This is a unique programme developed specifically for the digital entertainment industry in partnership with the University of Bath. As a result of this partnership, the National Centre for Computer Animation at Bournemouth University and the Department of Computer Science at the University of Bath have created the Centre for Digital Entertainment (CDE).
The CDE's mission is to train the next generation of leaders in the computer animation, games and visual effects industries, with investment in tune to the value of £20 million from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and our industry partners to achieve this goal.
If you join this programme, you will leave after four years with either anEngineering or Professional Doctorate, which will depend on whether you have a technical or artistic focus, as well as invaluable high-level industry experience.
The Doctor of Engineering Digital Media (EngD) is the most appropriate route for technical research.
The Doctor of Professional Practice Digital Media (DProf) is a suitable pathway for research more explicitly focused on creative or managerial areas.

In collaboration with other disciplines from the postgraduate media production framework, you will learn how to work with sound more effectively in location and post-production environments. The Bournemouth University Graduate Diploma in Law/Common Professional Examination (GDL/CPE) is a one year (or two year part-time) course, intended primarily for non-law graduates planning to enter the legal profession.
This course is primarily aimed at non-law graduates from UK universities who are planning to enter the legal profession. If you do not have a UK or Irish undergraduate degree but do have relevant academic qualifications or significant vocational experience, you may also be eligible to join the course – contact us for more details.
Although it is fundamentally aimed at entry to the legal profession, it is a highly valued qualification in its own right and supports a wide range of career opportunities. The course is approved by both The Bar Council and the SRA.

The MA Creative Media Arts: Data and Innovation is designed to respond directly to your needs as someone with the ambition to build a career in one of the growth sectors in the UK: the creative and cultural industries. The course delivers a unique combination of media art and design methodologies alongside basic management and business analytics, to help you build a successful career or venture within this dynamic sector. The curriculum has been developed in response to important research findings, demonstrating that growth in the wider economy is being driven by a creative sector founded on a fusion between digital technologies, creative practice and the wider arts and humanities. It's what we call the “fusion hypothesis”. Drawing extensively on this concept we have developed a programme that brings the cultures of art, technology and enterprise into new and generative combinations.
With its emphasis on focused innovation and rapid prototyping the course is unusual in combining a critical media arts perspective with a deep understanding and engagement with the business-led dynamics of the creative industries.
The course is delivered in the context of Bournemouth University’s world renowned Faculty of Media & Communication, known for its contacts at the heart of the media industry. The programme has been developed and lead by leading practitioners from media art contributing business-led research and development insights from the design sector aimed at developing advanced enterprise and creative projects. This new course offers a unique opportunity to study how psychological insights can throw light on politics. What are the roots of political violence? What drives shifts in public opinion? Why do some people become activists, while others never get involved? How does propaganda work? What is the appeal of the political ideologies to which some devote their lives? What makes for effective political leadership? Is the future democratic?
Psychology can make a vital contribution to developing answers to these and many other questions of importance to all those interested in the future of their societies. Political psychology is a well-established branch of psychology, yet there are very few places in the world where a Masters in the subject can be taken. Bournemouth University is now offering such a course, based on the in-depth expertise of the team who will provide it. The course leader is Professor Barry Richards, who has over thirty years’ experience of research and writing in this field, from his edited collection ‘Capitalism and Infancy’ in 1984 to his forthcoming book ‘What is Holding Us Together?’. He has been a leading figure in the application of psychoanalytic theory to the understanding of politics.
The course team also includes Professor Candida Yates, author and editor of books on popular culture, emotion and politics, and Associate Professor Darren Lilleker, a widely-published international leader in the study of political communication. These and other teaching staff bring a broad range of perspectives to the course, and enable it both to focus on the psychological dimensions of politics and also to see psychological factors in their broader societal contexts. Our psychologies need specific study, but are part of our societies and cultures.

Bournemouth University has one of the largest face-processing laboratories in the UK, and our academic staff have expertise in neuropsychological disorders of face-processing and forensic applications of face-processing research. This expertise is central to the delivery of the course, where you will learn about the detection, management and potential remediation of face-processing disorders, including those with acquired, progressive, developmental or neuropsychiatric origins.
Through the study of contemporary issues in face-processing research, the fascinating programme of study is especially relevant if you hope to become a researcher in this area and/or are seeking further professional development by gaining a unique and relevant qualification in an increasingly difficult job market.
You will also gain key technological skills that are required for face-processing research. There will be training in the manipulation of facial stimuli, instruction in programming, and consideration of methodological issues and experimental design. Using our state-of-the-art research equipment, including eye-tracking, tDCS, EEG and when possible MRI, you will get plenty of practical, hands-on experience. These skills will be fundamental for the research project, in which you will carry out an experimental investigation addressing a novel research question in the field.

