PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

This programme is attuned to the current needs of investment and finance professionals: it combines a rigorous theoretical approach to investment management with the practical tools and opportunities to solve real-life investment problems.

You will learn the analytical, decision-making, problem-solving, risk mitigation and technical financial skills needed to succeed in the field. On graduation, you will have mastered each stage of the investment management process and be able to make informed decisions within that context.

Our compulsory modules deliver a fundamental understanding of investment management concepts, while optional modules allow you to tailor your learning based on your interests or career path. We also incorporate use of our Bloomberg Lab into the programme and you should obtain a Bloomberg Market Competency certificate during their studies.

As the focus of the programme is to prepare you for a career in investment the use of Bloomberg is incorporated into the programme. There is also an opportunity to undertake a preparation course for CFA Level 1 exams once Semester 2 teaching has finished.

EDUCATIONAL AIMS OF THE PROGRAMME

The need for an Investment Management programme arises from the continuing global demand for professionals working in the fields of investment management, investment banking, pension funds, insurance companies and alternative investment partnerships (such as hedge funds, private equity and sovereign wealth funds).

The aim of the programme is to provide students with the array of skills required to operate successfully in an investment management or investment analysis role within the finance industry or to pursue further academic study within the subject area.

The programme will provide a high quality education that is current, intellectually rigorous and attuned to the needs of investment and finance professionals. It provides the theoretical underpinning and the practical skills that such professionals need in order to cope with an increasingly complex global financial environment.

It also provides a valuable foundation for those considering continuing their academic studies in the field of applied finance, accounting and banking to PhD level. The compulsory modules provide a rigorous grounding in theory plus the quantitative techniques necessary to undertake empirical investigations and form balanced evaluations of practice. Topics include: information-based asset pricing – a new paradigm for financial risk management; modelling frameworks for cash flows and market information; applications to credit risk modelling, defaultable discount bond dynamics, the pricing and hedging of credit-risky derivatives such as credit default swaps (CDS), asset dependencies and correlation modelling, and the origin of stochastic volatility.

Financial modelling and risk management involve not only the valuation and hedging of various assets and their positions, but also the problem of asset allocation. The traditional approach of risk-neutral valuation treats the problem of valuation and hedging, but is limited when it comes to understanding asset returns and the behaviour of asset prices in the real-world 'physical' probability measure. The pricing kernel approach, however, treats these different aspects of financial modelling in a unified and coherent manner. This module introduces in detail the techniques of pricing kernel methodologies, and its applications to interest-rete modelling, foreign exchange market, and inflation-linked products. Another application concerns the modelling of financial markets where prices admit jumps. In this case, the relation between risk, risk aversion, and return is obscured in traditional approaches, but is made clear in the pricing kernel method. The module also covers the introduction to the theory of Lévy processes for jumps and its applications to dynamic asset pricing in the modern setting.

Research project

Towards the end of the Spring Term, students will choose a topic to work on, which will lead to the preparation of an MSc dissertation. This can be thought of as a mini research project. The project supervisor will usually be a member of the financial mathematics group. In some cases the project may be overseen by an external supervisor based at a financial institution or another academic institution.

The MSc Computational Trading programme allows students to bridge the gap between financial theory and work experience.

Our partnership with City-based Amplify Trading will enable you to gain hands-on experience of stock market analysis on a live trading platform. Amplify provides financial software used within the development programmes of leading investment banks including Bank of America, HSBC, Citigroup, Credit Suisse and Deutsche Bank. By the end of the programme you will be capable of trading effectively in equity, bond, commodity and foreign exchange markets and you will be ready to take up a role within leading institutions in the financial and commodity trading sector.

We focus on real time approaches to trading, including features of specific financial tools and the interaction of macroeconomic, financial, technical and behavioural drivers in financial markets. Our highly interactive teaching techniques include the use of Eviews Econometrics software, R programming language and specialised trading platform. You will engage with theoretical, applied and practical (hands on) learning.

We benefit from our close proximity to one of the world's largest financial centres, Canary Wharf, which lies just across the river. Induction Weeks The MSc in Investment Management course starts with two compulsory induction weeks, including:

To satisfy the requirements of the degree course students must complete:

VIBOT is a two-year International Masters of Excellence in Vision and Robotics sponsored by the European Union under the Erasmus Mundus framework. Built as collaboration between three leading universities in Europe (Heriot-Watt University in Scotland, the Universitat de Girona in Spain and the Université de Bourgogne in France), it is a truly international degree where students not only learn cutting edge science and engineering but are also exposed to different cultures. Over 50 countries have been represented on the Vibot programs since its inception in 2006.

