Programme Description

Our Masters in Luxury Brand Marketing is a programme which provides you with the specialist skills, industry knowledge and expertise necessary for a successful career in a niche and innovative industry.

You’ll study a range of topics, providing a breadth of knowledge and understanding of marketing specifically related to luxury brands, with a focus on critical insights into luxury consumer behaviour, luxury branding and marketing communications and examination of legal aspects of branding within a luxury context. We’ll help you develop your intellectual skills together with the contemporary skills and practices needed to excel in the industry.

There is also an opportunity to complete a work placement, volunteering work, desk based consultancy or even study abroad. Students are also given with the opportunity to engage in independent research through the research project.

The programme aims to provide an opportunity for graduates to study luxury marketing within a global context whilst also being aware of the wider responsibilities of businesses including responsible leadership. On graduation you’ll be well positioned to operate as a manager within an increasingly competitive and digitally orientated industry with an international scope.

The University has built upon a wealth of expertise in the luxury sector from our academic and honorary professors who come from and continue to work as leaders in industry. The primary aim is to equip students with a contemporary understanding of luxury brand marketing, in order to meet the needs of the luxury brand industry. We’ve combined our research-led knowledge with practical expertise from the private and public sectors to build a programme that will prepare you with the essential knowledge and skills to become a digital thought leader and to move your career forward.

We focus on the core concepts and principles of digital and brand marketing, data analytics and game design with a global digital environment. You’ll study topics in digital marketing, brand development, digital branding and marketing strategy, along with data analytics and the principles of game design. Additionally you’ll undertake two research focused modules, including your dissertation.

This is a new programme, developed with industry support to meet the requirements for modern marketers. Assessment

The programme involves a taught and a project component. The taught programme is assessed by a mixture of coursework assignments throughout the year, and by examinations in May and June.

Once these are completed, students then work full time on the Marketing Report. This provides an opportunity to apply the techniques and insights presented in the programme and apply them to a particular problem area.

Programme Structure

The MSc degree in Marketing is an intensive full-time programme lasting 12 months. The programme is divided into two 11-week semesters of taught content, and the summer period, where you can choose between a research dissertation and the practice track. The dissertation allows you to focus on a specific aspect of marketing that is interesting to you, using theory and robust research methods to investigate and generate a much deeper understanding of this area of interest. The practice track allows you to undertake a number of tasks, both working in teams with other members of your cohort and working individually. The practice track is designed to allow you to apply learned concepts and theories to practical problems and issues, including a management problem which will be presented to you by an organisation. This track also provides opportunities for gaining practical experience in running team projects.

Both tracks allow you to demonstrate critical insight and reflective thinking about business/management/policy issues. The tracks also help develop your written and presentation skills, and your ability to develop effective arguments. All of these attributes are transferable skills relevant to the workplace and your future career.

Teaching & Learning Methods

You will be exposed to a variety of teaching and learning methods that could include: interactive lectures, case studies, seminar presentations and group project work. As this is a Masters level course, we place a significant emphasis on independent, directed, private study that is often conducted in learning sets or groups.

Assessment

A variety of individual and group assessment methods are used throughout the degree including exams, coursework essays, reports and presentations.

The unit takes a detailed view of developing a digital and social media communications strategy and plan. Learn from digital marketing specialists – each with active practitioner experience in their fields, such as email marketing, search, social media, mobile. International Brand Strategy
This unit introduces you to the role and nature of brand development and management within an international environment. You will be introduced to a range of issues such as: the brand development process; brand architecture and management; global v local brand strategy, international macro-environment, international culture, corporate branding; international brand strategy and the role semiotics and marketing communications play in the brand development process. You will be assessed through a combination of coursework and exam.

Investigating Business Practice (marketing communications live client brief, 15 credits)
This unit involves working with a client on a live brief with other students. This will develop your communication skills, ability to work with others (students and clients), and will require some independent work to meet the requirements of the brief. The brief is normally a marketing communications issue that needs addressing for an organisation.

Research Methods
This unit covers a range of areas. Initially the focus is on developing your study skills, especially the ability to research and critique journal articles. You will be learning about research philosophy, qualitative and quantitative research methods in order to prepare you for your dissertation.

Dissertation
You will complete an outline topic form in order for a supervisor to be allocated. With the help of your supervisor you will submit initially a research proposal, which is marked and worth 15% of your overall grade for the unit. Once this has been approved you will continue to work under the guidance of your supervisor and complete a 12-15,000 word dissertation on a topic of your choice, relating to marketing communications (worth 85% of your overall grade for this unit). This will be submitted in September at the end of your course.

Schedule

One year, full time over three trimesters.

In addition to attending lectures and seminars (around 10-12 hours a week) you will be expected to spend significant time (25 or more hours a week) engaged in preparing for classes and additional self-directed study as well as participating in the support programme.

Assessments

An innovative range of individual and group based assessments are used involving the preparation of essays, marketing plans, case study analyses, portfolios and presentations as well as the dissertation.

Facilities and Special Features

Throughout the course you are taught by experienced academic staff with specialist knowledge of their subject areas. Taught modules are delivered using a combination of lecture and seminar sessions, with a strong emphasis on participation and discussion. To bring concepts and theories to life, extensive use is made of real world case-studies and practical exercises supplemented by extensive on-line learning materials

To integrate these modules and enrich the experience of the student there is a supporting programme of workshop activities and events. Typically these include a Summer School as well as guest speakers, marketing games, study trips and learning skills development sessions throughout the year.

Summer School

In July 2015, students studying on the course benefitted from a week-long Summer School that provided the opportunity to have marketing concepts brought to life through study trips, visiting speakers and participating in a Marketing Challenge based on Northampton’s leather heritage.

The students were able to find out how leather products are produced with a tour of the tannery at the University’s Institute for Creative Leather Technologies. Professor Mike Redwood spoke on the way luxury leather brands market themselves and the particular issues they face in developing markets.
