Luxury Perspectives and Practice
Designed to critically assess the complexities of the luxury concept and the evolution of the global luxury sector. Students will analyse how perceptions of luxury value evolve across different product/market contexts and will investigate how individual consumers’ characteristics, social dynamics and brand related factors affect decisions to purchase luxury products and services.
Finance and Wealth Management
Develops a critical awareness of modern wealth management and builds on students' previous exposure to the financial management principles and techniques. The module will focus on all three major aspects of wealth management, which would be: wealth creation, wealth preservation and wealth transfer.
Luxury Distribution and Retail
Provides a critical analysis of management trends and developments with respect to the retailing and distribution of luxury goods and services. The dimensions of the luxury retail experience are considered - with a particular emphasis upon the creation of differential advantage through store image creation and customer service.
Strategy Leadership and Social Responsibility
Enables students to critically analyse the roles that managers play in formulating, implementing and evaluating strategy within organisations in the luxury sector. Students are encouraged reflect upon the importance of leadership in developing, protecting and exploiting strategic capabilities within organisations. The module is designed to help students take on a significant leadership role in their future careers in the luxury sector.
Strategic Brand Management
Explores the nature and role of the product from the perspective of brand delivery and experience across a range of luxury sectors. It highlights the importance of effective brand management in the luxury goods and services sector through a detailed consideration of the relative literature, supported by contextual examples.
Legal Aspects of Brand Management
Focuses on and contextualises niche aspects of law so as to be accessible to those without prior legal study of intellectual property law or regulation. It provides foundations for critical, analytical and legally creative thinking while exploring legal issues related to trademarks, domain names, passing off, design rights, patent rights, copyright, and issues relating to advertising standards.
Research Project: Design and Methods
Introduces students to research approaches and time management skills essential for their research project. The module provides essential knowledge of research design across key areas and adopts a critical perspective in comparing and contrasting alternative research models.
The final element of the programme is the dissertation, which provides you with an opportunity to design and undertake a piece of original research in a selective area of Luxury Brand Marketing. As part of the research, students have the opportunity to apply theories, concepts, theories and frameworks introduced in the modules that were previously taught.
The dissertation can assume one of 3 forms: An Applied Research Project, an Inquiry Project or a Business Consultancy Project.

The MSc Marketing and Brand Management focuses on planning and applying brand management strategies. You will learn about the importance of brand management within an overall framework of marketing and business management.
If you begin your course in September you have the choice to apply for an 8 month paid work placement in a marketing role instead of completing either a dissertation or client project. By gaining this professional experience you will be well prepared for your future career.
You will develop a strong foundation in marketing theory and practice, combined with a specialist perspective on brand management, including brand values and a wide range of related communication channels.
This course will prepare you to work for a branding or marketing agency or for a marketing, branding or communications department within an organisation. With practical case studies and live scenarios, you will apply brand management theory and analyse and critique what makes a successful brand. You will enhance your employment and future career prospects, through developing your knowledge of marketing and brand management theory and how it is applied in practice.
You will study eight compulsory modules and a module which helps develop your professional and academic skills. In addition, you will choose two optional modules and you also have the opportunity to apply for an 8 month paid work placement in a marketing role, or you can complete either a dissertation or client project. If you choose not to take a work placement, the course lasts 12 months. If you start in September and take the work placement the course last 17 months. Much of the teaching on the course takes the form of interactive workshops, but there are also lectures from staff and visiting speakers. Lectures, discussions, role-play exercises and seminars are linked with selected case studies and assessments to strengthen your practical analysis and decision-making skills. You will develop your skills in working as part of a team through structured group assignments and an online group-based marketing simulation.
You will gain practical experience and put your knowledge of marketing approaches and theory into practice during live research projects for an organisation. Teaching staff at the Business School are engaged in academic research and/or come from an industry background with in-depth practical experience of marketing and brand management issues. Visiting speakers from the world of marketing and branding, consultancies and research bodies augment the programme through leading edge discussions and specialist events.

We offer an International Business in Practice Study Trip module. The purpose of this study trip is to give postgraduate students a hands-on, intensive experience with the ideas and practices of global business. The programme will include presentations from local management executives and experts. Students will have direct interaction with management executives and practices through site visits to major corporations and agencies.
This study trip is voluntary and all costs associated with the trip will need to be funded by you. It is not linked to university assessments in any way. The MSc International Marketing Strategy is made up of several modules that combine to provide comprehensive coverage of the challenging and dynamic discipline of international marketing. The content of the course reflects the key strategic decisions that underpin international marketing, the decision to internationalise, market identification, screening and selection, market entry, tactical action programmes, implementation, monitoring and evaluation. Examples of specific issues that are covered include: standardisation adaptation, cultural drivers of customer behaviour, the impact of global trends, country of origin effect, international branding issues and the use of social media. The dissertation gives you an opportunity to complete a substantial piece of independent research on an international marketing topic of your choice.

One year, full time over three trimesters.
In addition to attending lectures and seminars (around 10-12 hours a week) you will be expected to spend significant time (25 or more hours a week) engaged in preparing for classes and additional self-directed study as well as participating in the support programme.
An innovative range of individual and group based assessments are used involving the preparation of essays, marketing plans, case study analyses, portfolios and presentations as well as the dissertation.
Throughout the course you are taught by experienced academic staff with specialist knowledge of their subject areas. Taught modules are delivered using a combination of lecture and seminar sessions, with a strong emphasis on participation and discussion. To bring concepts and theories to life, extensive use is made of real world case-studies and practical exercises supplemented by extensive on-line learning materials
To integrate these modules and enrich the experience of the student there is a supporting programme of workshop activities and events. Typically these include a Summer School as well as guest speakers, marketing games, study trips and learning skills development sessions throughout the year.
In July 2015, students studying on the course benefitted from a week-long Summer School that provided the opportunity to have marketing concepts brought to life through study trips, visiting speakers and participating in a Marketing Challenge based on Northampton’s leather heritage.
The students were able to find out how leather products are produced with a tour of the tannery at the University’s Institute for Creative Leather Technologies. Professor Mike Redwood spoke on the way luxury leather brands market themselves and the particular issues they face in developing markets.
Successful completion of this course will prepare you for a career in international marketing with the potential to achieve success as a senior marketing manager with a multi-national organisation.