This is a highly competitive programme aiming at attracting the best European and Overseas students to study robotics and computer vision. A number of very attractive grants (up to €42000) covering the University fees and a stipend for living and travel expenses are offered to the best students in the limit of the available grants (typically 16/year). On average, one in ten student applying is selected for a grant.

In recent years, the amount of digital image information to be stored, processed and distributed has grown dramatically. The generalisation of the use of digital images, in video surveillance, biomedical and e-health systems, and remote sensing, creates new, pressing challenges, and automated management tools are key to enable the organisation, mining and processing of these important knowledge resources. The key subject areas taught are computer vision, pattern recognition and robotics. Research in these areas is very dynamic and relevant to a wide range of sectors, such as the autonomotive industry, autonomous systems, medical imaging and e-health. The course is over two years, students spend the first semester in France, the second in Spain and the third in Scotland. The fourth semester is reserved for Masters thesis.

All of our graduates find work in industry or research very quickly and are sought after by research laboratories and leading blue chip companies alike. More and more of our graduates choose an industrial career.

Started in 2006, the VIBOT program has become the leading computer vision and robotics program in Europe. A majority of the VIBOT students have graduated with distinction and around 50% of them continue on to PhD studies.

Teaching and learning

Much of the teaching takes place in interactive workshops. In addition, lectures, discussions, role-play exercises and seminars are linked with selected case studies and assessments to strengthen your practical analysis and decision-making skills. You will develop your teamworking skills through structured group assignments.

Teaching staff from the Business School have in-depth knowledge of accounting practices and issues through practical experience or academic research. Visiting speakers from business and research bodies provide further input.

This is an intensive programme and you will have two taught classes each week for each module.
Approach to assessment
Assessment will include a range of activities including examinations, case studies, reports, presentations and group projects.

Specialist facilities

Our Business School Postgraduate Centre at Wheatley Campus has a state-of-the-art lecture theatre, well equipped seminar rooms and a postgraduate lounge and private study area.

The Wheatley Campus library provides specialist business resources including 1,000 sets of UK and overseas companies' annual reports, statistics on all aspects of business and management, postgraduate theses in business and management and business examination papers.

Field trips

We also offer an elective, non-credit module - International Business in Practice - Study Trip. The purpose of this optional Study Trip Module is to give postgraduate students a hands-on, intensive experience with the ideas and practices of global business. The programme will include presentations from local management executives and experts. Students will have direct interaction with management executives and practices through site visits to major corporations and agencies.

In the past students travelled to Boston, USA. This self-funded trip included visits to Harvard University, MIT, Reebok, Ocean Spray, Federal Reserve Bank, and State Street.

Classes are timetabled throughout the week and not every week will be the same.

Course detail

The aim of the NGO Management course is to enable students to develop key management competencies and analytical capabilities needed by those in leadership and management positions in international NGOs.

The course has been developed in partnership with leading INGOs and BOND (the UK-NGO network). It is one of the five postgraduate courses offered by Cass’s Business School’s Centre for Charity Effectiveness. This is one of the only centres of excellence in Europe offering a full range of latest research, education, training and consultancy geared to the needs of voluntary sector managers and leaders.

Format

The course is taught on a part-time basis and is taught over a period of twelve months. The Postgraduate Diploma consists of four core modules that all students take and are common to all the Centre’s postgraduate courses. These core modules provide the essential underpinning of management skills for the specialist courses. Upon successful completion of the diploma you can continue to the MSc Programme.

The MSc requires completion of the Research Methods for Managers module. This is followed by either: a further six months of personal, supervised research and the presentation of a 15,000-word research-based dissertation. Or alternatively, you can opt to take a taught Masters which allows you to choose specialist modules from one of the other Charities programmes.

The programme will enable you to develop knowledge and skills in relation to the legal rules regulating the financial and capital markets in the UK, as well as at a global level. It will provide you with the opportunity to learn about the international regulatory frameworks in which banks and other financial institutions operate, as well as commercial financial issues such as the legal framework for international syndicated loans, bond issues, secured credit and insolvency.

You’ll investigate and apply the complex rules of banking and finance law to novel problems and real-world and hypothetical scenarios.
