Explores how the assets of a luxury company can be used to create and deliver value to stakeholders, particularly customers and stakeholders. Legal Aspects of Brand Management

Focuses on and contextualises niche aspects of law so as to be accessible to those without prior legal study of intellectual property law or regulation. It provides foundations for critical, analytical and legally creative thinking while exploring legal issues related to trademarks, domain names, passing off, design rights, patent rights, copyright, and issues relating to advertising standards.

Developing Personal and Professional Competence

Enables students to identify, understand, develop and articulate their key personal abilities in the context of their future career aspirations. Students will be given the opportunity to undertake an industry placement, volunteer, study abroad or take part in desk based consultancy in order to be better prepared for their personal and professional life.

Consumer-Led Sustainable Marketing

Designed to provide an in-depth and critical understanding of consumer-led sustainable marketing practices. Students are introduced to the concept of customer insight and its role in marketing decision-making. The module evaluates the psychological, social and economic roots of the discipline of consumer behaviour and relates these to contemporary consumers.

Global Branding and Integrated Marketing Communications

Provides students with a critical understanding of branding theory through an examination of key theoretical frameworks relevant to brand identity, personality, brand relationships and brand culture. Various sectors including fashion, luxury, travel and entertainment are explored while providing students an understanding of marketing communication's mix.

Research Project: Design and Methods

Introduces students to research approaches and time management skills essential for their research project. The module provides essential knowledge of research design across key areas and adopts a critical perspective in comparing and contrasting alternative research models.

Dissertation

A fast-track route to the Marketing Management MA qualification is available for holders of the CIM Postgraduate Diploma in Marketing (or equivalent). Holders of this qualification will be exempt from all but two modules:

  • For MSc: Quantitative Analysis for Marketing and Management Marketing Dissertation

Upon the successful completion of the MSc Marketing Course, two modules will be waived, meaning students need only complete the remaining two modules (versus completing all four required modules) in order to gain a Professional Diploma in Marketing. This exciting opportunity will provide you with the competitive edge you are looking for to embark on a successful career.

MSc Marketing with Brand Management

The MSc Marketing with Brand Management is a specialist, 12-month full-time taught postgraduate course. The course offers students the opportunity to hone skills necessary to plan, manage and evaluate brand projects. This course provides a stronger focus on the specifics of developing and using brands and branding in the marketing context. All students will register for the MSc Course in Marketing in the first instance and be given the opportunity to change degree pathway at the end of the first semester.
The course is modular, so the credits awarded at the end of each assessed module can be accumulated towards a postgraduate qualification. Students of Marketing with Brand Management study three core topics in the Autumn Semester before deciding on their final course of study. In the Spring Semester MSc Marketing with Brand Management students have to apply this knowledge through a project undertaken for an external company and through an appreciation of Contemporary Issues in Marketing. To specialise in Brand Management students must also complete the modules on Brand Marketing and Digital marketing and Advertising and undertake an individual dissertation or group research project in the field of Branding.

Delivery and assessment

The taught modules of the MSc course are delivered using a variety of methods, for example, lectures, tutorials, case studies, role playing, computer simulations, fieldwork exercises, site visits, guest speakers and company projects. Much of the assessment is continuous and may include research reports, essays, briefings, management reports, case analyses, debates, literature reviews, marketing communication plans, poster sessions and presentations. Assessed work is often conducted in groups, as developing teamwork and communication skills are seen as important.

The MSc in Marketing Management and Digital aims to deliver a specialized training in marketing techniques and methodologies of marketing focused on the Asian market – knowledge of marketing survey and strategic analysis tools, mastering of the various aspects of operational marketing, capacity to implement, plan and budget the various marketing actions required in a company. Alternatively, if you are interested in market research, you can also choose to complete a research paper based on an independent research project on a digital marketing or marketing issue you have identified. This work is often carried out by specialist agencies, and involves both strategic thinking and the development of creative solutions. The 12 month masters degree programme begins at the end of September. Initially you will spend time developing your understanding of core principles, theory and practice in marketing management, marketing research and marketing strategy and planning. Case studies will explore the particular applications of concepts in an international marketing context. You will also take a compulsory module exploring the principles, theory and practice of international marketing strategy, including approaches to international market selection, entry mode, and planning the marketing mix globally and/or locally. You will also study a compulsory module on Cross-Cultural Communication to help appreciate the challenges and strategies for effective communication when managing in an international context.

Beyond the core modules, the programme offers a wide choice of elective modules. You will be able to specialise in the areas of marketing that you feel will best prepare you for your chosen career path. We offer an exciting elective which explores the challenges of international marketing decisions in practice, using an innovative computer-based simulation in association with a USA-based company.

Learning and teaching

During the year you will undertake a major independent research dissertation, which must be related to an international marketing issue. Academic members of the Marketing Group will suggest topics consistent with their ongoing research, or you can choose a topic that is directly related to your chosen career path.

