Interdisciplinary Curriculum

Political science modules focus on contemporary political issues and governance in Europe, especially, as they pertain to the wider spectrum of integration theories, and on the institutional and policy development of the European Union since the ratification of the Treaties of Rome.
Economic modules cover the economic, monetary and financial aspects of the EU, and analyse the Union's internal market against the backdrop of economic globalisation and the international trade regime.
Legal modules deal with the constitutional principles of the European Union, the sources and application of EU law, the regulation of industry sectors such as electronic communications, energy and logistics as well as the legal structure of the internal market and the jurisdiction of the Court of Justice of the EU and other EU institutions.
The focus on governance in the EU deals with the interaction between political, economic, and legal factors and the dialectical structure of actors and factors in creating the institutional arrangements and policy fields in today's EU. Regulatory issues cover regulation policy and corresponding legal prerequisites in various fields, such as electronic communications, logistics, water, and energy.

During the two semesters from October to June, students attend six basic modules of 30 hours each and five specialised modules, each consisting of three topics and comprising 36 hours each. Basic modules provide students with a general knowledge and an overview of the subject. Specialised modules provide detailed knowledge on issues of special importance. The programme comprises four field trips to European and German institutions, organisations and companies, a career development programme as well as business talks, in particular, with practitioners from the private sector and alumni.
From June to August, students write their Master's thesis.

This programme is a co-operation between St Andrews and the University of Bonn. Students complete a two-year degree course spending their first year in Germany and the second year in Scotland. Upon successful completion students are awarded a joint degree comprising a Scottish MLitt and a German MA.

Why this programme?

This exciting international degree offers a unique opportunity to gain a joint qualification from two of the leading universities in the UK and Germany. With your first year spent in Bonn, and your second year in St Andrews, you will become truly bilingual and truly intercultural, at home in two countries – a true comparatist, not just in theory! You will be steeped in two academic systems at an advanced level, experience the best of these two historic universities, and gain a uniquely comparative perspective on comparative and German literature. This joint degree qualification, recognized in both Britain and Germany, makes our students highly attractive for PhD programmes and graduate employment in both countries.

You will be taught by a group of internationally renowned experts in all major areas of German and comparative studies from the Middle Ages to the twenty-first century. This first-class training scheme will deepen your knowledge of the latest thinking in literary and comparative studies and give you the research, communication and writing skills needed to embark on a PhD or top-level graduate jobs. Intercultural perspectives are at the heart of state-of-the-art research in modern languages and comparative literature, and at the heart of this unique degree both in theory and practice.

Postgraduate community

Whilst the six departments in the School of Modern Languages retain their individuality, the School as a whole is very well integrated, with collaborative teaching within and across departments, and this is reflected in the postgraduate community as well. Students on different MLitt programmes will all take some core modules together, and all postgraduates, MLitt, Mundus, and PhD students are encouraged to attend the large number of research seminars and workshops which take place in the School, as well as organising their own specific events. The size of the School and the number of postgraduates provides a friendly informal setting conducive to interdisciplinarity and discussion of ideas and issues in a thought-provoking but relaxed and supportive environment.

Class sizes

Class sizes vary as some modules are common to a number of programmes and so have more students in them, whilst others may be more specialised and therefore smaller.

Careers

Many of our postgraduates go on to careers in the academic field, as university teachers, researchers or administrators. Others find employment in other areas, for example as cultural advisors, translators, or in the public or civil service. Recent graduates have secured posts such as university teachers in the UK and Germany, research assistants, a postgraduate recruitment officer, at GCHQ, a professional translator, an adviser to the CBI, and a subtitler for television.

Curriculum

The Master in International Relations program is spread over four integrated levels aimed at fostering a multidimensional education, which includes research skills, analytical tools and professional development.

1st level - Scientific Training & Management Skills
The course offers an important opportunity to meet internation- al faculty and deepen the theoretical analysis of the economic, political, historical, legal and institutional issues relevant to the global system. Due to the multidisciplinary character of this area, students have the opportunity to study and evaluate specific problems from different, yet connected, perspectives.

2nd level - Advanced Training on Regional Areas
The Master in International Relations includes an advanced training program on the most relevant regional areas that governments, international organizations, non-governmental organizations and multinational private companies are facing. Professionals and experts from specific fields are involved in planning, organizing, and holding introductory courses, semi- nars and case studies on Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and Middle East.

3rd level - Project Work
Students join in the elaboration of a project work where the multidimensional analysis of a problem leads to the identifica- tion of its fundamental nodes.

4th level - Internship
The research activity is completed with an internship that gives students the invaluable opportunity to strengthen competences acquired during the Master in International Relations. It is a key compulsory component of the Master program and usually lasts three months.

The Master trains professionals to contribute to development cooperation with creativity, personality and competence by interpreting local and international events, interacting with stakeholders, identifying and managing environmentally and local culture-friendly interventions. This Master provides students with multidisciplinary training and specialized technical and managerial competences.