The MRes programme allows you to undertake a research project at Master's level which would be assessed via submission of a thesis and a viva voce.
You can set out to find the answer to a particular research question and will have the chance to delve more deeply into a subject area that you are passionate about.
Your research project will be developed in collaboration with our academic University staff who will provide you with specialist knowledge and supervisory input, while accessing BU's technical facilties and information resources.
You will also be part of BU's wider postgraduate community and have access to the suite of research, professional and personal training offered through the Doctoral College and your Academic faculty.
We strongly encourage collaboration across specialisms, and an MRes provides an opportunity to work with supervisors from various backgrounds to deliver truly impactful research.
The minimum completion time for the full-time course is 12 months with flexibility to take up to 18 months. If you would prefer to complete the course part-time, the minimum completion time is 24 months with flexibility to take up to 36 months to complete.
This is a truly international course, attracting students from all over the world with a diverse range of cultures and identities. It will provide you with a strong theoretical and technical underpinning for the principal areas of study thanks to lecture series on filmmaking techniques, green screen, MOCAP, computer graphic principles, the fusion of art and technology, personal research, and applied digital effects theory and practice.
We accept students from a broad range of art-based subject areas including fine art, photography, architecture, filmmaking, fashion design, and graphic design. We will also consider applications from non-art based subjects such as computer sciences or engineering, as long as good art skills can be demonstrated. Knowledge of digital effects and computer graphics are not a pre-requisite for entry, as everything is rapidly taught from basics. A strong set of traditional art and photography skills are however highly beneficial, and demonstration of all art-based skills should be done at application stage in the form of a digital portfolio.
MA Digital Effects and the National Centre for Computer Animation is the UK’s only officially recognised Houdini Certified School. This incredible software is now at the forefront of the VFX Industry, and knowledge of it is a must for anyone wanting to progress their careers in this field.
Digital Effects is one of three Master's degree pathways created by the National Centre for Computer Animation NCCA. All pathways share a great deal of core teaching, but also have specific pathway teaching. If your primary area of interest is mostly illustration or figurative character-based, then our 3D Computer Animation Programme may be a better choice for you. If your application portfolio is mostly technical or programming-based work without much in the way of original artwork, then our Computer Animation & Visual Effects Programme may be the better choice. Our assessment panels will automatically pass applications deemed better suited to another pathway onto them, so it is a good idea to familiarise yourself with all our Master's pathways to help ensure Digital Effects is the right programme for you.

The postgraduate diploma course in Adult Nursing is open to applicants with a first-degree or a higher degree; the programme makes use of Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) provision for prior learning to allow students to complete the academic award and achieve professional registration as a nurse via a two-year course. Successful applicants will undertake some of their studies alongside undergraduate students completing the BSc (Hons) in Adult Nursing, but will also complete dedicated study at Master's level to achieve a postgraduate qualification.
The NMC’s Standards for Pre-registration Nursing Education (2010) require programmes leading to registration to be delivered over 4600 hours, with 50% of this theory and 50% practice; NMC do however permit prior learning to be recognised where this can be mapped against the programme outcomes and requirements. Students applying for this programme will therefore need to demonstrate that they have the relevant experience and learning prior to entering the course.
Throughout the course you will develop your knowledge and understanding of the art and science of adult nursing. Communication and team working are key in health and social care and you will develop a range of interpersonal skills that enable you to work effectively with a wide diversity of clients and within complex settings.
The health economy is rapidly changing and future nurses are likely to be located in a broader range of workplaces. Your placement opportunities will therefore be in a diverse range of settings which include the growing independent sector as well as care within the community, preparing you to function effectively and meet the health care needs of an increasing ageing population.
Please note that this course is not recruiting for September 2017. We will be recruiting a funded intake to this course in February 2018. This course will prepare you for registration as a midwife with the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) and to gain a professional qualification. You can choose your study base to be in Bournemouth or Portsmouth, the Bournemouth course starts in September and Portsmouth in February each year.
Throughout the course you'll become a proficient and reflective practitioner of midwifery who is able to base their practice on research, holistic care and commitment to lifelong learning. Theory and practice are integrated throughout, and experience is gained in both community and hospital settings, working in partnership with mothers and midwives.
When on placement you will experience the full 24-hour shift pattern to include 12-13 hour shifts, weekends and night shifts. Our graduates enjoy a range of career opportunities within the NHS and the national private sector, and this qualification is accepted by many countries throughout the world.
This is a pre-registration midwifery course that has been adapted for those students who already have a degree. We also offer a BSc (Hons) in Midwifery if you don't have a degree. Students on this PG Dip course will work alongside the BSc (Hons) Midwifery students; however some units will be grouped with other PG Dip students from other nursing pathways, and your academic tutor will focus on your individual development at Master's level.
Engineering project management is a dynamic profession and you’ll need to be up to date with new developments in the philosophies, methods and tools for planning and executing projects. If you have ambitions of being a Chartered Engineer (CEng) then this course will provide you with the ideal start. It is accredited by the Institution of Engineering Designers (IED) on behalf of the Engineering Council for the purposes of fully meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer. Graduates holding professional status and accredited degrees are highly valued by employers in the UK and internationally.
This course has been designed to suit those in work as well as full-time students, with units taught intensively (normally over 4.5 days) to enable effective, practical learning and minimise time away from the workplace. Dates for the units in the current academic year are given below as an example. Assessment normally takes place five to six weeks after the delivery of the unit.
During the course you'll apply mathematical and computer-based models for solving problems in engineering design. The nature of this course is business driven and you will apply your knowledge to specific design problems. The research undertaken as part of the Individual Master's Project will give you an opportunity to explore your particular area of interest in greater depth.
If you choose to take this degree on a part-time basis, it will take two years to reach Master's level and you will then have a further six-month project to undertake.

On the course you'll cover a range of topics from materials technologies to sustainability issues. You'll investigate, select and learn to use the computer aided design (CAD) and analysis simulation tools that are appropriate to the requirements in your field of work.
