs). In addition the students have the opportunity to apply the main concepts and techniques of finance, accounting and management control to the case of a listed company.

4) Geopolitics

Objectives/Learning outcomes: At the end of the course, students will be able to:

- acquire the basics of a geopolitical culture allowing them to develop a reading list for current geopolitical and economic affairs,
- understand the geopolitical conditions for undertaking business in certain emerging and/or risk-laden geopolitical situations.

Contents: The object of this course is to allow students to acquire knowledge about geopolitical and economic affairs in certain zones and emerging and risk-related countries in the world. During the course, the following themes will be covered:

- the globalisation of the economy and its players, notably national States, and international and non-governmental organisations,
- geopolitical and economic analysis of certain countries and zones: Brazil, Russia, China, the Mediterranean and Africa,
- the problems of Afghanistan and Pakistan will also be discussed,
- Europe will be studied through analysis of the different themes mentioned above.

Objectives/Learning outcomes: At the end of this course, students will:

- understand the organizational and managerial specificities of contemporary organizations,
- know about recent developments in organizational thinking relating to institutional theory, power and politics, routines, and organizational cognition,
- be able to reflect on the specific challenges to leadership and corporate social responsibility in contemporary organizations.

Contents: This course addresses key issues for understanding and managing contemporary organizations. It seeks to move beyond simple managerialist views by integrating recent developments in organizational thinking with the dual challenges of organizational leadership and corporate social responsibility. Topics covered in this course include institutionalized environments, innovation and entrepreneurship, social movements, networks and social capital, power and politics in contemporary organizations, organizational routines and decision making, sense making and cognition in organizations, and organizational change. Each topic will be introduced through case studies alongside theoretical readings, and each of the course sessions will discuss the consequences of these topics for both leadership processes and corporate social responsibility.
The course will be demanding in terms of class preparation, contribution and after-class work, and hopefully rewarding in terms of generating novel insights into contemporary organizational and managerial challenges.

Applied Research Project

During the whole training period, the students, divided into sub-groups of 2-3 students, work on a problematic related a strong issue in the humanitarian and development sector. It is an applied research which leads to a written report in English and its presentation before a jury composed by the tutor and the partner if possible and relevant. This applied research is an integral part of the training programme and it is monitored by a tutor.
The month of December will be specifically dedicated to work on this project.
During the second semester, even if students are abroad, they have to organize themselves to work on this project.
The grade given on this work will be included in the final transcript.

OBJECTIVE

To work as a team during the whole training period to sort out a humanitarian and/or development management issue.

This project will require:

- To write a report in English (20,000 – 25,000 words) which may remain confidential; it is possible to write a summary for the organisation in a foreign language if required. Students have to submit the final report to the tutor 15 days before the oral presentation. The deadline for the oral presentation is mid-november 2014 (15 November 2014);
- To write a case study-based summary;
- To prepare the oral presentation to the jury in English.

STUDENTS’ PROFILES

Students involved in this applied research are from the MSc in Humanitarian Programme Management delivered by ESC Grenoble and Bioforce.

EXPECTED RESULTS

- A specific humanitarian and/or development management issue is defined.
- A bibliographical research is consolidated.
- Concrete proposals and outlooks are drawn up.
- A critical analysis is provided.
- Relevant recommendations are made.

The definition of the issue has to be validated by both Bioforce and ESC Grenoble. A specific deadline will be communicated by Bioforce.

Rigor in diagnostic, analysis and facts interpretations, as well as recommendations will be required.
This work aims to support organizations in their development and functioning. In this way, we expect students to be creative (while being realist) and to practice benchmarks. This research work is neither an operational mission nor a counseling one. The report presented is not an internship report.

EXEMPTION OF “GRAND MÉMOIRE” – FOR THE ESC STUDENTS

Usually, ESC Grenoble students have to write a “Grand mémoire” during their enrollment. As they already write a specific applied research report, they benefit from an exemption of this “Grand mémoire”.

Assignment

Students from the MSc in HPM have to realize an assignment, after their study period, during 20 weeks at least. The presentation before a jury must be done before the 15th of November 2014.
The aim of this assignment is to reinforce students’ autonomy and to further develop their skills as a humanitarian programme manager in the humanitarian and development sector.

Students are to submit to Bioforce assignment terms of reference in order to be validated. As a second step, the ESC Grenoble will give the final validation.

The ESC Grenoble is in charge of all administrative issues regarding the assignment.

The evaluation process for the assignment is the following:

- A written report including :
- a context (region, country, organisation, programme, …) presentation,
- a description and analysis of the objectives and results obtained,
- an analysis of the key challenges faced during the assignment,
- an analysis of the impact of the training period on their professional capacities as a humanitarian programme manager.