Assessment

The programme involves a taught and a project component. The taught programme is assessed by a mixture of coursework assignments throughout the year, and by examinations in May and June.

Once these are completed, students then work full time on the Marketing Report. This provides an opportunity to apply the techniques and insights presented in the programme and apply them to a particular problem area.

Programme aims

This programme aims to:

- provide a pre-experience Master’s programme, and develop specialist skills and knowledge in marketing and management, for those wishing to pursue a career in marketing and/or management
- educate individuals as managers and marketing specialists and thus improve the quality of marketing and management as a profession, through a multi-disciplinary approach to understanding markets and consumers
- provide preparation for and/or development of a career in marketing and/or management by developing skills at a professional or equivalent level, or as preparation for research or further study in the area
- add value to first degrees by developing in students an integrated and critically aware understanding of marketing and management within a wide range of organisations, and assist them to take effective roles within such organisations
- develop students’ knowledge and understanding of a variety of organisations, and the external context in which they operate
- develop the ability of individuals to critically apply marketing and management theories in a range of different contexts, through the development of cognitive, critical and intellectual skills, research skills and relevant personal and interpersonal skills
- enhance the development of lifelong learning skills to foster students’ abilities to be able to work with self-direction and originality and to contribute to business and society at large
- bring the scholarly and critical insights of the Social Sciences to bear on the subjects, activities and processes associated with marketing and management within organisations

The MSc in Marketing & Technology aims to transform students into uniquely-trained individuals possessing the knowledge and skills required to be successful marketers in dynamic and technology-driven industries.

Companies such as Netflix, Airbnb, and Tesla have one thing in common: they break with the norms of existing markets and employ unconventional, technology-driven marketing approaches. Traditional marketing education all too often neglects the marketing abilities that these companies possess. 

The MSc in Marketing & Technology departs from the rather passive marketing logic that assumes markets and marketing channels are fixed features of reality. Instead, it shows how managers can proactively shape and create new markets and marketing landscapes.

The goal of this programme is to transform students into uniquely-trained individuals who understand how to leverage emerging technologies, such as 3D printing, Virtual Reality, and the Internet of Things, to design unique customer experiences, disrupt existing markets, and create entirely new ones.

The programme will direct students’ attention to significant and emerging technological trends, and show how they can address important social and environmental problems.

  • six core modules (90 combined credits)
  • two optional modules (30 combined credits)
  • a research dissertation (60 credits)

Research project

You'll undertake an independent piece of research focusing on the intersection of marketing, technology management, and innovation. The research dissertation should be no longer than 10,000 words. You'll be advised by an experienced supervisor.

If you begin your course in September you have the choice to apply for a 1 year paid work placement in a marketing role instead of completing either a dissertation or client project. By gaining this professional experience you will be well prepared for your future career.

You will develop a strong foundation in marketing theory and practice, combined with a specialist perspective on brand management, including brand values and a wide range of related communication channels.

This course will prepare you to work for a branding or marketing agency or for a marketing, branding or communications department within an organisation. With practical case studies and live scenarios, you will apply brand management theory and analyse and critique what makes a successful brand. You will enhance your employment and future career prospects, through developing your knowledge of marketing and brand management theory and how it is applied in practice.

You will study eight compulsory modules and a module which helps develop your professional and academic skills. If you choose not to take a work placement, the course lasts 12 months. Teaching and learning

Much of the teaching on the course takes the form of interactive workshops, but there are also lectures from staff and visiting speakers. Lectures, discussions, role-play exercises and seminars are linked with selected case studies and assessments to strengthen your practical analysis and decision-making skills. You will develop your skills in working as part of a team through structured group assignments and an online group-based marketing simulation.

You will gain practical experience and put your knowledge of marketing approaches and theory into practice during live research projects for an organisation. Teaching staff at the Business School are engaged in academic research and/or come from an industry background with in-depth practical experience of marketing and brand management issues. Visiting speakers from the world of marketing and branding, consultancies and research bodies augment the programme through leading edge discussions and specialist events.

Specialist facilities

All teaching takes place on our newly redeveloped Headington Campus in the Clerici Building (the new home of Oxford Brookes Business School completed in 2017) and the John Henry Brookes Building. The Clerici Building has undergone a huge redevelopment creating a new home for the Business School, including a lecture theatre, teaching rooms, social learning spaces and a café.

Our library provides specialist business resources (both hard copy and via online access) to UK and overseas companies' annual reports, statistics on all aspects of business and management, a wide range of constantly updated key texts, and postgraduate MA, MBA, MSc and PhD theses.

Field trips

We offer an International Business in Practice Study Trip module. The purpose of this study trip is to give postgraduate students a hands-on, intensive experience with the ideas and practices of global business. The programme will include presentations from local management executives and experts. Students will have direct interaction with management executives and practices through site visits to major corporations and agencies.

This study trip is voluntary and all costs associated with the trip will need to be funded by you. It is not linked to university assessments in any way.