- An oral presentation before a jury.

The final mark will be a global mark including the written report and the oral presentation.

The MSc in Education Studies and TESOL combines a broad exploration of educational issues, practical experience of observing local schools, and training in TESOL theory, practice and research. On the TESOL side, the degree will provide you with a solid grounding in the principles of language learning and teaching and an understanding of research methods in TESOL, as well as giving you the opportunity to pursue an interest in teaching young learners, computer-assisted and online language learning, or English grammar and discourse analysis. In education studies, you will join a programme of visits to local schools and learn about the wider pastoral role of being an educator in a professional context. You will engage in discussions around the issues of difference and diversity and consider critically some of the wider theoretical and policy-based contexts for professional practice. You will also explore different approaches to educational research and their underlying assumptions.

Who is this course for?

This degree is particularly appropriate for teachers (with at least one year’s experience) who want to study for a post-graduate degree with a strong education element as well as a focus on TESOL. You may be attracted by a broader qualification than the MSc TESOL, or you may want to extend your teaching experience with knowledge about TESOL. Delivery and assessment

The taught modules delivered on a face-to-face and blended basis. The delivery types (e.g. lectures, workshops and student presentations) are carefully selected to suit the module content and your needs.

Summative assessment for the taught modules will vary depending on their respective learning outcomes (e.g. presentation, annotated bibliography, essay, research proposal). For each 20-credit module, you will be asked to produce a piece of work which is equivalent to a 3,000-word essay.

The Natural Resources Institute (NRI) is a specialised multidisciplinary organisation within the University of Greenwich providing research and consultancy in support of sustainable development, economic growth and poverty reduction, principally, but not solely, in the natural resources sector. NRI has a rapidly growing programme of research at MPhil and PhD level on social-scientific and interdisciplinary topics relating to development in the South and in Europe. The institute provides a vibrant research environment for MPhil and PhD students in development studies with students from a number of countries and a variety of backgrounds in research, government and non-governmental organisations. Students are also actively encouraged to network with peers from other universities in the UK.

The Livelihoods and Institutions Department works on a number of themes related to natural resources, environment and development. Particular interests include participatory and client-oriented methods of agricultural research and their institutionalisation, agricultural service delivery, performance and impact assessment methodologies, community based natural resource management, land tenure, urban agriculture and rural-urban linkages, pastoralism, vulnerability to disasters and climate change. The Food and Markets Department works on many economics-based development issues. Professional ‘Building Services Engineers’ design all of the systems that are necessary in a building for occupants to carry out their business. These systems include: heating, lighting, air-conditioning and electrical systems. The role is increasingly involved with the provision of sustainable, energy efficient and green building within our society. Services have to be carefully designed and installed so that they are unobtrusive and aesthetically pleasing, and also work in harmony with the architecture of the building. The programme will respond to the worldwide demand for building services engineers who have a sound knowledge engineering principles and the ability to apply this knowledge to the complex situations prevailing within the building services industry.

The course is available either as a full-time, 1-year programme at Brunel or as a 3-to-5 year distance learning programme.

With the growing complexity of engineering services in modern buildings and the significance of energy conservation and emissions control, the role of the building services engineer is becoming increasingly important.

As an interdisciplinary profession that involves the specification, design, installation and management of all the engineering services associated with the built environment, comfort and function also need to be combined – which calls for engineers with a wide range of knowledge and skills.

Modes of Study

1 Year Full-Time: The taught element of the course (September to April) includes seven modules; delivery will be by a combination of lectures, tutorials and group/seminar work. A further four months (May to September) is spent undertaking the dissertation.

3-5 Years Distance Learning: The distance learning programme is designed to enable you to conduct most of your studies at home, in your own time and at your own pace.

There is no requirement to attend lectures at Brunel University and there is no set timetable of lectures, instead you follow a structured programme of self-study at home or at work. This gives you the freedom to arrange a work programme to study yourself and you should usually allow about twelve hours each week for study.

There are set submission dates for assignments but we have tried to design the programme so that they are well-spaced, giving you the maximum flexibility in your study plans.

You can take between three and five years to complete the course. The average is three years, with students taking four modules in the first year, four modules in the second year and the dissertation in the third year. However, depending on your other commitments you can take longer up to a maximum of five years.

You are supplied with a study pack in the form of textbooks and CD-ROMs; you have assignments to submit and exams to sit each year.

Examinations can be taken either at Brunel University or in the country you are resident in. We have an extensive network of organisations (universities, colleges and British Council offices) throughout the world who will provide invigilation services.
